Michael Sam Reality Show on Hold, Rams Unhappy About Series

The Michael Sam reality show has been indefinitely placed on hold. The former Missouri defensive end and SEC Defensive Player of the Year became the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL this month. A few days ago, he announced that he had signed on for a series with OWN that would chronicle his journey to making the team. It was a move met with criticism by those who cited Sam himself as saying he wanted to be known as just a football player, not a gay football player – and how many seventh round draft picks star in reality shows? Now, following an admission by the St. Louis Rams that they were unaware of Sam’s deal with OWN prior to choosing him and were afraid he could become a “distraction,” Sam has pulled out of the series. “After today’s meeting with the Rams, we collectively feel it is best to postpone the project,” Sam’s agent said in a statement. “This will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football, and will ensure no distractions to his teammates. “Everybody involved remains committed to this project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.” Michael Sam Drafted by St. Louis Rams

Oscar Mayer Invents Bacon-Scented Alarm Clock, World Rejoices

The brilliant people at Oscar Mayer have out-brillianted themselves. They figured the one sure way to get people out of bed in the morning is with the sound – and smell – of bacon cooking. Because if there is one thing Americans love more than sleep, it’s bacon. They’ve invented a small device that plugs into the headphone jack of your iPhone and interacts with their free bacon-sound alarm clock app. When your alarm goes off, you’ll not only hear bacon sizzling, you’ll also smell it. With your nose! For real! Unfortunately for us, you cannot buy this amazing device. You have to go to their new Wake Up And Smell The Bacon website between now and April 4, 2014 and sign up for a chance to receive one. (To research this post I obviously had to apply. I’m sad to report I didn’t win one… yet. Although I swear I can already smell bacon cooking after writing the word “bacon” so many times.) On second thought, this whole idea seems sort of cruel. Waking up to the irresistible smell of bacon only to discover…no bacon?? Torture. The Oscar Mayer Institute for the Advancement of Bacon also released a video that you really just have to see. There are no words. Well maybe one word…. Wake Up And Smell The Bacon BACON!

Ashley Wagner: The New McKayla Maroney?

Ashley Wagner’s figure skating short program was hot but the judges scores left her cold. The 22-year-old American skater did a little shimmy with joy as she took her bows on the ice, confident her performance was excellent. But when she saw her score – a 63.10 – she couldn’t hide her disappointment. Like, at all. Wagner’s shocked face quickly became the Sochi Olympics version of McKayla Maroney’s “not impressed” face from the 2012 Summer Olympics. “Bullsh*t”, she mouthed to her teammates, although she later amended her statement to “To score that low was very disappointing to me,” when she spoke to reporters. The score put Wagner in fourth place but it was good enough to advance the U.S. to the next round, where they ended up with a bronze medal in team skating. I think she deserves a gold medal in awesome faces, in any case. Remember when McMayla Maroney wasn’t impressed either at the 2012 Summer Olympics? Flappy Bird Taken Down From App Stores; Developer "Cannot Take This Anymore"

Flappy Bird, the addictive mobile game that flew to the top of the iPhone and Android app downloads charts in recent months, has now flown the coop. A tweet from the creator suggested that its huge success had become a burden for him personally, despite the insane sums of money he banked. “I am sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users, 22 hours from now, I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down,” developer Dong Nguyen wrote Saturday. “I cannot take this anymore.” What is the “this” he’s referring to? Flappy Bird Pulled Nguyen, a Vietnamese developer with a studio called DotGears, did not reply to interviews request, but has previously said that the game “ruined” his “simple life.” “It is not anything related to legal issues,” he said. “I just cannot keep it anymore.” The notoriety for creating the no-frills game, in which players steer a tiny bird through an obstacle course of metal pipes, is not something he ever sought. Although new players can no longer download “Flappy Bird,” the popular game remains playable for those who had already added it to their devices. As of last week, “Flappy Bird” had an average four-star rating from more than 543,000 reviews in the Apple App Store and 228,000 on Android. It reportedly earns $50,000 a DAY in mobile ad sales alone. As the flap over the game being taken down continues, hundreds of phones with “Flappy Bird” installed have appeared on eBay at prices up to $15,000.

Clapback: Fans Go In On Jada Pinkett Smith For Anti-Christian Statement On Facebook

Jada, you know you don’t play with God like that! Fans Slam Jada Pinkett Smith For Anti-Christian Statement This is the same lady who defended Jaden saying kids needed to drop out of school. Doesn’t Jada know people will cut you down to the white meat over their God? According to Rolling Out: Jada Pinkett Smith recently caused a stir on Facebook after she posted an “inspirational” status update that to some seemed to be anti-Christianity. “We are born with our souls, but it is through our experiences in life that we are given the opportunity to discover the paths needed to develop the self,” wrote Smith. “In order to do this we must not belong to the obedient…we must belong to our truth.” And while over 42,000 people liked the comment, several fans spoke out against her words and ordered her to reconnect with God and study the bible. “This is not the truth, so many lost souls. We must be obedient to God and follow his will for our lives!” wrote one fan. “We are to be obedient to God,” added another. Jada and her family have long been rumored to be a part of the Church of Scientology. In 2008, the Smiths funded a school that taught children under the principles of “Study Technology,” a concept created by the Church of Scientology’s founder Ron L. Hubbard. Both Willow and Jaden Smith attended the academy before it closed its door amid controversy in June. Hit the flip to see the fans come for Jada.

Winamp Shut Down After 16 Years; Tech Community Mourns MP3 Player of Yore

It’s the end of an era. The pioneering desktop MP3 player Winamp, which so many of us grew up playing illegally downloaded tunes on, will soon be no more. Yes, it is actually still in existence. But won’t be as of December 20. In a world dominated by iTunes, “the first reaction to Winamp’s closure might be surprise that it still exists in the first place,” says the Wall Street Journal. That it does. AOL acquired it in 1999, just two years after its creation, and when it was as hot as it gets, with its $80 million purchase of Nullsoft. The AOL subsidiary has even continued tending to the once-venerable MP3 player, releasing updates and versions for Mac OSX and Android. Winamp made its announcement as it released its latest, and last, update to Windows. This and other versions will still work after December 20, AOL said. However, “Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available” and “Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download.” 🙁 Winamp became a ubiquitous piece of software when Napster exploded onto the scene in the late 1990s. Once you got your music, that’s what played it. As popular as it was then, it’s that scarce now. The general consensus among fans today is that they didn’t know it was still around. Not shocking, as AOL essentially killed the player a long time ago. When AOL bought Winamp and music-streaming service Spinner, it aspired to be really big in music, and create within its four walls the next MTV. But when AOL threw the two companies together, putting Spinner in charge, the lack of guidance and resulting culture clash handicapped both. Between 2002 and 2007, Winamp was an asset that “AOL knew was valuable but didn’t know what the f–k to do with,” according to one insider. AOL made matters worse by insisting that the entities be subservient to AOL’s email-internet-portal service – not popular with Winamp’s base of fans. Apple’s iPod and iTunes were the final straw. R.I.P. Winamp. R.I.P.
