Gates Foundation invests in Monsanto/ Both will profit at expense of small-scale African farmers

Farmers and civil society organizations around the world are outraged by the recent discovery of further connections between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and agribusiness titan Monsanto. Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form). “The Foundation’s direct investment in Monsanto is problematic on two primary levels,” said Dr. Phil Bereano, University of Washington Professor Emeritus and recognized expert on genetic engineering. “First, Monsanto has a history of blatant disregard for the interests and well-being of small farmers around the world, as well as an appalling environmental track record. The strong connections to Monsanto cast serious doubt on the Foundation’s heavy funding of agricultural development in Africa and purported goal of alleviating poverty and hunger among small-scale farmers. Second, this investment represents an enormous conflict of interests.” Monsanto has already negatively impacted agriculture in African countries. For example, in South Africa in 2009, Monsanto’s genetically modified maize failed to produce kernels and hundreds of farmers were devastated. According to Mariam Mayet, environmental attorney and director of the Africa Centre for Biosafety in Johannesburg, some farmers suffered up to an 80% crop failure. While Monsanto compensated the large-scale farmers to whom it directly sold the faulty product, it gave nothing to the small-scale farmers to whom it had handed out free sachets of seeds. “When the economic power of Gates is coupled with the irresponsibility of Monsanto, the outlook for African smallholders is not very promising,” said Mayet. Monsanto’s aggressive patenting practices have also monopolized control over seed in ways that deny farmers control over their own harvest, going so far as to sue—and bankrupt—farmers for “patent infringement.” News of the Foundation’s recent Monsanto investment has confirmed the misgivings of many farmers and sustainable agriculture advocates in Africa, among them the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, who commented, “We have long suspected that the founders of AGRA—the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—had a long and more intimate affair with Monsanto.” Indeed, according to Travis English, researcher with AGRA Watch, “The Foundation’s ownership of Monsanto stock is emblematic of a deeper, more long-standing involvement with the corporation, particularly in Africa.” In 2008, AGRA Watch, a project of the Seattle-based organization Community Alliance for Global Justice, uncovered many linkages between the Foundation’s grantees and Monsanto. For example, some grantees (in particular about 70% of grantees in Kenya) of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)—considered by the Foundation to be its “African face”—work directly with Monsanto on agricultural development projects. Other prominent links include high-level Foundation staff members who were once senior officials for Monsanto, such as Rob Horsch, formerly Monsanto Vice President of International Development Partnerships and current Senior Program Officer of the Gates Agricultural Development Program. Transnational corporations like Monsanto have been key collaborators with the Foundation and AGRA’s grantees in promoting the spread of industrial agriculture on the continent. This model of production relies on expensive inputs such as chemical fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and herbicides. Though this package represents enticing market development opportunities for the private sector, many civil society organizations contend it will lead to further displacement of farmers from the land, an actual increase in hunger, and migration to already swollen cities unable to provide employment opportunities. In the words of a representative from the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, “AGRA is poison for our farming systems and livelihoods. Under the philanthropic banner of greening agriculture, AGRA will eventually eat away what little is left of sustainable small-scale farming in Africa.” A 2008 report initiated by the World Bank and the UN, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), promotes alternative solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty that emphasize their social and economic roots. The IAASTD concluded that small-scale agroecological farming is more suitable for the third world than the industrial agricultural model favored by Gates and Monsanto. In a summary of the key findings of IAASTD, the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) emphasizes the report’s warning that “continued reliance on simplistic technological fixes—including transgenic crops—will not reduce persistent hunger and poverty and could exacerbate environmental problems and worsen social inequity.” Furthermore, PANNA explains, “The Assessment’s 21 key findings suggest that small-scale agroecological farming may offer one of the best means to feed the hungry while protecting the planet.” The Gates Foundation has been challenged in the past for its questionable investments; in 2007, the L.A. Times exposed the Foundation for investing in its own grantees and for its “holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.” The Times chastised the Foundation for what it called “blind-eye investing,” with at least 41% of its assets invested in “companies that countered the foundation’s charitable goals or socially-concerned philosophy.” cont. added by: JanforGore

B.o.B Kicks Off Lollapalooza: Watch Exclusive Footage Here!

MTV News follows rapper up onstage before he tears into his hits and closes with MGMT’s ‘Kids.’ By James Montgomery B.o.B performs at 2010 Lollapalooza Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — The speakers boomed the theme from “Star Wars” over the empty expanses of Grant Park, the gates opened, and the kids came on through. They were just a trickle at first, then a heavy flow, and finally a steady surge, sprinting and screaming, kicking clouds of dust up into the air. Lollapalooza 2010 was officially under way. And backstage at the Adidas Mega stage — which, conveniently enough, was adjacent to the river of kids — the first performer of the fest was getting ready. But this wasn’t your ordinary curtain jerker; this was B.o.B , possessor of two massive hit singles, a #1 album and five Video Music Awards nominations . So obviously, the kids made a beeline for the stage, set up shop on the guard rail and got ready to get wild. About this time, B.o.B was exiting his tour bus and making the long walk to the stage. Flanked by his posse, and followed by a crew of cameras, he strutted and laughed — until he got to the gangplank that ramped directly up to the sea of kids. Then the cameras shut off, his posse clammed up, and B.o.B got serious. As luck would have it, he allowed our crew to follow him up. As his name was announced, he ducked behind the stage, crouched, bobbed his head and prepared himself, like a prize fighter getting ready to go 12 rounds. Then, he hit the stage. The kids cheered, his cracking live band laid into the groove, and his double-jointed go-go dancers did their stuff. It was red-hot. He played the hits — leading the audience in sing-alongs of “Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes” — worked snippets of Vampire Weekend into his tunes and closed with a fabulously funky cover of MGMT’s “Kids.” And then, as the kids screamed their approval, he threw down his mic and disappeared backstage once again. It was a pretty excellent way to kick off a festival. And a weekend. Lollapalooza 2010 gets under way Friday — make sure to check out MTV News’ Lollapalooza Live , streaming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m., right here on MTV.com. Hours After Fireworks, Pacifica Aired Michael Moore Saying Americans Will Be Rejected from Heaven

Pacifica Radio, funded in part by federal grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, has a habit of ruining the patriotic holidays with their programming. On Memorial Day, their show “Democracy Now” hosted radical leftist Noam Chomsky railing against the “grand criminal” Ronald Reagan . On July 5, while many were still warmly recalling the Independence Day fireworks displays, “Democracy Now” aired a special interview with leftist filmmaker Michael Moore , who concluded by suggesting taxpaying Americans (even anti-war taxpaying Americans) aren’t getting into Heaven due to their government’s warmongering. Moore said he would tell President Obama to withdraw all U.S. troops now from Iraq and Afghanistan, because the wars there were immoral: I just wonder sometimes, who do we think we are as Americans, that we’re not going to have to answer for this someday? You know, whether we answer for it here or there, or if you’re a religious person and you think there’s a life after this, you know, what do you think is going to happen up at the Pearly Gates when they check your citizenship and go, “Oh, you were an American? Ha, well, here’s your list of crimes”? “Oh, yeah. No, I was against the war! I was against the war!” “Did you pay your taxes?” “Well, yeah, you got to pay your taxes.” “Well, then you helped fund this, didn’t you?” “Oh, yeah.” “OK, well, you know, turn around. You’re not coming in the Gates. ” I just—I think that there’s so much good that we could do. You know, if you travel the world, you know that people like us as people, as individuals. There’s something charming about our naïveté and our, you know, right? I mean, you know, “Hey! Hey! How ya doin’! Hey, yeah! I’m from Detroit! Yeah!” They could spot us coming. But I think we’re capable of a lot of good. And when you have a billion people on this planet that tonight cannot drink a cup of clean water, two billion who don’t have clean sanitation, what if we used our money to do that? I read this crazy statistic—and I have not fact-checked this, I’ll just throw this out there—but it was something like, for $15 billion or something like that, we could dig so many—x number of wells in the third world that would greatly reduce that number of how many people don’t have clean water. And I’m thinking, $15 billion is what we’ve been spending almost most every month on Iraq and Afghanistan. So, one month of the killing machine could give clean water to virtually all the people that don’t have it? Wouldn’t you rather be known as, you know, a citizen of a country that a child 10,000 miles away, while growing up, drinking clean water, saw that plaque on that well that said, “Brought to you from your friends in the United States of America”? That’s how I’d like to be known. Earlier in the show, Moore thanked the nuns who foiled his school newspaper career since he wrote the Catholic Church was a “woman-hating institution.” He said he showed his film “Sicko” to elderly nuns in Michigan and “nuns are great, because they know the [bleep] that goes on in the Catholic Church, and they were always more radical and more antiwar and all that, because obviously they were suffering their own oppression being nuns and just taking it out on the rest of us.”

Scarborough: POTUS Entitled to ‘Happy Place’ But Boehner Has Bad Work Ethic

On day 72 of the continued Gulf of Mexico oil spill, “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough decided to open the show by continuing to bash Minority Leader John Boehner’s work ethic. This assault comes just ten days after his assertion that he wants his leader to have a “happy place to go to” and there is no problem with, “the president golfing every Sunday.” The former Republican congressman, who quit his job, ridiculed Boehner, saying “everybody on Capitol Hill knows about John Boehner, he’s not exactly the hardest worker in the world. He’s a guy that likes golf, and he’s a guy that likes, you know, socializing.” Scarborough made sure to address that even though he doesn’t know John Boehner personally, he was just “reporting” what he heard on the Hill. To Scarborough this analysis was imperative because, “If you’re going to bend history, if you’re going to pick up 40, 45 seats, it’s a 24/7 job.” So, let me get Scarborough’s math straight. Being the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, a position of somewhat limited power, is a 24/7 job. But, the position of President of the United States, the “Leader of the Free Word,” is about a 6 day a week job and requires a “happy place to go to?”
