‘W.E.’ director tells MTV News she prefers directing because ‘If I’m the actor, I’m just … I’m a pawn.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Madonna directing “W.E.” Photo: The Weinstein Co. Madonna has given the whole thespian thing a try several times over. So, the idea of hitting the big screen again in front of the camera doesn’t really appeal much to the “W.E.” writer and director. “No [I don’t want to act], but I do [act] every day of my life,” she told MTV News, before waxing a bit more philosophical about her future ambitions for a career on the big screen. “I like directing better,” she further explained. “If I write it and direct it, then it’s my voice. If I’m the actor, I’m just … I’m a pawn.” As Madonna embarks on yet another chapter in her always-evolving career, she explains that she hopes that people will be able to love her for every project she’s attached herself to in her decades-spanning career. “I’d rather not divide things up into categories, but I prefer the idea that people would say that I contributed to the culture, the zeitgeist from a female perspective as a musician, as a songwriter, as a filmmaker, in my political point of views of the issues that I’ve stood by and fought for,” she said. “I hope that I consider all of these things to be a part of my body of work and I’d rather not go, ‘Oh, she’ll be remembered as a great filmmaker, a great songwriter.’ ” “W.E.” opens Friday and follows two parallel love stories. It focuses on the vintage, tabloid romance between American divorc

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ actor Oscar Isaac has been recording music with Timberlake for the ’60s folk flick. By Jocelyn Vena “W.E.” star Oscar Isaac is deep in musical preparations for the next Coen Brothers film, “Inside Llewyn Davis,” in which he’ll play the title character. In a couple weeks, Isaac and his castmates, including Justin Timberlake , Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund, will be on set, but until then they are in the recording studio putting the finishing touches on the film’s musical elements. “Right now I’m gearing up for the Coen Brothers film, which is all music based,” he told MTV News at the New York premiere of the Madonna-directed “W.E.” “So that’s actually taking up a lot of the musical creative energy. So excited.” Isaac, much like his co-stars, has dabbled in music, having put off recording his own music to focus on the film. And with some assistance from some big-name musical heavyweights, the music is destined to shine. The actor said the cast is currently in the studio with Timberlake, the Punch Brothers, T-Bone Burnett and Mulligan’s fianc
President Obama’s speech has supporters feeling optimistic, young voters tell MTV News. By Kimberly Reynolds, with reporting by Uptin Saiidi President Barack Obama Photo: Bill O’Leary/ Getty Images Young voters across the country tuned in with anticipation Tuesday night to watch President Obama’s State of the Union address . At a New York viewing party sponsored by Gen44 — a Democratic National Committee initiative to politically engage young professionals — MTV News asked voters’ opinions on how the president plans to address the issues facing the country. While the event was filled with mostly Obama supporters, there were still some skeptics. Simone Rakhit supported Obama in the 2008 election — as did 66 percent of voters age 18 to 29 — but started to become disengaged with the president in the three years since he took office and in the upcoming election. “For me, I had lost a little bit of interest, but seeing him tonight, I kind of got that spark back,” Rakhit said. “I kind of got excited again.” Many young voters agreed that the president has a tough road ahead of him in accomplishing the goals he set forth in the State of the Union address, especially in boosting the economy. But they were still optimistic he could get the job done. “I think the president did a great job tonight in addressing all of my concerns, and I think he did it in such a way that he could get a lot of people to rally around him and not just his supporters,” Karsten Vagner said. “I think Americans are led by example. I think if we’re divided as a country, it’s because our government is divided.” Despite the president’s low approval rating and this being an election year, voters we spoke to were glad the president did not hold back in his speech. “I thought it was great that he had Warren Buffett’s secretary out there to serve as a visual example of just how absurd our tax system really is,” Michael Ettanani said. Vagner appreciated Obama’s no-holds-barred approach to the speech: “Tonight was a really good example of seeing people together, and I think it’s because we have a strong leader in the White House.” Shatha Dweik, who is pursuing a master’s degree, was most interested in hearing the president’s plans for job creation for recent graduates as well as his plan to extend the tuition tax credit. “My biggest concern is getting a job, and a good paying job at that,” Dweik shared. After the speech, Dweik said she had “a little bit of confidence in him — a little bit more than I had going into the address.” For her, the message of Tuesday night’s speech was: “There is still hope.” Share your thoughts on the president’s State of the Union address in the comments below. And he isn’t the only one — check out our musical recap of the latest episode! By Jim Cantiello The cast of “Glee” on Tuesday’s episode Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s “Glee” was all about Will Schuester’s proposal to longtime germaphobe girlfriend Emma, and since he apparently lacks any adult friends, he enlisted his glee-club “family” to help out. They pitched potential songs, ranging from a kick-ass “Moves Like Jagger/ Jumping Jack Flash” mash-up to a sensitive Rachel Berry cover of David Guetta and Usher’s “Without You.” But it was the girls’ “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” that awakened Mercedes’ old feelings for Trouty Mouth. Meanwhile, Becky went after the man she loves — fellow handi-capable student Artie — and viewers sat and watched their brief relationship sour. Bummer. Bigger bummer? Finn’s mom revealed the real way his soldier dad died. Biggest bummer? No Klaine. It was an intense episode filled with belly laughs, several Kleenex-grabs, synchronized swimming, random guest stars and a shocking Finn/Rachel proposal cliffhanger. And it inspired this piano ballad musical “Glee”-cap. Hit play on the embedded video below to check it out, and sing along with the lyrics. Viola Davis and Michelle Williams, but who should win? MTV News breaks it down. By Kevin P. Sullivan Viola Davis in “The Help” Photo: Dreamworks After holding our breath for almost a month, on Sunday, we will find out who will be taking home this year’s Golden Globes . The competition has shifted significantly since the nominees were first announced in December, so we’re going to take a look at where the hopefuls stand and who has the best shot at winning gold. Here are our thoughts on the categories of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical: Best Actress – Drama This Globes category contains the two nominees most people consider the lead contenders for Best Actress on Oscar night. Expect people to be paying close attention to this category in particular, since there hasn’t been a runaway favorite throughout awards season. This award could change all of that. Who Will Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” With her win at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards , Davis confirmed theories that she was the favorite in this category. Her powerful performance played well with audiences across the board in a movie generally more liked than those of other nominees. Who Should Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” Sorry, Ms. Streep, this is simply Davis’ year. Hers was an emotionally powerful performance and the one that left audiences weeping. She’s the favorite for a reason. Best Actress – Comedy or Musical With the exception of Michelle Williams, the actresses in this category turned in great performances but have lacked the buzz to make them serious Oscar contenders. Unfortunately, this category will be one of the few chances to honor some of the year’s best unsung performances. Who Will Win : Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn.” It’s the dramatic role in the comedy category. That’s not the only difference here; Williams’ portrayal of the blond bombshell has been mentioned in nearly every other actress’ honor, unlike many of her fellow nominees. It’s an iconic performance that might skate by on an odd categorization. Who Should Win : Charlize Theron for “Young Adult.” It took balls to bring life to the wholly unlikable Mavis Gary, and it’s exactly the kind of unsympathetic portrayal that is rarely seen these days. Theron pushed away convention and expectation and turned in one of the most memorable performances in a stellar career. ‘I look up to that guy like crazy,’ Noah ’40’ Shebib says of Kanye. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: Getty Images It’s common knowledge that Common and Drake aren’t exactly best of friends right now. But their camps haven’t been seeing eye to eye for quite some time. Pusha T appears to be taking shots at Drake on his recent “Sweet” and “Don’t F— with Me” freestyles, all over the beats of Common ‘s “Sweet” and Drake’s “Dreams Money Can Buy.” Lil Wayne and Jay-Z have been exchanging competitive subliminal shots for a while now, but those shots delivered last year on The Throne’s “H.A.M” and Wayne’s “It’s Good” were probably the most talked about. Kanye West and Drake even seem to be taking jabs at each other, first on DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One,” (I’m just feelin’ like The Throne is for the takin’/ Watch me take it) and then The Throne’s “Otis” (I adopted these n—as/ Philip Drummond them/ Now, I’m about to make them tuck they whole summer in). Despite all of this, when MTV News caught up Drake’s producer, Noah “40” Shebib, in Toronto early last month, he said that there was no competition with Kanye. In the August/September 2010 issue of Vibe , 40 said that ‘Ye cursed him out for “borrowing” his sound. But even then, the producer maintained that there was no competition and said that West was a huge influence on him. “I look up to that guy like crazy. I always have and I always will,” 40 said. “That’s someone who’s carved out a sound for rap music a couple of times, who has really influenced and changed the game as an individual. It would be crazy to say there’s competition.” He added that people should understand the difference between stealing another artist’s style and being influenced by him. “You’re supposed to be a hybrid. When you got T.I. and Nas and Jay-Z and Wayne and Kanye and Eminem, all these different types of rappers from different places and so on and so forth, I would expect a couple of years after that a new rapper would comes out who incorporates all of those people. Because that’s the evolution of it and that’s what will always happen, so I don’t even look at it as like biting or stealing or this or that,” 40 said. “I’m grateful to any and everybody that’s ever influenced me, including Mr. West.” All week, we’ll bring you highlights from our candid interview with Drake producer Noah “40” Shebib . Be sure to keep it locked here as 40 talks Take Care and his thoughts on everything from working with Lil Wayne to Drizzy’s next single with Rihanna. Actress excited to reunite with ‘Starter for 10′ co-star Cumberbatch, who was recently cast as sequel’s villain. By Kara Warner Alice Eve Photo: Getty Images We have a long wait ahead of us before J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel hits theaters, but in recent weeks, the agony of the film’s 2013 release has been made less so with the news that Benedict Cumberbatch has joined the film as its chief villain. Although Cumberbatch is relatively new to audiences, via “Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy” and “War Horse” this year, he’s a well-known actor in the U.K. and already has legions of fans. One of those fans is “Trek” co-star Alice Eve, who worked with Cumberbatch a few years back in the well-received British comedy “Starter for 10.” MTV News recently caught up with Eve, one of our Ones to Watch in 2012 , and asked her thoughts on reuniting with Cumberbatch for “Trek 2.” “I’m very excited to work with him again. He’s so very funny, Ben,” she said. “I don’t know if you remember his character in ‘Starter for 10,’ but he was so funny. Like King of the Geeks, but he did it so well, and I found a lot of that hard to get through because he was so funny. I like him very much.” Eve went on to say that she’s very much looking forward to getting to work on “Trek 2,” particularly because of the camaraderie among the cast. “It’s similar to ‘Starter for 10,’ from my point of view, in that there is a group of young actors who have a team spirit, which is always so revivifying to be a part of,” she said. “When there’s a group of people who you can spend time with and work with and get to know, a real good experience, it’s kind of like going back to university or something, when everyone has got the same objective. There’s a lot of energy, and it’s a nice thing to be a part of that group. That’s the thing that excites me most about it. Obviously, there is a huge legacy there with ‘Star Trek’ and the fanatics, so hopefully they’ll be satisfied.” The “Raven” and “Men in Black 3” star didn’t reveal any details about her character, only agreeing with us when we mentioned the fact that director J.J. Abrams likes to feature strong women in his films. Eve said she feels fortunate to be a part of the film. “I feel incredibly lucky. I would say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s not once-in-a-lifetime, but it is rare. It’s one of life’s great pleasures to enjoy the group you work with, because we all know what it’s like when you don’t.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Star Trek 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
