Emmy Awards Prepare For Final Jay vs. Conan Tonight Show Cage Match

It seemed like the dust had finally settled around NBC’ s 11:35 P.M. time slot. Conan had been escorted off the Warner Bros. premises to circulate the continent on a comedy tour that turned out to be just as therapeutic for its host as for its audience members and Jay Leno resumed his Tonight Show perch as if nothing weird or backstabby ever happened. So by the time that Conan announced that he was abandoning network late night for TBS , it seemed like the two would never go head-to-head again… until we heard about this year’s Emmy ballots.

If you have ever fantasized about seeing Jay Leno do nude backflips, get excited because the Tonight Show host did just that — or his stunt double did — during a pre-taped sketch last night that featured a cat-crank ring and two special guest stars. Elsewhere on late night, Jonah Hill talked about his in-flight fight club and Jane Lynch talked about “whoring her cookies” for this week’s upfront events. But instead of receiving a foot rub from Jay Leno, she found herself giving an encore performance that had her singing, dancing, story-telling, avoiding scare-related death, and then surviving a bedroom role-playing joke from the host himself. NBC Accuses Conan of Lying to 60 Minutes, Inadvertently Paints Themselves as Heartless

Last Sunday, Conan O’B rien used his first contractually-permitted television interview in months to relive his traumatic Tonight Show shakedown. Scarred, Coco did his best to not badmouth NBC or Jay Leno outright, instead using phrases like “I would not have done that if positions were reversed.” In fact, the comedian only really lobbed two accusations NBC’ s way, allowing the rest of his heartbreak to go unspoken — er, spoken by his wife Liza. Unsatisfied, NBC sources placed an anonymous call this morning to clear up a few lingering issues.

Late Night Highlights: Mickey Rourke on Russian Prisons and Jon Favreau’s Clown Days

David Letterman was the only host last night to acknowledge Conan O’B rien’s heart-wrenching 60 Minutes interview — “I always say, if you can’t say anything nice about Jay, let’s hear it.” Unfortunately, no one else joked at Leno’s expense last night, not even the Tonight Show himself, who chose to gloss over his underwhelming Correspondents’ Dinner routine by just asking Kev if his parents enjoyed the show. It sounds grim, but there were some highlights from last night’s programming worth revisiting — all compiled after the jump.
