Emma Watson Is ‘Surprisingly Regular,’ Nina Dobrev Says At Emmys

‘Vampire Diaries’ actress also calls ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ co-star ‘impressive’ and ‘smart.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nina Dobrev at the 2011 Emmys Nina Dobrev graced the Emmy red carpet, looking red hot in a body-hugging, fiery-hued gown. Dobrev’s career is also on fire these days. She just wrapped up work on the big-screen adaptation of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and gushed about her superstar pal and co-worker Emma Watson. “It was bittersweet, and we were all kind of sad to say bye,” Dobrev told MTV News on the Emmy red carpet Sunday (September 18) in L.A. “But we still keep in touch.” And she wasn’t lying: She was just hanging with some of her co-stars. It seems there are no wallflowers in this cast. “I saw Mae Whitman last night and Dylan McDermott, who is my dad, was there last night, and Em and I talk,” she shared. “She’s back in England going to Oxford, being all book smart.” So, what is the “Harry Potter” star like? “She’s so impressive,” Dobrev said. “She’s such a smart, smart young woman and surprisingly normal and cool and regular.” In addition to her move to the big screen, Dobrev’s also got the small screen to keep her busy. Her hit CW series “The Vampire Diaries” just kicked off its third season, and Dobrev revealed that things will get spicy. “The first episode just aired, and it was gritty, but at the same time, it felt like the beginning of our show,” she said. “It was a lot about the characters, the relationships, which we kind of started to fall back from. [Expect] a lot of love, a couple of new characters, and it’s going to be really exciting.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . 2011 Emmys Ruled By ‘Modern Family’

‘Mad Men,’ ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Mildred Pierce’ also snag big awards. By Jocelyn Vena “Modern Family” castmembers Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen at the 2011 Emmy Awards Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images On Sunday night (September 18), TV’s biggest stars turned up at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles to see who would go home with hardware and who would leave empty-handed. The night’s hostess, “Glee” star Jane Lynch, opened the show with a musical number that featured “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy and a slew of other stars, like Randy Jackson and Jon Hamm, along with his “Mad Men” crew, singing about the glories of TV and the perils of awards shows. “I know this feels stupid and schlocky and already feels overly long,” Lynch joked in song. Lynch’s “Glee” alter ego Sue Sylvester, in her signature tracksuit, eventually made an appearance, and the hostess did something the show’s fans have been waiting for: She slushied Coach Sylvester. During the comedy portion of the night, “Modern Family” owned, starting with Julie Bowen beating out co-star Sofia Vergara for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. “I don’t know what I’m going to talk about in therapy now; I won something!” she joked. The Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy category was filled with “Modern Family” actors, but it was Bowen’s TV husband Ty Burrell who took it home, joking, “I have a job where every day I go to work in full makeup.” “Welcome back to the ‘Modern Family’ Awards!” Lynch joked when the show came back from break. “We decided to throw them into the drama category just to see what happens.” Charlie Sheen presented Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series to “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons. After all the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy nominees got onstage and received a standing ovation, the Emmy went to Melissa McCarthy for her work on “Mike and Molly.” In addition to an Emmy, she got a bouquet of roses and a tiara. She told the room, “Wow, it’s my first and best pageant ever.” “The Amazing Race” won for Outstanding Reality Competition right before the Lonely Island crew took to the stage , along with a number of A-listers like Michael Bolton, Akon, John Stamos, Ed Helms and Maya Rudolph, for a medley of their tunes like “I Just Had Sex,” “3-Way” and “Jack Sparrow.” “Glee” star Lea Michele and “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder then presented Outstanding Directing in a Variety, Music or Comedy Series to Don Roy King for “Saturday Night Live.” The vampy Anna Paquin and Scott Caan presented the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy series award to “The Daily Show,” which won for the ninth year in a row. As the night turned more dramatic, more and more shows got in the winning mix. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama went to Margo Martindale for her turn on the FX series “Justified.” Martin Scorsese took home his first-ever Emmy, winning Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for “Boardwalk Empire.” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Peter Dinklage for his work on “Game of Thrones.” “Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese,” he gushed. “My heart is pounding; you are a legend. … I would like to thank my dog sitter, whose name is Kitty,” he later joked. Julianna Margulies won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her turn on “The Good Wife.” Drew Barrymore passed the torch to the new “Charlie’s Angels” as they handed out the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series to Kyle Chandler for the final season of “Friday Night Lights.” Chandler thanked “the people of Austin, Texas, who welcomed us into their homes.” Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Mini Series or Movie went to Maggie Smith for “Dowager Countess of Grantham,” while Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie went to “The Kennedys” star Barry Pepper. Both Smith and Pepper weren’t there to accept their awards. It was all about “Mildred Pierce” in the remaining Mini Series or Movie categories. Outstanding Supporting Actor went to Guy Pearce, who teased, “This was really a delightful experience making ‘Mildred Pierce’: I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times and I didn’t know it would result in this,” he said holding his trophy. It was a delightful night for Kate Winslet as well, who won Outstanding Lead Actress for “Mildred Pierce. She seemed pretty stunned as she took the stage, saying, “This means such a great deal to all of us!” Next, Outstanding Mini Series or Movie went to “Downton Abbey (Masterpiece),” while Outstanding Drama Series went to “Mad Men.” “I did not think that was going to happen,” “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner said. “We are so grateful. For us and our families, this is an incredible dream.” The show has won for each of its four seasons. “Modern Family” capped its big night by winning Outstanding Comedy Series, its second year in a row. Show creator Steve Levitan said, “We are so very honored to be in this room. We appreciate every single second of this. I want to thank this amazing cast,” with a special shout-out to the show’s kid cast. Were you happy with the Emmy winners? Let us know in the comments below! SAG Awards Continue Christian Bale, Natalie Portman Winning Streak

‘The Fighter’ star Melissa Leo and ‘The King’s Speech’ actor Colin Firth also rack up awards. By Mawuse Ziegbe Christian Bale onstage at the 2011 SAG Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images The Hollywood awards season continues to trek along, and on Sunday night (January 30), the performers honored their leading lights at the 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. In an evening of few upsets, 2011 awards-season darlings like Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Colin Firth and Melissa Leo continued to cement their status as names to watch along the road to Oscar. Bale was joined onstage by real-life inspiration, Dicky Eklund, when he scored Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for “The Fighter.” Bale also dished out advice to aspiring actors, saying that it helps that he finds people fascinating but added, “Bumping into Mark Wahlberg ain’t bad.” Natalie Portman extended her awards-show winning streak by nabbing Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for “Black Swan.” Swathing her budding baby bump in a white Azzaro gown, the former child star expressed gratitude for being able to finish her education and shouted out her parents for instilling in her that she “can never be an a–hole.” Colin Firth also sprinkled some heartfelt humor into his speech when he accepted the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. “The King’s Speech” actor joked about once hoping his SAG card would land him “female attention” and entry into nightclubs and, after sizing up the A-list talent in the room, thanked security for letting him into the building. When Leo nabbed Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her role in the “The Fighter,” she hugged her co-star and fellow nominee Amy Adams and gleefully bolted toward the stage in a glittery gown, which she briefly tripped on as she reached for the award. The actress aptly took the win to pump up the importance of the guild, saying, “Unions make this country great, because it gives a voice to the working people.” Alec Baldwin and Betty White gave the first statuette of the evening to Steve Buscemi for his portrayal of a gleefully corrupt Prohibition-era politician on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” The star looked visibly touched during his first SAG win, and shouted out “Empire” director Martin Scorsese, imploring the legendary film architect — who has recently fallen ill — to “please come back.” The entire “Empire” cast later headed back onstage when they took home Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. “Desperate Housewives” siren Eva Longoria, rocking a silvery Georges Hobeika gown with a plunging neckline, and “Glee” jock Cory Monteith handed over the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series trophy to Julianna Margulies for “The Good Wife.” Accepting her second consecutive SAG win for the role, she thanked the teamsters for digging everyone out of the snow on the show’s set. Amy Poehler introduced the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series category by saying she likes her actors, and her sandwiches, “real,” “warm” and “heavy on the meat.” Baldwin walked away with the meaty win for his fifth consecutive “30 Rock” win. First-time SAG winner Betty White looked genuinely surprised when she accepted the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series award and received a standing ovation. After speaking about how she was “so lucky to be 89” and still working, she tossed in some cheeky humor by briefly fondling the nude statuette’s backside and wrapping her fingers around its groin area. One of the few actors in the room able to boast more experience than White was 94-year-old Oscar-winning legend Ernest Borgnine, who accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award following an introduction from his “McHale’s Navy” co-star Tim Conway and fellow “Red” actor Morgan Freeman. The guild also saluted late stars like Leslie Nielsen, Lynne Redgrave and Lena Horne in the “In Memoriam” segment. The event also lauded actors who have made a big impact within the short span of a television commercial with a montage that celebrated everyone from the bubbly chick in the Progressive insurance ads to Clara Peller’s inescapable Wendy’s catchphrase “Where’s the beef?” All the A-listers in “The King’s Speech” were honored with the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, but Geoffrey Rush took the opportunity to spotlight some of the cast’s younger actors, pointing out the brief performance of a stammering student. Other winners included Claire Danes for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for “Temple Grandin”; “You Don’t Know Jack” star Al Pacino for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries; and the cast of “Modern Family” for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. While many of the 2011 awards-season champions like Portman, Bale and Leo were honored, other fan and critical favorites like “The Social Network” and “Glee” went home empty-handed. Can Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly Top Jack Black and Jason Segel’s ‘Little Drummer Boy’ Duet?

Last week, comedy icons Jason Segel and Jack Black sat down at the ol’ Black family piano to duet on the holiday classic “Little Drummer Boy,” and we here at Movieline HQ couldn’t help but wonder if they out Bing Crosby and David Bowie’d Bing and Dave. (Final verdict: They didn’t.) Now, it’s Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s turn. The comedy twosome got together with Funny or Die to film a fairly straightforward remake of the iconic (and comfortably bizarre) pairing, only stopping to add a few flourishes. Like this exchange: “It’s Bowie. It’s David F***ing Bowie!” / “And it’s Bing F***ing Crosby, pal.” Click ahead for some holiday cheer.

Good Wife Status Update: Social Network Episode Coming!

The Good Wife is about to poke a little fun at The Social Network . A meta-ish episode of the CBS legal drama slated to air in February will revolve around Patric, a “sincere, shy, and unremarkable suburban kid in sandals and a hoodie” whose website has made him a fortune. The problem?

Green Lantern Trailer: Iron Man Meets Elephant Man

The first Green Lantern trailer has arrived, essentially adapting the swagger and above-average-Joe heroism of Iron Man for Ryan Reynolds and his verdant, ab-hugging CGI bodysuit. Casual flings, military might, learning when and how to use your powers… You’ll know more than a few of these tropes when you see them. Let’s give director Martin Campbell and crew some credit, however, for also crafting the most hideous comics villain I’ve ever seen .
