REVIEW: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Falters With Forced Romance

If the world were ending imminently — say, in three weeks — would you throw off the shackles of social confines and indulge in every crazy impulse the moment inspired? Would you seek out your loved ones in order to spend your last days in their company? Would you just stay put and continue on as normal right up until the final moment?  Seeking a Friend for the End of the World , the directorial debut of  Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist writer Lorene Scafaria, combines a deviously tragicomic take on the approaching annihilation of mankind with a irritatingly unconvincing and unnecessary love story. Until romance reluctantly but unavoidably creaks into the story (seeking a friend, my ass), the film starts off so well, exploring the most prosaic of upcoming apocalypses as seen through the eyes of Dodge ( Steve Carell ), a man whose life has been largely unexceptional and is now about to come to an end, along with most everyone else’s. (One of the film’s nice touches is an overheard radio broadcast about how the planet’s best and brightest are being gathered into some kind of ark — a standard issue global cataclysm plot point never touched on again, because the characters in this film aren’t exceptional enough to be plucked up.) At the outset beginning, he and his wife listen to a news announcement about how a last effort to stop a giant asteroid headed toward us has failed, and that impact was in an estimated 21 days. She looks at him, and then runs for the hills, never to be seen again. For a while, Dodge keeps going into work at his insurance company, where his boss notes that the few remaining employees are allowed to dress like it’s casual Friday every day, and wonders if anyone would like to take over as CFO. On the TV, there’s news that air travel has ended and cell phones are no longer working. At a dinner party being thrown by Dodge’s friends Warren (Rob Corddry) and Diane (Connie Britton), polite talk about what attendees plan to do with the rest of their time (one member suggests she’s going to finally take that pottery class she’s been meaning to) devolves into wild debauchery, getting the children drunk and someone arriving with hard drugs like you would a nice bottle of wine for the table. “I regret my entire life,” Dodge says, and seems ready to let that be the sentiment with which he waits out Armageddon, until he has a chance encounter with his neighbor Penny ( Keira Knightley ), a flaky, teary Brit who has just broken up with her boyfriend Owen (Adam Brody) and now mourns the fact that she has no way to make it back to England to see her family one last time. She also has a pile of his letters that were accidentally put in her box — three years worth — including one from his high school girlfriend saying he’s the love of her life. Penny has a car and Dodge knows someone who has a plane, and the two make a deal to help each other get where they need to go. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is primarily a meander through random encounters on the road toward Dodge’s old sweetheart, most of them wild-eyed but sweet — aside from a riot that springs up in Los-Angeles-barely-pretending-to-be-New-York, where the pair live, the film’s world is good-hearted even when faced with impending doom. Whether encountering survivalists or the dedicated, giddy employees of a chain restaurant, everyone quivers with a delirious what-the-hell vibe that’s melancholy and amusing. Our obsession with the apocalypse is stronger than ever — it practically merits its own movie subsection, if its too scattered to be a genre. There’s no reason why the end of the world shouldn’t get the romantic comedy treatment, but the connection that springs up between Dodge and Penny feels awkward and forced. It’s not just that Carell is 22 years older than Knightley, or that the process in which he falls in love with her consists of him staring puppy-dog like while she weeps on the phone to her family — it’s that the idea of two people finding an unexpected connection to one another and offering up kindness in desperate times is actually much more touching than the insistence that they’re last-minute soulmates. Carell and Knightley have no spark of romantic chemistry between them — in fact, they actually clash in more interesting ways, with Dodge being a morose wet blanket and Penny coming across as a disaster who tends to allow major mistake to happen and then cry about them. The things they stumble onto — dinner in an abandoned house, a line of people headed to the beach — have a warm, wistful tangibility to them, in the way that you’d think the conscious gathering of last experiences would. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World ‘s effusive declarations of love just seem like the stagey stuff of movies — they’ve got nothing on the moment in which Dodge lies on the carpet and listens the Walker Brothers’ “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)” on vinyl while he waits for the earth to be destroyed. Prometheus Secrets Revealed: What Did David Say to the Engineer?

Of the many, many unexplained puzzles left untangled in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus , one deliberately vague scene has had Prometheus -watchers scratching their heads and speculating for weeks — let’s call it the “Lost in Translation” question. So what did Michael Fassbender’s David say, in non-translated ancient alien-speak, to a certain you-know-who in Prometheus ? Actual answers within! Spoilers follow. Over at The Bioscopist blog, Stu Holmes was wondering the same question when he managed to track down the real-life linguistics expert who served as consultant on the film, Dr. Anil Biltoo of London’s SOAS Language Centre. Biltoo not only taught Fassbender how to speak in Proto-Indo-European (PIE) language as the android David — seen studying ancient communication as the crew sleeps in the film’s opening measures — he also appeared onscreen as the holographic linguistics teacher David learns from as he recites the real-life text Schleicher’s Fable, a story created in 1868 in the reconstructed PIE language. While Scott, Damon Lindelof , and Co. remain mum about Prometheus ‘s many open-ended provocations, Biltoo revealed what it is that David whispers to the Engineer at the end of the film, setting off the being’s violent rampage: The line that David speaks to the Engineer (which is from a longer sequence that didn’t make the final edit) is as follows: /ida hmanəm aɪ kja namṛtuh zdɛ:taha/…/ghʷɪvah-pjorn-ɪttham sas da:tṛ kredah/ A serviceable translation into English is: ‘This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life’. Aha! So… according to Dr. Biltoo, David did as directed by Weyland, with no funny business involved. I’d entertained the thought that David had deliberately provoked the Engineer into attacking Weyland, but Biltoo sets the record, and David, straight: A loyal robot to the end. Kinda. The revelation also supports the idea that the Engineers were set on punishing humanity for their flaws and hubris, though why the Engineer then tore off David’s head is still a mystery. More intriguing is what Dr. Biltoo shares about that scene: There was a full conversation in the PIE language between David and the Engineer. “We’re all going to have to wait for the director’s cut to see if the conversation between the Engineer and David — and there was indeed originally a conversation, not merely an utterance from David — yields any fruit,” he said. How does the David revelation affect your thoughts on Prometheus ? Sound off below. [ The Bioscopist via Rope of Silicon ]

‘Catching Fire’ Casting Rumors: Hunter Parrish Weighs In

‘Weeds’ actor, who was up for the role of Peeta in ‘Hunger Games,’ tells MTV News he’d ‘love’ to play Finnick in the sequel. By Kara Warner Hunter Parrish Photo: Our fellow “Hunger Games” fans will likely recall the fact that the casting process for the first film garnered more than a few headlines, particularly regarding the roles of Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Now that those roles have long been filled and the movie has gone on to break box-office records, we have been focused on the casting rumors around its sequel, “Catching Fire.” While Lionsgate hasn’t made any announcements about who will join the cast for the sequel, particularly as fan-favorite character Finnick Odair, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning out likely prospects. One of the fan-supported candidates is “Weeds” actor Hunter Parrish, who was also an early favorite to play Peeta until Josh Hutcherson won the role. When MTV News caught up with Parrish recently to discuss the release of his first single, “Sitting at Home,” we couldn’t help but ask for his thoughts on the franchise and also being considered for Finnick. “This whole ‘Hunger Games’ thing, man … I’ve read all of the books, because I’ve been through this once before,” Parrish said. “It was very exciting for me [to be considered] for the first movie, to be a part of that, and I read all of the books at that time, and I loved the script and the director and Jennifer Lawrence who was cast at that point. I saw it as something very exciting, and I was very excited about it, but it wasn’t [meant to be]. Josh is also a friend of mine, and I haven’t seen the film yet, but people say amazing things about it, and he’s great, he’s perfect. We’ve worked together before, and he’s a great actor,” Parrish said sincerely. While Parrish is grateful for the fan support behind the Finnick campaign, his experience from the first round of casting has him feeling more cautious about things this time around. “I kind of dove in for that one, so for this one, I don’t know,” he said. “I think you just kind of step back, and if it happens, it happens. I’m not going to really spend too much time thinking about it, but I’d love to. I wouldn’t cast myself, but that’s not helping me getting cast for that movie,” he joked. “But I’m a fan of the books. I think there’s fantastic actors that would probably be better. So there’s that for getting me a job!” In continuing with his gracious thoughts about other actors he’d consider for Finnick, we asked Parrish if he wanted to give a shout-out to any for fun. “No, I wouldn’t go that far!” he laughed. “I still want the job, I’m just saying … ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Britney Spears ‘X Factor’ Rumors Are ‘Nonsense,’ Simon Cowell Says

‘She’s got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her,’ Cowell says of new judge. By John Mitchell Britney Spears arrives for the first round of “X Factor” auditions in Austin Photo: Simon Cowell is clearly feeling better — after missing “The X Factor” auditions in Kansas City, Missouri, due to a bout of bronchitis — and he’s talking Britney Spears . Cameramen from X17 caught up with Cowell while he was riding in his town car in Beverly Hills, and they found the oft-testy reality-show judge and music executive to be in a particularly good mood. Cowell addressed a variety of tabloid rumors regarding Spears — namely that she’s had some issues on set and that she’s shaping up to be one of the tougher judges. When a cameraman asked whether “Britney’s too unstable” to judge “X Factor,” Cowell responded, “No, she’s not unstable. I’m the one who’s unstable! She’s working out great. All these reports that we’ve fallen out are nonsense. She’s doing a great job.” Cowell’s car then pulls away, but again comes to a stop in traffic, allowing the paparazzi to continue his questioning. Asked whether Spears was his favorite judge, Cowell said, “There’s only two girls,” referring to Demi Lovato, and went on to jokingly admit that he is his own favorite of all time. “Yeah, I’d say Simon Cowell is a great guy,” he quipped. “Very good looking.” Pressed further about Spears, Cowell offered more praise for the pop singer. “Like I said, she’s been amazing. She’s really taking time to learn how to do this,” he continued. “She’s got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her. It will be a big surprise. She’s a tough judge.” As tough as the famously direct Cowell? “I’m a pussycat,” he said playfully as his car pulled away. We guess all that talk that Spears has been “incredibly tough” on contestants might not be far from the truth. For her part, Spears responded to those rumors herself, taking to Twitter to say, “It’s all tough love … I promise!” Share your thoughts about Britney Spears judging “X Factor” in the comments below! Selena Gomez Fans, Prepare To Be ‘Shocked’ By ‘Spring Breakers’

Former Disney star talks to MTV News about ‘taking risks’ in her upcoming flick. By Cory Midgarden Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Selena Gomez is all grown up. The former “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress has traded in her Mickey Mouse ears for a two-toned bikini and a whole lot of scandal in the upcoming “Spring Breakers.” “People will be a little shocked, I think,” Gomez told MTV News while promoting her new self-titled fragrance in New York on Saturday. “I’m a little nervous about it but honestly it’s a right step for me, I’m really proud of it.” Also shaking their squeaky-clean images in the flick are “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson and Disney alum Vanessa Hudgens. The film follows the girls as they head to Florida for spring break, where they find themselves behind bars after robbing a restaurant. “I think as an actress it really challenged me,” Gomez said. “All of the other actresses are also trying to prove themselves, so it was just really, really fun.” Although Gomez is taking more chances with both her acting and music, there is still one role that is a little too racy for the 19-year-old: “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “I know I’m taking risks but I don’t think I could do that,” she told MTV News. “That would be a little too much for me.” Gomez became familiar with the hot and heavy storyline after being approached to star in Funny or Die’s “Fifty Shades of Blue.” “When they told me about the skit, I didn’t know what [‘Fifty Shades of Grey’] was about, so I started to read it and was like, oh, this is spicy, I thought it was good, it was intriguing,” she said. “The skit was really funny.” So with all of this research under her belt, who does the 19-year-old think should play S&M-loving Christian Grey’s object of affection? “Someone older should do that part,” she replied. James Franco Crowns Kristen Stewart ‘Warrior Queen’

Oscar-nominated actor compares ‘Twilight’ star to her ‘Snow White’ character in a Huffington Post article. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz If you looked up “jack of all trades” in the dictionary, we’re pretty sure you’d find a picture of James Franco . His credits include actor, author, producer, director, artist, student, teacher — we’d go on, but we think you get the picture. He’s recently become a contributor to The Huffington Post , and his latest article is a review of “Snow White and the Huntsman” that successfully compares Kristen Stewart to her edgy character. “[‘Snow White’] could also be said to parallel Stewart’s rise to stardom,” Franco writes. “Some might argue that Stewart — or any young upstart buoyed by the surge of a successful franchise, album, or Internet meme — is just as unjustly charmed. Some could say she had a lucky break when she was cast in ‘Twilight’ and then rose to international stardom based less on her own skills than on the success of the project. But, whereas ‘Snow White’ would more than likely be inarticulate, diseased and frail after being confined in a tower for 10 years, Kristen Stewart landed ‘Twilight’ after years of working with some of the best directors in the business (David Fincher, Sean Penn). She actually does deserve the crown.” Franco’s critique recognizes the challenge filmmakers face when turning a fairy tale into a live-action film instead of simply animating it. He notes that Peter Jackson revolutionized the film industry with “Lord of the Rings,” greatly enhancing the technology aspect of fantasy stories. But whereas “Puss in Boots” can skim emotional development by falling in love in seconds, Stewart must prove to an audience that her romantic entanglements are real. Franco then relates Snow White’s epic battle against Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen as Stewart’s fight for recognition among Hollywood’s honored elite, believing Stewart deserves more credit than she’s given. “The images of Snow White as a leader of immense strength, charging on horseback across the beach at the head of an army, has less to do with her character and more to do with the actress who plays her,” Franco pens. “Stewart has braved more scrutiny of her private life than most presidents. She has taken big career risks by doing films like ‘Welcome to the Rileys,’ ‘The Runaways’ and ‘On the Road’ (nudity , I hear). She has worked her ass off. Whatever Snow White may be, Kristen is a warrior queen. Give her the crown.” This isn’t the first time Franco divulged his thoughts on one of Stewart’s projects. He frequently mentioned wanting to be involved in “Twilight” on late-night talk shows and even told Jimmy Kimmel he wanted to sing a song with Robert Pattinson or helm a skit with the cast for his Academy Award hosting debut. When MTV News caught up with the actor at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, he had read the first three books and saw the first three films, prompting us to ask him about his thoughts on the series he deemed “fascinating.” “[Along with the books, the] movies are interesting also because they’ve really become part of the whole ‘Twilight’ phenomenon, and it’s really hard to extricate those actors from the reading experience or just the phenomenon of ‘Twilight’ now,” he said. “They’ve become a part of it to the point that the movies are almost commenting on themselves. There will be a scene where the go-to guys, Taylor and Rob, are in the tent, it’s almost like a ‘Brokeback Mountain’ scene, where the two guys are talking in a tent and the girl is asleep, and they’re having, like, this romantic moment almost through her, in a way. One of them says, ‘Well, I’m hotter than you,’ and it’s almost like they’re winking at the fans, like to the Team Jacob or the Team Edwards.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . If Nicki Minaj Isn’t Hip-Hop, Neither Is Eminem, Ed Lover Says

But Doctor Dre tells ‘RapFix Live’ Nicki should have played Summer Jam: ‘You go out there and you perform for your fans.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage When it comes to Nicki Minaj versus Hot 97 , it’s hard not to have an opinion. And, of course, Sunday’s Summer Jam drama came up during Wednesday’s (June 6) “RapFix Live.” During the special episode, MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway shared hosting duties with “Yo! MTV Raps” legends Ed Lover and Doctor Dre, who weighed in on the situation. “You can’t look at anybody that crosses over and achieves pop appeal as a sellout, because that’s what you’re trying to do when you put a record out,” Ed Lover said. “So if Nicki Minaj ain’t real hip-hop, then Public Enemy wasn’t real hip-hop, then Run-DMC wasn’t real hip-hop, then Eminem ain’t real hip-hop.” After Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg criticized Nicki’s “Starships” single, suggesting the track wasn’t real hip-hop, Minaj’s Young Money boss Lil Wayne decided to cancel the Summer Jam performance. According to Doctor Dre, that’s a no-no: The show must go on. “First of all, Nicki Minaj was the only one who ruined 55,000 fans’ expectations of the night. It has nothing to do with Rosenberg. You go out there and you perform for your fans,” he said. While Dre feels that Nicki should have performed that night, he also believes Rosenberg was out of line. “We have too many what I call ‘semi-super experts’ who always try to redefine hip-hop from its infancy,” he argued. In the late 1990s, Ed and Dre hosted “Yo! MTV Raps,” and on Thursday, they will be the subjects of VH1’s new Rock Doc “Yo: The Story of Yo! MTV Raps.” During their iconic run, they’ve interviewed artists such as 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G. and Rakim, just to name a few. They’ve seen many artists come and go. “She’s an artist whether I like her or I don’t like her. My daughter loves her and thinks that she’s the world, and that’s the case,” Dre said before issuing a challenge to Rosenberg. “You make your record and get in the ring and let’s see how you react, whether you start to sell out or not.” Where do you stand in the Young Money/ Summer Jam drama? WATCH: Amber Rose Cooks And Cracks Us Up With ‘Hair’-Raising Tales!

Model kicks off MTV News’ ‘BFFs’ with hilarious — and very unglamorous — memories from her Philly days. By Rya Backer Amber Rose gets down in the kitchen on “BFFs” Photo: MTV News I knew we had to go big to kick off our newest segment, “BFFs.” A companion of sorts to our popular “First Date,” in this series, I get to hang out with some of our favorite women in entertainment, spending time with them as I would with my actual close girlfriends. So after watching Amber Rose on “RapFix Live,” where she presented herself as strong, funny and candid, I knew she would be the perfect fit. Rose held nothing back with MTV News’ Sway Calloway during that interview a few months ago, and though her tears from a past heartbreak got quite a bit of coverage, one of the things I found most compelling about her was just how intensely love-struck she is once again. She’s very much in love with her fianc
