New Hampshire Voters Say College Costs, Unemployment Top Issues

‘It’s hard for graduates, not being able to pay their loans and find a job,’ one young voter tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway A young voter casts his ballot in the New Hampshire primary Photo: T.J. Kirkpatrick/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — There were no excuses to skip Tuesday’s (January 10) primary in the Granite State. The weather was balmy for this time of year, there was no snow on the ground and the body-slamming back-and-forth between the Republican contenders was worthy of a backyard wrestling ring. But what brought out an expected record 250,000 voters for Tuesday’s contest? MTV’s Power of 12 hit the polls early and late in the day to ask young voters what was on their minds when they stepped up to be counted. Lifeguard and Special Olympics basketball coach (go, Manchester Mustangs!) Keating Tufts, 21, emerged from casting his vote just before dinnertime with college tuition on his mind. “We’re paying more for school every single year, the tuition keeps on going up … I feel like [I should] do my part and vote,” said the Southern New Hampshire University student who was not willing to fall in line and cast his lot with GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, instead opting for unconventional congressman Ron Paul. “He’s got a different view than normal candidates, so I feel like it would be interesting to see what he can do.” As high school English teacher Kelly Ilacqua, 25, emerged from the Carol M. Rines Health Center in Manchester’s Ward 3, she said she went with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum because of her pro-life beliefs. “He is the author of the legislation that outlawed partial-birth abortion … and he’s also been a big proponent of two legislations that have stopped doctors in abortion clinics from ending the lives of abortion-surviving infants.” Earlier in the day, first-time voter Amelia Dickinson, 18, had several different motivations for voting. “Right now I’d have to say the economy and foreign policy … with [North Korea’s] Kim Jong-Il passing and everyone on edge about what’s going to happen next,” she said. “Obviously with the economy with how there’s so much unemployment, people are worried about inflation with the dollar. I think the next president really needs to have an understanding and know what to do with those two problems and really be willing to compromise with the two parties.” For another first-time voter, 18-year-old high school student Emily Flanders, it was not the economy but social issues including gay rights and abortion, while Andrew Judd, 19, said he was thinking a lot about foreign policy as well as who the eventual candidates are beholden to in getting to the big game. “Intellect in general, how smart the candidates are,” he said. “You want a smart president. Also, how people were financially backed. I don’t want somebody going to Washington with a lot of promises they have to fill.” Danielle Courtemanche, 23, was focused squarely on the same things so many millions of Americans are: unemployment. After meeting former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman several times at her job at the local Hilton Garden Inn hotel, Courtemanche said she felt that he understood her struggles and those of her peers and had the best plan to help them out. “As a graduate of 2011, I feel that it is very important for people my age to go out and vote. I feel like it’s a big problem,” she said of the difficulty new graduates are having finding jobs. “It’s hard for graduates with loans … not being able to pay their loans and to find a job.” Like many of the other voters MTV News has talked to in Iowa and New Hampshire, high school senior David Chester, 19, said the #1 issue is the economy. “[Definitely] the economy, which affects everyone,” he said. “I think one of the huge things that we need to acknowledge is that the financial crisis was due in large part to the financial sector, not the public sector, and a little regulation in Wall Street would not hurt to have a little responsibility there.” What issues are important to you as you get ready to hit the polls for your primary? Ron Paul Inspires Poetry In New Hampshire

One young voter described the choice this year as between ‘freedom and tyranny.’ By Gil Kaufman Ron Paul Photo: Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — “They call it the Department of Education … Let’s put an end to the Department of Indoctrination!” That kind of sentiment was flowing like extra-hoppy craft beer on Sunday night at Manchester’s only brewpub, Milly’s Tavern. It was the site of the “Slam Free or Die” poetry open-mic event in honor of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. And while the sentiment onstage was often dripping with elegantly worded sarcasm, the boots on the ground had plenty of sobering thoughts on the suddenly surging candidate who refuses by play by his party’s staid rules. Nearly a week after the Iowa caucus , Congressman Paul’s rivals continued to take digs at one another in an attempt to win over traditional GOP voting blocs and prove their family values bona fides. Libertarian Paul’s pull with younger voters, meanwhile, was inspiring the kind of enthusiasm that motivated his followers to drive in from as far as Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., to attend the slam and volunteer in the Granite State in the lead-up to Tuesday’s primary. A common theme among the Paul faithful who spoke to MTV News for the channel’s ongoing Power of 12 series was a disappointment with the Obama administration and a feeling that the promises of change touted four years ago have not come to fruition as they expected. “I think there were a lot of disillusioned voters in ’08 who thought Obama would be a good solution to the problems presented by Bush,” said Pericles Niarchos, 26, who like the 50 or so other Paul-ites in the bar was firmly focused on the poetry rather than the nail-biting Steelers-Broncos NFL playoff game being shown on the bar’s flat-screen TVs. “And after the last four years, we’ve seen the wars extended, we’ve seen [the terror detention center at] Guantanamo Bay remain open … the war on drugs continues on, we see bailout of the corporate elite that started under Bush. So, a lot of those supporters … [feel] Dr. Paul has a consistent record on these issues.” Niarchos, who recently completed a history degree with a political science minor from Drexel University, is among those who drove in from Philly to volunteer for the campaign, and he had a lot of issues on his mind. But one of the foremost was the various overseas military entanglements that are taking young lives and, he said, bankrupting the country. As to what it is about Paul — at 76, the oldest candidate in the running — that is speaking to teens and twentysomethings, Ryan Kuch, 24, said it is concerns about the economy and the libertarian call for a society that is “bottom-up … organic … people doing things, rather than top-down … people in Washington deciding what we should do to stimulate the economy.” Plus, he said, alluding to Paul’s non-interventionist theory of foreign policy, it’s his generation that will continue to pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, long after they are over. And not just with higher government debt but with issues like post-traumatic stress disorder and physical wounds that won’t heal. “Dr. Paul’s message seems to be more about sincerity and that you should be free to determine your own future,” said Niarchos. “A lot of young people today feel like they’re growing up in a world where they’re no longer free to determine their own future. They’re living in a set amount of circumstances that are being defined by older generations who don’t really understand what we’re going through. What our perspective is on the world is, what we want and what our values are … in my whole lifetime I don’t think the U.S. has been at peace for more than four years, and it’s really refreshing to see someone who advocates that so thoroughly.” “We need a cranky old president who keeps his money in a mattress,” said one poetry slam reader. Another read a piece entitled “Upholding Miserable Everywhere,” in which he selectively quoted the candidates in their own words. “I’m reciprocal,” he said, reiterating former Utah governor Jon Huntsman’s line . Another lamented that he missed the recent televised GOP debate because he was being arrested backstage after trying to “occupy” the event, and yet another referred to the various politicians as “New Hampshire’s deadbeat uncle,” who only comes around every four years when he needs something. What’s fascinating about Paul’s followers is that this poetry slam is not an isolated, election year event. They say that this is what Paul’s people do: They get together and lament the economic inequities of Pell grants, the tyranny of government’s tentacle-like reach into our pockets, the worthlessness of the Fed continually printing more money, the stifling of entrepreneurship by overzealous regulation and benefits of a free market system in the same way their peers discuss fantasy football stats. Emily O’Neill, 23, a member of the National Guard and self-described “misfit and contrarian” and “1920s feminist” who works in human resources in Washington, D.C., said the first time two Paul supporters meet each other, the opening topic is how they discovered their political icon. Dressed in cherry-red high heels, a gray skirt, ruffled white shirt and blue blazer, the New Boston, New Hampshire, native said she planned to wave signs and make calls on behalf of her candidate on Monday (January 9). “Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not about left versus right,” she said. “We all agree on freedom and more government is not working. We’re less prosperous now than when we started off even a decade ago … people now want their freedom. Especially young people. This is the Internet generation. We can go online and find the answers and find out who the politicians are who are complete hypocrites. We know the truth so there’s no kidding us anymore.” Along with her friend Josh Luedtke, 26, a Roanoke, Virginia, reservist who just returned from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, O’Neill said she might typically have been a Mitt Romney supporter. But not this time. “I came to the conclusion that what other people do, as long as it doesn’t hurt me, doesn’t affect me,” said Luedtke, who sported a red, white and blue Paul campaign T-shirt emblazoned with the word “liberty,” as well as a baseball hat that reads “Dysfunctional veteran … Leave me alone.” Inspired by the Occupy movement and the grassroots nature of Paul’s latest campaign, O’Neill said young voters are feeling motivated to get involved and be part of a new solution. “I hope that the difference between [the election of] 2008 and 2012 is that in 2008 young people came out and said, ‘We want the government to give us things.’ And in 2012, young people are going to come out and say, ‘We want the government to leave us alone.’ ” As for his peers who might be considering sitting this election out because they don’t like the options, Luedtke said they have two choices. “Freedom and tyranny. You can either vote for Ron Paul and take hold of your future with a government that is going to leave you alone … or you can choose tyranny and vote for anyone else.” Romney has a decisive lead in New Hampshire, where he’s polling at more than 41 percent, followed by Paul at 17 percent, which is not surprising given that 40 percent of the state’s voters describe themselves as independents. My name is Dani and November 26 2010 & June 23rd 2011…

My name is Dani and November 26 2010 & June 23rd 2011 were officially the best days of my LIFE! I found out one day in November that Justin would be at Barnes and Noble on 11/26/10. You have to buy First Step 2 Forever and then you got to meet him and only a certain amount of people were aloud to get in! Knowing my mom would wait all night with me to get in because we have done it before to see him in concert at the today show and since she’s a belieber also i asked her! The day of the event Justin got there after being a little late and everyone started screaming! They called next and we walked to a curtain and stood next to it and Justin was right behind it, I really couldn’t breathe. I was officially next in line and I was shaking so badly, it was crazy. A bodyguard who worked for the store put her hand on my heart and realized how fast it was beating and was like, “You have to calm down and started laughing”, and then all of a sudden I heard someone behind the curtain scream NEXT! I ran as fast as I could to get to be next to Justin in the picture and I was! He quickly said hi and we took the picture. Everyone else in the picture just walked away as soon as the picture was taken and didn’t say anything and I just stayed there and I was speechless. Completely speechless. I just looked at him and smiled and couldn’t even move. I gave him the biggest hug I probably have ever gave someone and he hugged me back and smiled he said bye and i was like, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I promised my mom before that I wouldn’t cry but as I walked away from Justin, I became a mess. I honestly went ballistic. I wouldn’t stop crying for hours, honestly hours. I thought that was the best day of my life but I was wrong. I knew Justin would be at Letterman, The View, Today Show and a meet and greet at Macys for his new perfume Someday!  I asked my mom to go and she said there was a lot going on that night but I can skip the last day of school and we will go into the city at about 9:00AM and just go to every place that he would be and see if there were anymore Macy’s meet and greets available. The women said actually, this is our last one! I was in complete shock.  I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to meet Justin but now I knew the next day I would be able to.   I started crying and my mom was like “You’re already crying!? You didn’t even meet him yet!” I was so thankful! Later that day we went to David Letterman to see Justin and we missed him by 5 minutes. We decided not to go The View and only go to Letterman and the Today Show. The next morning me and my mom woke up extremely early and went over to the Today Show (we slept in the city that night).  I wasn’t far back in the line at all! Since it wasn’t a concert he was doing an interview and he did it outside. We got put around a big square and waited for Justin to come out! He came out and did a interview and started meeting every single person there!  He came up to me and I took the picture and we both looked at each other and smiled really big to each other! He was holding a bottle of Someday and said, WANT A SPRAY!?  In the cutest, sweetest voice and I’m like yes of course!! He looked at me and smiled! But everyone was kinda pushing him to come closer to them so he had to go and he went to the next person but i went to give him a hug but there was a barricade in between us so it was pretty hard so he kinda just took my arm and held it for a few seconds and we both just looked at each other and at my arm and smiled! I was in such shock i forgot to ask him to sign my phone case! While he was in the middle of meeting the person next to me I said, “JUSTIN I FORGOT, CAN YOU PLEASE SIGN MY PHONE CASE!?” and he was like sure and signed it! Once again, I went ballistic! Later that day we went to Macy’s to meet Justin once more that day! I waited on the line for a little bit and while I was waiting I saw Adam Braun and Scooter and said hi to both of them! After waiting on that line for a while it was finally my turn! They told my mom no cameras or recording anything so she couldnt record when I met Justin. I saw Kenny and some other members of Justin’s team right before I went up to meet him and said hi to them and they were so nice! FInally a security guard screams NEXT! I was next. I walk over to Justin and he was like, “Hii! How are you?” and I’m like, “I’m good what about you?”He said he’s fine! I then said “Justin how are from when you fell outside?” He smiled really wide and said, ”I’m really good actually, thanks so much!” We took the picture and I wrapped my arms around him and he wrapped his around me also! We talked a little bit more and kids, security guards, honestly everyone near us was screaming at me so badly because me and Justin were talking for so long while everyone had like 0.5 seconds with him. I walked off and I gave him another giant hug and he gave me one right back! We smiled at each other as we said bye to each other and then i said I LOVE YOU! My mom looks at me and goes, “That was honestly incredible, I can’t even explain how amazing and happy both of you looked” and she was smiling so big and was so happy for me! I started hysterically crying… again. I saw my picture and couldn’t even believe my eyes, right there, was me hugging Justin Bieber. If I could explain to anyone how amazing these 2 days were to me, I would go on for years and years. I now have my leather jacket that I wore when I met Justin for the first time sitting on one of my cardboard cutouts of him that NO ONE is aloud to touch. The shirt I wore when I met Justin at the Today Show and the meet and greet necklace you had to wear when you met him, my signed phone case by him and a Someday water bottle that they gave out at Macys all sitting in a Shadow box! For my birthday, one of my presents was a cardboard cutout of the picture of me and Justin from Macy’s! Justin is an amazing person and if any of you have never met him, NEVER SAY NEVER View original post here: My name is Dani and November 26 2010 & June 23rd 2011…

Transgender GropeGate: David O. Russell Did What Now?

Oscar nominated director David O. Russell ( The Fighter ) has had his share of controversial moments in the public eye, but this takes the cake, and then some: According to a police report filed with the Broward County Police Department in Florida, Russell inappropriately groped his 19-year-old adoptive pre-op transgender niece while they were working out last week. Hit the jump for details if you dare, because this reaches a level of bizarre that can be a wee bit difficult to wrap your head around. An investigation is underway into the bizarre family incident, which Russell insists was innocent and consensual. But he’s at least admitted that the incident did happen. And the event seems to have gone down as follows, as TMZ reports, while Russell and his niece were doing abdominal exercises: The niece — who does NOT have a blood relation to Russell — told cops they began to talk about her breasts … and how certain hormones she’s taking have made them larger. According to the report, the niece claims Russell then “put his hands under [her] top and felt both breasts.” Cops say the woman said she felt “uncomfortable” … but admitted she “did not ask him to stop at any time.” Investigators later contacted Russell … and according to the report, the director confirmed he DID touch his niece’s breasts … but only after she gave him permission. Cops say Russell explained that during the conversation about her chest, the niece informed him that one of her breasts was bigger than the other. The official report says … Russell told cops his niece then “allowed [him] to feel both of [her] breasts.” So… yeah. According to Russell’s rep, “”David O. Russell emphatically denies any wrongdoing and has cooperated fully with the authorities.” We’ll have to wait and see how this one shakes out. In the least, it makes yelling at Lily Tomlin look like a totally normal tea party. And despite headlines like ” David O. Russell Fingered in Quasi-Incestuous, Transsexual Groping Claim ,” it’s not quite as incestuous as the setup of Russell’s feature debut Spanking the Monkey , so there’s that. In Iowa Caucus, Young Voters Could Be Crucial

First electoral event of the year takes place Tuesday, and MTV is on the scene. By Gil Kaufman Ron Paul campaigns in Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images When it comes to presidential politics, Iowa is #1 in line, no matter what. Though it only serves up around 1 percent of the national delegates in presidential contests, pundits and political junkies have looked to the Hawkeye State for more than 40 years for an early indication of who will represent the party in the race for the White House. With President Obama facing no Democratic challenger in his bid for a second term, all the attention at Tuesday’s Iowa caucus will be focused on the Republicans vying to come out on top in Iowa: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman. As of press time, libertarian rabble-rouser Paul was in the lead, in part due to his dedicated core of young supporters. Frequently ignored by the national media, Paul is an enigma in this year’s GOP field thanks to his views on legalizing drugs and abolishing the departments of Education and Commerce, among others. But according to the latest Public Policy Poll , Paul was leading the pack at 23 percent, followed by Romney at 20 and the fast-fading Gingrich at 14. Not surprisingly, Texas congressman Paul is well ahead with voters under the age of 45, with 33 percent of their likely votes compared to Romney’s 16. But the Huffington Post reported that what remains to be seen is whether those hard-partying college students intent on casting their votes for Paul will show up to the caucuses after whooping it up on New Year’s Eve and slowly making their way back to campus after the long winter break. Unlike most of the primaries over the next few months and the general election, Iowans will not walk into a voting booth and pull a lever, punch a card or swipe a touch screen to help vault one of the candidates into an early lead. In a quirky throwback to a previous time, they’ll gather in meeting halls, school gymnasiums and even living rooms to hash out their choices, a scenario that could be disorienting for young voters who may be casting ballots for the first time. With 1,774 caucuses statewide, any registered voter can show up at his or her local caucus meeting after pre-registering as a party member. Once there (the events begin promptly at 7 p.m. and last about an hour), they’ll hear bids from representatives of the candidates and then chat with friends, neighbors and strangers about the strengths and weaknesses of the various candidates as well as about issues that concern them. After everyone has said their piece, they’ll vote in a paper-ballot straw poll and choose their delegates to the state convention. Those 40 Republican National Convention delegates don’t have to immediately declare which candidate they support, but the press will quickly declare a winner based on the percentage of delegates won by each candidate. Unlike in years past, most of the leading candidates for the GOP nomination have not lavished the same kind of attention on Iowa that past presidential hopefuls have. That’s likely the reason why a recent Iowa State University/ Gazette/ KCRG-TV9 poll found that with just one week to go, nearly 38 percent of respondents said they were still trying to decide their vote, with another 34 percent saying they were leaning one way and only 28 percent locked in on the candidate they were definitely supporting. In other words, no matter who has the lead going into Tuesday night, there could be a major upset in the making if the candidates’ last-minute barnstorming blitzes have a big impact on Iowa voters used to lots of face time with their candidates. Plus, the winner doesn’t always take the prize, as in 2008, when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee came in first in Iowa , despite Romney’s lavish spending of around $12,000 per vote. That’s why candidates have historically spent months and months meeting Iowa voters and introducing themselves over and over in order to pass the most crucial Hawkeye exam: the likability test. Once the dust clears, after months of campaigning and 13 televised debates, the national press will anoint a legitimate front-runner and a number of the candidates with the lowest totals will likely hang it up. Lindsay Lohan to Ring in NYE at Dubai Rager?

Despite her claims to have passed on New Year’s gigs to focus on turning over a new leaf, Lindsay Lohan will ring in 2012 at a RAGING PARTY in Dubai. So says an overseas party planning company, at least. Lohan claims that’s complete BS though, and is threatening legal action, saying they’re just using her name to promote the event, according to TMZ . Lindsay is reportedly pissed, and rightfully so, that she’s been tied to a NYE bash on the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship in Dubai, since she ain’t going. Her always-busy legal team is pounding out a cease and desist letter claiming that she can and is prepared to sue if they continue to lie about Lohan’s NYE plans. Lohan’s rep, Steve Honig, says in a statement: “Lindsay is not going to Dubai, nor had she ever considered doing so. She will be spending New Year’s Eve in L.A. with a few close friends and family.” Sorry, people of Dubai. If you want to overpay to party with a celeb who actually will show up, and be painfully boring, go check out Kim Kardashian at Tao Las Vegas. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kid Cudi ‘Broke Down’ Over Fan Ben Breedlove’s Death

Teenager who posted YouTube videos about his heart condition died on Christmas Day. By Andrea Duncan-Mao Kid Cudi Photo: MTV News Kid Cudi wrote on his blog that he “broke down” over the death of Ben Breedlove, an 18-year-old fan from Austin, Texas, who suffered a fatal heart attack on Christmas Day. Cudi heard about Breedlove after a pair of YouTube videos the fan made went viral before his death. In the videos, Breedlove silently holds up cards that tell the story of living with a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a disease that causes the heart muscles to enlarge, making it difficult to pump blood properly. He says he “cheated death” three times: the most recent time in early December when EMTs used shock pads on his chest after his heart stopped. He described a vision of being in a white room and being with his “favorite rapper, Kid Cudi” wearing white suits and feeling “happy and peaceful” and he “couldn’t stop smiling.” He ended his videos with a card that read “Do you believe in God and angels? I do.” After watching the videos, Kid Cudi wrote: “I am so sad about Ben Breedlove. I watched the video he left for the world to see, and him seeing me in detail, in his vision really warmed my heart. I broke down, I am to tears because I hate how life is so unfair. This has really touched my heart in a way I cant describe, this is why I do what I do.” Cudi went on to say, “To Ben’s family, you raised a real hero, he’s definitely mine. You have my love.” Breedlove’s parents released an obituary in the Austin American-Statesman on Thursday (December 29) referencing the videos and writing, “Now the world has come to know our Ben. He was a genius at using the Internet to reach and influence his peers. … In the weeks prior to his death, he had faced some scary situations with his health, but had been given an amazing gift that he was determined to share; first with us, his family, and then, not surprisingly (and generously) with his YouTube audience.” Related Artists Kid Cudi

Kings Of Leon’s Caleb Followill Expecting First Child

‘We can’t wait to meet the new addition to our family,’ Followill and wife Lily Aldridge say in statement to MTV News. By James Montgomery Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill Photo: Getty Images Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge, are expecting their first child, a spokesperson for the band confirmed to MTV News on Thursday (December 29). “We are thrilled to announce that we are expecting our first child together,” the couple said in a statement. “We can’t wait to meet the new addition to our family.” The official confirmation comes one day after E! Online cited a source that said Aldridge was “approximately three months along” in her pregnancy. The two were married in May, at a ceremony held at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California after dating for more than two years. “It was the perfect day,” Followill said of the event. The announcement of the couple’s first child puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather interesting year for the Kings, who came into 2011 riding their Come Around Sundown album, feuded with “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy (who would subsequently apologize for calling the band “self-centered a–holes”) and released a well-received documentary, “Talihina Sky.” In the summer, after a much-publicized incident at a Dallas concert in which Followill claimed to suffer “heat exhaustion,” the band scrapped the remainder of their U.S. tour in support of Sundown , before returning to the road in September for a run of Canadian shows. They wrapped the year with a tour of Australia and a pair of Grammy nominations: A Best Rock Album nod for Sundown and a Best Long Form Music Video nom for “Talihina Sky.” Related Artists Kings Of Leon

Gisele Bundchen’s Versace Spring 2012 Campaign of the Day

I already posted one of these pictures of Gisele getting work for Versace because the evil empire that is Victoria’s Secret turned their back on her for reasons I am convinced are transexual related….you know with all that possibly faked pregnancy, gay marriage to a football jock who’s favorite part of the game is in the locker room and more importantly being from Brazil the hub of western trannies….but that could just be fantasy….even if fantasy of trannies is not the kind of fantasy I really fucking want….it makes me feel gay…but it is the kind of fantasy I like to think happened to add some drama to an otherwise boring post…either way here is her cleavage and some stomach.
