How Did President Obama End Up At Kalamazoo Central’s Graduation?

Michigan high school won the Race to the Top challenge and a commencement speech from Obama. By Gil Kaufman President Barack Obama delivers the commencement speech for Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Back in February, President Obama put out a challenge to graduating seniors all over the country: Prove that you did the best job meeting his Race to the Top challenge and he would deliver the commencement address at your high school. “Public schools that encourage systemic reform and embrace effective approaches to teaching and learning help prepare America’s students to graduate ready for college and a career and enable them to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world,” the president said in a video message. “This is your opportunity to show me why your school exemplifies the best that our education system has to offer.” Education Secretary Arne Duncan added that the Race to the Top challenge was a chance for the nation’s schools to share their accomplishments and aspirations and for teachers, students and principals to show how they are putting education first. The key to the challenge was a four-question essay in which each school was asked to demonstrate how they were helping prepare students to meet the president’s goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. More than 1,000 schools submitted applications for the honor, with the White House Domestic Policy Council and Department of Education narrowing the list of finalists down to six high schools. Then the hard work really began, as each school encouraged supporters to weigh in to help them get into the winner’s circle. According to the White House, between April 26 and 29, over 170,000 short videos and essays were received from the six finalist schools, with President Obama selecting the national winner from the three high schools with the highest average ratings. The finalists included Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas; Clark Montessori in Cincinnati; Denver School of Science and Technology in Denver; Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale, California; Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan; and MAST Academy in Miami. Kalamazoo Central’s “We Are the Giants” video ultimately came out on top. Backed by a community looking to rise above its economic challenges, the diverse student body of Kalamazoo Central showed that the Giants take preparing for college and a career seriously. Nearly 94 percent of Central’s seniors are headed to college, and for those efforts, they got to meet the president himself, first as a group when the seniors joined him in an intimate gathering before their commencement ceremony on Monday. “It was the most amazing thing ever that could ever happen to anybody,” one particularly enthusiastic student gushed, while another classmate chimed in, “That moment right there changed my life, just meeting the president.” And again on the graduation stage, when each student shook President Obama’s hand after he delivered his first-ever high school commencement address , as promised. In the speech, he lauded Kalamazoo Central’s students for their hard work, dedication and ingenuity and called the school a model for success in the 21st century. “It gives me great confidence to know that we’ve got such incredible young leaders that are going to be remaking the world in so many ways,” Obama said. “I’m here tonight because I think America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes a successful school in this new century.” Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Howard Stern Discusses Small Business Marketing

Howard Stern NEW YORK, NY – On May 1, 2010 in the New York News Today website, there is a good article by Small Business Marketing Coach, J D Moore entitled, 5 Things Howard Stern Can Teach You About Small Business Marketing . Good call by Mr. Moore. Who would expect such business acumen from a radio “shock jock” and who would even bother to pay attention? It just “shows to go ya” that people will surprise you so it pays to pay attention. Howard Stern’s advice is right on the money. He clearly demonstrates that he has a good sense of business and the branding that is necessary for success. I’m not a fan of Howard Stern. I don’t particularly like his brand of entertainment. But I have to hand it to him because he’s good at what he does. Here is a summary of the points in the article: 1. Tightly Targeted Market Know your audience and consistently give them what they want. This is what Howard Stern does. He knows his audience. He is unapologetic. He doesn’t water down what he does or try to make it more palatable for a bigger audience. Keep a tight focus on what you have to offer. This makes it more likely that your brand will be known and recognized. By targeting his market very tightly he has built an audience of millions of very dedicated fans. He knows that some people won’t like him, and he’s fine with that. Small business marketing should be tightly focused. It is true that many people will be disqualified from becoming your customers, but if there are enough of them, then you’ll stand a better chance of finding them and keeping them. 2. Consistent Brand Make sure your message is always the same. Don’t waffle about. Keep it consistent. Brand recognition depends on a consistent message or consistent quality. When you tune in to Howard Stern you’ll always know what you’re going to get. People who like him will always come back for more because his message is always the same. They know what to expect from Howard Stern and they can rely on it. He always delivers. Customers are usually loyal because they go to a lot of trouble to find what they want and they like to keep it that way. Don’t take advantage of customer loyalty or you’ll lose them. It takes a lot of effort and expense to get new customers and a lot less to keep them as long as you keep delivering what they want. One bad buying experience is enough for you to lose them. Customers become accustomed to consistent quality and they expect it. 3. Authentic Branding Be sincere. Be honest. Don’t try to pull the wool over the customer’s eyes. Customers are not stupid. They know when they’re being lied to. With Howard Stern you get the sense that he is 100% honest and that he is putting his real self forward. When he takes the microphone, his story appears to be authentic. He is not afraid to present himself in an unflattering light. Today there is a movement in marketing to present a truly authentic message. People have learned not to trust advertising, so today’s consumers are a lot more savvy than those of the past. BS just doen’t sell, so marketers need to find more honest and sincere ways to connect to their audience. Self-deprecating marketing is not always recommended, but it has worked in the past. Avis built their marketing reputation around the slogan, “We try harder” because they we’re number 2 behind Hertz Rent-A-Car. 4. Multiple Channel Presence We have a future article planned around this one point. Find and use multiple channels of distribution for your product or service. Howard Stern is known primarily for his radio show, but he had a successful running TV show and has also made successful forays into books, movies, and the Internet. Good marketing should reach it’s target via multiple channels. Every small business should have a website, an email list and do direct mail. You should create customer referral programs and get customers to become your salespeople. If you have a brick-and-mortar location, you should have a nice, attractive space, have good signage and advertise locally. You can also sponsor events and speak in front of groups. As a small business owner, you need to constantly remind people who you are and what you have to offer. 5. Embrace Technology This is one point where a small business could easily fall behind – especially for those who are not tech savvy or slow to adapt to new technology. Howard Stern recently moved from free commercial radio to paid Sirius satellite radio. He also does On-Demand cable broadcasting. These moves demonstrate that he’s on the cutting edge of technology. Radio will be changed forever because the audience he will bring with him will bring economic pressures to bear upon it. Technology can give a small business the leverage it can use to compete with larger companies who have more resources. Technology resources are cheap but far-reaching. A small business owner can use web sites, podcasts, blogs, email lists, message boards and forums and social networking to reach millions of people. The communications tools available to small business are mind boggling. If you are not comfortable with technology, then you should step outside your comfort zone and get some education. Attend classes and seminars and read publications to stay up to date. Make some new friends … get with it. DAVID LEE ROTH’S EGO GOT HIM JOB

David Lee Roth’s ego landed him in Howard Stern’s seat on CBS Radio morning show in 2006: By David Hinckley DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER CBS Radio fantasized about getting Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David or Jon Stewart to replace Howard Stern when he left his ultra-successful terrestrial morning radio show at the end of 2005, says the then-CBS executive in charge of the search. CBS ultimately settled for David Lee Roth, said former CBS exec Rob Barnett, because he was the only viable candidate with an ego large enough to think he could step into Stern’s shoes. “That couldn’t have been your first choice,” Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers said. “Seventy-eighth choice,” said Barnett, who eventually rose to the position of CBS Radio president before he was downsized out of a job.Barnett guested on Stern’s Sirius XM show Tuesday morning. He and Stern both said the drama led to many dead ends and some lingering hard feelings. First of all, said Barnett, the idea of replacing Stern, who was heard in New York on WXRK (92.3 FM) and had one of the most popular syndicated shows in the country, was a “ridiculous impossibility.” “The only name that advertisers would hear and think ‘maybe we’ll put one twentieth of Howard’s dollars on that’…was Jon Stewart.” So he approached then-CBS Radio President Joel Hollander, “and I said, Jon’s not going to host a radio show. But Jon is a producer and a person who develops new talent. Jon developed Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, not radio guys. Stewart is a big name and I wanted him to meet Joel.” Then “two minutes into the meeting,” said Barnett, Hollander asked Stewart to host, and “Jon quickly wrapped up the meeting.” Hollander also contacted Seinfeld, Chris Rock and others, said Barnett, even though “all the money in the world couldn’t get them to do five hours of live radio. They’re already rich.” Hollander also turned down the idea of Opie and Anthony, said Barnett. So it came down to Roth, he said, who was eager to take the job and did a tryout in Boston that Barnett called “amazing.” But when Roth got to Stern’s seat in early 2006, it all went south. He lingered a few months, long enough to go down as one of the major disasters in radio history. “The meltdown came day one or day two,” said Barnett, “when he got in the chair … and wouldn’t listen to anyone that was there to do only one thing….to help him.” Opie and Anthony took over a few months later and eventually were also cashiered when the ratings never approached Stern territory. Many of Stern’s old stations eventually changed formats. K-Rock, which played rock during non-Stern hours, is now a top-40. All this has been resurrected lately as Stern approaches the end of his five-year deal with Sirius XM, in December, and speculation mounts about what he will do next. He has denied he has any plans to return to “free” radio, where he said again on Tuesday that censorship restrictions drove him nuts. He also said he still has “a tremendous amount of animosity” toward Hollander and current CBS CEO Les Moonves. “Joel Hollander, I have no love for the guy,” Stern said. “And Les Moonves treated me horribly. They wished me well. Then a couple of months later they sued me.“ Stern also said that while he liked Roth and wished him well, he knew he would fail when he didn’t seem to grasp the idea that talking to a radio audience is different than talking to the crowd at a rock concert. “He looked at me with a blank stare,” said Stern, “like he wasn’t concerned.” Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/2010/04/21/2010-04-21_david_lee_roths_ego_landed_him_in_howard_sterns_seat_on_cbs_radio_morning_show_i.html#ixzz0m37qAvps

It is reported in CNN on Tuesday which is citing a group that monitors Islamist websites that Al Qaeda’s No. 3 leader has been killed in a missile strike in Pakistan-Afghanistan border area. Al Qaeda announced the death of Mustafa Abu Yazid without detailing the circumstances of Yazid’s death, as per message posted on such websites on Monday. But it did say his wife, three of his daughters, a granddaughter and others were killed as per Maryland-based SITE Intelligence Group. According to that SITE, Yazid, an Egyptian national, is believed to be a financial manager for al Qaeda, as well as a co-founder of the terrorist group.
