The Bachelor Season Premiere Recap: We’re in Virgin Territory!

Colton Underwood is a virgin. Did you know that? ABC continued to hype this fact about its Season 23 star on the three-hour premiere episode Monday night, which featured Colton kissing two women and sending home seven more. “I’m the first virgin Bachelor and it’s crazy to even think about that,” Underwood said early on. “I couldn’t be more hopeful and excited.” Did his 30 suitors feel the same way, however? How did they approach the fact that he's never slid his throbbing unit inside of any private parts? Scroll down for everything you ever wanted to know about this lengthy season premiere — and visit our section of The Bachelor spoilers to see who actually wins… 1. Ready to Meet the Ladies After the usual kind of introduction — which, yes, focused heavily on both Colton’s former football career and his virginity – Chris met up with Colton outside of the mansion to meet his many suitors. 2. They Were Ready to Swipe That V Card “If I was the person that Colton gave his virginity to, I would definitely bring out all the tricks,” said Onyeka, an IT risk consultant from Dallas, Texas, at one point. 3. Et Tu, Demi? Added this suitor: “I know that he’s a virgin, which is kind of concerning. If you only ever have a vanilla cupcake, well how do you know you don’t like chocolate? How do you know you don’t like strawberry? I feel like you have to try out all the cupcakes first to know what you really want. I’m the damn confetti cake.” 4. Okay. On to the Arrivals! There was Caelynn — who currently holds the title of Miss North Carolina 2018 – wore her sash and everything! 5. Yup, She’s a Sloth There was Alex D., who dressed in a head-to-toe sloth costume (because Colton likes to take things “slowly.” Really. This was her reasoning.) and was so very into it that her arrival took up about half the premiere. 6. Pulled Over for Lameness There was Tracy, who showed up in a cop cruise because she was the self-proclaimed fashion police. Wow, huh? The sloth costume may have made more sense. View Slideshow

It’s Lit: Travis Scott, Frank Ocean & More Get The Christmas Lights Treatment

More here:

Source: Joseph Okpako / Getty Just when you thought your Christmas spirit was on ten, it’s nothing like a stroll through the neighborhood that can put things into perspective. Some people go all the way out with their holiday energy. Christmas lights are one way neighbors can uplift a cold winter, whether wrapped around big houses or spread across apartment doors. Some people even go an extra mile to make sure their luminous design is noticed. Christmas lights paired with popular music has become an increasing trend, especially in our viral social media era. While lights of the past might be designed to “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” now lights are getting a more turnt approach. High school student Hudson Hooper is one example of a light aficionado pairing his designs with popular music. He programmed his house’s Christmas lights to Travis Scott songs this year and the results were…well…lit. He arranged a medley of Scott’s biggest bangers, including, “A-Team,” “Don’t Play,” “Antidote,” “Beibs In the Trap,” “Through The Late Night,” “Pick Up the Phone,” “Goosebumps,” “Stargazing,” “Sicko Mode,” and “Yosemite.” Check out the heat below.   Hooper told Fox42 , “I just started doing Christmas lights a couple years ago and I’ve been making them bigger and bigger every year. Last year, I got the box that makes that lights go to the music and that’s been my favorite things so far.” Hooper said he spent more than six hours making sure the light-music coordination was tight. Luckily, he had practice before his big Travis showcase. A few weeks before, he set up lights to Drake ‘s “Pound Cake” and Childish Gambino ‘s “Redbone.”   Hooper’s latest work involves none other than Frank Ocean ‘s reflective “Nights.”   Surely, the neighborhood was never the same. A similar designer popped up last year in Texas when spectators witness the legendary flow of Houston rap artists.   IT Manager Frankie To-ong turned out to be the brains behind the show and he used his 20 years experience mixing music in the clubs to created the trill spectacle above. His medley included “Tops Drop” by Fat Pat , “Southside” by  Lil’ Keke,  “25 Lighters” by  DJ DMD,  Fat Pat and Lil’ Keke,  “Grillz” by  Nelly and  Paul Wall,  and “Down South” by  Mista Madd,  Slim Thug and Yungstar.  To-ong’s epic light show caught so much attention that Paul Wall even visited him to show love. Hopefully, with people like Hooper and To-ong, a precedent can be set for a hip hop Christmas light competition? Only time will tell. Until then, you can hit the next pages for more amazing light shows sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Grandmother Of 10 Dies In Jail While Being Held On $300 Bail

The rest is here:

$30 could have potentially saved Janice Dotson-Stephens’ life. The 61-year-old grandmother of 10, from Texas, died in jail after being held on $300 bail since July 17. She was reportedly charged with criminal trespassing. However, her family didn’t know she was being held until her unfortunate passing. The in-custody death of Janice Dotson-Stephens, who languished in a Texas jail for months over an alleged minor offense, showed how the cash bail system can tragically kill people… https://t.co/d6V7RiIrT5 pic.twitter.com/l1KWueur99 — NewsOne (@newsone) December 19, 2018 Dotson-Stephens had a history of mental illness. According to Refinery 29 , Dotson-Stephens struggled with manic depression and paranoid tendencies for more than 40 years. “Despite her illness she was a great mother,” Michelle Dotson told Refinery29. “She knew she didn’t always have control and so when she did, she wanted us to be our best.” This instance wasn’t Dotson-Stephens’ first run-in with law enforcement. In the past, when she was arrested the family would be informed and she would be transferred to hospital and placed under psychiatric evaluation. “She had people who loved her and family who would have easily paid the $30 USD to get her out of jail if that’s what we had to do to take the next step,” Dotson-Stephens’ sister-in-law Leticia Dotson said in an interview with KSAT ABC . Her death is being investigated by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Black women continue to die in police custody. Earlier this year, Sandra Bland’s family released a documentary that explored the circumstances around Bland’s mysterious death . We hope all families get the justice they deserve. How The Cash Bail System Can Literally Kill You

T he in-custody death of a woman who languished in a Texas jail for months over an alleged minor nonviolent offense showed how the cash bail system can tragically kill people. See Also: Fight For Bail And Pretrial Reform Is Steadily Gaining Steam This Year The Bexar County medical examiner concluded that 61-year-old Janice Dotson-Stephens died Friday of natural causes, KSAT-TV reported. She was arrested in July for trespassing on private property and was sitting behind bars ever since because she couldn’t afford the $300 bond. The news outlet speculated that local bail bond companies would have charged her just $30, or 10 percent of her bond, to arrange her release. Dotson-Stephens’ family said they were unaware that she was in jail and believed she was getting treatment at a state hospital for mental illness. “We just felt that she shouldn’t have died as a criminal in the jailhouse. She wasn’t a criminal. She had mental health illness,” her daughter-in-law, Leticia Dotson , said . Anger over her death lit a fire under Alec Karakatsanis , the founder and executive director of Civil Rights Corps  who blamed society for Dotson-Stephens’ unfair treatment because she was poor and Black. “We are all responsible for the injustices of our legal system, and for the suffering inflicted in our name. We must all find out about what our court bureaucracy is doing to poor people and people of color every day, and then we should all organize against it,” he told NewsOne in an email Tuesday afternoon. A woman was held in jail for six months because she couldn’t afford to pay her $300 bond. She just died in custody. This is tragic and exactly why we need to reform our money bail system. https://t.co/FAQEoUQYVp — Kamala Harris (@SenKamalaHarris) December 18, 2018 African-Americans have long been  disproportionate victims of the cash bail system. Nationally, Blacks get detained in jail at nearly five times the rate as whites. Moreover, African-Americans aged 18 to 29 typically receive significantly higher bail amounts than other defendants. Activists were pushing for bail and pretrial reforms across the nation and some progressive local governments were instituting reforms. In Atlanta, for example, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms signed an ordinance in February that eliminated cash bonds for release from the City of Atlanta Detention Center. The movement received a major boost in July through a federal appeals court decision that upheld the constitutionality of a New Jersey law that reformed the state’s bail system. At the same time, the ruling provided a court-approved reform model that other states could follow. In the New Jersey  ruling , judges acknowledged that the state instituted the reforms to address inequalities—also found in other states—that kept poor people behind bars for nearly a year on average while awaiting a hearing because they couldn’t afford to pay bail of $2,500 or less. It appeared that the mistreatment of Dotson-Stephens may run deeper. The court ordered her to undergo a psychological evaluation while in custody, but the results were not reported immediately. T he hit late-80s sitcom A Different World was instrumental in shaping the narrative surrounding Black students and higher education. The cast of the show recently paid it forward by presenting a $100,000 check from Ford to an HBCU, Ebony reported. The Cast of 'A Different World' Discuss the Show's Cultural Impact https://t.co/MuzZcZkKaC #HBCU #HBCUnews — HBCU Lifestyle (@HBCU_Lifestyle) November 21, 2018 The check, which was a part of Ford’s Ultimate Homecoming Takeover initiative, was given to Southwestern Christian College in Texas, the news outlet writes. The initiative was launched as an avenue to empower Black students to further their education and strengthen programs at historically Black colleges and universities across the country. Amongst the cast members who presented the check were Cree Summer , Jasmine Guy , Darryl Bell , and Kadeem Hardison . The actors discussed the Black experience at colleges and universities throughout the country and spoke about the influence of their show. “I loved the diversity of the cast. Usually, actors are the Black person on a show [as in there’s only one type of black person] and it’s very hard to represent everything about Black people in one person,” said Guy, according to the news outlet. “We had different classes, different colorings, different backgrounds, different aspirations and that’s one thing I loved about A Different World . It showed the true spirit about what being Black is, and that it is diverse within itself.” Bell added that the show was powerful in sparking important conversations surrounding the Black community as the storylines addressed social and political issues. “No matter what topic was discussed, it wasn’t a monolithic response; it was something that was always challenging and relevant, it was important and we managed to be funny while we did it! That’s why I think it lasted so long and stayed evergreen,” he said. Several celebrities have shown their support for HBCUs this year. In July, Beyoncé awarded eight HBCU students with scholarships. George H.W. Bush Dies; Former President Was 94

George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States and the father of ex-Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush, died on Friday night. He was 94 years old. The sad news was confirmed yesterday by spokesperson Jim McGrath. “George Herbert Walker Bush, World War II naval aviator, Texas oil pioneer, and 41st President of the United States of America, died on November 30, 2018. “He was 94 and is survived by his five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two siblings,” the former president’s office said in a statement. Concluded this message: “He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara; his second child Pauline “Robin” Bush; and his brothers Prescott and William or “Bucky” Bush.” Bush, a Republican who held the Oval Office for one term, was hospitalized back in April , just one day after laying his beloved wife to rest. He had contracted an infection at the time, but it’s too early right now to know the President’s cause of death. Son George W. spoke on behalf of his siblings with a statement of his own shortly after his father died on Friday.  It reads as follows: Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died. George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens. Funeral details will be announced in the coming days, McGrath also noted. On Twitter, meanwhile, President Trump wrote the following: “President George H.W. Bush led a long, successful and beautiful life.  “Whenever I was with him I saw his absolute joy for life and true pride in his family. His accomplishments were great from beginning to end. “He was a truly wonderful man and will be missed by all!” He and wife Melania also released a lengthy statement that we have included below: Prior to his time as the most powerful man in the world, the Massachusetts native served as an aviator in the Navy and flew 58 combat missions during World War II. He was awarded three Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bush then served as Vice President for eight years to Ronald Reagan. He was a congressman, ambassador to China and director of central intelligence, receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. The former President’s death comes just eight months after his wife of 73 years, Barbara, died on April 17. Even after her passing, Bush remained devoted to his late wife, sitting beside her casket for hours in his wheelchair as mourners paid their respects while she lay in repose one day before her invitation-only funeral. The photos of his tribute made their way around the Internet at the time. Bush’s grandchildren affectionately nicknamed him “Gampy,” and Bush Hager has said on The Today Show that her grandfather “really is one of the most humble, wonderful men.” We send our condolences to his loved ones. May George H.W. Bush rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2018: In Memoriam
