U2 Postpone 360 Tour As Bono Recovers From Back Surgery

Frontman ordered to recuperate for at least eight weeks, pushing 16 North American tour dates to 2011. By Gil Kaufman U2’s Bono Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The good news is that after Friday’s successful emergency back surgery, U2 singer Bono was discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University Hospital in Munich on Monday. The bad news is that in order to recover fully, the 50-year-old singer (born Paul Hewson) is under doctor’s orders to start a rehabilitation and recuperation program that will keep him sidelined for at least eight weeks, forcing the postponement of the band’s 16 North American 360 Tour dates until 2011. According to a statement from tour producer Live Nation, the concerts, which were to kick off in Salt Lake City on June 3 and run through a July 19 show at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Stadium, have been pushed to an unspecified date next year. “Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve,” explained Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt, one of the singer’s doctors. “On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery.” The surgeon who performed the procedure, Professor Joerg Christian Tonn added, “Bono was referred to me by Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt late last week with a sudden onset disease. He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. The ligament surrounding the disc had an 8mm tear and during surgery we discovered fragments of the disc had traveled into the spinal canal.

‘Idol Gives Back’ Raises Nearly $45 Million

‘American Idol’ charity event featured performances by Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas and Carrie Underwood. By Gil Kaufman Alicia Keys performs on “Idol Gives Back” on Wednesday Photo: Fox Thanks to performances by Carrie Underwood , Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Sir Elton John, Wednesday night’s third “Idol Gives Back” charity event raised almost $45 million for a variety of charities, according to figures provided by Fox. The two-hour-plus show raised funds for U.S. and international charities including the Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children’s U.S. Programs and the United Nations Foundation. In addition to gripping taped packages featuring the show’s four judges and host Ryan Seacrest visiting charitable organizations, stars such as Jennifer Garner, David Arquette, Morgan Freeman and Annie Lennox appeared in segments spotlighting the work of some of the designated organizations. The fundraising figure was slightly below the previous totals for the show, which brought in more than $70 million during its inaugural year in 2007, when Underwood, Fergie, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day performed, and $60 million in 2008, which featured Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Jordin Sparks and Mariah Carey. The event took a year off in 2009 due to the economic meltdown. “Once again, I am over overwhelmed by the generosity of the AMERICAN IDOL viewers, our sponsors and our special benefactors. I am so thankful to all of the celebrity guests and performers who appeared Wednesday night to support IDOL GIVES BACK” said “Idol” creator Simon Fuller in a statement. The $45 million figure is likely to go up when the totals are in from the iTunes store, which will donate net proceeds from the sales of the top seven finalist performances to “Idol Gives Back.” A select number of performances from Wednesday night’s show will also be featured in the iTunes store. Also performing on the show were Jeff Beck and Joss Stone , the Black Eyed Peas and Annie Lennox, who unveiled a touching new song about the struggles of underprivileged children entitled “Universal Child.” Among the actors, comedians and dignitaries who pitched in were President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Victoria Beckham, Wanda Sykes, George Lopez, David Cook, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, and Bill and Melinda Gates. Donations are still being accepted online at AmericanIdol.com and by telephone at (877) IDOL-AID (877-436-5243; toll-free). Green Day Contest Winners Rave About Surprise Show

Winners of MTV’s ‘American Idiot’ contest got big surprise at end of musical. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Nick Neofitidis Green Day perform on stage at “American Idiot” on Broadway on Thursday. Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, winners of MTV’s “American Idiot” contest were not only treated to a great show — but a surprise mini concert by Green Day , with the band playing “American Idiot” and “Basket Case,” too. So, all in all, it was a pretty great night. “I think I had heart failure! It was the most amazing experience,” contest winner Fallyn Ruzzi told MTV News following the show. “I mean, the play was great, and then Green Day played songs, too!” Ruzzi was just one of the 300 lucky winners, who flocked to New York’s St. James Theater hours before the performance was even scheduled to begin, waited in line to pick up their tickets to the musical, and then got to witness a post-show performance by Green Day, who took the stage and blasted through “American Idiot” and “Basket Case.” It took most of the audience completely by surprise. “We had heard Green Day weren’t even going to be here,” Ruzzi said. “It was amazing when they came out!” But what did Ruzzi — and other winners — think of the show itself? Well, as might expect, they were blown away by the production. But, like most hard-core Green Day fans, when they first heard the band was taking “Idiot” to Broadway, she had her doubts. “I didn’t like the idea of Green Day coming to Broadway at first — I thought it was a bad idea,” Ruzzi said. “But then I heard the songs from the Berkeley Rep [performances] and I just fell in love with it.” Echoing those sentiments were Ruzzi’s friend — and fellow Green Day enthusiast — Toni Ann Graffigna, who was also skeptical of the album coming to the Great White Way, but, after seeing the show, she’s now firmly a believer. “I wasn’t that crazy about the idea at first, but it’s Green Day, you gotta give it a chance,” she said. “The whole show touched my heart. I would see it every day, if I could. I almost cried … I’d recommend everyone to see it, even if you don’t like Green Day, just come out and see it.” Related Videos Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ On Broadway Related Artists Green Day
