Fair Or Foul?? Study Shows Most Americans Believe Businesses Have The Right To Deny Gay Couples For Religious Reasons

Poll Shows Most Americans Business Have A Right To Deny Gays Via The Grio reports: While finding that Americans narrowly favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry, a new Associated Press-GfK poll also shows most believe wedding-related businesses should be allowed to deny service to same-sex couples for religious reasons. Roughly half the country also thinks local officials and judges with religious objections ought to be exempt from any requirement that they issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, according to the poll. That view of the same-sex marriage issue echoes that of the Mormon church. Last week, the church called on state legislatures to pass new laws that protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination but also to protect the rights of those who assert their religious beliefs. David Kenney, a self-employed Catholic from Novi, Michigan, said he’s fine with same-sex marriage being legal. He’s among the 57 percent of Americans who said wedding-related businesses — such as florists — should be allowed to refuse service if they have an objection rooted in their religion. “Why make an issue out of one florist when there are probably thousands of florists?” asked Kenney, 59. “The gay community wants people to understand their position, but at the same time, they don’t want to understand other people’s religious convictions. It’s a two-way street.” Kenney isn’t alone. About a quarter of those who favor legal same-sex marriage also favor religious exemptions for those who issue marriage licenses, the poll finds, and a third say wedding-related businesses should be allowed to refuse service. Geri Rice, who lives near San Francisco and works in law firm management, strongly favors gay marriage. She’s torn about whether a public official with religious objections should be exempt from issuing a license but says she believes that business owners should be allowed to tell somebody no thanks. “I don’t like it,” Rice said, “but I think they have the right.” Whether a business can refuse service to someone is a matter of federal, state and local law. National gay-rights groups called the idea of trying to carve out religious exemptions in anti-discrimination statues, such as those proposed by leaders of the Mormon church, deeply flawed. James Esseks, who directs the LGBT project of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the First Amendment’s protection of religious freedom “does not give any of us the right to harm others, and that’s what it sounds like the proposal from the Mormon church would do.” The poll found that 44 percent of Americans favor and 39 percent oppose legal same-sex marriage in their own states, while 15 percent expressed no opinion. But the country is evenly divided, 48 percent to 48 percent, on which way the Supreme Court should rule when it decides the issue for the entire nation this spring. Discuss…

Was Black Former CIA Officer Convicted Of Leaking Classified Intel To Reporter Angry Over Workplace Discrimination?

Prosecutor Claims Former Black CIA Officer Convicted Of Espionage Was Disgruntled Over Racial Discrimination Is this guy a black Edward Snowden , or is that too much of a stretch? One big difference in this case is that Sterling claims he did nothing wrong. According to NY Times reports : Jeffrey A. Sterling, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer, was convicted of espionage Monday on charges that he told a reporter for The New York Times about a secret operation to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program. The conviction is a significant victory for the Obama administration, which has conducted an unprecedented crackdown on officials who speak to journalists about security matters without the administration’s approval. Prosecutors prevailed after a yearslong fight in which the reporter, James Risen, refused to identify his sources. The case revolved around a C.I.A. operation in which a former Russian scientist provided Iran with intentionally flawed nuclear component schematics. Mr. Risen revealed the operation in his 2006 book, “State of War,” describing it as a mismanaged, potentially reckless mission that may have inadvertently aided the Iranian nuclear program. On the third day of deliberations, the jury in federal court in Alexandria, Va., convicted Mr. Sterling on nine felony counts. Mr. Sterling, who worked for the C.I.A. from 1993 to 2002 and now lives in O’Fallon, Mo., faces a maximum possible sentence of decades in prison, though the actual sentence is likely to be far shorter. Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of Federal District Court, who presided over the weeklong trial, allowed Mr. Sterling to remain free on bond and set sentencing for April 24. “This is a just and appropriate outcome,” Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said. “The defendant’s unauthorized disclosures of classified information compromised operations undertaken in defense of America’s national security. The disclosures placed lives at risk. And they constituted an egregious breach of the public trust by someone who had sworn to uphold it. As this verdict proves, it is possible to fully prosecute unauthorized disclosures that inflict harm upon our national security without interfering with journalists’ ability to do their jobs. While it might seem like this is a case where race wasn’t a factor, it turns out that it did play a role. The prosecution argued that Sterling was disgruntled over workplace discrimination. Liberal advocacy groups have hailed Mr. Sterling as a whistle-blower for taking his concerns about the program to the Senate Intelligence Committee in early 2003, a time when dissenting voices in the C.I.A. were hushed as the country prepared for war in Iraq. The Justice Department and C.I.A., however, deny that characterization. They said that the Iran operation had not been mismanaged and that Mr. Sterling had gone to Congress and then the news media as a way to settle personal grievances. The Justice Department had no direct proof that Mr. Sterling, who managed the Iranian operation, provided the information to Mr. Risen, but prosecutors stitched together a strong circumstantial case. They described Mr. Sterling, who is black, as bitter and frustrated about what he believed was workplace discrimination. Telephone records and emails showed that Mr. Sterling and Mr. Risen had talked frequently, and prosecutors argued that only Mr. Sterling had the information, the motive and the opportunity to leak it. We’re a little torn over this one because we’d hate to be tied up in court for not divulging the identities of our government sources — if we had any. But at the same time, if dude snitched, isn’t he risking public safety and national security? What do you think? Also, it’s worth noting that Sterling is the one of eight people the Obama administration has charged with discussing national security matters with reporters. Under all previous presidents combined, only three people had faced such prosecutions! APImages

Bye Ashy!!! Kenya Moore Denies Asking Lupita Nyong’o To Take A Pic With Her At The 2015 Golden Globes

Kenya Moore Denies Asking Lupita Nyong’o For Picture At Golden Globes But…. Via Inquisitr reports Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore is struggling to clear the air after an attempt to shade actress Lupita Nyong’o went horribly wrong. Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore is struggling to clear the air after an attempt to shade actress Lupita Nyong’o went horribly wrong. As recently reported by the Inquisitr, Kenya Moore was reportedly not happy when the Academy Award-winning starlet refused to take pictures. Kenya even took to her Twitter account to call Lupita out for her alleged behavior. When one of Moore’s followers asked her if she was shading Nyong’o, she had this to say about the encounter. In retrospect, there is nothing in those tweets that directly imply that it was Kenya Moore herself with whom Lupita Nyong’o refused to be photographed. Those initial tweets by Moore certainly seemed to imply to the public that she was personally snubbed. However, it is now painfully clear that if Kenya Moore was hoping to benefit from this alleged diss, her plan backfired to an embarrassing degree. Much of the backlash over this incident has hit Kenya herself. The consensus seemed to be that the actress had every right to not be photographed with Kenya. There were even those who cheered Lupita for refusing to have her picture taken with the offended reality tv starlet. Kenya seems to have realized that she is looking none too good because now her story has changed. Or rather, Moore is working to clarify why she was upset with Nyong’o. Unfortunately for Kenya Moore, this may be a “too little, too late” situation. Although reports of the social media comment are circulating, it seems to have done little to alleviate the backlash. Some are wondering why Kenya Moore waited until after all of the negative commentaries to attempt to make the public understand what actually happened with Lupita Nyong’o. First this: But now this: Wait… WHAT!?!? Twitter

Transgender Or Nah?? African Soccer Star Genoveva Anonma Was Made To Strip Bucket Nekkid To Prove She Isn’t A Man

Soccer Player Genoveva Anonma Was Made To Strip To Prove She’s A Man WTF ?!? Via The Grio reports: Last year Genoveva Anonma made headlines when she called for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to be cancelled to avoid spreading the Ebola virus to her home country. Now the former African women’s “Footballer of the Year” has opened up to the BBC about the embarrassing treatment she received from African football authorities when they asked her to strip down naked and prove she was a woman. In the audio she shares “I don’t know how they usually do it, but they kept accusing me. Because I’m quite energetic and very strong they say it was impossible that I could be a woman. I don’t know what I did to make them think I’m a man. They didn’t do any hospital tests. I was hoping they would call me to tell me they were taking me to a hospital to do tests – but they never did. I’ve never had a single apology” Do you think the soccer star is owed an apology for having to strip to prove her gender?? Getty

Fair Or Foul?? Keshia Knight Pulliam Fired From ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ For Not Asking Bill Cosby For A Big Donation

Keisha says she doesn’t have a relationship with Bill… Keisha Knight Pulliam Fired From Celebrity Apprentice For Not Calling Bill Cosby Via Vulture reports: Keshia Knight Pulliam — best known for her role as adorable little Rudy Huxtable on The Cosby Show — just made her debut as a contestant on reality-TV toxic-waste barge The Celebrity Apprentice…and hoo boy, did things get uncomfortable when Bill Cosby came up as a topic . The season premiere was filmed about a year ago, months before mounting rape allegations irrevocably ruined Cosby’s reputation. So when the cast found out they needed to contact rich friends in order to raise money for a bake sale, it’s understandable that Pulliam’s teammates leaned on her to call up her (as-of-then-relatively-untarnished) former TV dad. Pulliam (who was her team’s project manager) awkwardly declined, cryptically saying she opted instead to reach out to “people I felt can deliver the quickest.” Cosby went unmentioned for much of the rest of the episode. Then came the boardroom. The two teams were summoned to appear before Donald Trump and co-judges Ivanka Trump and Piers Morgan. Pulliam’s team had come up short in their fundraising, and her teammates took aim at her. What followed was an excruciating three minutes for anyone even vaguely aware of the Cosby rape scandal. The Trumps, Morgan, and Pulliam’s team took her to task for not calling Bill Cosby and asking him for money. “Did you call Bill?” the elder Trump asked her. “I did not,” Pulliam said, crying. “I have not talked to Bill Cosby on the phone in I don’t know how long. So for me to pick up the phone, having not talked to you for five years, except for when we run into each other for a Cosby event– I feel that’s not my place to do.” That defense wasn’t good enough for Trump, who went on to fire her, specifically because she refused to call Cosby. “I really believe, if you’d called that gentleman, he would’ve helped you, even if you hadn’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said, “because you were an amazing team with one of the most successful shows ever. So I think it would’ve been a very good call to make for charity. But you have to take responsibility. I think you agree with that.” What’s truly baffling here is why the show’s producers didn’t edit this stuff out, trim it down, or make some kind of statement about it beforehand. Sure, Cosby wasn’t a big topic a year ago, but he’s easily one of the most loathed celebrities in America right now. In light of everything we’ve heard in the past few months, it’s kind of insane to have an extended sequence where a female acquaintance of Bill Cosby’s gets fired from a job because she didn’t beg Bill Cosby to help her get ahead. Do you think Keisha should have called Bill??
