Via ShriverReport I am honored to participate in a project that is trying to help single mothers who are struggling to make a living and raise their kids, because that perfectly describes my mother when I was growing up. You think LeBron James is a champion? Gloria James is a champion too. She’s my champion. My mother really struggled. She had me, her only child, when she was just 16 years old. She was on her own, so we lived in her mom’s great big house in Akron, Ohio. But on Christmas Day when I was 3 years old, my grandmother suddenly died of a heart attack, and everything changed. With my mom being so young and lacking any support and the skills and education necessary to get ahead, it was really hard for us. We lost the house. We moved around from place to place—a dozen times in three years. It was scary. It was catch as catch can, scraping to get by. My mom worked anywhere and everywhere, trying to make ends meet. But through all of that, I knew one thing for sure: I had my mother to blanket me and to give me security. She was my mother, my father, my everything. She put me first. I knew that no matter what happened, nothing and nobody was more important to her than I was. I went without a lot of things, but never for one second did I feel unimportant or unloved. Finally, when I was 9 years old, my mother made a supreme sacrifice. She decided that while she was figuring out how to get on her feet, I needed some stability in my life. I needed to stay in one place and experience the support and security that she had felt growing up in a big family. So she sent me to live with my pee-wee football team coach, “Big Frankie” Walker, and his family. She later said to me, “It was hard, but I knew it was not about me. It was about you. I had to put you first.” I stayed with the Walkers for a year, and what a gift that was! I was in the same school all year, slept in the same bed all year, played on the same football team all year, and Big Frankie put me on my first basketball team. I saw my mom every weekend. In a time when bad mothers and ain’t isht daddies are runnin’ rampant, it’s good to read stories of single parents who bust their azz and make tough sacrifices for the the betterment of their children. Skin Tone Memory Bias Study: Educated Black Men Perceived Whiter Skin tone memory bias study shows an educated black man is thought to be lighter and perceived as “whiter”… According to International Business Times: Evidence of underlying cultural beliefs about race and intelligence has been uncovered by researchers, who found successful black men are often remembered as “whiter” than they actually are. Published in the open access journal Sage Open, researchers found that cultural beliefs about race and intelligence are still rife, with authors saying their study has “grave implications” for current racial attitudes. Lead researcher Avi Ben-Zeev, from San Francisco State University, said: “When a black stereotypic expectancy is violated – herein, encountering an educated Black male – this culturally incompatible information is resolved by distorting this person’s skin tone to be lighter in memory and therefore to be perceived as ‘whiter’.” The authors called the phenomenon, where black men associated with being intelligent are remembered as having lighter skin, “skin tone memory bias”. They conducted a two part experiment with 160 university students. In the first, participants were subliminally exposed to one of two words – ignorant or educated. This was immediately followed by a photograph of a black man’s face. At a later stage, participants were shown seven photographs that depicted the same face – the original, three with lighter skin and three with darker skin. They were then asked to pick which picture was the one they had seen originally. Findings showed that participants primed with the word “educated” showed more memory errors in picking lighter skin-toned pictures than those who had subliminally seen with word “ignorant”. Ben-Zeev said: “Uncovering a skin tone memory bias, such that an educated Black man becomes lighter in the mind’s eye, has grave implications. We already know from past researchers about the disconcerting tendency to harbour more negative attitudes about people with darker complexions (e.g., the darker a Black male is, the more aggressive he is perceived to be). “A skin tone memory bias highlights how memory protects this ‘darker is more negative’ belief by distorting counter-stereotypic Black individuals’ skin tone to appear lighter and perhaps to be perceived as less threatening.” Interesting. Paul Walker is dead after a fiery, single-car accident and explosion in California Saturday. The driver of the car lost control and both men passed away. A rep for the actor confirmed the tragedy on his official Facebook page. He was only 40, and Walker leaves behind 15-year-old daughter Meadow. The Fast & The Furious star’s final act was a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide. It was at this event where Paul Walker died . Whether you were a friend, a co-worker or just a fan, everybody loved Paul. That much is obvious from the outpouring of sadness that followed his untimely death. Almost instantly, stars took to Twitter to offer their condolences for or memories of the actor.
