Can Robert De Niro Learn From These 5 SNL-Hosting Miscues?

It was announced Thursday that Robert De Niro will host Saturday Night Live on Dec. 4, and SNL fans are already nervous considering his last two outings as host. (Admittedly, the guy does look like he’s giving it his all.) But maybe the increasingly complacent Oscar-winner won’t be that bad — after all, SNL has seen far, far more challenged hosts than De Niro could ever be.

Harry Potter Casts $24 Million Spell at Midnight

Even all those Muggles queued up at Mall of America couldn’t push Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to a midnight box-office record. The seventh film in the series pulled down $24 million, a healthy gross that nevertheless fell well short of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ‘s $30 million record in June. The film did break Eclipse ‘s IMAX record, however, surpassing the old $1 million watermark by $400,000. Only $106 million to go , team! [ The Wrap ]

‘Jesus, What a Mess’: Mad Men Recapped

Every season of Mad Men has its defining WTF moment. Take Betty’s pellet-gun prowess in season one, or Freddy Rumsen’s pants-peeing in season two, or last season’s Great Lawnmower Foot Severing of 1963. The series wouldn’t be the same without these breathtaking, pitch-black detours into Mathew Weiner’s id (for better or worse), and the current season of the series wouldn’t be the same without its frequent journeys to that well for dramatic reckoning, comic relief and/or the sheer exhilaration of point-blank, old-fashioned shock. And if this year we’ve indeed seen both the best and the worst of what Mad Men has to offer, then it only fits that we have finally seen its weirdest. But was it worth it?

True Blood Sex and Violence Meter: Buried and Fairied

It’s been clear for the last few weeks, but last night’s finale drove it home: The third season of True Blood really should have ended with that episode where Russell makes his literally spine-tingling news appearance and provokes a full-out human/vampire war. Instead, the show’s follow-ups have mostly sidestepped that promising development, and all of the season’s plotlines either ran out of steam or were hurriedly shuffled away for abrupt character reboots that felt like an overeager jump on season four. The season began strong and laid out a lot of promising ideas, but that finale…well, let’s see how it fared via the Sex and Violence Meter, shall we?

The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to Chelsea Handler’s VMA Performance

Note to future Video Music Award hosts: Television critics are generally not fans of herpes humor, pre-taped sketches parodying sexual harassment, overtly sexual come-ons, one-liners about accidental pregnancies, casual racism, or any kind of material about your promiscuity and/or alcoholism — at least if you’re a female comedian. Take Movieline’s word for it, because Chelsea Handler learned the hard way. Read on for nine criticisms — from fair to downright hateful — of the first lady VMA host in sixteen years.

True Lies Will Be a TV Series

A few years after a TV adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith tanked at the pilot stage, Hollywood is giving True Lies a small-screen spin (even though the “married people with guns” genre may be rather crowded after Undercovers premieres). James Cameron will produce the series adaptation of the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Jamie Lee Curtis action comedy, and the project is currently out to networks. Don’t blow this golden opportunity, Tom Arnold ! [ Deadline ]

On DVD: 7 Other Desert Islands You Could Try Getting Lost On

With the series’ final season out now on DVD, you can’t be blamed for having Lost fatigue, generally experienced as a repetitive weary squint and a growing intolerance for elaborate enigmas. But as escapist locales go, remote tropical islands never go out of fashion — and so let’s review some alternative getaways worth viewing at home:
