Source: Ambe Williams / Ambe Williams Mykal Kilgore has the kind of voice that makes you shout during Sunday service. The tone of it is rich and soulful and with ease, he transitions through rifts and runs making any song he sings a melodic experience; an effortless talent he honed performing in the church choir as a youth. Kilgore gained the confidence to follow his dreams while entertaining a group of classmates, one day, in school. “I would sing with my friends at lunch and one day a group of ‘cool guys’ came over and demanded me to sing them something. I started singing Killing Me Softly and they went crazy,” he explained. He felt “accepted and special.” “I also saw that there was something to singing that makes everybody come together. I wanted to be a part of bringing folks together.” Under the tutelage of Pose star Billy Porter , the Florida native eventually moved to New York where he pursued a career on Broadway ( Motown the Musical , The Book of Mormon , Hair). While Mykal thrived on stage, his passion for singing was bursting at the seams. He released his debut R&B album A Man Born Black on September 6. “I wanted to do something audaciously authentic,” says Kilgore. “I didn’t want to release music until I knew I had something clear to say. I’m so secure in my point of view right now.” The 10-track body of work, according to his website, “is an exploration of faith, loss, the stumble and spills on the way to maturity, and the beauty of hope and love.” The freshman debut showcases Kilgore’s songwriting ability while serving as an ode to the classic R&B structure. Produced by Jamison Ross, A Man Born Black embodies sounds from beloved artists like Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Sade and Laila Hathaway. “My hope was that if I could be real about my life and my story through the writing that it would make the song relatable to all people,” he explains. “There are basic things that I want and I use the album to explore these things. I want more love in the world, more respect, more honesty, and more grace.” Kilgore describes A Man Born Black as his “baby.” He laughs when asks what song is his favorite. “You’re making me pick my favorite child?! I think Let Me Go is the song I find myself humming in the shower these days, but maybe by the time I shower tomorrow it’ll be My Heart! I love Let Me Go , because it grows with me everyday. It changes and matures with each listen.” Kilgore set out to give fans an experience that evokes an array of emotions. “ I want fans to feel respected when they listen,’ he says. “I give them my best and that means that the music, the lyrics, the vocals all work together to give an experience that warrants multiple listens, tears, hand claps, toe taps, and their LOVE! I want all of that.” Listen to A Man Born Born Black , here. Tori Roloff is so very close to becoming a mother for the second time. She’s due to give birth next month, you guys. How exciting, right?!? So then… why is the Little People, Big World star actually feeling so down at the moment? The veteran reality star, who has been very open in regard to the challenges of this latest pregnancy, took to Instagram on Monday and opened up once again. She explained why she’s thrilled, of course, that she’s so close to meeting her impending daughter. But, well… “The last few days have really been a struggle for me. This last stage of pregnancy has hit me hard. I get so frustrated not being able to do things on my own,” she wrote to open a caption to the gorgeous photo below. What does she mean, exactly? Tori continued as follows: “I carried 6 towels up the stairs this morning to do some laundry and have been winded ever since. I’ve never been good at asking for help and these days that’s all I ever do.” Tori is carrying an actual human being inside of her womb. We’re pretty sure she’s doing plenty of work these days, but we’re also pretty sure millions of women around the world can relate to her right now. Concluded Roloff in this message: I know this is a time to be selfish and slow down but it’s so hard to sit around while my husband works and my 2 year old wants attention. I constantly feel serious FOMO. I know it’s all worth it and I’m doing such an important job but I can’t wait to tie my shoes on my own again. So very relatable, right? It must be difficult for young Jackson to understand that his mother just can’t be there for him in all the typical ways at the moment. Tori and Zach are due to welcome a girl right around Thanksgiving. Just over a month later, Audrey and Jeremy Roloff will welcome a boy . And then some time after that, Amy Roloff will marry Chris Marek! Indeed, it’s a time for some major milestones for this family and we’re just appreciative that they let us celebrate along with them. Tori, meanwhile, continues to earn our admiration for her honesty. Two months after her pregnancy announcement, the TLC star admitted opened up about how self-conscious she was feeling. “I’m not sick (anymore) and I haven’t had any complications (thank the Lord),” she wrote on social media at the time. Roloff then added: “However, I have had a harder time accepting my body this go around. I’ve gotten bigger a lot faster than I did with Jackson and I’ve become a lot more insecure… “It’s been hard to really enjoy this pregnancy because I’ve let my own body image issues get in the way. Us as women are so badass. Like we can grow babies. “And I know I need to give this up to God right and be thankful for this gift, and I’m trying, trust me.” Hang in there, Tori. We all love you! (@theislandiva) on Aug 11, 2019 at 2:45pm PDT Wash and go’s have been my go-to for the summer. It allows me to bring moisture to my hair and in this hot weather, the last thing I want to do is weigh it down with a wig or weave. Many Type 4 women stray away from wash and go’s because of lack of curl definition and most importantly, shrinkage. Felicia Leatherwood stopped by Hello Beautiful to share details on how to achieve a wash and go that will turn heads! First off: there is nothing quick about this style. Leatherwood warned, “It’s gonna take at least 30 minutes.” So this isn’t the style to try when you are running late for work in the morning. The problem is that most naturals, when doing a wash and go, they just slap the product on top of the hair. Leatherwood shared, “The most important part is the sectioning of the hair.” Most naturals aren’t taking the time to section their hair in the shower and apply their products correctly. Leatherwood continued, “The outcome of the style is the sectioning and the hydration of the hair.” If sectioning seems tedious, don’t fret, Leatherwood educated, “If you section your hair from the front to the back and then ear to ear, you will move through it so quick!” Section your hair in four first, then divide each section. Beauties, you MUST section the hair or else you will miss hair. Leatherwood continued, “When you divide it (your hair) into fours, I like to do the shingling method.” She shared, “Imagine if you’re gonna flat iron your hair with the fingers. No matter what your texture, 3 or 4, your hair will start to form to it’s true texture.” Not all products work for Type 4 hair, “If you use a product that sits on top and it’s not penetrating, that product may not be the product for you. It needs to melt into the hair, especially if you have water, it should go easily into the hair.” Leatherwood revealed another wash and go tip. While you do want your hair completely drenched, “Have a t-shirt to help dab your ends.” Why a t-shirt over a towel? “A towel is meant to extract water. A t-shirt is made to insulate you. Then use your diffuser!” Beauties, do you have a must know tip for your Type 4 wash and go? Share in the comment section! Source: Prince Williams / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood is rife with the typical drama. A1 discovers that Lyrica left him again, but denies hooking up with a girl he met on a plane. He also claims he doesn’t know where his son is because she won’t respond to his phone calls…as if he doesn’t have Lyrica’s mother’s info. Anyway, that is how the episode begins and Lyrica and A1’s drama will be what it is until they decide to be adults and have a real productive conversation, but that doesn’t happen in this episode. However, K. Michelle was the impetus for an interesting conversation about country music. It’s a conversation that has been reignited by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” As we know, the Yee Haw Mafia were mad at the fact that “Old Town Road” was considered a country song and as a result, it was removed from Billboard’s country music charts. Then he got an assist from Billy Ray Cyrus, who is undeniably a country artist and who also happily joined Lil Nas X for the “Old Town Road Remix” so, bloop. You can read about that saga here. Before “Old Town Road,” Beyonce faced backlash because she was scheduled to perform “Daddy Lessons” at the Country Music Awards. She still performed the song despite the Yee Haw Mafia being big mad, and she had help from the Dixie Chicks. The haters still hated, but let’s be real, this hate and this push back is because country music is stereotypically known as a White genre. The Yee Haw Mafia thinks it belongs to them but they’re sadly mistaken. Enter K. Michelle. She was recently a guest on Jason Lee’s Hollywood Unlocked , and that incident where she was on stage somewhere in Nashville telling the audience that she can out-sing any White country singer came up again. She mentioned that she was triggered because that particular night was country music night at the venue, and when she tried to get up on stage and sing someone told her that it wasn’t her night. That was code for, “A Black girl couldn’t possibly be singing country music.” Now, K. Michelle is messy and loves attention, but hearing her explanation for why she said what she said actually makes sense. It was presumptuous for that person to say what they said. But guess what? K. Michelle is among the many Black people who are fans of country music, even with the Whitewashing that has taken place. And I bet a lot of you didn’t know that there’s a huge country music scene in the Caribbean . I have been to a few karaoke nights in Barbados where country songs, sung by Black locals, reign supreme. All of my Bajan homies (I’m not Bajan but have visited the country enough to have friends there) mentioned that country music is big in the Caribbean, periodt. I have also seen this in St. Lucia, where my mother-in-law is from. So, yes, Black people like country music. We created it. Yes. We created it. I don’t have much time to go into all of the details because it really is a long complex story, so I’m going to keep this as short as I can. Growing up, I grew up mostly listening to hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. When I got to college I began working as a broadcaster for my school’s radio station. They started all the newbies off with the blues because it was the least demanding shift. Part of my job was to announce songs and drop knowledge about the blues. That’s where I learned about how country music came to be. It stems from the blues, which stems from work songs sung by slaves. Black people are some of the most creative people on the planet. For Black Americans, a lot of that creativity was born out of necessity. They had many coded ways to communicate with each other through the use of song and dance. They sang what were known as work songs as a way to pass the time and ease the pain of their awful predicament. They also used work songs to sneak diss the master. Seriously. They would be on the field singing about getting revenge on a lover but really, that “lover” was code for master. Blues is often about pain and what goes around comes around. Get it? What you do to me will come back around to you. It’s brilliant. You can learn more about this concept via the Netflix documentary, Devil at the Crossroads . Anyway, work songs birthed the blues and the blues also spawned hip-hop, folk, jazz, and wait for it…country music. The banjo is a commonly used instrument in country music. It has been a commonly used instrument amongst slaves because it’s straight out of West Africa. The problem is, appropriation is wicked. In the early days, talented Black country music artists were shut out from getting major opportunities while White artists with more access began to discover the genre, copy Black pioneers, and blow up based on stolen work and privilege. Black artists also often didn’t really own their music because many of them signed with corrupt financiers and record labels who would sometimes give their music to White artists or wouldn’t even put them on their own covers. There are a lot of layers to what caused the shift in country music fandom, but it happened, and Black people moved on to other genres. Again, this isn’t to say that Black people stopped liking country music, but Black artists have been abused, blatantly copied, and shamelessly erased. So, if we’re going to talk about the Yeehaw Mafia trying to tell Black artists what country music is and who country music belongs to then we need to tell it all because clearly, people don’t know their history…or pretend to not know it as a way to disassociate from the messed up things their ancestors may have done. Frankly, America can thank the slaves, who built this joint for free, for country music, if not most of its pop culture, including cowboy culture (because one in four cowboys were Black according to the Smithsonian ), especially when it comes to music and dance, and that’s that on that! There were other moments throughout tonight’s Love and Hip-Hop where Apple Watts, K. Michelle and even Misterray touched out the fact that Black people invented country music. They weren’t that eloquent about it but we got the point. However, there’s only so much they could say in such a short amount of time. Missterray even stated that, “If we accept Micky Munday doing hip-hop then they should accept K. Michelle doing country.” Eh…kind of, but again, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Plus, country music does belong to K. Michelle and any Black person who wants to claim it. It’s literally in our DNA. There’s one thing K. Michelle said in the episode that isn’t exactly true. She said that no Black woman has charted in country music. Valerie June is a contemporary country music artist who has charted and has a massive following. I tweeted about Valerie June and then got put on to Mickey Guyton , who I hadn’t previously heard of before. And then of course, there are men, like Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish, and Ben Harper, who have been putting it down for several years. So, we are present and accounted for. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying country music and definitely don’t let anyone tell you that “Country music is for White people.” Cuz it ain’t. Tuh! If you are interested in learning more about the history of country music and the shift that took it from Black to super White then check out this interesting NPR article . You can also learn more about work songs via this article by the library of congress. And if you have beef with anything I wrote then take it up with history and yo’ mama. She has also performed in critically acclaimed off-Broadway productions and is about to launch a cabaret act. Years before she pressed send on her submission to be featured in New York Fashion Week Nicque Marina envisioned herself as a star. “I’d done some modeling when I was younger I did theater and stuff when i was in high school. It was more like print stuff, like way back in the 90s ,” Marina told Hello Beautiful , in an exclusive interview about what happens when a dream refuses to be deferred. Source: Soils Puoane / CurvyNoire The model and singer sought an education that brought her to unlikely places and tucked her talent right along in her suitcase. “I joined the military mostly out of necessity ‘cause that was the only way I was gonna go to college. So I went to the Air Force Academy because they gave me a full ride and I just kept on performing even though I was in the Air Force . I just kept on seeking opportunities and I never let that go.” Serving in the Air Force gave Marina a chance to sharpen her skills and pick up some new ones. I worked for air force entertainment. I was in a group it was a traveling show of Air Force members and we performed for other Air Force members around the world and so yea we were pretty much required to be in makeup all the time and look like Miss America all the time. But we also we were the load in and load out crew. I was in charge of constructing the stage and overseeing that and so we were doing all this heavy labor. We were screwing things together, we were doing a lot of heavy lifting and we had to be in makeup all the time. We were in heavy makeup all the time we had to look pristine and perfect while doing all of this real rough stuff.” The strenuous experiences prepared her for what many models have learned while enduring the realities of fashion week. “You have to be pleasant and smiling all the time, even though you’re sleep deprived and tired and you just don’t wanna smile anymore.” View this post on Instagram Minneapolis was real, but time to get back to work in The Greatest City in the World. We were in Kuwait, Jordan, Djibouti, Qatar and United Emirates quite a few places.” It pushed her physical and spiritual abilities to the limit, and forced her to expand her ideas of womanhood . “It was a struggle to keep your femininity and also do all these really rough jobs, but I think it gave us a better sense of our femininity. Like to be able to feel empowered to look pretty and dance, and sing, and everything but also be there right alongside the guys. You know throwing things into the truck and putting set cases together setting up lights and everything it made no difference and so I think that was really cool.” She found strength as apart of the group but sadly she did not find true community there even after returning to the United States . “I’ve been in North Dakota for a long time and there’s not really a lot of diversity there.” View this post on Instagram Trying to make this monster migraine loom sexy A post shared by Nicque Marina (@nicquemarina) on Nov 9, 2017 at 8:13pm PST Marina remained engaged with media sources that catered to black women including Madame Noire and Hello Beautiful when she could and soon she saw an opportunity to comment with the outlets offline through a model search opportunity. “I didn’t expect much to come of it I just sent an application and said okay we’ll see what happens,” she shared. “I’m a reader of the site I follow MadameNoire on Facebook and I read a lot of their stuff day to day and I come across their traffic site quite often and I just happened to see that and I decided to go for that. I think it’s really cool highlighting all these different women some that we’ve heard of a little bit and then some we haven’t heard of just learning about their stories the unique things that they’ve had to overcome and their unique journey because there’s no one journey to success.” “It was really it was really cool to be around Black women again and like so many beautiful, beautiful, confident, women! The energy was palpable and it was really refreshing to be in that environment,” she said about her experience at CurvyNoire. Maui Bigelow and MadameNoire gave her an experience that she was missing while in uniform. “I haven’t been able to do that in a really long time.” Sitting on the smaller end of the plus-size spectrum, she wasn’t sure she would be selected. “I’m not the largest or curviest person especially compared to those models but I’m definitely heavier than I had been before.” Engaging in a space dedicated to body positivity, where she was celebrated for her beauty meant alot to her after being criticized for gaining weight. Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard are proving once again that they do not play by their family’s rules . Of course, because we are everyday, ordinary citizens, we support their rebellious behavior. But someone, anyone, please go get Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar a wet cloth! As many Counting On fans know, because of the family’s strict religious background, Jim Bob and Michelle have very intense rules set in place for their 19 children. And these rules are no joke. Besides no hugging before marriage, no celebrating Halloween , and no dancing, they are also expected to not further their education by going to college. While most parents get angry or frustrated at their child for not wanting to attend school, Michelle and Jim Bob’s parenting skills are rather different and very outdated. They believe that their homeschooling is enough to get the job done, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if they didn’t draw the line at learning outside of their walls. It’s honestly sad that Jim Bob and Michelle are so committed to raising their children by these weird standards that they’re willing to jeopardize their children’s futures. But when it comes to Jill and Derick Duggar, well, it actually sounds like they may want what’s best for their kids! According to a new confession by Jill’s husband, their children may not be following their unconventional path of learning! In a new post on Instagram, a fan asked Derick if he and Jill’s sons, Samuel and Israel, will head to college one day, to which he responded, “Probably.” Derick’s college statement surprised many fans, mainly because Jill is very open up about how much she loves homeschooling her two boys . “Even when I was looking at homeschooling curriculum (yes, Israel [only] just turned three but I’m just excited!), I was reminded of all the fun things my mom did with us kids to help make learning fun!” Jill said in a May 2018 post. She added that she is always reminded by her mom in some way, whether it be cooking, gardening, singing, organizing, or teaching. But luckily, it sounds like she won’t be as strict on her children as her mom was on her, and her 18 siblings. Derick’s thoughts on education may have recently changed since the controversial Duggar-in-law decided to attend college last year. He is enrolled in a three-year program at the University of Arkansas School of Law and he is very open about his experience. “Loved spending some quality time with my oldest son, who accompanied me as I wrapped up some stuff on campus today,” Derick captioned a photo of Israel inside of a library, adding #futurelawhog. Radar reported that Derick decided to go back to school after he and Jill got kicked off the family’s hit TLC show for his homophobic comments regarding Jazz Jennings . Jill, according to Radar , is working as a midwife for the time being. We can only hope that Derick and Jill continue to bend the Duggar family rules for the sake of their family maybe turning out somewhat normal; besides, we would love to see their kiddos start a new family tradition! You know, one that allows you to make friends, connect with the world, and well, learn things other than the bible. Unless, of course, their TLC show is still going strong. Wow, that’s a terrifying thought. View Slideshow: Jill Duggar Encourages U.S. Wives to Rail Their Husbands Many, Many Times Per Week
Last month, Javi Marroquin and Lauren Comeau broke up after he was caught cheating on her in the couple's Delaware home. Adding insult to injury was the fact that Javi barely made an effort to conceal his infidelity, hooking up with his side-piece while Lauren was asleep upstairs. But hey, at least he used to be more stealthy about his cheating! At least that's the claim being made by Kailyn Lowry, who says that Javi has been hooking up with other women since the time when Lauren was pregnant with his baby. We're guessing Comeau is starting to have some regrets about getting back together with Javi so soon! Here's what happened: 1. Past and Present If anyone can empathize with Lauren’s plight, it’s Kailyn. Lowry used to be married to Javi, and she says he cheated on her repeatedly over the course of their brief marriage. 2. Shady Baby Daddy Javi and Lauren welcomed a child back in November. Shortly thereafter, they got engaged and bought a house together. 3. Thrown Away That all came tumbling down when Lauren opened her bathroom door and caught Javi hooking up with a woman who belongs to the gym that he owns. 4. What a Scene To make matters worse, Javi and Lauren’s house was full of guests at the time. The situation escalated so quickly that Marroquin wound up calling the police to have his sister removed from the premises. 5. Kail Gets the Call One person who wasn’t on hand for this debacle was Kailyn, who was at home sleeping — at least until her phone started to ring. 6. A Different Perspective Kail opened up about the incident during a recent episode of her Coffee Convos podcast — and her commentary came as a major surprise to some fans. View Slideshow

Source: Chicago Tribune / Getty California Health Officials Advise Against Vaping And E-Cigarettes The vaping industry is under fire by health officials and California is taking a hard stance against the latest smoking craze . According to LATimes , health officials in the state are urging the public to quit vaping until they can determine exactly what effects the vapor has on the lungs and body. “We are seeing something that we have not seen before,” said Dr. Charity Dean, California’s acting public health officer, in a statement. “There are numerous unknown factors at this time, and due to the uncertainty of the exact cause, it is our recommendation that consumers refrain from vaping until the investigation has concluded.” The fear is that the ingredients inside the liquid capsules, both nicotine and THC, that make vapor may be toxic and cause extreme damage to the lungs. “People are getting sick and some are dying as a result of vaping,” Gov. Newsom said in a statement Tuesday. “Californians are encouraged to stop vaping until health officials fully understand what’s causing this public health crisis.” To date there have been 530 reported cases of injuries and 7 deaths related to e-cigs. Not that smoking is ever good regardless of the substance, but maybe the old school way is *better* than the unknown electronic way for right now.
