Blacks Are More Likely To Take On Student Loan Debt Than Whites U.S. congressman Elijah Cummings and Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently joined forces to discuss the issues with student loan debt in this country and break down the racial barriers when it comes to who is falling victim to the debt boom… Via The National Journal : Today the majority of all college students—at two-year and four-year, private and public institutions—rely on grants and loans to pay tuition. Americans now hold about $1.2 trillion in student debt, and right now most borrowers aren’t paying off their debts at all. Cummings and Warren are particularly concerned about the effect student debt has on African-American borrowers. “African-American students are more likely to take on debt—and more debt—than white, Latino, and Asian-American students,” Cummings said at the event. In 2013, 42 percent of African-American families had student loans, compared to 28 percent of white families, according to the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C. think tank. That racial gap is driven by an enormous wealth disparity, Cummings said. The average African-American household has a total net worth of $11,000, according a Pew Research Center analysis. That’s not enough to pay for even a single semester at Howard, and it’s barely enough to cover a year of tuition at a public university like the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. In contrast, the average white family has a net worth of $141,900. The startling discrepancy in household wealth means that a white family and a black family can have the same income but a radically different financial situation. It’s a disparity rooted in history, as The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates has explained, and it means that the average black family today essentially lives without a financial safety net. Student loans can be a lifeline, helping students finance college degrees even as tuition prices rise. Tyrone Hankerson, a current Howard senior, told forum attendees that he’s financing his education through a combination of scholarships, work-study aid, and a loan his parents took out on his behalf. After he graduates, he plans on going to law school. But loan payments can become a heavy burden. One Howard graduate, Latechia Mitchell, said that her undergraduate degree was largely financed by scholarships, but she took out $60,000 for graduate school and to get a teacher certification. Although she and her husband both have college degrees and professional jobs, they can afford to pay only the interest on their cumulative student debt. Discuss…

Nick Gordon To Speak On Dr. Phil Show We’ll all get to hear Nick Gordon’s side of the story pretty soon. Apparently he plans to sit down with Dr. Phil to tell his version of the events that led to Bobbi Kristina’s drowning incident that landed her in a medically induced-coma for the last month. TMZ reports that Dr. Phil and Nick will meet up in the next few days and they’ll set a time for on-camera sit-down. They say that Phil definitely plans to dig into Nick’s clashes with Bobby Brown and the rest of the family that have kept him from visiting his sister/wife while she’s been hospitalized. It’s an interesting choice, seeing as how Nick remains at the center of a criminal investigation on the circumstances that led to Bobbi Kristina being found face-down in a tub full of water in her own home. Things he says during the course of the interview are definitely admissible in a court of law, should it come to that. Nick Gordon took to Twitter this week for an epic rant about ailing girlfriend Bobbi Kristina Brown and her father Bobby Brown, who he accuses of “sabotage.” And being an absentee dad, natch. Nick expressed a range of emotions as his longtime love remains in a medically induced coma after a setback at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital. Gordon, who is under investigation after Bobbi Kristina was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub on January 31, has done this before. In fact, he says Bobbi Kristina would want him to tweet a lot . We can’t imagine she had anything like this stream of consciousness rant in mind, though. Nick writes that his “only regret” in the entire situation was not getting to Bobbi Kristina sooner to give CPR, and proceeded to rail against her family. As previously reported, Gordon has been prohibited from visiting Bobbi at the hospital, and has pointed the finger at Bobby Brown on social media. He did so again this week, and then some. During a recent episode of E!’s Fashion Police, Giuliana Rancic remarked on Zendaya’s hair with a joke that’s been criticized as disrespectful, offensive, and even racist. While discussing Zendaya’s famous dreadlocks, Rancic speculated that the 18-year-old “smells like patchouli oil…or maybe weed.” Yesterday, Rancic apologized on camera after Zendaya and an army of her fans took to Twitter to complain about the comment. The public admission of guilt may have come too late, however, as it’s being reported that many at the network believe Rancic should be fired, including her Fashion Police co-stars. “The entire cast of Fashion Police is done with Giuliana, and they are hoping that she will not only be kicked off the show, but also off of the network,” one E! insider tells Radar Online. “The network does not condone racism in any way, shape or form, and they know that their reputation is now at stake. “The staff of E! is comprised of many different races, and everyone is pissed off. 1 Killed In Terrorist Attack At Free Speech Event Valentine’s Day has been marred already, thanks to a terrorist attack that claimed the life of a civilian and injured three police officers in Denmark. According to NY Daily News reports: At least one civilian was killed and three Denmark police officers were shot and wounded during a Copenhagen cafe free speech debate hosted by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has been threatened for drawing the Prophet Muhammed, police said. Two Danish-speaking gunmen, dressed in dark clothes, are on the loose. About 30 bullets burst threw the windows of Krudttoenden cafe in northern Copenhagen Saturday after French Ambassador Francois Zimeray had just finished speaking, police said. “They fired on us from the outside,” Zimeray told AFP. “It was the same intention as the Charlie Hebdo attack except they didn’t manage to get in.” The gunmen sped off in a dark Volkswagen Polo just after the shooting around 4 p.m., police said. Authorities said they found the abandoned car in eastern Copenhagen a little while later. A 40-year-old man who was attending the event died, police said in a statement. They did not release any other details. Three police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police told reporters at 7 p.m. local time. One was struck in the groin, another in the leg and the third in the shoulder. We’re praying for speedy recoveries for the officers involved. The attempt was quite similar to the recent attack in Paris , raising concerns throughout Europe. Police are investigating whether the shooting is an assassination attempt on Vilks, who is under police protection whenever he comes to Denmark, incident commander Jørgen Petersen told TV2. At least 13 people were arrested in connection to plots to kill Vilks after he drew the Muslim Prophet as a dog in 2007. Two brothers tried to burn down his house in 2010 and were arrested for arson. Vilks, 68, said he had received fewer invitations to give lectures because of increased security concerns after Islamic militants attacked the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine offices in Paris last month. “This will create fear among people on a whole different level than we’re used to,” he said. “Charlie Hebdo was a small oasis.
