Adele Has ‘Trained Hard’ For MTV’s Musical March Madness

Our 2011 tournament begins March 14, but Adele is ready to go — even if she doesn’t like sports. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/Getty Images Last year, when the selection committee was assembling the field of bands for our inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, British belter Adele was left out — an omission that, at the time, seemed somewhat forgivable, considering she was basically off the grid, holed up in Malibu to begin work on the songs that would shape her chart-topping 21 album . Of course, this year, it would be close to blasphemy not to include Adele in the field of 64 acts that will compete for the MMM trophy . Not only has she conquered the world with 21, but she worked with Rick Rubin on the record, and that dude most certainly rocks, which makes her a shoo-in for the 2011 tourney. But, as we learned Monday, Adele will face a tough road to the championship. Rock titans Linkin Park have already promised to bring “total dominance” to the 2011 MMM tournament — we’ll unveil our entire championship bracket Monday, March 14 — and, as it turns out, Adele doesn’t seem to know the first thing about college basketball, which is where this entire idea came from in the first place. “I don’t like sports!” she laughed. Still, she’s willing to give it a try. So we asked her: Just how has she been preparing to take down the likes of Linkin Park in the 2011 Musical March Madness tourney? “I’ve trained really hard,” she explained. “I’ve worked really hard this whole season, leading up to the release of this record.” Of course, she followed that boast up with an uncontrollable fit of laughter, but it bears mention that, with an armload of Grammys , a #1 album and fervent fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, Adele definitely has a shot at shocking the world this year, especially since fans determine all the winners in our tournament. And, really, if she does manage to come out on top, can you imagine what her acceptance speech would be like? MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM … but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011

Dave Grohl Goes DIY Route For Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video

New clip premieres Thursday on MTV, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video Photo: RCA By now, you’ve probably heard Dave Grohl sum up his directorial body of work as having “lots of hair” (while, at the same time, remaining strangely “waxed”). But despite that assessment — and his work on the Foos’ brand-new “Rope” video , which premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and MTV.com — you’d probably be surprised to know that Grohl doesn’t really consider himself to be a director at all. “I’m not a director. I don’t even know how to use the equipment, but it’s fun to try,” he laughed. “[And these days] any kid can do exactly that and have a million people watch it. That’s awesome.” He’s talking, in part, about the video for “Rope,” but also his shot-on-VHS quickie clip for another Wasting Light song, “White Limo,” which was filmed in just six hours on an old handheld and has since gone on to eclipse the 1 million-view mark on YouTube. To Grohl, they’re basically the same thing: proof that, in this day and age, bands don’t have to break the bank to make a video. They just have to have a killer idea (and maybe a cameo by Lemmy too). “It’s nice now that there’s not as much importance put on videos as there was in the past. People used to spend, like, $5 million making a video. You think people do that now? They don’t,” Grohl said. “They get a VHS camera, and they make a video in six hours, and today, over 1 million people have watched ‘White Limo,’ the video we made with a VHS camera. And it’s cool. Anybody can do that. That’s f—ing rad.” The Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions via Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos). Related Videos Gearing Up For The Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video Premiere

‘American Idol’ Finalist Pia Toscano Plots Her Strategy

Cover of the Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You’ secures her spot in top 13. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s easy to think big when you’re the underdog. And that’s definitely the position New Jersey “American Idol” auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night’s post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show. “I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back,” she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. “But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.” After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13. Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” Jackson told her. “That’s how you do it!” Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased Toscano. Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. “I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.” Toscano will have to prove that she’s more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week. ‘American Idol’ Elimination Episode Crushes TV Competition

‘Idol’ puts up biggest non-sports Thursday ratings numbers since 2007. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler holds up his swear sign on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Simon who? Perhaps putting to rest any fears that “American Idol” would nosedive without iconic judge Simon Cowell, Thursday night’s first elimination episode of season 10 put up some stellar numbers for the singing competition. On a night when most of the competition on rival networks consisted of reruns (including, count ’em, six episodes in a row of “The Office” on NBC!) after the vaults were emptied last month during sweeps, “Idol” raked in 25 million viewers to win the ratings crown. In fact, the impressive numbers for “Idol” gave Fox the most-watched non-sports Thursday night number of any network over the past four years. The two-hour extravaganza, which not only shaped the top 10 , but also featured six performances by singers vying to score three wild card spots — not to mention the debut of judge Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” music video — was a 29 percent increase of last season’s first elimination night, according to Billboard With an 8.1 rating in the 18 to 49 demo, numbers were also up 13 percent over last Thursday’s “AI” episode. As you might expect, ratings climbed during the pivotal final half-hour of the broadcast, going from 25.96 million between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 26.66 million for the final half-hour. The good ratings news bodes well for the start of live competition next week, when new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will have to finally show their stuff during two real-time broadcasts a week after charming viewers during the season’s pre-taped episodes. ‘My Life As Liz’ Star Reveals Link To ‘American Idol’ Winner Kelly Clarkson

‘Idol Party Live’ guest Liz Lee went to same high school as Clarkson and says ‘there’s a trophy case dedicated to her.’ By Kelley L. Carter Liz Lee Photo: MTV News So would Liz Lee, the star of MTV’s popular series “My Life as Liz” ever audition for “American Idol”? Not a chance. Lee was a guest on MTV News’ brand-new weekly interactive online series, “Idol Party Live,” which kicked off on Thursday night (March 3) after the live results telecast of “American Idol” . The reality-TV star, who joined our “Idol” expert/host Jim Cantiello and EW.com “Idol” writer Annie Barrett, said she’d be too terrified to try out. But Lee made an interesting revelation on the live stream. The Fort Worth, Texas, native hails from the same small town as season-one “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson. “Kelly Clarkson went to my high school. I didn’t know her. I think my sister was friends with a friend who knew her. They’re all friends with someone who’s acquainted with her. There’s a whole trophy case dedicated to her,” Lee said. And who are Lee’s favorites so far this season? She’s leaning toward the quirky, nerdy types, she said, but has her eye on one contestant in particular: Casey Abrams . “I like the Seth Rogen-y, quirky, [guy],” she said. “Like, I would hang out with this guy. I would play video games with this guy. He’s like my friend Sully. He’s a Sully. It’s like a complete transformation. He’s cute, nerdy, quirky Seth Rogen, and then he turns into this Antonio Banderas, attractive, mysterious thing. It’s incredible — on a dime.” “Idol Party Live” airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, immediately following the “American Idol” results show, and Cantiello and a special celeb guest will be on-hand to do a post-wrap on all things “Idol.” They’ve even promised some karaoke! Drake And Lil Wayne’s ‘Miss Me’ Video To Premiere Thursday

Portions of the clip, which debuts at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, were filmed before Weezy began his prison sentence. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne and Drake (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Drake ‘s “Miss Me” video, featuring Lil Wayne , is set to premiere Thursday on MTV at 8 p.m. ET. The clip was recorded in two sessions: one featuring Lil Wayne before the rapper turned himself in to start his yearlong prison sentence and another more recently in July as Drake put the finishing touches on the visual. The video is Drake’s third overall from his debut album, Thank Me Later, following “Over” and “Find Your Love,” both of which were directed by Anthony Mandler (Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna). Earlier this year, Drake spoke with Sway prior to the kickoff of his Away From Home Tour and talked about his collaboration with Weezy. “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” he told MTV News. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” Originally, the song was slated as a collaboration between Bun B and Drake. But Wayne, perhaps with his then-impending jail term in mind, heard the record and wanted to join his prot
