End of Watch Trailer: Everyone Wants to Kill Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña

“From the writer of Training Day … and The Fast and the Furious …” Yeah, OK. The first trailer for the thriller End of Watch is all that lead-plated machismo and more jammed through the chaotic handheld prism of Crank and distilled with the essence of Jake Gyllenhaal until the potency has you lapsing into a cop-buddy-shoot-’em-up swoon, faceplanting helplessly into writer-director David Ayer’s oversaturated L.A. grit. And it’s got Michael Pe

Cupid Counterpoint: What’s the Most Heart-Shattering Break-Up in Movies?

You might have heard that it’s Valentine’s Day, which means romantic ruminations and reflections and perhaps an irresponsible outlay of cash in the humiliating pursuit of way more than a kiss goodnight. You know who you are. For others, it’s a chance to look on at the utter futility of love in all its heart-shattering horror. We know who we are, and it’s time to represent. To wit: Let’s talk about the most pulverizing break-ups in cinema. I’ll just get right to my pick: Cloris Leachman letting Timothy Bottoms have it at the end of The Last Picture Show . No Valentine’s Day is complete without a good, wracking cry, and I now can say I’ve had mine: Mrs. Popper’s classic “Never you mind” does technically open her relationship status with Sonny up to some ambiguity, but “You shouldn’t have come here; I’m around that corner now” pretty much cements the deal for me every single time . I’d also argue it cemented Leachman’s Oscar win for her performance; alas, that’s a conversation for another time. Your emotional mileage may and likely will vary, of course, so let’s hear about it below. Life is too short for love. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

American Reunion Redband Trailer Proves Things Haven’t Changed Since Jason Biggs’s Pie Days

Good news and bad news about American Reunion based on the very first (and very redband) teaser trailer that has just surfaced: Jason Biggs’s Jim still isn’t locking the door when he masturbates. This could be good news for American Pie purists who hoped the franchise would get back to basics this April, and bad news for fans who hoped Jim would never have to pleasure himself again with footwear after marrying Alyson Hannigan’s band geek Michelle in the third and most recent Pie installment, American Wedding .

Joel Schumacher on His Career, His Critics, and Why It’s OK to Laugh During Trespass

There’s no stopping Joel Schumacher , the 72-year-old filmmaker who returns to screens this week with the thriller Trespass . Though to invoke his name in some circles is to invite wishes he would stop; Schumacher has never been an especially popular director among the critical elite, and his latest film, a wild home-invasion potboiler co-starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman , won’t necessarily change things. But you know what? That’s a good thing — at least for Schumacher.

REVIEW: Flailing Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson Can’t Rescue The Guard

For those weary of parsing which part of the post- Dirty Harry , post-Tarantino cops and robbers homage is demonstrating its fondness for the genre and which is just declaring it, writer and director John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard is more exhausting than entertaining. Ideally one would have better things to do while in the act of watching a movie — like say watching the movie — but from its assaultive, nihilistic prologue to its last flat invocation of American culture, The Guard foregrounds the extent to which it is leaning on artifice and affect to get over.
