From Eva Green’s witch, Angelique, to what’s really up with Dr. Hoffman, here are the top things we’re itching to see. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on the set of “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures We are just five months away from the release of the hottest vampire movie that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine, and we’re starting to get excited. Very excited. But unlike the other major movies that have earned themselves a column here at MTV — “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga” — we are still waiting for a trailer for “Dark Shadows.” And, well, we’re starting to get pretty impatient. So far, director Tim Burton has kept a tight lid on his vampire soap opera — only a few official pics from the set (and one much-discussed paparazzi shot of Johnny Depp in character as Barnabas Collins) have been released. But the new year should bring fresh blood. We know filming has wrapped and that things apparently went so well on set that Michelle Pfeiffer told MTV News while promoting “New Year’s Eve” that working on “Dark Shadows” was “a dream job.” Pfeiffer, who plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, added that she hopes the film does well so “we can do a bunch of them, because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Whether that on-set camaraderie will translate into the campy big-screen spook-fest we’re hoping for remains to be seen, and while we hope the trailer doesn’t give too much away, here are a few things we’re hoping to see when it arrives. 1. Eva Green in action as Angelique Angelique Bouchard is the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire in the late 1700s after their affair went sour. She’s a woman with an axe to grind and has been haunting and cursing the Collins family ever since. So far, the only image we’ve seen of Green in character is the full cast shot, in which she stands in the background wearing modern clothes. We hope the trailer gives us a taste of how the “Casino Royale” Bond girl is going to play the over-the-top villainess. This is a scenery-chewing role that any actress worth her salt would have a field day with. We have faith that the super sexy starlet will do it justice, but a little advance evidence would be nice. We want to see corsets, blood and maybe a voodoo doll or two. 2. A little insight into what Dr. Hoffman is up to For us, one of the biggest mysteries of the film is exactly what role Helena Bonham Carter’s Dr. Julia Hoffman will play in the shenanigans at Collinwood Mansion. The actress has described her character as “an alcoholic psychologist,” and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith told Entertainment Weekly that Hoffman “has been there for years, working with David [Collins] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother.” Grahame-Smith goes on to describe the character as “a woman with a lot of secrets herself” who is “interested in Barnabas in more than one way.” What no one has mentioned is Hoffman’s role, in the original series, as a blood disorders specialist who attempts to cure Barnabas of his vampirism. We’ll be watching this trailer very closely to see if HBC is carrying more vials than she is notepads. 3. Collinwood Mansion We got a glimpse of the manor in the cast shot, with its Gothic windows and ancient-looking rugs, but we’re excited to see the rest of the haunted mansion. Overlooking the Atlantic from Collinsport, Maine, the house contains a room that is a gateway to a parallel time, for goodness’ sake. Given that so much of the action of the series takes place within the walls of the mansion, we’re really hoping that Burton and his first-class team of art directors, set designers and cinematographers got it right and captured the regal horror of the place. From the film’s premiere to casting ‘Catching Fire,’ Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the “Hunger Games” trailer Photo: Lionsgate The past year boasted a cornucopia of ” Hunger Games ” highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song “Safe and Sound.” But as bountiful as 2011’s harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23. Though our calls to Greasy Sae’s Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem’s people. Read on for our five forecasts: 1. One more trailer With just about two and a half months to go until the first film’s debut, we’d bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include , well, we’re less sure about that, but we wouldn’t mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes. 2. A full soundtrack announcement Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire’s husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I’ve already made my plea for Florence and the Machine , while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for this one. 3. The film’s premiere Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for “Hunger Games” acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we’re more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie’s premieres and publicity circuit. 4. Casting “Catching Fire” With the second “Hunger Games” installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick , Johanna, Beetee and Mags? 5. First look at “Catching Fire” Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don’t think it’s completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here’s hoping the “Catching Fire” director (whomever he/she will be) isn’t afraid to take a cue from “Breaking Dawn” helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final “Twilight” installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, “Hunger Games” fans? What are your expectations for “The Hunger Games” in 2012? Sarah Palin weighed in on the race for the White House last night. You were dying to hear from her, we know. You’re so welcome. Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity , Palin, who hasn’t endorsed a Republican candidate in the 2012 campaign, offered general praise for the field after Tuesday’s Iowa caucus results , reserving the red meat for President Barack Obama. Sarah Palin on Hannity “My concern is for the GOP candidate who wins this primary as they go forward to face the Obama presidential ticket machine and really the thuggery that is involved in that,” Palin said, segueing to John McCain’s endorsement of Mitt Romney . “I believe that Senator McCain, in his endorsement of Mitt Romney, Senator McCain and I, we’re the only ones in America who have ever had to face that Obama presidential ticket machine and all that it encompassed,” she added. “What it encompassed, you know, this unscrupulous, gimmicky scheme that it was.” “Senator McCain, evidently has chosen Mitt Romney as the one to be the most prepared to face this thuggery, this scheme that someone’s going to have to face.” Is Romney the best prepared? Or the most electable? Do you wish Palin would have run for President herself? Or that she’d go away forever? Share your thoughts with us.
After ‘Ye mentioned his possible involvement in the film, Denise Di Novi tells MTV News about a ‘fun brainstorming conversation’ with the MC. By Eric Ditzian Kanye West Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In what would easily be the coolest movie news of 2012, Kanye West dropped word in the midst of a scorching series of Twitter updates that he was in discussions to join up with a long-gestating adaptation of “The Jetsons.” “I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie,” he wrote. Could it be true? The live-action adaptation of the futuristic Hanna-Barbera cartoon — starring George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, Jane his wife, plus their robot maid Rosie — has been in development for years, with Robert Rodriguez attached to direct at one point. MTV News put in a call to producer Denise Di Novi, who confirmed that talks with ‘Ye had indeed taken place. “Kanye’s always been a Jetsons fan, I think because he’s so into design and he loves the design aspects,” she told us exclusively. “So we had a fun brainstorming conversation.” The call took place after West touched base with producers and told them he was interested in working on the project. “We heard that he knew we were working on the Jetsons,” Di Novi said. “He reached out and said he’s a huge Jetsons fan. There are a lot of Jetsons fanatics out there, especially people that are into either futuristic science or design. He was interested in creatively brainstorming what we were doing with the movie and what ideas he might have. It was a really friendly, preliminary conversation.” At this point, though, Di Novi is unsure if Kanye will actually sign on to become creative director of “The Jetsons.” “He was going to think about it more and see if he got inspired visually,” she said. “He’s a very visual artist.” Kanye did mention in his Twitter spree that he was annoyed about one suggestion that arose during the conversation. “Someone on the call yelled out.. you should do a Jetsons tour!” he wrote. “This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course because for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour…Or Coachella or Glow in the Dark or Runaway.. you know I have real ideas.” Di Novi, however, said the tour comment was nothing more than a good-natured joke, especially because her production company is involved solely in the movie business. “We were just kind of joking about that,” said Di Nova, whose credits include “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and many Tim Burton films. “I don’t know if he would want to do that, but it was just a fun comment.” What do you think Kanye would bring to a “Jetsons” movie? ‘We’re hitting the boardwalk hard,’ JWoww says of the new season, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. By James Montgomery “Jersey Shore” stars Jwoww, Snooki, Sammi and Deena Photo: MTV News The “Jersey Shore” gang heads back to their spiritual home of Seaside Heights on the fifth season, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET. And from the sound of things, that triumphant return couldn’t have come quickly enough. After a drama-filled Italian holiday, the “Shore” stars were looking forward to getting back to the boardwalk. “We’re hitting the boardwalk hard and [there’s] just overall excitement,” JWOWW told MTV News. “[There was] the anticipation and the anxiety of just being home, because we were away from our family and friends for so long. It’s a little overwhelming.” Those same sentiments were echoed by the guys of the “Shore” earlier this week, when they told MTV News that the in-house tensions that plagued the cast during season four — infighting, headbutting, ill-fated hookups and vehicular mishaps — had all but disappeared by the time they hit Seaside (thanks to the availability of good barbers and “easy women”). The girls were especially happy to bid arrivederci to Italy. And let’s just say they hit the ground running. “I think in Italy it was all drama because we missed home and obviously some people were stirring up unnecessary fake rumors in the house,” Snooki sighed. “So when we get back to Jersey, you’re gonna see that pan out more. But altogether I think we just couldn’t wait to get home and we went crazy.” The fifth season of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing “Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog. Are you excited for the fifth season of “Jersey Shore”? Share your thoughts in the comments! Nick Cannon is recuperating after suffering a “mild kidney failure,” the 31-year-old’s wife Mariah Carey announced on Twitter today. Mariah uploaded a photo of herself with hubby Nick from inside his Aspen, Colorado hospital room. “We’re trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful,” she wrote on her official website, adding that doctors tried — and failed — to remove her from Cannon’s room. “We’re doing OK but we’re stranded in Aspen,” Carey added. “I know, we could be in a lot worse places, but the truth is as long as we’re together, we’re OK.” I’m not trying to make light out of the situation because it’s a serious moment that’s very tough on all of us,” Carey, mother to twins Moroccan and Monroe, wrote. “So please keep us and our family in your prayers.” We hope Nick gets better soon! Teens and 20-somethings at ‘Rock the Caucus’ talk to MTV News about the GOP hopefuls in Iowa on Tuesday. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Joel Hanek Ron Paul speaks during a “Rock the Caucus” event at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — How important is the youth vote to the Republican party? So important that on Tuesday morning (January 3), two of the leading candidates in tonight’s crucial Iowa caucus took time out from their vacuum-packed schedules to address a throng of pumped-up teens at a “Rock the Caucus” event in the gymnasium of Valley High School in West Des Moines. Although Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is polling in the single digits and widely expected to have a poor showing at the first-in-the-nation caucus, GOP contenders Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum were close to neck-and-neck for the second-place spot in final polling on Monday. As MTV News found as we headed to Iowa for our Power of 12 campaign, all three caught the attention of voters who are eager to step up for their man/woman. Thomas Deacon, 21, woke up before 7 a.m. to drive from Lawrence, Kansas, with two of his friends and hold up Ron Paul signs by the side of a busy road on Tuesday morning alongside Kansas City, Missouri, native Elizabeth Bronaugh, 22. “We’re just trying to get awareness about Ron Paul … and people are pretty receptive to it,” said David Megli, 22, who was interrupted by motorists driving by and honking their horns in support. Megli, wearing a knit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wool hat to ward off the cold, was a registered libertarian in 2008, but said he switched to the GOP for this election cycle. And, like his friends, he didn’t realize you had to be a student to attend the event, so he was stuck outside and was not able to hear Paul speak. Bronaugh said all four in her group backed libertarian Paul in the 2008 election because they appreciate his stance on civil liberties and small government. And though he’s the oldest candidate in the race at 76, Deacon said there’s a very good reason that Paul has gotten the attention of young voters. “He recognizes that if we’re doing personal activities that don’t harm other people, why should we be punished for that?” said Deacon, alluding to Paul’s position on the legalization of drugs and the nearly trillion-dollar cost of the 35-year-plus War on Drugs. Paul’s stances on state’s rights, avoiding a military conflict in Iran, smaller government and fewer taxes also appeal to the new generation of voters, Deacon said. “When Obama got elected, a lot of young people supported him because we thought we were going to get change,” Deacon said when asked about some of Paul’s more controversial policies regarding the elimination of the Dept. of Education and his call for an end to the student loan program.”But for the most part it’s been the same … you haven’t seen a lot of change,” he added, noting that he actually supported Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2008. “Obama seemed like an OK guy and I was excited about the change he was going to bring. There was a real upswell of energy. But I think he really wasted that.” This time, Bronaugh said, Paul is the one who has the same amount of energy and enthusiasm from young voters, but she believes he will follow through on his promises. Inside the gym, the candidates did their job, with Santorum giving a shout-out to the school’s mascot (“go Tigers!”) and Paul mentioning that his followers had recently given former “American Idol” Kelly Clarkson a sales bump. Valley student Allie Brown, 17, said she thought it was really cool that the candidates took time out from their final day of campaigning to visit the school. Brown was interested in Bachmann’s pledge to lower the price of gasoline through more oil exploration, an issue that’s obviously a big one for teen drivers. “I’m leaning toward Michele Bachmann because I think she’s really personable and sincerely cares about the things she’s talking about,” she said while standing in the school gym and sporting her “Rock the Caucus” T-shirt. Paul supporter Sulejman Malic, 17, was just blown away by the amount of press coverage at his school, and friend Pallavi Aurora, also 17, said the high-energy spirit of the event was getting her psyched up to vote— for the first time — later in the day for former Massachusetts governor and leading candidate Mitt Romney .
