Bella Swan, Real Girl?

“The Twilight series challenges what I would call the ‘Buffy Summers Maxim’: that teen heroines be physically empowered, oftentimes at the expense of emotional clarity. Bella Swan diverges from many of our more recent teenaged female heroines. The ones who appear in films — the feisty Olive from Easy A , the quirky ironist Juno MacGuff — often seem to be written by thirtysomethings seemingly desperate to revisit high school to work some alchemical magic: turning the abjection of it all into a badge of indie cred. But even the more complicated female heroines of recent young adult fiction — Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games or Katsa of Graceling — embody a suspiciously pleasing, ’empowered’ form of female adolescence.” [ The Hairpin ]

The Bunny reigned supreme again as Hop grabbed the top spot for a second weekend, but at the expense of Russell Brand’s other comedy, Arthur , which could only muster a distant second place finish. In fact, when final number come rolling in tomorrow, it may be beaten out by Hanna , which notched a very close third place, followed by inspirational stump film Soul Surfer . And poor Your Highness came in at 6th, proving perhaps that a little Danny McBride goes a long way. Your weekend receipts are here.

From Alaska to Argentina by Electric Car

Photo: racinggreenendurance Congrats and hurrah for these doughty English schoolboys; they designed, built and drove an electric car, the SRZero, from Alaska to Argentina. It took 5 months and cost £3 ($4.75), aside from the expense of developing the car, of course. The 6 brainy guys from the Imperial College in London travelled 24,000 km. through 14 countries to show that electric cars can be practical in day-to-day living and to inspire maths and science students to see where studying engineering can take you. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

What a Waste of an Oil Disaster

Image credit: Oliver Bernstein, Sierra Club. With media coverage of the country’s worst oil spill fading away, recent decisions on how to handle tens of thousands of tons of boom and oily waste are going to affect people along the Gulf for years to come. That’s because BP is relying on public complacency to get away with dumping its clean-up waste in local landfills , where hazardous oily residues and chemicals, like benzene, will either slowly slither their way into nearby water streams or evaporate and affect air quality. While this pl… Read the full story on TreeHugger
