H&M Responds To Criticism Over Young Black Girl’s Ad Appearance, “That’s What We Were Going For.”

Source: SOPA Images / Getty Oh H&M . The Swedish based company is back under fire again after an ad appeared online with a young Black girl’s natural hair looking unkempt. The disheveled ad was blasted by celebrity hairstylist  Vernon François , who shared the photo on Instagram and noted that he sees “situations like this happen time and time again. And it’s got to stop.” “It’s essential that we have a conversation about this photograph from the  @hm_kids campaign,” François wrote. ” Before I begin, I do not have the facts, nor have I seen any statement by #H&M or the team who worked on this. This post is just an assessment based on all my years of seeing situations like this happen time and time again.  And its got to stop. This beautiful young girl’s #kinky hair appears to have had very little to no attention yet all of her counterparts have clearly sat in front of someone who was more than capable of styling other hair textures. My heart breaks imagining yet another girl from my community” View this post on Instagram It’s essential that we have a conversation about this photograph from the @hm_kids campaign.  Before I begin, I do not have the facts, nor have I seen any statement by #H&M or the team who worked on this. This post is just an assessment based on all my years of seeing situations like this happen time and time again.  And its got to stop. This beautiful young girl’s #kinky hair appears to have had very little to no attention yet all of her counterparts have clearly sat in front of someone who was more then capable of styling other hair textures. My heart breaks imagining yet another girl from my community sitting in front of a mirror being ignored by the team around her, left to her own devices because someone didn’t know how to handle her texture. As if that’s not bad enough…. Prior to this campaign appearing this photograph will have been seen and APPROVED by countless ‘professionals'. Lets say conservatively 50 people. It’s breathtaking to me that not one person looked at this shot and had the same reaction that the internet seems to be feeling since the campaign broke.  THAT IS AN ISSUE.  We must do better.  Our girls, our young women deserve better.  Let this be a moment of learning. #Education is key #wehavetodobetter #vernonfrancois #Ignorance #blackgirlmagic #allhairisgoodhair A post shared by Vernon François (@vernonfrancois) on Sep 19, 2019 at 9:33pm PDT Since the outrage, H&M has responded to the backlash but not in a way that you would expect. The discount retail giant revealed that all of the children were photographed the same way and that the idea was to capture them in their natural state after school, which left many to argue that it wasn’t H&M’s fault for the child’s appearance, but the parent’s. “We are aware of the comments regarding one of our models for H&M Kids. We truly believe that all kids should be allowed to be kids. The school-aged kids who model for us come to the photo studio in the afternoon after school and we aim for a natural look which reflects that,” H&M said in a statement to Yahoo . Although the family of the young girl in question has yet to respond, the fact remains that while all of the children in the subsequent ads look tousled, African-Americans have yet to accept and truly embrace 4b and 4c textured hair. Even when you look at our own ads for hair care and promoting the “natural” look, most women chosen have textures that are still very Eurocentric. It’s no secret that women in the natural community have often voiced their disdain over not feeling adequate with their natural textures, due to 3b and 3c being the heavily promoted look-so the question isn’t who’s to blame, it’s are we really being honest about our own feelings regarding textures with tighter coils? As Bustle points out, 4b and 4c hair have long been viewed as the “bad hair grade”, but many had hoped with the explosion of the natural hair movement in the early 2000s that we would rewrite the narrative, but as we can see by our own words during the controversy, we still have a long ways to go. H&M AT IT AGAIN They wrong for that. Where the child mama? I hope she sue them for public humiliation, defamation of character, and discrimination They could had a stylist touch this child hair. Pathetic pic.twitter.com/egxNJza1Sz — Shawda' Love (@Shawdaaaa) September 20, 2019 “There was a period in time that I hated my hair,” Charlene Akuamoah, a stylist said in her interview with the publication . “I thought it was so difficult to manage: It was rough, the curls were too tight, it didn’t look ‘presentable,’ it was always dry, and I felt like I looked better with straight hair. I [thought] that my hair had to be tamed.” Sentiments echoed throughout the complaint of the child’s appearance in the ad. While H&M is undoubtedly tone-deaf regarding race in advertisements, this time the fingers we are pointing should be aimed at the real perpetrators-us. Please people, let’s uplift this little girl! She’s killing her H&M shoots with her natural 4C hair. Lil sis is serving us poses and she looks happy and beautiful #Queenin pic.twitter.com/8z92Gi51rF — insta:msyasmine (@msyasmine_) September 20, 2019 I don't blame h&m, i blame the interwoke folks whos heroes are internet goddesses with 4c buns and TEXTURIZED edges. — ike slimster (@iKeslimster) September 21, 2019 Why y’all keep singling out the one black girl from the H&M ad? ALL the kids’ hairstyles were messed up. How come the other children aren’t getting this backlash? Hair texture got y’all twisting for excuses like pretzels. But anywho- pic.twitter.com/ksludbLayc — Tenille Clarke (@tenilleclarke1) September 20, 2019 There is a little Black girl whose face is floating around the internet who should be celebrating landing a modeling opportunity for H&M right now. Instead she’ll have to see commentary over how her hair should’ve looked better. — Negrita (@HustleAndFro_) September 20, 2019 Hopefully, the reality and exposure of the tainted way we still view our natural selves will help us change the narrative in our own community. Representation matters, especially when you see it loved among the very people you are representing to the world.

Aron Eisenberg, Star Trek Actor, Has Died at Age 50

Aron Eisenberg, who played the fan-favorite role of Nog in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” has died at the age of 50 .  According to E! News , the actor’s wife, Malissa Longo, shared early Saturday morning that Eisenberg was hospitalized in critical condition, without further explanation.  Later that night she shared the tragic news to Facebook that he had passed away. “It is with extreme regret and sadness to announce that my love and best friend, Aron Eisenberg, passed away earlier today,” she began her post. “He was an intelligent, humble, funny, emphatic soul. He sought to live his life with integrity and truth.” “He was so driven to put the best he had into whatever work was put before him,” the post continued. “He lived his life with such vigor and passion. He was like a breath of fresh air, because I knew I would always hear the truth from him. Even if I didn’t want to hear it and even if the truth was inconvenient.” Longo then went on to explain in detail just how much of an impact her husband had on her life. “He made me (and still makes me) want to be the best human I can possibly be, because he always strove to be the best human he could be,” she explained. “His resilience and willingness to learn was and is an inspiration.”  Eisenberg and Longo got engaged back in 2016, and it was in her heartfelt message that she reveled they had eloped back in December after the holidays. “We were hoping to have a big shindig in celebration of our nuptials, but had to wait to save up the money,” she wrote. “While, our marriage, on paper, was a short one. Our hearts had been married for far longer.” “I will forever be thankful for the time we had to love each other. Five years felt like a lifetime, in the best possible ways,” she shared. “There will never be another light like Aron’s. The beauty that he was and the legacy he leaves behind is beyond words. I love him dearly and will him eternally.” “At the moment I’m not sure how to do life without him… He is and always will be My California,” Longo concluded her beautiful message. Eisenberg had battled some serious health issues throughout his life, including the fact that he was born with one defective kidney which stunted his growth. He was on dialysis until age 13 and underwent a kidney transplant at 17, he also underwent another transplant in 2015.  Besides his unfortunate health conditions, Eisenberg went on to play the role of Nog, the first Ferengi to join Starfleet, on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , which aired from 1993-1999. He later played Kazon on Star Trek: Voyager and he also appeared on shows such as The Wonder Years , Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and Tales From the Crypt.  In recent years, however, he spent his time working as a professional photographer.  Many of his co-stars and friends mourned his loss, including Armin Shimerman, who played Eisenberg’s character’s uncle Quark on the Star Trek series. “He was a man of conviction and enormous sensitivity and the best of humanity. [My wife] Kitty and I grieve for Aron, his boys, and Malissa. Flight of angels my friend… you will be missed. There are no words…” he wrote. Garrett Wang, who played Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager , posted a video of Eisenberg at a fan convention where he also promoted a link to a GoFundMe page, created to help raise money to cover funeral costs. Aron is survived by his wife and his two sons, Christopher Eisenberg and Nicholas Eisenberg. We send our condolences to his friends, fans, and loved ones. May he rest in peace. Yikes: Everyone Involved In The Kevin Hart Car Crash Is Lawyering Up For Imminent Lawsuit

Source: Newspix / Getty Kevin Hart And His Passengers Are All Getting Lawyered Up It looks like Kevin Hart and the two people in his car that crashed on September 1 have all gotten themselves lawyers as everyone involved is expecting a big lawsuit. According to reports from TMZ , sources with direct knowledge say the driver–who sustained serious back and chest injuries–has an attorney, as does the passenger in the backseat, who sustained only a few minor injuries. Kevin Hart, of course, has a lawyer as well. Kevin is expected to be in the crosshairs of the other two people inside the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda at the time of the crash because the car was not equipped with any sort of safety harnesses or airbags. The argument here is that Hart should have worried less about keeping the car authentic and more about the actual safety of the vehicle, and not doing so constitutes negligence, on his part. The once driving the car could also be on the hook for both Kev and the backseat passenger, but that presumption is a little premature since the CHP is still investigating the cause of the crash. TMZ also reports that the company that customized the car for Kevin could also be looking at a lawsuit, for those same issues mentioned about safety above. The company is supposed to be the expert on cars, and even if Kevin wanted a custom job without safety harnesses, they should have refused anything that wasn’t safe for those involved, especially with a 720 horsepower engine. Law enforcement sources told the publication that CHP may lobby the California State Legislature to prohibit custom car companies from rolling out products without harnesses, regardless of whether the customer wants them or not.

Tekashi69 Continues Snitching: Cardi B Is a Violent Gang Member!

If you’ve been keeping up with the increasingly bizarre saga of rapper Tekashi69 — real name, Daniel Hernandez — you know the face-tatted rapper will soon present a considerable challenge to the fine folks at the Witness Protection Program. It all started back in November, when Tekashi was arrested for a list of crimes that seemed likely to put him behiund bars for the rest of his natural life. Fortunately for Hernandez, he had a plan to escape that unpleasant fate — snitching. And while his hip hop career may have been a disappointment, Tekashi has since proven himself to be the Jay Z of naming names. All this week, Tekashi has been testifying in the trial of Aljermiah “Nuke” Mack and Anthony “Harv” Ellison, who, like him, are alleged former memers of the Nine Trey Bloods. Hernandez says he met Mack, Ellison and other members of the Nine Treys on the set of his first music video. Apparently, he had the idea of making the clip for “Gummo” a gang-themed production, and within a few months, he was living the life himself as a full-fledged member of the gang. Or at least that’s what the Nine Treys told him. Over the course of his time with the gang, Hernandez shelled out more than $85,000 in protection money — but what he really needed protection from was his own security detail. Eventually, the Nine Treys kidnapped Tekashi, pistol-whipped him, and robbed him of jewelery worth more than $50,000. We guess it’s not surprising that he’s eager to squeal now that he’s facing life in prison as a result of his involvement with the gang. Tekashi has mentioned several other rappers during his time on the stand — identifying Jim Jones as a fellow Nine Trey and admitting to putting out a hit on rival Chief Keef. But no of his industry insider talk has garnered more attention than the claims he made yesterday abotu Cardi B. Tekashi claims that Cardi is also a Nine Trey, who — like him — used the gang as protection and enforcement early in her career.   “I knew who she was,” he said when prosecutors asked about Cardi’s alleged gang activity. “I didn’t pay attention.” Cardi has admitted in the past to involvement with the Bloods: “I used to pop off with my homies. And they’d say, ‘Yo, you really get it poppin’. You should come home. You should turn Blood,’” she told GQ last year. “And I did. Yes, I did. And something that — it’s not like, oh, you leave. You don’t leave.” But apparently, she draws the line at being lumped in with the ultra-violent Nine Treys. “You just said it yourself… Brin not 9 Trey,” Cardi tweeted on Thursday after catching wind of Tekashi’s allegations. “I never been 9 Trey or associated with them.” So his testimony against Cardi might not help Hernandez secure a lighter sentence — but he’s succeeded in making one more enemy on the outside.

Hidden Documents Reveal University of Texas Created Blueprint For Slowing Integration

Go here to see the original:

Source: dszc / Getty It has been more than sixty years since the American public schools became integrated, but hidden documents reveal that the University of Texas played an instrumental role in creating a blueprint to slow down the monumental progress. According to The Atlantic , hidden records in the university’s archive reveals the great length that Administrators went through to block the admittance of African Americans to the institution. In the documents, it’s revealed that the concept of standardized testing was introduced by UT as a means to block Black applicants after the proposal of utilizing a “gap year” or pushing for the attendance at neighboring HBCUs Prairie View A&M or Texas Southern University . “If we want to exclude as many Negro undergraduates as possible,” UT’s then Admission Counselor wrote, “The University would be in a position to plead that it is acting in good faith to bring an end to segregation, and it should have some bearing with the courts in an attempt to postpone the admission of Negro students at the undergraduate level.” The documents also show that a special committee was created to actively think of ways to keep African American students from being admitted while appearing to comply with federal law, their resolution-standardized testing. According to records, the committee noted that if the 2,700-person freshman class was admitted according to state population proportions, 300 would be black; before highlighting that white UT freshmen had significantly higher aptitude-test scores than incoming freshmen at three Texas black colleges. A standardized-test cutoff “point of 72 would eliminate about 10% of UT freshmen and about 74% of Negroes,” the committee stated in a footnote. “Assuming the distributions are representative, this cutting point would tend to result in a maximum of 70 Negroes in a class of 2,700.” “The historical record makes it clear that racism was a primary motivation in UT’s decision in the 1950s to begin testing applicants for admission,” Gary Susswein, a UT Austin spokesman told the publication. “Other explanations were given at the time, as standardized testing took root nationally and many universities moved away from open admissions to become more selective. But the ugly desire to keep out African American students was a major driver of that policy.” Although the University of Texas has worked hard to overcome their racist past, the remnants of that racism continues to live on. Many people of color have argued for years regarding the racist intent behind standardized testing. In 2015 ,  Washington State Senator Patty Murray stood on the Senate floor and called standardized testing a civil-rights issue. “We know that if we don’t have ways to measure students’ progress,” Murray said. “If we don’t hold our states accountable, the victims will invariably be the kids from poor neighborhoods, children of color, and students with disabilities.” Educators point out that the current tests used to measure student progress holds schools and teachers accountable but doesn’t measure actually learning and retention well at all. While the practice of testing has continued, many schools are moving to other ways to admit students without it. Today, at least three-fourths of UT’s freshmen from Texas continue to gain admission through the use of standardized testing, while other applicants receive what the university calls a “holistic review”  that takes race and ethnicity into account along with grades, essays, leadership qualities, and numerous other factors, including standardized test scores.

Josiah Duggar & Lauren Swanson Share Baby Registry With Fans: Buy Us Stuff, Y’all!

If you’re a Counting On fan, then you’re probably already aware that we’re in the middle of a full-blown Duggar baby boom . No fewer than four Duggar couples are currently expecting, and Jessa Duggar just welcomed her third child in May. Of course, the bulk of the public’s attention is being paid to the couples who are expecting for the first time — couples like Josiah Duggar and Lauren Swanson. Back in May, the Duggars announced that Lauren is pregnant . The news was met with an even larger tidal wave of encouragement and enthusiasm than usual, owing to the fact that Swanson suffered a miscarriage in February. So despite the fact that half his freakin’ family has a kid on the way Josiah and Lauren are very much in the spotlight right now. In fact, more than any other time since their wedding, the couple is at the center of fans’ attention. And it looks as though they’re seeking to cash in on the opportunity. Yes, Josiah and Lauren are now participating in one of the most controversial Duggar traditions by posting their baby registry online so that fans can buy them items from the list. “Thank you for visiting our baby registry! We are so thankful and blessed for our sweet baby girl that’s on the way,” reads a greeting on the couple’s website. Most of the items are standard — such as diapers, baby monitors, and nursery decor, but there’s also an option to simply purchase Amazon gift cards for Josiah and Lauren. As for the nursery, Josiah and Lauren are expecting a girl , but they’ve encouraged fans not to go overboard on pink baby furniture. “As far as [the] nursery,” they wrote, “we are going with more of a gender neutral theme (black, white, wood).” Not surprisingly, the reaction to fans has been less than ebullient: “I may be wrong but TLC and their personal appearances [probably] pay them well,” wrote one visitor to the website. “Donate to a charity in their name [instead].”  The Duggars have been down this road before, such as when they took flak for posting Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell’s baby registry on several websites related to family news and events/  “Very, very uncool. … There are ways to circulate this info to the guests. This is a gift solicitation for the FANS,” wrote one fan at the time. Many others echoed the sentiment, and the registry was eventually taken down. We guess Josiah and Lauren didn’t learn from that debacle. But hey, we guess it’s less shady than when Derick Dillard and Jill Duggar begged fans for cash , straight-out! Maybe the Duggars are very slowly learning how to not seem so desperate! View Slideshow: Josiah and Lauren Duggar Reveal Gender of First Baby (EEEEK!!!!!)

Amy Roloff and Chris Marek: ENGAGED!! It’s Finally Happening!

A Little People, Big World star has some rather huge news to share: SHE’S ENGAGED! Amy Roloff has confirmed to People Magazine that she and Chris Marek have finally agreed to marry, several months after the Internet started to wonder in earnest just when this special development might take place. “I’m excited, I’m so surprised, I’m thrilled!” Amy tells People , adding to the publication: “I never in a million years thought I’d be getting married again, but I also hoped for it! Now that it’s happening, I couldn’t be happier or more excited.” Marek popped the major question at dinner on Wednesday night, a day after Amy’s birthday. He rarely talks to the press, but such a special occasion calls for a special opportunity, prompting Marek to say the following to People of Roloff and their engagement: “I was very nervous! It had to be a heart shaped diamond because I knew that’s what Amy wanted.” Mere days ago, social media users took a close look at a photo of Amy and wondered whether she and Marek were engaged. These same social media users had posed the same question numerous times before, figuring a proposal simply had to be in the works. Amy was previously married to Matt Roloff, with whom she shares four children: twin brothers Jeremy and Zach, 29, daughter Molly, 26, and youngest son Jacob, 22. She filed for divorce in 2015 after 27 years of marriage and recently opened up in her memoir about Matt at least having had an emotional affair toward the end of their relationship. Still, the exes remain very close, co-starring on Little People, Big World every season and even living on the same farm property until just a few months ago. Amy has been with Marek for about three years. In a December of 2016 episode of her family’s TLC reality show, Amy told Molly about her single life and hitting it off with Marek. “I’m having a good time,” she said way back then. “You know, I had a couple of pool parties. I had, like, 40 people here. No, I probably had, like, 50 people here. “Then this guy Chris that I met, he came to the party, too. We got to talking and he invited me to go on a motorcycle ride. Oh, I’m having a ball!” Since this time, since they started to get serious, Amy has accompanied Chris on a number of motorcycle rides and trips; she has often documented these outings on Instagram. Despite her clearly strong feelings for Chris, Amy often pushed back on the idea of getting married for a second time. Why? Because she feared getting hurt again — and also because she formerly had some doubts about whether she and Marek could truly work. Speaking with her girlfriends about her relationship with Marek in 2017, Roloff confessed that she didn’t think she’d find love with someone of average height. “I just never thought someone who is average size would be interested in me,” she said in a TLC clip from from that tear. “I just really want him to never question or doubt the relationship because I’m a little person…” “I just have a good time. I have fun with him. I never thought I’d be dating as a grandma, and it’s nice to experience that and be with someone.” Marek and Roloff just attended Jacob Roloff’s wedding last weekend. View Slideshow: Jacob Roloff Wedding Day: See All the Beautiful Pics! Their engagement news is merely the latest reason for this family to be quite excited for the year ahead: There will now be a wedding at some point… Tori Roloff is due to give birth around Thanksgiving… and Audrey Roloff is due to give birth in January 2020. So exciting all around!

Nike Gives Antonio Brown The Boot

Source: Boston Globe / Getty Antonio Brown ‘s NFL season of struggle , at least off the field, continues. Nike has dropped its sponsorship of the New England Patriots star wide receiver after allegations that he raped his former personal trainer. According to TMZ , a Nike rep confirmed that AB is “not a Nike athlete.” AB had a player edition shoe with Nike of its Tech Trainer that dropped back in February 2019 but has been wiped from Nike’s site. Brown vehemently denies raping Britney Taylor and maintains that any sexual contact was consensual. Nevertheless, Brown signed a 1-year deal with the New England Patriots worth $15 million, so he’s not exactly hurting for money. He still has to deal with those allegations, though. — Photo: Getty
