Gary Coleman Dead at 42 Brain Hemorrhage

Gary Coleman, 42 , the diminutive, wisecracking child star of the sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes,” whose adult life collapsed into a tabloid calamity, died Friday at a Utah hospital from a brain hemorrhage.

Gary Coleman dead
His brother-in-law told the celebrity gossip site TMZ.com that Mr. Coleman had fallen and injured his head at the actor’s home in Santaquin, Utah.

Mr. Coleman was 10 when he stepped into the national spotlight in 1978, playing the witty, lovable Arnold Jackson on NBC’s “Diff’rent Strokes.” The role was written for him and made Mr. Coleman the best-known child star on television for the eight years the hit comedy was on the air.

He played one of two orphaned African American brothers adopted by a white Manhattan millionaire after their mother — the rich man’s maid — had died. The show became a comedic showcase for Mr. Coleman, who looked younger than his actual age because his growth had been stunted by a congenital kidney condition.

On the set, he proved to be a thorough professional who could memorize his dialogue in a single reading and deliver it with perfect timing. His signature line, directed toward his brother Willis, played by Todd Bridges, became a nationwide catch phrase: “What’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?

“The true star of the show is 10-year old Gary Coleman as 8-year-old Arnold,” The Washington Post’s Tom Shales wrote when the show premiered, calling Mr. Coleman “a most unusual tot with a strikingly professional comic delivery.”

Newsweek pronounced him “NBC’s Littlest Big Man” and “possibly the most original vid-kid since Howdy Doody.”

First lady Nancy Reagan appeared on “Diff’rent Strokes” in 1983 to make an anti-drug pitch, and Mr. Coleman had his own Saturday morning cartoon show. As a guest on “The Tonight Show,” Mr. Coleman managed to upstage Johnny Carson, who jokingly asked if he wanted to take over the rest of the show.

“With all the laughing and cheering out there,” he replied, “quite possibly.”

As Mr. Coleman’s salary rose from $1,500 to $70,000 an episode, his fragile health continued to deteriorate. He had undergone two kidney transplants by the time he was 14, and he received daily dialysis while taping “Diff’rent Strokes.”

When the show was canceled in 1986, he was 18, and both of his kidneys had failed. He had amassed a personal fortune estimated at $18 million, but his life quickly devolved into a sorry spectacle of lawsuits, countersuits, recriminations and hurt feelings.

He sued his parents and advisers for stealing money from trust funds meant to support him as he grew older. In court, his parents charged that Mr. Coleman had been brainwashed by a manager and was not competent to take care of his affairs. In the end, Mr. Coleman won a $1.28 settlement, but his relationship with his parents was all but fractured.

At 4-feet-8 and now an adult, Mr. Coleman was becoming increasingly embittered and unemployable. He found occasional work in film and TV, but mostly he watched his money slip through his hands. At one point, his father said, Mr. Coleman tried to run him over with a car.

“Gary Coleman’s rage,” as a Los Angeles Times article bluntly put it, “is the direct result of being pampered, badgered and obliged to keep on being a cute freak for hire.”

By the late 1990s, his life was crashing in a sad, gossip-fueled tailspin. One of his fellow child stars on “Diff’rent Strokes,” Dana Plato, died of a drug overdose. Bridges was arrested for drug violations and for shooting a man.

Mr. Coleman had sold off many of his possessions and was working as a security guard at a Los Angeles mall in 1999 when a woman recognized him and asked for an autograph. They got into an argument, exchanged blows and ended up in court, where a tearful Mr. Coleman pleaded no contest to battery.

Describing his encounter with the 200-pound woman, he reportedly said, “I’m 4-foot, 8-inches, 86 pounds of nothing.”

Gary Wayne Coleman was born Feb. 8, 1968, in Zion, Ill., and was adopted as an infant. His kidney disease was diagnosed early on, and he had his first transplant at 5.

He began modeling for a local store at 7 and began to appear in TV commercials. A talent scout recommended him to producer Norman Lear, who cast him in episodes of “Good Times” and “The Jeffersons.” Recognizing Mr. Coleman’s appeal, Lear and his production team designed “Diff’rent Strokes” around him.

In later years, Mr. Coleman felt trapped by his early fame and yearned to find a dramatic role to play as an adult. He appeared on a celebrity dating show, worked as a corporate pitchman and wrote an online advice column. In 2003, while making a half-serious run for California governor, he admitted that he was still a virgin. He became such a source of tabloid fodder that he was parodied in the Tony Award-winning musical “Avenue Q.”

In August 2007, he secretly married 22-year-old Shannon Price and settled in Utah. Nine months later, they appeared on the TV show “Divorce Court” apparently trying to work out a public reconciliation. Mr. Coleman and his wife were arrested several times for disorderly conduct after arguments and, in January 2010, he was jailed overnight for domestic violence.

Besides his wife, survivors include his parents, W.G. Coleman and Edmonia Sue Coleman of Zion.

“Family never meant anything to me,” Mr. Coleman said in 2003, “but a whole lot of trouble that I don’t need.”

‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’: Behind The Song

Rock ballad Bret Michaels performed on ‘American Idol’ was heavy-metal band Poison’s first–and only–#1 hit. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX Bret Michaels surprised millions of viewers, turning up on the season-nine finale of “American Idol” to perform “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The guest spot was Michaels’ first major musical appearance since suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage last month, followed by a series of health-related setbacks. So what’s the story behind that song? To some, it’s a tune made familiar by star Miley Cyrus , who recently covered it. But for Michaels (and Poison fans), the song’s history runs much deeper. In an episode to devoted to him on VH1’s “Behind the Music” , Michaels revealed that he wrote “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” as a way to cope in the aftermath of his breakup from then-girlfriend Tracy Lewis. According to the Poison frontman, the song’s titular rose represented his blossoming music career, while the thorn was a metaphor for how success had cost him the relationship with Lewis. Though forged from heartbreak, “Every Rose” ultimately rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for three weeks, from December 1988 to January 1989. It was Poison’s first, and only, #1 hit. “Every Rose” became not only a commercial success, but also found a place within popular culture. The track played a memorable role in 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” with the flick’s rock-obsessed idiots reciting lyrics from the song in order to gain entry to Heaven. And Michaels collaborated with Cyrus for her remake of the Poison tune, which landed on her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed.” Of course, the song surfaced again during Wednesday night’s “American Idol.” Singing the track opposite third-place finisher Casey James, Michaels provided his supporters with a powerful message: Just as “every rose has its thorn, and every night has its dawn,” Michaels’ troubles are coupled — and exceeded — by his triumphs. ‘The Hills’ Recap: Can Kristin And Brody Work As Friends With Benefits?

Plus, a sober Stephanie Pratt reenters the dating world. By Amy Wilkinson Looking good in a crop top, sometimes just isn’t enough to save a faltering friends-with-benefits relationship. Brody Jenner learned that lesson the hard way on Tuesday night’s episode of “The Hills,” as his budding romance with a new girl got in the way of his relationship with ex Kristin Cavallari. When Brody and Kristin decided to hook up last week, they were both clear that they loved the single life and that their relationship would just be casual — a fact Brody reiterated by announcing that he was going on a date with another girl. “I’m not looking for a relationship,” Brody reminded a plainly peeved Kristin. “I’m enjoying being single.” Meanwhile, the very un-single Audrina was trying to convince boyfriend Ryan Cabrera to go out with her and her dramatic friends — a crowd Ryan has gone to great lengths to avoid. “I’ll be waiting at home in my candy thong reading ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ ” he said, though he did end up being a good sport and going. After facing the stress of her DUI and distancing herself from brother Spencer, Stephanie told Lo that she felt like she was in a good place to start dating someone. And wouldn’t you know it, Lo had just the guy for her: her boyfriend Scott’s friend Max. Getting slightly ahead of herself, Stephanie wondered aloud how her potential date would react to her being 23 and sober. Lo told her not to worry. But Lo wasn’t the only girl dishing out relationship advice. Audrina met up for a chill evening at Kristin’s house, where they problem talked about Brody and Kristin’s little arrangement. “We’re having a good time,” Kristin explained. She then tried to dial up Brody on his cell, but the call went directly to voicemail, because Brody was on a date with new girl McKaela. “I have a no-phone-at-the-table rule,” McKaela informed him, prompting Brody to ignore the call. Brody rubbed his new flirtation in Kristin’s face even more by bringing McKaela out to meet the gang. “Kristin is going to flip out when she comes,” Audrina told Brody. Though Kristin didn’t necessarily “flip out,” she was visibly hurt by the slight — and the large amount of PDA going on between Brody and his date. After complaining to Kristin about how she was being unkind to his date, Brody and McKaela finally left the gathering for a little alone time. And then it was Stephanie’s turn to pursue new romantic possibilities. Stephanie went on a seemingly successful double date with new guy Max, with Lo and Scott in tow. At the end of the night, Max offered his jacket, and Stephanie offered her number. Kristin finally decided she needed to speak with Brody about what had happened a few nights before and went over to his condo for a chat, which quickly escalated into a heated argument. “You were being really rude being all over McKaela in front of me like that,” Kristin started. Brody replied that it was Kristin who had been rude by not paying attention to McKaela. By the time Brody finally admitted he liked both girls and was just having fun, Kristin had had enough. “I’m not going to wait around while you figure out what you want to do. It’s not fair,” she said. And with that, she stormed out of Brody’s condo. Do you think Brody and Kristin should get back together for real, or continue their casual relationship? Drake Says He Could Never ‘Hold It Down’ For Lil Wayne

‘I can never hold down Young Money because I’m not Lil Wayne,’ Drake tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Drake From a Jamaican Gully Town to Jamaica, Queens, Young Money’s Drake and Lil Wayne have the mixtape circuit in a tizzy right now. Drake’s Wayne-featured “Miss Me” — which we told you about months ago — is a must-have for mixtape DJs right now. It may be the biggest new song to hit the circuit in weeks. Despite all the anticipation Drizzy has for his upcoming Thank Me Later LP (due June 15), the 23 year-old Canadian knows that he is not in any way filling Wayne’s shoes. Drake will correct you if you say he’s “holding it down” for Weezy during the New Orleans fireman’s time in jail . “You know what, man? I rap and I rap very confident. But in my actually head, I can never hold down Young Money because I’m not Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne is who we look up to. He’s our mentor. I will definitely do everything to keep the brand going, keep Young Money on people’s minds. But Lil Wayne is the only one — he’s the epicenter of that all. I definitely don’t wanna take on that responsibility. I just wanna put out this album, give the people this great music and have the people understand it’s coming from Young Money. If you do enjoy it, then please, give all the credit to Young Money because that’s who I represent. But as far as me being able to ‘hold it down,’ that’s not even a conversation. Lil Wayne is Lil Wayne. He’s my hero, my mentor and he’s the reason I’m here. I do it in honor of him as opposed to filling the void.” “Miss Me” has appeared on the mixtape circuit in a variety of forms. First it was just a Drake verse and an alternate chorus, then it was the Drake verse, alternate chorus and a snippet of Wayne’s verse. Finally, the mastered and complete version landed on the Internet and mixtapes this week. “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” Drake told us when his Away From Home Tour kicked off several weeks ago. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” Drake also talks about marrying Nicki Minaj on the track, while Weezy bounces off the walls on a myriad of subjects. T.I. Says Eminem Reached Out To Him In Prison

Tip says Em gave him ‘incredibly helpful’ words of support during tough times. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Tim Kash T.I. Photo: Sam Hendrick When T.I. first ventured out to get an Eminem verse on “Touchdown” for 2007’s T.I. vs. T.I.P., the King of the South thought the best-case scenario would be that he’d get 16 bars of fire and a hit record. The ATL native gained much more than that while working with Marshall Mathers: a friendship. “I reached out to Em,” Tip explained to MTV News. “My management reached out to his management, just in hopes of getting him on a record. Em personally reached out to me, and we been speaking ever since, especially since I went through my situation [with having to go to prison]. [He would] just kinda remind me that ‘I’ve been through dark period in my life too. You’re gonna make it. You’re one of the ones we need, so you’re gonna make it. Stand tall and walk the walk.’ He just made it a point to always reassure me of the spot that I hold in this thing that we got called hip-hop. It was incredibly helpful. It was incredibly noble of him, in my eyes, to even take the time out to reach out to me.” Tip says while he being prosecuted and sentenced for illegally attempting to purchase firearms , Eminem would call him once every two weeks. “We continue to stay in touch,” Tip said. “He wrote me since I was in the joint. We’ve spoken several time since I’ve been back home. We maintain a healthy relationship.” Just like Tip has overcome severe circumstances with his conviction, Eminem overcame a drug addiction that almost resulted in a fatal overdose. “Adversity brings strength,” T.I. said. “No matter where the adversity comes from, you become a better person if you are able to channel that strength in a positive way. If you are able to take that experience and learn from it, and you’re willing to grow from it, accept the part you’ve played in it and move forward, I think you’re a better person. That’s something that I can see he’s experienced that I’ve experienced, that we both share in common.” T.I. and Eminem have agreed to record a song for Tip’s August 17 LP King Uncaged. Stone Temple Pilots Traded Control For Democracy On New Album

‘We needed to learn how to be in a band again,’ Scott Weiland says of recording process. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News After nearly a decade out in the wilderness — a time spent releasing solo albums, forming new bands and getting arrested once or twice — the Stone Temple Pilots return to their musical home on Tuesday (May 25) with their self-titled sixth album. The roiling, rumbling, hard-rocking release recalls the band’s late-’90s glory years, while also forging a new sonic territory, one that’s awfully indebted to Let It Bleed -era Rolling Stones. Yes, it’s a brand-new era for STP. It kicked off on a high note with a well-received run of shows earlier this year and continues today with a single, “Between the Lines,” that’s burning up the Modern Rock Radio charts. But, to hear the band tell it, this new era almost didn’t happen. There was a time not too long ago when Stone Temple Pilots seemed like they were done forever. “We produced this album ourselves, but we had some help from Don Was,” frontman Scott Weiland told MTV News. “It came at a point where we were sort of stuck, and he was great. … He got us all together and had us play the songs live. And that was important. We had been doing our own thing for so long, we needed to learn how to be in a band again. “Making a solo album is kind of easy,” Weiland continued. “Being in a democracy is difficult, because everyone has their own ideas, and you have to be able to respect those ideas. So making a solo album, or these guys doing what they’ve done on the outside, it’s like, you get a lot more control; you do what you want to do. And sometimes those things need to be done in order for a band to get back together and appreciate what it’s all about.” And that joy of reconnecting is readily apparent on the band’s sixth album. There’s a sense of the band rediscovering their old magic (like on “Between the Lines”), while also trusting one another enough to push the boundaries (the bluesy stomp of tracks like “Huckleberry Crumble” or “Hickory Dichotomy,” the Country leanings of album closer “Maver”). The delicate balance that required STP to embrace their past — warts and all — and look boldly forward too. There were some stumbles, but once they found their footing, everything else simply fell into place. “We’ve all been trying to get away from the guy in the mirror for quite some time now … but when it comes down to it, we’re all kind of the same,” guitarist Dean DeLeo said. “I was just laughing about this with a friend of mine, and I was like, ‘You know, we all still laugh at the same old things, and still kind of dig the same sorts of fashion and music.’ And it’s like, ‘Are we going to be 70-year-old guys still laughing at the same old things, and driving down the same old streets and going to the same old bars?’ I don’t know. I suppose we’re creatures of habit in that respect, but I’m pretty comfortable doing it.” “I think the older that we’ve gotten, we’ve kind of gone back more to our roots, the Beatles and Stones and Zeppelin … but there’s still that urgency to step outside your comfort zone and write a song like ‘Maver,’ ” Weiland added. “That’s why we’ve had such a long career; we never ape ourselves. We don’t want to steal from ourselves. I think that everything we’ve done in between has added to what we are right now.” Which era of Stone Temple Pilots is your favorite?
