‘The Empire Strikes Back’ Gets Star-Studded 30th Birthday Party

Harrison Ford, Mark Hoppus, Ewan McGregor and others celebrate the ‘Star Wars’ sequel. By Adam Rosenberg, with reporting by Todd Gilchrist Harrison Ford Photo: MTV News A long time ago, in the galaxy that we still live in, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas rocked Hollywood to its foundations when he achieved the unthinkable: “The Empire Strikes Back” became the rare sequel to surpass its predecessor, “Star Wars,” in terms of quality. Friday (May 21) marks the 30th anniversary of the release of “Empire” (which now carries “Star Wars: Episode V” in its title), and famous fans descended on L.A.’s ArcLight Theater for a special screening followed by a Q&A with Han Solo himself, star Harrison Ford. As “Star Wars” heroes and other celebrities walked the event’s red carpet, they spoke to MTV News about the enduring legacy of Lucas’ classic sci-fi series. “[Lucas] introduced us to that world with the first movie, and then when it came time for us to see ‘Empire,’ we were so … invested in that world that it worked,” said Ewan McGregor, who starred as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the more recent Prequel Trilogy. Ford echoed McGregor’s comments, noting how audience familiarity helped bolster the sequel’s reception. “We were able to … deepen the relationships between the characters and make a film that was probably more emotional,” he said. Without the need to explain the universe, a cast of colorful characters became the movie’s sole focus. “It has a really amazing second-act feel to it,” said Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus. “It’s really dark. It’s moody. It’s not just an action-adventure; there are all these different elements that come into it. … It’s a really great movie.” Even MTV vet Paul Scheer, co-creator of “Human Giant,” was there to share his excitement about the series and “Empire” in particular … in his typically entertaining way, of course. ” ‘Empire’ … one of the best sequels of all time, right?” he said, going into fanboy enthusiasm. “The original cast? All kick ass. Mark Hamill gets hit in the face by a wampa, right? Then they sleep in taun-tauns, people getting their hands cut off, Yoda’s out there talking some crazy stuff — we never met Yoda before. It’s awesome. Light, dark, it ends on a great cliffhanger. Amazing.” Which “Star Wars” movie is your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Drake Brings Out Special Guests At Dallas Away From Home Tour Stop

Baby and Lil Twist join their Young Money/ Cash Money comrade; Drizzy drops a Dallas freestyle. By Sarah Bryant Drake performs in Dallas on Wednesday Photo: Sarah Bryant DALLAS — Drake ‘s Away From Home Tour landed at the Palladium on Wednesday night, and the Young Money MC sounded just like the records you bang in your car — no Auto-Tune necessary. The Toronto native kicked off the show with songs from his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, and then gave fans a taste of what’s to come on his June 15 debut, Thank Me Later, with “Fireworks,” which will feature Alicia Keys on the album. Drake temporarily diverted the love and attention from himself to his big brother, Lil Wayne. “It’s Young Money all day. Free Weezy,” Drake said between songs. “When I say Young Money, you say Free Weezy.” Birdman then made a special appearance during “4 My Town (Play Ball),” and the crowd got even crazier when the DJ dropped the beat for “Money to Blow.” “We certified getting it CM, YM, Cash Money business,” Baby rapped. Lil Twist also joined Drake onstage during “Bedrock.” The biggest spectacle was made by a fan, not a guest MC. Christina McAlister from Fort Worth, Texas, was picked from the audience to participate in the show. She landed not just a dance with Drake, but a kiss on the lips. The ladies “ooohed” with excitement as Christina tried to keep her cool. Shortly after, Drake pulled out his mic stand covered with bras, and his collection began to rack up, as women threw their bras to the stage. “I’ll make sure to add these to my treasure chest,” he chuckled. Though his newest single, “Find Your Love,” was conspicuously absent, he had to perform his breakthrough track, “Best I Ever Had.” Drake’s fans knew this show couldn’t be missed, because getting tickets wasn’t easy. In Dallas, tickets sold out within the first 24 hours. Devin Smith, a 23-year old senior from the University of North Texas, had to wait until tickets were re-released in mid-April to score his. “Just seeing Drake was on a different level!” Smith exclaimed. He and his friend arrived at the Palladium at 11:30 a.m. for the 8 p.m. performance so they could get the best seats in the house. They camped out in front, studied for summer classes and chatted with their newfound, like-minded friends. “It was worth the wait sitting there. … He put on a great concert,” Smith said. “He had great energy, and it was everything I thought it would be. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.” Drake must have really loved his time in the D. On Thursday morning (May 20), he released “9 AM in Dallas Freestyle.” “Weezy, I’m just out here reppin’ us,” he raps. “Till I get to shake the hand of the man that’s blessing us/ I know these n—as miss the mean lyrics/ Kush got the room smelling like Teen Spirit/ … Money gets all of my love and affection/ Cars all black like the cover of Essence / I’m allergic to coming in second/ But I never sneeze/ YMO-ney, n—a.” Have you checked out Drake’s Away From Home Tour? Lee DeWyze’s Hometown Ecstatic About His ‘American Idol’ Finale Bid

‘I had no doubt Lee would make it to the finale!’ says DeWyze’s former high school teacher Amy Silverman. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Just about anywhere you went in Lee DeWyze’s hometown of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, last week, his fans, friends and supporters weren’t shy about telling you that their guy was going to make it to next week’s “American Idol” finale, and that he’ll probably even win. Well, on Thursday (May 20) morning, they were feeling pretty pumped up now that half of that prophecy has come true. “I had no doubt Lee would make it to the finale!” crowed his good friend and former high school teacher Amy Silverman. “Although we all know anything can happen, Lee not making it to the finale would have been comparable to Chicago being hit by a tsunami! Really, he is the best! And the fact that millions of people … young and old, male and female, love him and his music so much proves that he deserves to be on the big stage next week!” Silverman, who met Lee not long after the once-rebellious teen had just taken up guitar, said she could only imagine the hooting and hollering going on in houses, restaurant and bars in the area when host Ryan Seacrest announced that Lee would be facing off against Crystal Bowersox in next Tuesday night’s final sing-off for the crown. “I know where I was [the Fox and Hound in Arlington Heights ]. The whole building was shaking from the energy of people screaming, yelling, whistling, clapping, and of course, there were tears of joy!” she said. “As far as next week goes, Lee has got it! Although, I think Crystal is very talented too, Lee has the versatility and reaches a much wider range of fans.” Dr. Patricia Tedaldi-Monti, dean of students at Prospect High School , which Lee attended from ninth grade until partway through senior year, could hardly contain her excitement either. “It gives you chills to see him,” she said of the former student who promised her that he’d be a rock star someday before he left her school. “I feel great about any former student who succeeds, but his story … he’s worked so hard and done unbelievable.” Tedaldi-Monti, who also feels confident Lee is going to win, said she doesn’t think the 24-year-old singer has peaked yet and that his best performances are yet to come. Even though he’s been watching Lee perform all around the Chicagoland area for more than six years, friend Brian Friedopfer was still shocked at Wednesday night’s results show. “Going into it, we were pretty confident and felt good about it. But as soon as they made it official, we just jumped out of our seats,” he said Thursday morning. “Once I sat down after the initial excitement, I had one of those moments like Lee did when he came home, and I said,’ Holy crap!’ ” Friedopfer was confident his friend could win from the moment DeWyze tried out for “Idol” almost a year ago, but the reality didn’t really sink in until well after the news was delivered by Seacrest. “I was sitting there real quiet and my friends asked, ‘Are you okay?’ ” he recalled. ” ‘Yeah, I’m just trying to take it in,’ I said. It hit me, like, ‘Holy sh–! He can really win this!’ It was a humbling moment.” Like Tedaldi-Monti, Friedopfer said he thinks DeWyze hasn’t hit his peak yet and might still have some surprises in store. “I’ve seen him goofing off around us and he’s belted out some crazy stuff,” he said. “He hasn’t done that yet. He’s been pretty tame out there. So watch out, America!” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos Lee DeWyze: From Illinois Boy To ‘American Idol’ Star ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances

Jay-Z Breaks Bread With Billionaires Mayor Bloomberg And Nets Owner

‘I share his passion for Brooklyn,’ Mikhail Prokhorov says of NBA partner Hov at Gracie Mansion, according to the New York Post. By Mawuse Ziegbe New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jay-Z share breakfast Photo: Chris Hondros/Getty Images Jay-Z is known for doing things big, but nothing says baller status like sharing breakfast with two billionaires, which is just what the Jiggaman did Wednesday morning in New York. The MC and minority owner of the New Jersey Nets noshed on bagels with media mogul/ major of New York City Michael Bloomberg and the new majority Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, at Gracie Mansion (traditionally the mayor’s official residence though Bloomberg doesn’t live there). Prokhorov spent the rest of the day on a tour of the city, which included a stop in Jay-Z’s native Brooklyn, where the Nets plan to move in two years. While the European tycoon has made his multibillion dollar fortune in the banking and mining industries, Prokhorov clearly has his ear to the streets and revealed his respect for Jigga. According to the New York Daily News, Prokhorov gushed about his fellow Nets owner: “We are soul mates.” And there may be more power breakfasts in store for Hov and Prokhorov as the billionaire added, “I’m looking forward to hanging out with him.” While Prokhorov was aware that he and Jay-Z make something of an odd pairing, he insisted the connection between the two moguls is deeper than rap. “Despite the fact that I am very far from the rap music, we have a lot in common,” Prokhorov said, according to the New York Post. Plus, the two power brokers do have one important thing in common: “I share his passion for Brooklyn,” Prokhorov said. Are you surprised to hear Jay-Z is breaking bread with billionaires? Katy Perry’s Evolution: Teen Church Singer To Teenage Dream

The 2010 MTV Movie Awards performer has come a long way since her Nashville days. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Katy Perry’s journey to the top of the pop world actually began in a far different place: Nashville, Tennessee. The daughter of pastors, she spent her early years singing in churches, then went to Music City as a fresh-faced 15-year-old looking to score a record deal. In the years that followed, it’s been a pretty amazing ride, one that doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. On August 24, she’ll release the follow-up to One of the Boys, Teenage Dream, and she’s already got a brand-new single — the beach-ready “California Gurls” — that’s burning its way up the charts. She’s also just been confirmed as a performer at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . It’s looking like 2010 is going to be a very big year for Perry. So, before things get too hectic, we figured now would be a good time to take a look back at just how far Perry’s come. In her own words, here’s how she evolved from gospel-singing teen to chart-dominating, girl-kissing pop sensation. From California to Nashville (And Back Again) Born in Santa Barbara, California, Perry headed to Nashville in early 2000 with dreams of landing a recording contract. “When I was 14 or 15, I started going to Nashville, Tennessee, to start recording gospel songs and be around amazing country music veterans and learn how to craft a song and play guitar,” Perry said. “I have definitely grown up and changed a lot.” After failing to make an impact in Nashville, she changed her last name from Hudson to Perry, moved back to her native California and teamed up with famed producer Glen Ballard, eventually scoring a deal with Island Records. Perry got to work recording an album that, as it turned out, would never see the light of day. But the fire had clearly been lit. For the next seven years, she’d grind it out, bouncing between labels and writing partners, making cameos in music videos and, finally, hitting it big in 2008 with “I Kissed a Girl,” the first official single from her One of the Boys album. And the rest, as they say, was history. “I came from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. With a wonderful producer named Glen Ballard, who brought me out here and kinda looked out for me for three years,” she explained. “After being signed and dropped, signed and dropped, signed and dropped by a couple different record labels whose names I will withhold, Capital Records picked me up.” Kissing a Girl (And Liking It) As she said, Perry spent most of the mid-2000s bouncing between labels and teaming with a host of top-notch songwriters. In 2007, she finally found a home at Capitol Records and began working with the team of Dr. Luke and Max Martin, who helped her craft what would become her breakout hit: “I Kissed a Girl,” a tune that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven straight weeks and, in the process, turned Perry into a bona fide pop sensation. Other singles followed, and they were hits too, but Perry wasn’t content to rest on her laurels. Instead, she began looking toward the next phase of her career … not surprising for a girl who had worked so hard to get to this point. “For me in this past year and a half, I think some people have an idea of who I am or a little piece of the cake, but I get to show off,” she said. “I am really excited to be ever evolving and changing with my look, my music. It keeps me entertained as well. The next record will be very pop.” A California Gurl With Teenage Dreams Perry spent a good chunk of 2009 working on the follow-up to One of the Boys, teaming up once again with Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Teenage Dream is inspired by Ace of Base and roller-skating jams, Perry said, and the first single is a triumphant slice of summertime pop called “California Gurls,” an ode to her past and her future. “It’s so exciting [the album] is coming out this summer. It’s a summer record. It’s what I said I wanted earlier. I finally got it. We nailed it,” Perry beamed. “There might be some really cool guest’s appearance. Some rappers from the West Coast, since I am a California girl, you know.” So, with an almost certain second smash on her hands — not to mention a very high-profile wedding to comedian Russell Brand looming on the horizon — where does Perry go from here? Even she’s not sure just yet. But she knows that whatever she does, it’ll be big. “I feel like bit of a volcano,” she said. “I’m ready to explode with all of these new songs. I have a different perspective, and I changed a lot.” What would you say is the highlight of Katy Perry’s career so far? Share your thoughts in the comments. Bret Michaels Tells Oprah ‘I’m Just Very Thankful To Be Here’

‘The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family,’ he says in his first TV interview since brain hemorrhage. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Wednesday Photo: Harpo In his first television interview since suffering a serious subarachnoid hemorrhage , Bret Michaels appeared live via satellite on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday (May 19) to discuss his medical emergency and subsequent recovery. “My life didn’t flash before my eyes,” Michaels told Oprah about his experience. “It wasn’t like, all of a sudden, a rerun of my life. What happened was, I got very sad. I went into completely just asking God, ‘You have to let me through this.’ ” Michaels said that while he prayed to God, he didn’t necessarily hear back. “I was doing a lot of asking at that point,” he explained with a laugh. “I know I’ve done a lot of rotten things, but I’m asking for a break here. If you could cut me a break just this time, I promise I’ll be better in the future.” In a video segment, Dr. Joseph Zabramski said that Michaels’ condition was very serious when he first arrived to the hospital. “I tried explaining to him what we would be doing, and he was really unable to stay awake,” he said. “It’s really quite a miracle that he’s done so well.” Zabramski said it’s still unclear exactly what caused the hemorrhage, but added: “The chance for re-bleeding is really no higher than anyone else in his age group. I think this is more common than people realize.” During his struggle, Michaels said his thoughts were affixed on “what matters most,” including his kids, family, best friends and loved ones. His career was not on his mind. “The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family, my kids, and I thank God I’m still around to talk about it,” he said. A photo revealed that Michaels was still wearing his trademark bandanna throughout his ordeal. “It’s like Superman without the cape,” he laughed when asked why he continued to wear it. “If I’m going to go out, I want to go out rockin’!” Michaels’ family and friends appeared in pre-recorded video messages to discuss their fears and wish the Poison rock star well. “I just want to say hurry up and get your bum back to L.A., because your sugar mama needs you,” said Sharon Osbourne, Michaels’ co-star on “The Celebrity Apprentice.” “I want to give you a great big hug, and I want to see those gorgeous blue eyes of yours.” “The scariest part was thinking that my dad could die tonight,” Michaels’ daughter Raine recalled. “All these memories went flashing through my head of him. My first time on stage with him, my first time singing in the mic with him, my first time playing basketball. To think my dad wouldn’t be growing up with me or walking me down the aisle for my wedding was really heartbreaking.” Michaels teared up after both segments: “I’ll tell you, I said I wasn’t going to cry. That got me. I got the lump in my throat.” Michaels revealed that he’s asked his doctors to increase his rehab sessions to twice a day. Currently, he’s having trouble moving in his lower extremities, his neck is very stiff, and he continues to have headaches, though those are getting better with each passing day. “I don’t know what the reason is just yet,” he told Oprah of why he got a second chance at life. “Whatever or whomever blessed me, whatever guardian angel I had when I think of all the crazy, crazy things I’ve done in my life, I’m just very thankful to be here.” What did you think of Bret’s interview with Oprah? Daniel Radcliffe’s PSA For LBGT Help Line Debuts

‘If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,’ he says in the Trevor Project PSA. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, MTV News was on hand as “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe recorded a public-service announcement for the Trevor Project , a nonprofit organization focused on crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. “It’s something I’ve always been quite passionate about,” the British actor explained to us after the shoot. “Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to. … And now I am in a position where I can help an amazing thing like the Trevor Project.” Radcliffe’s charitable effort has now debuted online. “If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,” he says in the PSA. Anyone can call the organization’s number — (866) 4-U-TREVOR — for free and confidential support. “You can talk to someone 24 hours a day,” the actor says. “There are about 160 people in total who work around the clock, and that number is obviously growing over time. It is an incredible thing,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I was talking to one of the [volunteers], who said, ‘I hate the fact that this needs to exist.’ But it’s so important that it does.” Founded by the filmmakers of an Oscar-winning short film called “Trevor,” the Trevor Project is the leading national organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. The group’s prevention hotline and trained counselors have helped save lives and sought to foster safe, inclusive environments for at-risk youth at homes and schools. Their message — and Radcliffe’s — is a simple and powerful one. As the actor says in the PSA: “Be proud of who you are.” What do you think about Radcliffe’s PSA? Share your thoughts in the comments. Gucci Mane Says Warm Post-Prison Reception ‘Strengthens’ Him

‘I feel like I got a whole new beginning,’ the rapper tells Atlanta DJ Frank Ski morning after his release. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane Photo: Warner Bros. The “Welcome Home Gucci Mane” campaign is in full swing. On Wednesday night, Gucci’s good friends Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday were waiting at the Fulton County Jail to greet him upon his release. On Wednesday night, a host of other Gucci supporters gathered at the Georgian Terrace hotel in Atlanta for a dinner honoring the ATL street heavyweight. Monica, the Diplomats’ Chubbie Baby, Big Boi, Wale, Kandi Burruss, Jazze Pha, DJ Drama and L.A.D., Sean Garrett, Waka Flocka Flame and, of course, Lo and Holiday all came out to show love. Gucci LaFlare was a guest on the DJ Frank Ski V103 morning show on Thursday (May 13), where he reflected on the previous night’s festivities. “It makes me feel good. It strengthens me even more,” the Atlanta rapper said. While on-air, Gucci also revealed that his next album, The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal, is due out at the end of August. He told listeners that he would want to work with Andre 3000 and Jamie Foxx on this follow-up to his December ’09 project. When asked how jarring it was for him to go to prison last year, right before the release of The State vs. Radric Davis — an album that had the potential to be his superstar-making effort — Gucci said knowing some months earlier that he was going in made it somewhat easier. “It was little behind the scenes things that everybody didn’t know,” Gucci explained to Ski. “They had a warrant for my arrest about four or five months before I even went in. So I was already dealing with it. I was trying to do all I could in case I did go to jail, so I could keep it going. “I feel like I got a whole new beginning, like my career just started again,” he added. ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Eliminates Comedian Niecy Nash

‘Reno 911!’ star says she’s proud of her performance, even though she can’t ‘hula-hoop with a Cheerio.’ By Kelley L. Carter Niecy Nash on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC Considering that her low scores throughout the competition, it wasn’t too much of a surprise that funnywoman Niecy Nash was eliminated from “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night. She was joined in the bottom two by Cincinnati Bengals football star Chad Ochocinco and his partner, Cheryl Burke. Nash and her partner, Louis Van Amstel, were the lowest scorers Monday night. Their Viennese waltz failed to resonate with judges, who said there were too many odd transitions. Still, Len Goodman said Monday night that he was pleasantly surprised and thought the dance had a “lovely floaty” quality about it. Their next dance was a ’90s-themed paso doble. Judge Bruno Tonioli said that Nash was a “scary mama” and liked that she threw herself into it, but he wasn’t sure if it would end in disaster at various points in the routine. After learning that she was being eliminated, the “Reno 911!” star said that she was happy she’d made it that far. “I do feel like a redeemed myself. I am a 40-year-old mother of three, I’ve got three C-sections under my belly,” Nash laughed. “I was able to survive in this competition this long. I can not hula-hoop with a Cheerio, but I’ve been able to be one of the last women standing in this competition. I’ve had a fantastic time being able to live out my dream. I’m a happy girl.” She also thanked Van Amstel for “molding this lump of clay into something.” Now, there are four celebrities left, and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger is considered to be the front-runner to win the 10th season finale. Others moving on to compete next week include ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, Olympic skater Evan Lysacek and Ochocinco. Were you sad to see Niecy Nash eliminated from “Dancing With the Stars”?
