Pitbull And Wyclef Get Fit With Zumba

‘You go up there and you’re like, ‘Man I need to be a part of that,’ ‘ Pit tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Pitbull Photo: MTV News Pitbull and Wyclef Jean may have their roots in hip-hop, but through the years, both performers have garnered worldwide appeal and conquered multiple musical genres. Recently, both artists linked up with choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez and contributed to his Latin dance-inspired Zumba fitness program. “You see my stage shows, you see me flying through the air, backflips, doing all kinds of stuff. Zumba for me is natural, because it’s exercising and dancing without feeling it,” ‘Clef told MTV News last week at the Zumba Fitness convention in Orlando, Florida. Zumba was conceived by the Colombia-born Perez in the 1990s using dance to promote physical health. Combining musical elements like hip-hop, samba, salsa, meringue, mambo and even a bit of belly dancing, Perez’s program has grown into one of the hottest fitness crazes in gyms across the world. The Fugees producer partnered up with Zumba, and now his single “Historia” has been included as an official Zumba track that instructors use to teach their classes fitness through choreography. Pitbull’s “Pause,” a track from his recently released album Planet Pit, is also part of the Zumba playlist. “The way Zumba has done it is taken all those things that maybe we’ve all learned from different countries and put it into a form where it’s global now,” Pit told MTV News. “Same thing we’ve done with music, so that’s why I think they both ride parallel and they coincide.” During last week’s convention, both Pit and ‘Clef performed for 7,000 Zumba instructors, who moved in sync with the dancers onstage to specific Zumba choreography. “I’m up there and I’m rocking and 7,000 instructors are doing the exact moves to a song that I composed. I can’t even explain to you what that feels like,” Wyclef said. “That’s incredible.” While a rapper getting down with a fitness program may seem strange to some, Pitbull insists that the Zumba vibe is infectious. “It’s not someone looking like, ‘Man, what’s Pitbull up there doing exercise?’ ” he said. “Nah, you go up there and you’re like, ‘Man, I need to be a part of that.’ ” Jean agrees, pointing out that Zumba’s many cultural elements adds to its strength. “If it’s hot in Brazil, it’s hot in Afghanistan, it’s hot in Jerusalem, it’s hot in Flatbush [Brooklyn, New York]. It all should be on that one CD and we all should be able to rock with it,” he said. “And that’s why I’m into the Zumba movement.” Have you ever tried Zumba? Let us know in the comments! I know there has been a lot of set photos and videos coming out of the Spider-Man set, but this is one worth watching. It features Spider-Man swinging through traffic on wires. It’s actually kind of cool to see an actual human being flying through the air, as opposed to a computer generated superhero. Can’t wait to see what this looks like in the film. What Physics Says About Smooth Balls

It’s probably not all that surprising that this year’s World Cup has had its share of controversial goals, controversial offside calls, controversial foul calls, and controversial foul non-calls. A bit more surprising is the controversy caused by the tournament’s ball. Adidas created the Jabulani especially for the South African World Cup. It’s made from thermally bonded panels, instead of the traditional 32 panels of pentagons and hexagons. That makes it a lot smoother, but has given the players fits. “You might think if you make a ball very, very smooth, it will fly through the air better than a ball that is rough,” says John Eric Goff, chair of the physics department at Lynchburg College and author of Gold Medal Physics: The Science of Sports. You might think that, but you’d be wrong. “As the air goes around a sphere, or one of these sports balls, it forms a little layer near the surface of the sphere called the boundary layer,” says Goff. A rough surface makes that boundary layer break down at lower speeds. “And what that means is the drag force on the ball, the air resistance, goes down slightly,” he says. With only eight panels, you might think the Jabulani would be much smoother than a traditional ball, but you’d be wrong. Adidas has added grooves on the Jabulani that make up for the missing seams. Still, there seems to be less drag, less air resistance on a Jabulani when it’s traveling very fast than on a traditional ball. But more difficult than speed for player’s to get used to is what’s called the knuckling effect. This is when the ball starts behaving erratically because the boundary layer is breaking down at different places around the ball. “There is an ideal speed for the maximum knuckling effect,” says Rabindra D. Mehta, chief of the Experimental Aero-Physics Branch at the NASA Ames Research Center in California. For a traditional soccer ball it’s around 30 miles per hour. But for the Jabulani, it’s more like 40 or 45 mph. So it’s flying more erratically at faster speeds. Incidentally, despite what you might have seen in blogs or newspaper reports, NASA has not investigated the Jabulani. Mehta says he and some colleagues did a demonstration of the aerodynamics of flying objects for local school children, and used the Jabulani as an example. “There’s a lot of media coverage with all sorts of crazy headlines claiming NASA is doing this and that. We’re not doing anything,” says Mehta. “We just wanted to demonstrate soccer ball aerodynamics to children.” That may be so, but it’s hardly a headline grabber. added by: TimALoftis

Pedal-Powered Porsche Turning Heads, Very Slowly

The Newest Hotspot in NY: Some Dude’s Apartment

Beatrice Inn and the Jane Hotel were closed by prissy neighbours. Downtown stalwarts like Lit and the Box face constant scrutiny from the city. So the newest hangout for celebrities (not to mention strippers and transsexuals) is a random apartment. Mike is from Rumson. He lives in a reasonable-sized studio/loft downtown somewhere. His decor is sparse; the former dance studio is painted battleship gray with a large L-shaped couch around a coffee table, which has a copy of Wine Spectator magazine on top. There are Phish and Wilco posters, abstract paintings and a Yucca plant. His wireless password is Nirvana1. Over the last couple of weeks Mike’s apartment — it has no other title — has hosted rockers like Guns’n’Roses and Sebastian Bach of Skid Row and the soul singer Daniel Merriweather. An after party for the third anniversary of the Box ( where a transsexual threw up on Susan Sarandon ) came complete with boxers, debutantes, strippers and models. Promoters from Avenue, 1OAK and Greenhouse bring their crowds here in a steady stream, for pre and post club debauchery. As many as 150 people have crammed into the space. It happened because Mike has worked in the restaurant industry for nearly a decade. While developing a new nightclub project over the last few months he accumulated some fairly unorthodox nightlife friends — who eventually started hosting impromptu parties at his place. “I get text messages and phonecalls whenever anyone wants to bring crew through,” he explains. You enter the building through a red door — the buzzer is broken so you have to call someone inside to let you in (there are rumors that Mick Jagger fell at this hurdle last week). You walk past a trash can, up some rickety, black-painted stairs and turn left. During the evenings, ashtrays and bottles are filled with cigarette butts and thick smoke wafts through the air. There is no smoking ban here. The neighbors in the six story building are either at the parties or don’t care about noise. Unconstrained by licensing laws, the parties tend to go until sunrise — or until the last of the booze is gone and CIA analysts and starlets are strewn across the floors and couches in unfeasible positions. Over the next two weeks, along with the usual crowds, a high-end New York fashion house will have a party here, and an artist will host a reception for a major exhibition. Mike is mostly happy about the development. But it’s not all harmonious. Mike keeps his expensive whisky and wine collection in an unlockable wooden cabinet. Inside are several $500 bottles of Opus One Cabernet. He estimates that $5000 of whiskey has been sneakily consumed since his apartment turned into an unexpected hotspot — despite the hardest door in New York. He gets particularly upset when guests give it away to mysterious unknown women who sometimes turn up, invited by someone. “I’m like dude she’s probably a hooker, don’t give her a $50 glass of MacAllan.” In the same cabinet is Mike’s pickle collection — he’s been collecting and making pickles for about three years. It has remained mysteriously untouched. “This one,” he said, on a recent afternoon, holding up a jar of green, unripe tomatoes in spiced brine “is my favourite because my mom grew the grape tomatoes herself.” Journalists from the New York Post , NBC , and the New York Times have been through. “But everyone seems to be sitting on it, keeping it to themselves,” said Mike. And we’re not mentioning Mike’s full name, or the location, or running any pictures that might give away either, so as not to ruin perhaps the last refuge for New York debauchery in the era of smoking bans and wealthy neighbors who expect perfect quiet downtown. “No one is here, and this doesn’t exist,” said one regular as he reached into the cabinet for a nip of Glenfiddich 21-year-old whiskey, on that recent afternoon. “There will never be a Tweet sent from this apartment.”
