NBCU, Bring Back Promos Like This One From 1993

Now that Comcast (or Kabletown) has officially taken over NBC from General Electric, they have a big problem on their hands in the form of returning NBC to its past glory. The Movieline solution: Fun NBC -themed promos! Seriously, where have these been? Specifically, just recreate this “The Stars are Back on NBC ” promo featuring Michael Richards sliding down an animated staircase into the waiting arms of a signing Crystal Bernard from Wings . Also, Joey Lawrence says, “Whoa,” Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric make out, and John Larroquette picks a star out of his eyeball. Problem solved! And if it doesn’t work, just bring back Seinfeld .

Considering he’s been making movies for almost sixty years, you might find it a bit surprising that director/producer Roger Corman thinks this is the best time for indie filmmakers to express themselves creatively. Ahead, watch Movieline’s Alonso Duralde chat with Corman and director Alex Stapleton about her documentary Corman’s World , independent films, and which Sundance entry the legendary director loves on the title alone. (Hints: Hobo. Shotgun.)

Matthew McConaughey is Packing Heat in the Lincoln Lawyer Trailer

Despite the title, it turns out that Matthew McConaughey did not actually beat Steven Spielberg to the punch with a movie about honest Abe. The Lincoln Lawyer is actually about a sleazy Beverly Hills lawyer (McConaughey) who rides around in a Lincoln town car with a “NTGUILTY” vanity plate and apparently defends anyone from motorcycle gangs to Ryan Phillippe. But things get a bit more complicated for the Lincoln Lawyer once he meets Phillipe, who may or may not have killed his wife. So much so that he starts carrying a gun.

REVIEW: Brutal Gangster Murders Story in Mesrine: Killer Instinct

Luridly handsome and resolutely unsympathetic, as played by Vincent Cassel, the title character in the gangster’s greatest hits compilation Mesrine: Killer Instinct is a thug’s thug. It would seem he was so in life as well: A notorious criminal in his native France, Jacques Mesrine died with his leather jacket on (as seen in an ambush depicted in the movie’s opening scene) after a life of unrepentantly violent, sometimes brashly vigilantic misdeeds.
