‘Going Clear’ Author Lawrence Wright Says It’s Time For Tom Cruise To ‘Open His Eyes’ To Scientology

New Yorker writer,  Lawrence Wright appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe  talk show to discuss his new book,  Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief , and Tom Cruise quickly became the focus of the conversation. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author — who did some 200 interviews with current and former Scientologists, as well as other sources for his book — was in the process of  discussing  reports of “abuse and involuntary confinement” within its Sea Org unit — the equivalent of Scientology clergy, according to Wright — when  host Joe Scarborough brought up the Top Gun star (around the 6:20 mark of this clip). “Do you think Tom Cruise knows of these alleged problems with Scientology . And secondly, what’s in it for a guy like Tom Cruise, who has the freedom to do whatever he wants and chooses to stay in the church”. Wright’s response: “I’m glad you’ve put your finger on Tom Cruise, because I think he has a moral responsibility — he’s been the front pitchman for this organization for years. More people have heard about Scientology through him than any other person. There may be some willful blindness on his part, but if so, it’s time for him to open his eyes because he’s been selling this.” In the video, Wright points out that Cruise is “being treated very well” by church members. He even says they “hand-crafted a limousine for him.” I’ve asked Cruise’s spokeswoman if the actor would like to respond to Wright’s comments and will post them if they are forthcoming.  As you might guess, the Church of Scientology doesn’t have good things to say about Going Clear, and has called it an “Error-filled unsubstantiated bigoted anti-Scientology book.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Take Our Breath Away…Please! The Top 5 ‘Top Gun’ Scenes We Can’t Wait To See In 3D

Oh, Top Gun . The Sullivan to Rambo ‘s Gilbert, it cemented pop-culture love for Reagan’s aggressive foreign policy , established the late lamented Tony Scott as a successful director, and catapulted Tom Cruise to A-list status, where he has remained ever since. Now, 26 years after its initial theatrical run, Top Gun ‘s barely stifled masculine angst and jingoistic pro-military message (wait, isn’t that the same thing?) feel more relevant than they did in 1986. (I blame Dr Pepper Ten for that.) What the world clearly needs is a chance to experience the film’s many delights with fresh eyes. And now we can, as Top Gun is getting an IMAX re-release in glorious, unintentionally homoerotic 3D two weeks before the February 19 release of the two-disc Blu-Ray set. Gird your loins everyone, because at the risk of writing this thing off sight unseen, 2D films converted to 3D almost always look terrible. It’s particularly bad when the movie wasn’t filmed in a way that really benefits the 3D experience. Top Gun is action-packed, but it’s basically a drama with fast jets every 10 minutes or so. Maverick’s character arc — that would be Cruise — involves him getting past the guilt of causing his friend’s death, falling in love, and coming to terms with the legacy of his dead father. Although 3D might benefit the dogfights, will we really be better off seeing a sort of passionate, blue-lit love scene unfold as if we’d stumbled into the very bedroom where it took place? Of course we will! And personally, I can’t wait to see these other choice moments popping off the screen: 1. Tom Cruise flipping the bird at a Russian jet before performing a death-defying maneuver so he can escort a panic-stricken fellow pilot back to their aircraft carrier. Moral of the story: Maverick is a loose cannon, but he gets the job done. 2. The touching teacher-student romance between Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise, which includes sex and sexy motorcycle riding. 3. Anthony “Goose” Edwards’ tragic death as he’s rammed face-first into a cockpit window.

Suri Cruise ABANDONED by Tom, Magazine Claims

Suri Cruise hasn’t seen her famous dad in 48 days. Has he ABANDONED her, as this tabloid claims?? In reality he’s just working. Whether Tom Cruise has prioritized his movie career over his home life to the point where it’s hurt his three marriages is an open question, but “abandoned” is a strong word, given how he provides for Suri. There’s also the fact that … Katie Holmes left him . If by “abandon” In Touch means shoot movies in London, Iceland, New Orleans and New York for the past six weeks, then yeah. Sure. Bit of a stretch though, no? It’s true that Tom hasn’t been publicly seen with Suri Cruise in more than 48 days, since their vacation to Disney World on August 2, and yes, of course that’s sad. At the same time, many kids don’t have two parents at all, and Tom and Katie Holmes, who has primary custody of Suri, have always tried to put their girl first. By all accounts the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce was settled quickly, amicably and fairly for her benefit and each will continue to be involved in Suri’s life. Katie will be more so, but she has primary custody. This is just how some divorces work out; it’s hard to call Tom an absentee father under the circumstances.

Brad Pitt Says Hollywood $Millions$ ‘Don’t Work Now’

It is by far and away no secret that Hollywood compensation for a certain cadre of stars have been rocketing beyond the stratosphere for some time now, but one A-lister, in the form of Brad Pitt , says that the era of paychecks reaching into the tens of millions for some may be coming to a close. Both he and his partner Angelina Jolie have topped (or nearly so) the scales for their movies in the past decade, with Pitt garnering a cool $25 million per pic. Not bad, but almost a paltry sum when compared to Tom Cruise, for instance, which Forbes listed as commanding a cool $75 million in 2012. But Pitt says he thinks that the conditions for unbelievable sums (at least for the bottom 99.7 per cent) may be heading back down to the mere stratosphere. “Yeah, that thing died,” Pitt said when asked if fellow A-listers can still easily command a $10 or so million per movie, according to BBC . “That arithmetic doesn’t really work right now…that deal’s not flying these days.” Going further on the economics of Hollywood right now, Pitt added, “”It’s a really interesting time. A lot of the studios have been challenged because of the economic downturn as well, so they’ve been betting on bigger, more tent pole kinds of things. At the same time that opens up a vacuum for really interesting new filmmakers to come in.” Pitt debuted Killing Them Softly in Cannes and is a producer on the title that will head to U.S. theaters next month. But not all films will automatically bring out the masses simply because their idols are in them. Nearly two hours of staring at Robert Pattinson sans vampirism failed to bring out the legions of people who otherwise crave to hear any tidbit possible about the latest travails of their obsession’s personal life. Cosmopolis , for instance, has only cashed in at $5.3 million worldwide so far (and only just over $700K in the U.S. – ouch). “You take the roles for the roles,” said Pitt. “And you’ve just got to balance economics like everyone does.”

Nazanin Boniadi: Tom Cruise Wife Candidate Becomes Internet Fascination

Ever since Vanity Fair’s cover story alleged that members of the Church of Scientology vetted possible wives for Tom Cruise , Nazanin Boniadi has been in the spotlight. Little known if at all in the U.S., the Iranian-born, London-raised actress, whose friends call her “Naz,” has been referred to as the “Persian Audrey Hepburn.” Obviously it didn’t work out for Nazanin Boniadi, who’s appeared on General Hospital and How I Met Your Mother , and Cruise, who wed Katie Holmes in 2006. She isn’t quoted in the VF article, but director Paul Haggis (a known critic of the Church of Scientology) says that Boniadi shared her 2004-05 ordeal with him. Boniadi hit it off with him at first, but refused to indulge Tom Cruise in public displays of affection and was ultimately dispatched by Scientology higher-ups. From there she was sent to church headquarters in Florida, where she was punished and made to clean toilets with a toothbrush for speaking about Cruise. Reps for Cruise have denied the contents of the article, as has the Church, but not before it further fed into the firestorm over Scientology’s cult-like reputation. From the sound of it … Naz might’ve dodged a bullet on this one. [Photo: WENN.com]

Tom Cruise Wife Auditions Conducted By Church of Scientology Officials, Report Claims

The process of finding Tom Cruise a potential wife through the Church of Scientology was revealed in Vanity Fair’s October cover story by Maureen Orth. Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology head David Miscavige, led the audition to find a suitable new Mrs. Cruise after his divorce from Nicole Kidman. Actresses who were also Scientology members were called for the audition process held under the guise of “a new training film,” according to the article. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes , who were married from 2006-2012, met at some point after this; it’s unclear if she was also screened in this fashion. It’s pretty disturbing in any case if it’s even half true. Iranian-born actress Nazanin Boniadi, a strong candidate, passed the first stage of the audition process and then underwent a month-long preparation. After a makeover and signing an NDA, she was set up with Cruise in November 2004 … quickly realizing what her “very important mission” consisted of. During their relationship, she was audited and spent 2-3 hours purging any “negative thoughts about Tom.” Things went more or less well … for a time. Cruise started to have a series of complaints about her – read the full Vanity Fair expose for an explanation of what – and the relationship soon fizzled. Boniadi, who had moved in to Cruise’s home and shared his bedroom, was asked by his people to move out of his house. He never spoke to her again. After confiding in a Scientology friend about Cruise, she was ratted out. Allegedly, she was forced to scrub toilets with a toothbrush, clean bathroom tiles with acid, and dig ditches in the middle of the night as punishments for even talking about her relationship with the M:I-Ghost Protocol star to others. After that she was sent out to sell Scentology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics on street corners. Boniadi is no longer involved in Scientology. A representative for Scientology, obviously, denied the story.

WATCH: Scenes From Stillman’s Damsels In Distress Become Aitken’s ‘Weekend Lover’ Music Video

Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress is about to get some additional international mileage thanks to the release of the  official video for Victoria Aitken’s “Weekend Lover.”  The video for the song — whic hit No. 10 on the U.K. dance charts and is now catching fire in Germany — is composed entirely of scenes from Stillman’s movie about a group of trend-setting women (led by Greta Gerwig ) at a boorish East-coast college whose romantic entanglements upend their friendship and their lives. (“Weekend Lover” is featured on the soundtrack of   Damsels in Distress , which was released on DVD at the end of July.) “It’s weird how the story I tell in my song fits his film almost exactly,” Aitken told Movieline . “My song is about me as a damsel in distress.” The singer/songwriter, who is the daughter of former Conservative British Parliament member Jonathan Aitken,  wrote the track after a phone call with “You’re Beautiful” singer James Blunt during which she complained about the state of her love life. “I told him, ‘It’s a disaster. I don’t want to be a weekend lover,'” Aitken said. “And then I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s great.'” Aitken,  said that the video was put together by “Whit’s team and editors at my label, Black Hole Records,” which is also the home of superstart DJ Tiesto. The Londoner is also about to release “Wasting Away,”  a collaboration with reggae artist Spragga Benz that, she said was written in commemoration of  the partying in London and Jamaica that took place after Usain Bolt’s Olympics 100-meter gold-medal win. No stranger to tabloid attention, Aitken also told us that she has the perfect song should Prince Harry’s nude Las Vegas pictures scandal inspire a comedy movie, or even a music video: her single “Queen of the House.” “It’s how anyone can be queen or king of the dance floor,” she said. “Harry was king of the house in Vegas,” Aitken said.  “He looks great naked, and I can’t understand why the media is saying he embarrassed the royal family.  If anything, he’s glamorized them.” I’m inclined to agree.  I mean, didn’t I just see photos of Queen Elizabeth in a hoodie?
