Scoop DeVille Is Crafting A ‘Futuristic’ Sound That’s All His Own

‘People are like, ‘What did you sample?’ I’m like, ‘Uriah Heep,’ ‘ Scoop says of mining rock collection for rap bangers. By Shaheem Reid Scoop DeVille Photo: Tokyo Sex Whale Records Behind the Beats: Scoop DeVille Frost is such a veteran, he’s an O.G. among O.G.s. Dr. Dre used to be his DJ back in the ’80s. And when Frost (originally known as Kid Frost) pioneered in 1992 with his Hispanic Causing Panic debut, his son, little Scoop DeVille was only 2 years old. In 2009, Scoop broke through himself by producing Snoop Dogg’s blockbuster “I Wanna Rock.” Everyone from Jay-Z to Ludacris eventually jumped on the track in various official and unofficial remixes. Then he gave Fat Joe two bangers in “(Ha Ha) Slow Down” and “No Problems,” and laced N.O.R.E. with the Flavor Flav-inspired “Nutcracker.” “I don’t see Scoop as a real young producer really,” Frost said, sitting next to his son in Scoop’s Los Angeles studio. “I see him more as an old soul that’s been in it for a long, long time. People are just barely finally discovering his sound, but man, he’s been harboring a fresh, fresh sound in him for a long time. It’s finally starting to sail now. It’s finally starting to leave port and people are starting to jump on it.” Scoop gives props to his pops for keeping music around him that would later influence his career. “That’s all I was around man,” Scoop says. “I was fortunate to not have that gang life and I got to be around the music and school. So I got to learn all of the hip-hop history and I got to meet a lot of these people who were hip-hop celebrities. Like the Eazy-E’s, Ice T, and Snoop and Dre and it’s like the list goes on, man. From people who were on the scene … everybody, there’s numerous people. I mean my music, just my hard drive and my brain is crazy: I have like classic rock. There’s a crazy record, it’s not just hip-hop, it’s like [other genres] because that’s what made hip-hop too” “I never really played that much rap in my house,” Frost smiled. Instead, Scoop, who also rhymes, picked up most of his hip-hop away from home. “I got to learn my own stuff to a point where I was writing my own lyrics and recording my own songs,” Scoop explained. “I would go back to a lot of old stuff. Lots of old-school records, ’70s funk, reggae, I mean, there’s so many, the Doors, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, all that. Led Zeppelin, Beatles — that [sound] was a big influence on me, just the way that their music sounds so monstrous. I would love to take that and incorporate that in hip-hop. So now I got records with Xzibit that got crazy rock samples in them and people are like, ‘What did you sample?’ I’m like, ‘Uriah Heep. You don’t even know what that is.’ That’s hard rock heavy metal back in the day, 60’s. And you know psychedelic, all that stuff. I love all kinds of music.” Next Wave of Flav : On 50 Cent : “I haven’t done anything with 50 yet. We just met. I worked with [Shady Records A&R] Riggs {Morales]. I was trying to get on Em’s project a while back. We got a lot of things in the works with them. We try to keep it cool with everybody. It’s definitely a new sound what we’re trying to do. I wanna have everybody involved at all angles. It’s good to see everybody come around. I definitely played them a few records. They’re not looking for anything like I’ve been doing. They’re looking for something real different. The records I’m playing for them are different, futuristic.” On Busta Rhymes : “I got a few records on this new album. When that comes out, it’s going to take the beat stuff to a whole ‘nother level. This record he has coming out, we did three joints for it. Oh my God, the sh– I gave Bus is ridiculous. I’ve met cats like David Banner and Swizz Beatz. They all got records on the album but they all say, ‘You got the craziest record on the album.’ ” On the Clipse : “That was amazing. When we were in the lab, we were going beat for beat. They were picking everything. It came to a point where they were like, ‘You’re 10 for 10.’ There was like 15, 16 beats and they were like, ‘We’re taking all these beats.’ That was dope because they get beats from Pharrell. That’s the number-one producer to me. Just to get that response from them and their management. That was a dope experience. They were a big inspiration for me making beats in high school.” On Raekwon the Chef : “Rae’s a real cool cat. We were in the lab until 3 in the morning listening to beats. He took records for a new Wu record, he took records for him and Ghost. He’s gonna put me in contact with Ghost. Rae is cool. I have a lot of records for him, a lot of real grimy records.” Hottest Streak Thus Far? He’s just getting started ladies and germs. Ke$ha Promises No Jazz On Her New Album

‘I wouldn’t say ‘mature,’ because that sounds boring,’ Ke$ha says about the sound of her next record. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Ke$ha’s Animal album was just released in January, but that doesn’t mean she’s not already thinking ahead to her next album, even if it’s royally screwing up her sleep schedule. “I’m always writing and kind of thinking of the next step. I’m still executing this record properly onstage, but the next record is definitely on my mind, and potentially in the works soon,” she told MTV News on Monday at the Casio “Shock the World” party in New York. “I was just in Tokyo and I couldn’t sleep. I woke up at four in the morning, and I had this idea — [for] the whole video and the track and the song and who I wanted to collaborate with — so I spent like seven hours making a really horrible beat on ‘Garage Band’ and singing and rapping into my computer.” Hmmm … that doesn’t sound very country to us. Still, on her new songs, Ke$ha is looking to push the envelope a tad, which means that she’s trying to move away from her hard-partying ways. Sort of. “I write all my own music, so [the album is] going to be honest,” she said. “And I definitely am not just laying around Los Angeles getting drunk with my friends anymore, so it’ll definitely be a little different subject matter, but it will still be fun and honest. I’m not done being crazy.” And while it’s still really early in the process, Ke$ha’s got plenty of ideas floating around for her new album … and she’s already got a pretty solid sense of how the album won’t sound. “I wouldn’t say ‘mature,’ because that sounds boring, that sounds like a jazz record, and that’s not going to happen,” she laughed. “You’ll hear about different things on it. I think there’s a great pop song in anything.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Ke$ha Related Artists Ke$ha

‘The City’ Season Finale: Whitney Faces A Tough Decision

Olivia makes a splash in Tokyo as season two comes to a close. By Amy Wilkinson Whitney Port in “The City” on Tuesday No-nonsense People’s Revolution founder Kelly Cutrone has been one of Whitney’s strongest allies in the fight to make her fashion line, Whitney Eve, a success. But during Tuesday night’s season finale of “The City,” Whitney had to decide whether she would remain loyal to Kelly or be lured away by a peppy, pink-wearing PR practitioner. Even though Kelly doesn’t actually work for Whitney, the young designer didn’t want to offend or blindside her mentor by accepting help from another agency, so she had a chat with Kelly to discuss her wooer, Alison Brod. “She does mostly beauty, right?” Kelly sniffed. “And she wears pink all the time.” Fashion choices aside, Kelly didn’t think the timing was right for Whitney to hire a full-time PR rep. “I think it’s early for you to do this,” Kelly advised. “You’re still at a place where you’re in very low production numbers. … I want the best for you.” Rather ironically, Kelly had these parting words for Whitney: “Watch out. Every fifth word from PR people should be scrutinized.” Meanwhile, with Olivia on assignment in Tokyo, Louise Roe stepped in to film Web videos of Elle ‘s 25th anniversary photo shoot. And while Keith, the editorial director for Elle.com, liked Louise’s style, he wasn’t quite sure she was the perfect fit to be the new face of Elle.com. “I think Louise is really good, but she is kind of announcing,” he observed. “I think it’s good for this, but we don’t need that treatment for everything. I just wonder, is Olivia more like the Elle girl? Olivia was certainly putting her best foot forward in Japan at the Tibi launch party. She gamely fielded questions at a Q&A session with a poise and eloquence we rarely see in her dealings at Elle (especially with Erin). Yet, Erin and Robbie’s assistant Seth didn’t think anyone back in the States had high hopes for Olivia’s Japan visit. “I mean, Olivia in Japan seems a little bit lost in translation,” Seth joked. “Olivia in America is lost in translation,” Erin replied with a laugh. Whitney decided to meet with Alison Brod in her pink office to discuss the possibility of working together. After scolding Whitney for not wearing one of her own designs to the meeting, Alison said that if she represented Whitney Eve, Whitney would have to swear in blood that she’d do everything she could to support the line. Though Whitney said she’d think about it, Alison began spreading the news that Whitney had dumped People’s Revolution, riling the already perturbed Kelly. “I don’t need to defend my agency against a girl who wears pink,” Kelly chided before kicking Whitney out of her office. Joe had some big news for the Elle staff upon Olivia’s return. Largely due to her spectacular success in Tokyo, Olivia was made the new face of Elle.com (garnering a hard-to-miss eye roll from Erin). But what’s to become of Louise? Don’t worry about her; she’s already got a hosting gig lined up in L.A. But will Erin remain at Elle, knowing she has to work even more closely with Olivia? Still undecided about her PR representation, Whitney asked embattled friend Roxy to meet her for a chit-chat, their first in quite a while. Roxy reminded Whitney that her loyalty was to Kelly, but Whitney didn’t seem entirely convinced. “I’ve been struggling with it,” she said. “I’ve been making a list of pros and cons. I don’t know what to do.” It looks like we’ll have to wait for the next season of “The City” to find out what she decides. What did you think of the season finale of “The City”? ‘Inception’: The Early Reviews Are In!

‘Leonardo DiCaprio finds the tortured center of his character,’ one reviewer writes. By Eric Ditzian Leonardo DiCaprio in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. Almost one year ago, the teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” hit the web. It featured acrobatic fight sequences, hallucinatory imagery, and left us with far more questions than answers. Just what the heck was this movie really about, anyway? In the months that followed, Nolan slowly peeled back the curtain to reveal peeks at his top-secret follow-up to 2008’s “The Dark Knight.” Now, with the movie’s July 16 release date approaching, “Inception” has been fully unveiled to industry insiders, and the first reviews are beginning to pop up online. Here’s what folks are saying about the flick. The Story “Leonardo DiCaprio plays Cobb, an expert in what the film calls extraction, the theft of secrets or information from the subconscious mind,” Todd Gilchrist wrote in Cinematical.com . After botching a job thanks to the intrusion of his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard), Cobb finds an unlikely opportunity for redemption from one of his former victims: Saito (Ken Watanabe), CEO of a flourishing multinational, offers him amnesty in exchange for planting an idea — known as inception — within the mind of Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), one of Saito’s competitors. Enlisting the help of teammates Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Ariadne (Ellen Page), Eames (Tom Hardy), and Yusuf (Dileep Rao), Cobb reluctantly agrees to the mission, only to discover that the mind’s defenses are more formidable than any physical threat he could face. Heist-movie plot details notwithstanding, the above description scarcely scratches at the surface of what’s in the film, and certainly reveals nothing of the deeper conceptual and thematic dimensions of its story.” The Look “Shot across four continents by Nolan’s regular d.p., Wally Pfister, and outfitted by production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, ‘Inception’ is easily the director’s most visually unbridled work,” Justin Chang wrote in Variety. “Its canvas stretches from the skyscrapers of Tokyo to the bazaars of Tangiers, from an amber-lit hotel corridor to a snowy mountain compound (a setpiece that plays like an homage to ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’). Pic has arresting effects and images to spare, such as the sight of Paris folding in on itself like a book or Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur performing a fight scene in zero gravity (the explanation for which is even more dazzling).” The Performances “DiCaprio finds the tortured center of his character, a man who is part thief and part spy and whose own guilt-ridden subconscious stands to destroy his chances of succeeding at the proverbial one last job,” Jim Vejvoda wrote in IGN.com . ” ‘Inception’ is sort of a companion piece in a way to ‘Shutter Island,’ the year’s other mind-bender DiCaprio thriller. Gordon-Levitt — who, like DiCaprio, was a child sitcom actor — continues to prove he’s one of the brightest up-and-coming dramatic actors with his turn here. And although she has less screen time than the rest of the cast, Cotillard shines as the film’s closest thing to a femme fatale.” The “Matrix” Comparison “[T]here’s a sort of ‘Matrix’ action movie vibe about the [marketing] campaign, and despite some wild visual moments in the film, I wouldn’t describe this as an action film at all,” Drew McWeeny wrote in HitFix.com . “There are action beats in it, but all of them are ultimately in service of the emotional journey that Dom takes in the film, and as a result, the stakes seem so much higher than they would if it was just another movie where people were chasing around some empty Macguffin. Everything in this film … cities folding in on themselves, buildings filling with sudden floods of water, gravity that stops working, reality fraying at the edges … ties back in to whatever happened between Dom and his wife Mal years ago.” The Bottom Line “Following up on such ingenious and intriguing films as ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Memento,’ Nolan has outdone himself,” Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter. ” ‘Inception’ puts him not only at the top of the heap of sci-fi all-stars, but it also should put this Warner Bros. release near or at the top of the summer movies. It’s very hard to see how a film that plays so winningly to so many demographics would not be a worldwide hit.” Are you excited to see “Inception”? Sound off in the comments below!
