Worst date ever: Boyfriend bails as foul ball hits girlfriend

–Many women would do anything for a boyfriend who likes to dance. But as one woman unfortunately learned on Monday, a man who decides to do the Texas two-step and electric slide away from your side as a foul ball screams toward you into the stands is far from a dream date. In one of the funnier foul ball mishaps I've seen, a woman named Sarah was struck with a foul ball at the Houston Astros game after her male companion named Bo ducked out of the way. As most of the blogosphere is noting this morning, chivalry is officially dead. After all, if a man can't abide by the simplest rule of a baseball date — don't let your company get hit by a foul ball — what hope can women hold for things like flagging down the beer vendor or having their scorecard kept when they head to the ladies room? On the bright side, Sarah's only injury was a bruise and Bo's strict interpretation of the term “dodgeball” earned the couple a lighthearted moment in the spotlight. Sarah later told the Astros television reporter that she, unlike her boyfriend, saw it coming: “As soon as we got here and I saw where we were sitting, I said 'Baby, I'm going to get hit,” Sarah said. “He said, 'No, you won't. I'll catch it if you do.' We just had this conversation and sure enough, the ball comes at me. He just bailed.” So what was Bo's excuse for his comedic act of temporary cowardice? Well, he claimed to have lost Chris Johnson's(notes) drive in the lights at Minute Maid Park. Of course he lost it in the lights. Here's hoping that the couple stopped at a sporting goods store for some eyeblack. You know, just after their postgame trip to the florist. This Week’s Corrupt Cops Stories

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, one man was released from prison and another had charges dropped in a police corruption scandal that continues to fester. So far, 14 people have been freed from prison or had charges dropped in the scandal in which six former and current police officers have been charged in federal court with offenses including drug conspiracy, perjury, witness tampering and civil rights violations. Two men, former Tulsa Police officer John Gray and former US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agent Brandon McFadden have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors. Gray admitted to lying on search warrant affidavits in the case of Hugo Gutierrez, who was released from federal prison last Friday. Gray also admitted stealing $10,000 from Gutierrez when he arrested him. Charges against Deon White were dropped July 29. His case is one of 53 associated with undercover Tulsa Police Officer Jeff Henderson, who was indicted July 20 on 58 counts of drug conspiracy, perjury, witness tampering and civil rights violations, federal court records show. The Tulsa World is keeping track of it all here. In Austin, Texas, a former Austin police officer went on trial Tuesday for having sex with a hooker while on duty and paying her with drugs. Scott Michael Lando faces charges of prostitution, delivery of a controlled substance, misuse of official information, and aggravated assault by a public servant for a series of incidents dating back to May 2006. This trial only deals with four prostitution counts and will feature the hooker, who will testify that Lando gave her drugs and other items in return for sex. Prosecutors already told the court Lando had access to drug dealers and got drugs from them. The state will decide later whether to move forward on the other counts. In Barboursville, West Virginia, a Western Regional Jail guard was arrested August 3 after getting caught in a sting by authorities. Nathaniel Shawn Johnson, 22, went down after the West Virginia State Police got a tip that he was bringing drugs and tobacco into the jail. They then used an undercover officer, who paid Johnson $300 after he agreed to buy and deliver Oxycontin and tobacco to the jail. He is charged with conspiracy and bringing a weapon onto jail grounds (he had a .22 rifle in his pickup). http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/2010/aug/11/weeks_corrupt_cops_stories added by: JackHerer

Medical Marijuana Patient Faces Life in Prison for a Half Ounce in Texas

Texas does not have a medical marijuana law, and its authorities do not recognize having a recommendation from another state as a defense against prosecution. Diaz has attracted supporters both inside Texas and nationally. The Texas Coalition for Compassionate Care and a group called I Am Sovereign are publicizing the case and pressuring Brown County officialdom. And the asthmatic Diaz sits in jail in Central Texas awaiting trial, without his medicine. http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/2010/aug/11/medical_marijuana_patient_faces added by: JackHerer

Bun B Rocks With Live Band At Houston’s House of Blues

The Trill O.G. ‘s hometown album release party set included UGK classics and a Pimp C tribute. By Cynithia Allen Bun B (file) Photo: MTV News HOUSTON — The Trill Bun B put on a memorable show for his fellow Houstonians on the heels of the release of arguably his best album to date, Trill O.G. Bun’s official album party on Wednesday was at the House of Blues and the room was packed. The Texas MC opened up the show with the classic UGK track “Pourin’ Up,” sending the crowd — reciting the track word-for-word — into a frenzy. “Smoking out, pourin’ up/ Keeping lean up in my cup, call my cars got leather and wood/ In my ‘hood, we call it buck,” Bun rapped. The Underground King then reintroduced himself to Houston saying, “What’s up Houston? My name is Bun B, I’m from Port Arthur, Texas, and my only n—-s is UGK, and it’s UGK for life!” Next up, Bun showed a different side of his stage show, performing with a live band the on the song “Trillionaires” and then for the duration of the night. “I feel like the Rolling Stones with this band,” Bun laughed. “I feel like a rock star.” The Port Arthur rapper then went deeper into the UGK vault, performing songs like “Pocket Full of Stones,” (Jay-Z’s) “Big Pimpin’ ” and “Front, Back & Side to Side,” all of which led to an emotional point in Bun’s set. “I feel like Pimp is in the building, man,” Bun said, referring to his fallen UGK partner Pimp C . “Y’all just don’t know, I really miss my brother. I love my brother.” Shortly after paying tribute to Pimp C, Bun performed a snippet of the classic “One Day.” He followed that up with another touching tribute to some of rap’s dearly missed figures, including Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G. and Houston legends Big Moe, DJ Screw and Big Hawk. Bun then shifted the mood with a choir-style sound, commanding the audience to recite after him. “Now the South is in the house and they can’t do nothing about it,” Bun said, rapping the popular hook from “Draped Up,” the first single from his 2005 album Trill. Bun wrapped the show with “Trillionaire,” off his Trill O.G., captivating the entire venue. What do you think of Bun’s newest album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Bun B

Gulf fishermen say they’re not convinced seafood is safe

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – They've waited months to get back to their livelihoods, yet some Gulf Coast fishermen are worried the waters reopened too soon, putting public safety at risk. Fishermen from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida met for hours in Biloxi Wednesday. They say they are concerned that since the oil well has been capped, the federal and state government leaders think the crisis is over. The fishermen say they have seen some strange behavior in the sea life, and they blame the chemical dispersants used to break up the oil. They want more testing done on seafood. Mark Stewart is a Mississippi fisherman. “All the sea life is trying to get out of the water,” Stewart said. “The turtles are all out there with their heads sticking out of the water trying to get air. It's not normal.” “Sea creatures that are normally bottom species are on top of the water due to the water column is so full of dispersants,” said Danny Ross, another Mississippi fisherman. “The oxygen level is so low. A Horseshoe Crab, it's on top of the water trying to swim. We've never seen that in our life. We might not be biologists, but we know our waters. This is not normal.” Gulf Coast fishermen say they chose Biloxi as their meeting place because the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Conference is underway here. Several of the fishermen told us they planned to attend the event to make their voices heard and express doubts as to whether the seafood is safe to eat. Kathryn Birren traveled from Florida for the meeting. “Fishermen do not want to lose our credibility or deliver contaminated seafood to market,” Birren said. “We have lost enough already. As fishermen, we know that the use of dispersants has made this crisis vastly worse for everyone. It has hidden the oil from view and has created a false sense of health and safety.” “We want the use of dispersants to be ceased immediately. We want seafood fresh to be tested for dispersants, which is not happening at this time. We want the dispersants tested for their harmfulness to seafood,” said Birren. “They're telling people it's okay to eat seafood from our Sound out here, it's not,” said Mississippi fisherman James Miller. “We're very concerned fishermen. The dispersants are taking all the oxygen out of the water. They don't want to come to that conclusion. They just want to sweep it under the rug.” Some commercial fishermen tell WLOX they believe low oxygen levels is the reason why they've haven't been able to catch very much seafood since the waters reopened. Fishermen created a lists of requests from the meeting: 1. The EPA and Coast Guard to discontinue current chemical dispersant use and test all seafood and fisheries with updated testing protocols. 2. BP and upcoming Feinberg Commission to establish more transparency for BP claims process and hiring practices regarding VOO program. 2. BP and federal agencies train and hire local commercial fishermen for all hazardous testing initiatives and clean -up work in a culturally competent manner. 4. Federal, state, and local agencies to develop community based health centers to service at-risk seafood industry population who are exposed to dispersants and oil clean-up. 5. Establish and fund regional collaborative scientific community to monitor and research oil spill impact on the environment. The collaborative scientific community will be advised by a committee of Gulf of Mexico resident leaders (non-related to the oil and energy industry) to ensure open and transparent centralized data management center that provides free public access. 6. Establish a regional task force with representation of community leaders from all Gulf Coast states including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to collaboratively work with federal agencies to develop a comprehensive workforce development plan. The Gulf Coast Fund organized the meeting.
