REVIEW: Post-Bromantic Attraction in Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, Or: Holmes + Watson 4eva

Romance! Jealousy! Temptation! There’s an alluring new stranger vying for Sherlock Holmes’s attentions and affections in Guy Ritchie ‘s turn-of-the-century sleuthing sequel, A Game of Shadows , but it’s not the dark and beautiful gypsy woman at the center of Holmes’s latest mystery. For that matter, Holmes’s on-again, off-again ladyfriend Irene Adler doesn’t truly have his heart, either. It’s BFF and hetero life partner Dr. Watson who forms the tale’s real love triangle with Holmes — escalating the first film’s bromantic undercurrent of mutual admiration and ” circumstantial homosexuality ” to overt, unabashed man-love and dangerous attraction — with tantalizingly evil interloper Professor James Moriarty.

Oscar Index: And the Winner is… Old

We’ve officially crossed the halfway point of this year’s Oscar Index — a bittersweet milestone where the team at Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics takes a deep breath, orders a stiff drink, and then… orders another eight or so stiff drinks. While they slam their ways over the awards-season hump, join me for a quick run-through of where things stand this week.

Meryl Streep Exercises Her Authority in Inspiring New Trailer For The Iron Lady

Chris Hemsworth and College Hotties Get the Horror Treatment in The Cabin in the Woods Trailer

If a creepy, tobacco-spitting, rural gas station attendant tells you, “I can get you there… it’s getting back that’s your concern,” as you navigate your way to a weekend house so “off-the-grid” that it doesn’t show up on the most advanced GPS system, you might turn around and floor your RV until you’re safely ensconced in suburban civilization again. But the upcoming Joss Whedon-produced horror flick Cabin in the Woods is not about you and your sensible friends — it’s about a bunch of college hotties (Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Anna Hutchison) who are willing to ignore a football field’s (or whatever unit of measure popular 20-somethings use) worth of red flags if it means they can have a kickass cabin weekend.

Watch Amanda Seyfried Throw Punches and Track Down a Serial Killer Solo in Gone Trailer

“I’ll sleep when he’s dead!” Amanda Seyfried declares in the new trailer for Gone , referencing the serial killer who has kidnapped her onscreen sis. You see, Seyfried’s character Jill is frustrated because no one in her small town believes that the serial killer who kidnapped her two years ago has now kidnapped her sister. That’s because they didn’t believe Jill’s story to begin with (and they’re probably bored with Jill’s cliched dialogue). So now it’s just Jill vs. a ticking clock vs. an unsupportive police squad who tries to convince Jill that this serial killer drama is all in her head.

Woody Allen: A Documentary Trailer: Manhattan Master Mystery

PBS’ s American Masters series is shining their “Viewers Like You”-funded spotlight on Woody Allen, who is decidedly uninterested in being a part of Academy consideration this year. In the trailer for the star-studded doc, we field gushy soundbites from Diane Keaton, Sean Penn, Larry David, Scarlett Johansson, Mariel Hemingway, Mira Sorvino, and more. Oh, and Woody also shows up.
