Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Fall In Love All Over Again

Romantic clip for title track of pop star’s forthcoming album co-stars actor Josh Kloss. By James Montgomery Josh Kloss and Katy Perry in the “Teenage Dream” music video Photo: Eric Ford/Danny Mayer/ On Location News You’ve got to hand it to Katy Perry : she’s really hitting on all cylinders these days. “California Gurls,” the first single from her album Teenage Dream , was the official anthem of the first half of summer, a fun and flirty song that probably served as the soundtrack to your various beachfront flings. And now, she’s back with the album’s title track — and second single — which will undoubtedly serve as the soundtrack to one of those flings blossoming. She’s got you covered every step of the way … it’s sorta brilliant, really. Both “Teenage Dream” and its accompanying video are about falling madly in love, about losing your inhibitions and getting jelly-kneed by the mere thought of being near that certain someone. Sure, you may have snogged your fair share of guys or gals down the shore this summer (that’s what “California Gurls” was for), but now you’ve found the one that makes you feel all giddy inside, and you’re ready to let your guard down and go head-over-heels. “Dream” is all those gooey feelings turned into a pop song. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who fills it with gauzy, sunset-tinged scenery: a beach in the waning light, the rapidly darkening hills of California, the incandescent glow of a pool in the early evening. Much like the song itself, the entire clip feels like a wooshing, love-drunk dream. Perry frolics with a frequently shirtless hunk (actor Josh Kloss) and is giddy throughout. She brings her friends (including L.A. socialites Ana Calderon and DJ Skeet Skeet) along to share in the merriment, and they throw impromptu dance parties all over Southern California. It all possesses an unwound, unabashed glee — the kind of bliss that only comes when you first fall in love, when everything seems to be taken from a movie (or, in this case, an Abercrombie & Fitch billboard) and nothing seems impossible. In that regard, it fits the feel of the song perfectly. Perry always stays on message. There is no deviation. It’s ingenious, not to mention a little frightening. Welcome to your favorite song of the second half of 2010, the one you’ll fall in love with (and to). You are powerless to resist. What do you think of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”? Katy Perry Lives Her ‘Teenage Dream’ At Teen Choice Awards

Pop star performs latest single, dresses as high school characters and wins two surfboards during hosting gig. By James Dinh Host Katy Perry performs during the 2010 Teen Choice Awards Photo: Getty Images In a giant outline of a neon-lit heart, Katy Perry stood still as she began to sing the lyrics of her latest single “Teenage Dream.” Opening the 2010 Teen Choice Awards with a flashy performance of her feel-good song was just the first step in jump-starting the show, which she hosted alongside the guys of “Glee” on Sunday. “I’mma get your heart racing/ In my skintight jeans/ Be your teenage dream tonight,” Perry sang a cappella inside the flashing red heart. Screens filled with falling white drops filled the set as a duo of cheerleaders dashed behind the singer. When the chorus kicked in, Perry ran to the center of the smoky stage. Dangling in front of a towering boxed cage, Perry later joined her dancers for some loose choreography as the stage turned dark with an array of extras dressed as high school stereotypes, including jocks, cheerleaders and hippies. In a dramatic ending, the dancers left the singer solo as she raised her right hand and a shower of fireworks sprinkled over her. “Welcome to my teenage dream come true: the Teen Choice Awards 2010!” she screamed to the roaring audience. “Teenage Dream” took a whole new meaning during the singer’s gig as host of the awards show, which aired Monday night (August 9). The pop star took the opportunity to turn back the hands of time and play desired high school characters with “Glee” boys Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Mark Salling. “Look at how handsome these boys are tonight. I kind of feel really popular, like the popular girl in high school,” she told the audience. “Tonight is my chance to go back to high school,” the pop star said in a sparkly, strapless minidress. “Do I want a sexy jock or do I want a sexy geek? But why do I have to pick just one? I insisted that all of you guys be here tonight to host with me,” Perry said as she stood in between a line of “Glee” gentlemen. Whether it was a forcefully hostile cheerleader who didn’t know her chant or a bug-eyed goth chick with enough fishnets and accessories to last her the entire school year, Perry’s hosting talents proved comical. But her variety of costumes shouldn’t be too surprising, as the singer hinted to MTV News back in June that “there’s a lot of Velcro involved. But it’ll be fun.” In addition to her hosting duties, the singer also visited the podium to accept surfboards (“Choice Music: Single” and “Choice Summer Music Song”) for West Coast anthem “California Gurls.” She later took to Twitter to celebrate her award, writing, “Oh my goth I won a surfboard.” If you can’t get enough of Perry, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the release of her new video for “Teenage Dream” premiering Tuesday. Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Watch A Steamy Sneak Peek!

In the 30-second teaser, Perry dances and locks lips in her California hometown. By James Dinh Katy Perry in the video for “Teenage Dream” In Katy Perry’s last music video, for “California Gurls,” she played a female voyager avoiding Gummi Bears, laying nude on cotton-candy clouds and making her way through what she called “Candyfornia.” But her follow-up music video, for “Teenage Dream,” will bring the singer back to her California hometown as she ventures on a sunny road trip with her lover and friends. In a 30-second teaser, Perry appears as carefree as ever in a dancing, lip-locking montage throughout locations in Santa Barbara, California. Whether it’s basking in the sun of her blue Cadillac as her love interest (played by Josh Kloss) drives next to a carful of laughing friends or getting steamy with Kloss as he pushes her into a hotel bed, the clip’s teaser resonates with the song’s feel-good melody. Katy and friends decide to skip the swimwear and visit a beach as they shed their clothes and dance the afternoon away. Directed by Yoann Lemoine, the video — which premieres Tuesday — was shot in mid-July. Perry cast some of her real-life friends in the clip. She took to Twitter to talk about the “gorgeous” shoot. “Cut, copy, print, moving on! That’s a wrap for Teenage Dream! So gorgeous, I really can’t wait to see what [director] Yoann Lemoine makes of it all!!!” she tweeted. “In my hometown. I got to cast all my friends in the new music vid for Teenage Dream = amazing insanity.” Last month, Perry spoke to MTV News about the track and explained that she had flashbacks of young innocence when writing the song. “I wrote that song in Santa Barbara, and it was a very pure moment for me, because that’s where I’m from,” she told MTV News. “And it was, like, where I started my creative juices. And also it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling, because everybody remembers what their teenage dreams were — all the girls that were on your poster walls.” This isn’t the first teaser Team Katy has provided: She uploaded an lyric YouTube video with various shots from the clip . Katy Perry Says Mixing Sex And Religion Makes ‘Bad Things Happen’

‘I am sensitive to … Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth,’ singer tells Rolling Stone. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Mike Marsland/ WireImage Despite her recent skin-baring spreads for magazines like Esquire and even her own Teenage Dream album cover , Katy Perry says she’s still modest about some things. In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, the California Gurl takes a bold stance against what she describes as inappropriate use of religious imagery and reveals why her debut single, “I Kissed a Girl,” was not a contradiction of her religious upbringing. “I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord’s name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth,” she says in the August 19 issue. “I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.” This isn’t the first time that Perry has taken a stab at Lady Gaga. After the premiere in June of Gaga’s “Alejandro” video, which features the singer seemingly swallowing a rosary whole, Perry tweeted, “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.” Perry later backtracked somewhat from the tweet , saying her anger wasn’t directed solely at Gaga. “What’s funny is that everybody was assuming I was directing it completely towards her, and if I was directing something I would write their ‘@,’ ” she told a French radio station. “Lately, I’ve just been seeing some things that are kind of like, I don’t know, in my own personal feelings, a little bit like not something I would do, I guess.” For those who are raising an eyebrow at Perry, a pop star who has participated in her share of provocative photo shoots and videos — her “California Gurls” wardrobe includes a whipped-cream cone bra — she fired back a few words in response, telling Rolling Stone, “Yes, I said I kissed a girl. But I didn’t say I kissed a girl while f—ing a crucifix.” What do you think about Katy’s stance on sex and spirituality in pop music? Sound off in the comments! Avenged Sevenfold Bump Eminem From Billboard #1

A7X’s Nightmare ends Recovery ‘s five week reign. By Gil Kaufman Avenged Sevenfold drummer The Rev Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Last week, we wondered how long Eminem ‘s Recovery could hold on to the pole position on the Billboard 200, predicting that it might run the board until Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream drops on August 24. Someone forgot to tell Avenged Sevenfold . The SoCal hard rockers have managed to end Slim Shady’s five-week run at #1 with the best debut of their career. Their fifth album, Nightmare , debuts at the top on next week’s chart on sales of 163,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was just enough to edge out Em, who drops to #2 (159,000 units shifted),as Recovery edged toward the 2 million mark and he celebrated his nine VMA nominations . There are no other debuts this week, and the rest of the top 10 just features a shuffling of the cards. Last week’s #2, Rick Ross ‘ Teflon Don, only falls one slot to #3, but with a 64 percent sales drop-off, the Bawse sold considerably less product (63,000) in his second week on the charts. Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 moves up a few to #4 (38,000), Drake ‘s Thank Me Later drops one (#5, 34,000), Kidz Bop 18 is down one to #6 (29,000), Lady Antebellum ‘s still-strong Need You Now is up two (#7, 27,000), Sheryl Crow ‘s 100 Miles From Memphis drops 5 to #8 (24,000), VMA queen Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame is up to #9 (24,000) and NOW 34 is down two spots to #10 (22,000). Veteran rapper Tech N9ne ‘s collabos album The Gates Mixed Plate — featuring Big Scoob , Glasses Malone , Devin the Dude and Brotha Lynch Hung — debuts at #13 (17,000). Fat Joe ‘s The Darkside Vol. 1 has a soft landing at #27 (12,000). Further down the line, R&B vocal group Dru Hill celebrate Indrupendence Day with a #30 bow on sales of 11,000, and new indie buzz act Best Coast sail into the #36 spot with Crazy for You (10,000). The iTunes charts tell a similar story, as Eminem holds on to the #1 slot on the singles tally with the smash Rihanna collabo, “Love the Way You Lie,” while A7X takes over the top spot on the album list. Nightmare is followed by Em’s Recovery , Ross’ Teflon Don , Drake’s Thank Me Later , Gaga’s Fame , an iTunes session from former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant at #6, the Black Keys ‘ Brothers , Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More , the Hans Zimmer score to “Inception” and B.o.B ‘s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray . While iTunes does not provide detailed sales data, it’s clear Em’s hold on the top of the singles heap is safe, as the rest of the top 10 is essentially the same as it was last week with just one new title, Usher ‘s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” at #6. Otherwise, it is: Taio Cruz ‘s “Dynamite” (#2), Enrique Iglesias ‘ “I Like It” (#3), Katy Perry ‘s “Teenage Dream” (#4), Perry’s “California Gurls” (#5), B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (#7), Mike Posner ‘s “Cooler Than Me” (#8), Jason Derulo ‘s “Ridin’ Solo” (#9) and Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” It’s not likely that Eminem will retake the top spot next week, as the Arcade Fire ‘s buzzed-about The Suburbs is due to debut, along with new albums from Bun B , Buckcherry and a Lady Gaga remix album.

Katy Perry Teases Her Teen Choice Awards Wardrobe

‘There’s a lot of Velcro involved,’ the host reveals to MTV News of her costume ideas. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News The Teen Choice Awards nominations are in and as host Katy Perry gears up for her August 9 gig, she warns that just about anything is possible once she takes the stage. “What are you not gonna see? That’s the thing!” she teased to MTV News after the listening party for her Teenage Dream LP in New York City. “I mean, I always have a fantastic time hosting these types of things,” Perry added, “and pull out costume after costume after costume.” While Perry was vague about possible wardrobe choices, she did say that viewers should expect to see progressively less clothes as the night wears on. “Usually I start wearing like a layer of clothes and then I just rip off,” Perry told us. “There’s a lot of Velcro involved. But it’ll be fun and I love teenagers because [whereas] children are not jaded and just full of life … teenagers are a little like, ‘Prove to me you’re cool,’ and I’m gonna prove to you that I’m kind of cool. I am not pop-star lame, I am not hipster cool — I am somewhere in the middle.” At the MTV Movie Awards this month, Perry performed her chart-topping “California Gurls.” But the singer revealed she might try out the title single off her August 24 album, performing “Teenage Dream” at the awards show. “I think I might be doing the second single off the record. It’d be a great place … at the Teen Choice Awards because I think a lot of kids are falling in love and they will relate to that song,” she explained. “That song is kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. … It’s intense being in love and being a teenager. That’s what ‘Teenage Dream’ is about.” And speaking of deeply felt adolescent love, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which is up for a number of Teen Choice Awards, pretty much sums up the subject of Perry’s next single. “That’s being a teenager right there,” she agreed. “That would be that dynamic of love.” Are you excited for Katy Perry to host the Teen Choice Awards? Katy Perry’s Evolution: Teen Church Singer To Teenage Dream

The 2010 MTV Movie Awards performer has come a long way since her Nashville days. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Katy Perry’s journey to the top of the pop world actually began in a far different place: Nashville, Tennessee. The daughter of pastors, she spent her early years singing in churches, then went to Music City as a fresh-faced 15-year-old looking to score a record deal. In the years that followed, it’s been a pretty amazing ride, one that doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. On August 24, she’ll release the follow-up to One of the Boys, Teenage Dream, and she’s already got a brand-new single — the beach-ready “California Gurls” — that’s burning its way up the charts. She’s also just been confirmed as a performer at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . It’s looking like 2010 is going to be a very big year for Perry. So, before things get too hectic, we figured now would be a good time to take a look back at just how far Perry’s come. In her own words, here’s how she evolved from gospel-singing teen to chart-dominating, girl-kissing pop sensation. From California to Nashville (And Back Again) Born in Santa Barbara, California, Perry headed to Nashville in early 2000 with dreams of landing a recording contract. “When I was 14 or 15, I started going to Nashville, Tennessee, to start recording gospel songs and be around amazing country music veterans and learn how to craft a song and play guitar,” Perry said. “I have definitely grown up and changed a lot.” After failing to make an impact in Nashville, she changed her last name from Hudson to Perry, moved back to her native California and teamed up with famed producer Glen Ballard, eventually scoring a deal with Island Records. Perry got to work recording an album that, as it turned out, would never see the light of day. But the fire had clearly been lit. For the next seven years, she’d grind it out, bouncing between labels and writing partners, making cameos in music videos and, finally, hitting it big in 2008 with “I Kissed a Girl,” the first official single from her One of the Boys album. And the rest, as they say, was history. “I came from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. With a wonderful producer named Glen Ballard, who brought me out here and kinda looked out for me for three years,” she explained. “After being signed and dropped, signed and dropped, signed and dropped by a couple different record labels whose names I will withhold, Capital Records picked me up.” Kissing a Girl (And Liking It) As she said, Perry spent most of the mid-2000s bouncing between labels and teaming with a host of top-notch songwriters. In 2007, she finally found a home at Capitol Records and began working with the team of Dr. Luke and Max Martin, who helped her craft what would become her breakout hit: “I Kissed a Girl,” a tune that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven straight weeks and, in the process, turned Perry into a bona fide pop sensation. Other singles followed, and they were hits too, but Perry wasn’t content to rest on her laurels. Instead, she began looking toward the next phase of her career … not surprising for a girl who had worked so hard to get to this point. “For me in this past year and a half, I think some people have an idea of who I am or a little piece of the cake, but I get to show off,” she said. “I am really excited to be ever evolving and changing with my look, my music. It keeps me entertained as well. The next record will be very pop.” A California Gurl With Teenage Dreams Perry spent a good chunk of 2009 working on the follow-up to One of the Boys, teaming up once again with Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Teenage Dream is inspired by Ace of Base and roller-skating jams, Perry said, and the first single is a triumphant slice of summertime pop called “California Gurls,” an ode to her past and her future. “It’s so exciting [the album] is coming out this summer. It’s a summer record. It’s what I said I wanted earlier. I finally got it. We nailed it,” Perry beamed. “There might be some really cool guest’s appearance. Some rappers from the West Coast, since I am a California girl, you know.” So, with an almost certain second smash on her hands — not to mention a very high-profile wedding to comedian Russell Brand looming on the horizon — where does Perry go from here? Even she’s not sure just yet. But she knows that whatever she does, it’ll be big. “I feel like bit of a volcano,” she said. “I’m ready to explode with all of these new songs. I have a different perspective, and I changed a lot.” What would you say is the highlight of Katy Perry’s career so far? Share your thoughts in the comments. Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is A Nod To … Big Star?

Her manager suggested the spelling variation as a reference to Big Star’s ‘September Gurls.’ By James Montgomery Katy Perry?s “California Gurls” Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic You might not realize it, what with the redonkulously catchy chorus, the Snoop cameo or the lyrical mentions of Daisy Dukes-wearing beach babes who will melt your popsicle, but Katy Perry’s brand-new “California Gurls,” the summer-ready first single from her upcoming Teenage Dream album , is actually a tribute to power-pop pioneers Big Star. Well, sort of. See, as Perry recently told Entertainment Weekly, she named the tune after Big Star’s 1974 song “September Gurls,” from their seminal Radio City album. And she did so — well, because her manager is a longtime Star fanatic. “My manager, Bradford, he’s from Mississippi, and he’s a huge Big Star fan,” Perry told EW. “And with the death of one of their members, I had just written that song, and he’s like, ‘Katy, just for me, will you please title it ‘California Gurls,’ with a ‘u’? People won’t even know!’ I don’t know the whole catalog of Big Star, but I did it because Bradford is one of my best friends, and I thought it was cool, and you know, the kids like those variations.” In March, Big Star frontman Alex Chilton died of a heart attack and was remembered days later by his friends, contemporaries and surviving band members at a South by Southwest tribute concert in Austin, Texas. A spokesperson for Perry’s label, Capitol, confirmed the Big Star story to MTV News. Her Teenage Dream album hits stores August 24. No word if it will include a song named after “The Ballad of El Goodo.” What do you think of Katy’s new single? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry To Release Teenage Dream On August 24

After dropping ‘California Gurls’ on Monday, the pop singer stakes a claim on the summer. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Katy Perry has established that she’s Maxim ‘s idea of a dream come true, and now the pop singer is preparing to deliver the Teenage Dream to the world on August 24. Having already released the upcoming album’s lead single, “California Gurls,” as snippets of other possible tracks for the album have been leaking online, Perry is staking claim on summer of 2010. After Jay-Z got the party started all across the country with his track, “Empire State of Mind,” last year, Perry was inspired to write “California Gurls” for her side of the country. “Everybody was holding their drinks in the air and dancing, and I thought, ‘We’re not in New York, we’re in Los Angeles! What about California? What about all the homies, the gin and juice, the swaying palm trees, the sun-kissed skin 24-7,’ ” Perry said in a statement. “I decided that we needed to make a response. I want people to want to book a ticket to California the first time they hear it!” And to that end, she knew she had to get Snoop Dogg onboard for the track. “We thought it would sound so cool and give the song another dimension,” she explained. “Snoop is as West Coast as it gets.” Hitmaker Dr. Luke has been tweeting about the process of making Perry’s “big record” (while also posting funny cat videos, perhaps to confuse would-be leakers). And Perry tweeted about the video shoot for the single on Monday, writing, “Saw the most drool worthy cali gurls @the dance auditions for the Music Video! Ready 2 melt all popsicles around the world. #californiagurls.” Are you excited for Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream ? Discuss in the comments!
