LAS VEGAS — There’s no honor among thieves, nor apparently among hackers.
A malicious ATM kiosk was positioned in the conference center of the Riviera Hotel Casino capturing data from an unknown number of hackers attending the DefCon hacker conference before someone noticed something suspicious about the kiosk.
An organizer for the conference said security authorities seized the device. It’s not known how long the ATM was in the hotel or whether it was placed there by a DefCon attendee to catch his fellow hackers or simply by an outside criminal group trying to target conference attendees.
Witnesses say the kiosk was well-placed to avoid surveillance cameras.
“In any casino anything that is considered that high value has a camera,” said Brian Markus, CEO of Aries Security who saw the machine, “and they placed it where there were no [hotel] cameras visibly watching that exact spot where the ATM was.”
Markus said it was clear to him the ATM was fake when he looked at the smoked glass on the front of the machine and noticed something funny about it. When he beamed a flashlight through the glass, instead of seeing a camera behind it, he saw the PC that was set up to siphon card data.
The ATM had been placed right outside the hotel’s security office.

SPORTS BUZZ : This is the suit that beat Michael Phelps! Phelps lost for the first time since 2005 to Paul Biedermann — who earlier this week broke Ian Thorpe’s long-standing record in the 400 meter free. It’s a miracle suit.

ROME(AP) — No bodysuit ban, no Michael Phelps.
That was the essence of what the Olympic great’s coach said Tuesday after swimming’s governing body confirmed bodysuits will be outlawed next year. The rule will not take effect until April or May, later than expected.
Bob Bowman spoke after Phelps lost a major race for the first time since 2005. He was beaten by a relative unknown wearing a suit that will be barred next year. Bowman said FINA should have banned bodysuits before these world championships because the value of world records was diminishing.
“Probably expect Michael not to swim until they are implemented,” Bowman said. “I’m done with this. It has to be implemented immediately. The sport is in shambles right now and they better do something or they’re going to lose their guy who fills these seats.
“That would be my recommendation to him, to not swim internationally – he might swim locally. But who knows. The mess needs to be stopped right now. This can’t go on any further.” Phelps was upset by Paul Biedermann of Germany in the 200-meter freestyle final. Biedermann wore a 100 percent polyurethane Arena suit, while Phelps stuck with last year’s LZR Racer from Speedo because of contract obligations. “We’ve lost all the history of the sport,” Bowman said. “Does a 10-year-old boy in Baltimore want to break Paul Biedermann’s record? Is that going to make him join swimming? “It took Michael from 2003 to 2008 to go from 1:46 to 1:42.9 and this guy’s done it in 11 months. That’s an amazing training program. I would love to know how that works.” Biedermann clocked 1 minute, 42.00 seconds, which knocked off Phelps’ world mark of 1:42.96 from the Beijing Olympics. It was Phelps’ first loss at a worlds or Olympics since the 2005 worlds in Montreal. Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals in Beijing last year, started training with Bowman in Baltimore when he was 11. “Bob chooses where I swim. He chooses the meets I’m going to swim in. He chooses what’s right for me and what’s right for my training,” Phelps said, adding that his main focus after Rome was on the 2012 London Olympics. “I have one meet that I’m looking forward to the most and that’s in three years.”

A FINA group Tuesday upheld last week’s decision to restrict males to suits that go from the waist to the top of the knees, while female suits cannot go past the shoulders or beyond the knees.
Suit materials will be restricted to “textiles,” a definition to be determined by a scientific committee. FINA also announced standards for buoyancy, thickness and permeability. The complete rules will be given to swimsuit companies by Sept. 30.
“The rules will be applied in 2010. That can be April or May. It depends on the time manufacturers need to pass from polyurethane to textiles,” FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu said.
FINA acted after dramatic leaps in technology the past 18 months led to a complete rewriting of the record book.
Through only three days of these championships, 15 world records have been set – matching the number from the last edition in Melbourne, Australia, two years ago. Five more days remain for this meet.
“I would be perfectly happy if we adjust all the records starting with the LZR. If we took them all out and went back to 2007,” Bowman said. “Even those in Beijing. We can have them in a separate list. These were done in polyurethane suits and then these are done in textile suits. Then we can start over in January and make the sport about swimming.”
USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus agreed.
“These records in swimming have gotten to the point where they get a golf clap – just a polite applause,” Wielgus said. “They’re not as special and it just raises the expectations for the athletes.”

When we talk about China we always think about the country which is opening new coal-fired power every ten days or we think about the country that does not follow all of the limits of the Treaty on climate change or we think about that place where walking without a mask on the street is more harmful than smoking thirty cigarettes a day. Yet China has also another side of the coin.China is choking in air pollution, but it is trying to become the leader of renewable sources. It has already started, few years ago, this change although at this point it works more to produce than using its products.
After having imported its first installations from countries initially leading in this field, such as Germany and Spain, China is already the world’s leading manufacturer of solar panels, which 95% exported to Europe and to the United States.
It’s going on even with the wind energy market in which it has just surpassed the United States: now China is building six power plants. Of course, then, it uses 80% electricity from coal, but this green change could change chinese mind about alternative energy.
Because there is one thing that China does not tolerate: being second in business. And because Barack Obama wants to make of U.S. the country that will create jobs with clean energy industries (he also said this when he asked the Congress to support its energy plan), Beijing can not leave alone the American giant in this field. “China is trying to recover ground in the global race to find alternatives to fossil fuels,” wrote the China Daily recently.
To do so, the Chinese authorities are financing this market with the highest subsidies in the world for energy: $ 3 a watt. The aim is also evident in this case: being a leader over other countries. According to a study of Greentech Media, in 2012, Asia will generate 82% of solar cells in polycrystalline silicon, compared to 71% in 2008. The first three producers should be China, Taiwan and Japan.
And the interest of China to a eco-friendly market could also move the production of electric cars. China is planning to produce 60,000 electric cars in 2012 and should already have an agreement with Wal Mart to sell them at a slashed prices.
The biggest polluter of the globe decided to get serious about pollution and change course. This fact it’s showed by the authorization granted a month ago to Al Gore to organize a major conference in Beijing on climate change.
The eastern world has now afraid of pollution. According to the annual report Worldwatch 2009 “How is the World – Towards a warmer world”, even India reinforced with China in fighting climate change, with more investment in the sector. And the positive aspect of the whole process is that globally the number of jobs associated with the generation of energy from renewable sources (the so-called ‘green’ work) are continually rising.
In our country, however, politics prefer to focus on the construction of nuclear power stations: more expensive, more complicated to build and, above all, so slower to cover the initial costs. Maybe we are waiting for China entirely converted to renewables to discover that we have chosen the wrong road, once again.
