Black Eyed Peas Go For ‘Old-School Club Vibe’ At NYC Gig

Performance airs Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Fergie performs with the Black Eyed Peas at Terminal 5 in New York City Photo: MTV News The Black Eyed Peas are known for their over-the-top stage show, which includes fashions made from Legos or lasers and usually includes a very high production value. So when the group hit up the smaller Terminal 5 in New York City to tape a show, they decided they would focus on the music and not the antics. “Old-school club vibe, intimate, spontaneous,” Fergie explained of the gig, which will air Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. Her bandmate, Taboo, added that with such an extensive repertoire of tunes, “It’s hard choosing, but you know the ones,” he told MTV News before BEP took the stage for the high-octane performance. The band’s unspoken leader, will.i.am, said that every time they release a new track that explodes and becomes an undeniable radio staple (which for this group happens often), they have to adjust their live show to go with the flow of their evolution as a group. “Before we had ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ it was like, ‘We know we gotta play “Pump It” and “Let’s Get It Started,” ‘ ” will.i.am explained. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. You know, ’cause ‘I met a girl down at the disco,’ I just didn’t want to say that no more, lyrically. “It wasn’t like my best lyrically, but it was fun,” he continued. “It wasn’t lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger, but now ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is like ‘What?’ and when we perform it, in my mind, I’m like, ‘Where did that song come from?’ I can’t believe this is us, and look at all these people singing it like it’s theirs.” Don’t miss the Black Eyed Peas’ performance Thursday at midnight ET on MTV.

Lady Gaga Salutes Town That Made Her ‘Brave’ At MSG

Gaga shouts out Liza Minnelli, Marisa Tomei and a gay unicorn in the second of two hometown shows. By Vaughn Schoonmaker Lady Gaga performs at Madison Square Garden on Sunday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — “Tonight, in the town where the gays birthed me, you can be free!” Lady Gaga announced at her Monster Ball show Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. On this second night in her hometown, Lady Gaga was being filmed by HBO for her concert special that will air in early May. And though it wasn’t her first time playing MSG, she still felt the significance of headlining the venue. “I used to live 20 blocks from here, so I saw all those names go up on the marquis, and I always wanted to see my name up in those lights. “You made me brave, little monsters,” she informed her squealing fans of all ages, “and New York made me brave.” Liza Minnelli and Marisa Tomei were both in the audience, and Gaga asked for her monsters to cheer on the two women, who she said greatly influenced her. “I don’t lip-synch,” Gaga reminded the audience who was already quite aware of that impressive fact, considering all of the heavy dancing mixed with extended high notes. “I’m not going to waste your time watching some bitch lip-synch her way to an HBO special, especially not with Liza watching.” Gaga recently said in an interview that she would want Marisa Tomei, above anyone else, to play her in a movie. While performing all of her hits from The Fame and The Fame Monster, Gaga took plenty of time to speak to the crowd directly, and her witty banter had the room laughing every moment they weren’t cheering their lungs out. Someone in the audience held up a bright purple unicorn stuffed animal, and Gaga caught sight of it when flashing her disco stick flashlight around the crowd. “That is the most fabulous gay unicorn I have ever seen,” she remarked, as straight-faced as ever. “The only thing better than a unicorn is a gay unicorn.” The evening flowed seamlessly from the moment Gaga took the stage with her dark pop tune, “Dance in the Dark,” disguising her dozen or so costume changes with dazzling art videos. The videos often depicted Gaga in a pose or in extreme slow motion, creating the sense of a moving portrait, surrounded by driving club dance beats. Some of the images included tears of blood, neon-green vomit, gothic clothing and bondage attire. The show itself could be an installment at a high-end gallery. Gaga’s incessant devotion to LGBT rights was in full effect during her two hours on stage. She called a fan in the audience, Jimmy DiPasquale, who had made a generous donation to her LGBT youth fund, to thank him personally. At the end of “Alejandro,” while the beat continued to thump, two of her male backup dancers took the stage and made out passionately as the curtain came down. As Gaga drove the night toward her two encores of “Bad Romance” and new single “Born This Way,” she looked on the verge of tears and announced, “This is the last of five sold-out shows here, but I hope this song and this record bring us back here next year.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Madison Square Garden Performance Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga Tweets Lyric To Next Single, ‘Judas’

Second Born This Way single is a ‘very, very dark song,’ Gaga says. By Kyle Anderson Lady Gaga Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images The title track (and first single) from Lady Gaga’s upcoming album Born This Way is still laying waste to sales records, but the singer is already contemplating the album’s second showpiece. On Monday, just before she took the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden , where she was taping an HBO concert special, Gaga tweeted a lyric from “Judas,” which she already confirmed will be the second single from Born This Way. “I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, baby,” Gaga wrote on Twitter . During a conversation with Carson Daly on his radio show last week, Gaga described the song as a much darker entry than “Born This Way.” “It’s about always falling in love with the wrong man over and over again,” she explained to Daly. ” ‘Judas’ is a very, very dark song. It’s rad.” Rolling Stone recently got to hear six tracks from Born This Way , including “Judas.” ” ‘Judas’ is a classic Lady Gaga pop banger with three huge hooks, a thumping house music breakdown and a vocal part that borrows a bit of Rihanna’s distinctive cadence,” wrote Rolling Stone ‘s Matthew Perpetua . Gaga just kicked off the latest leg of the Monster Ball Tour, which saw her open in Atlantic City before tearing into the first of two Madison Square Garden shows (the second, which will also be taped for the HBO special, is Tuesday night). There is no release date set for “Judas” yet, but Born This Way is scheduled to be dropped on May 23 and the video for “Born This Way” should be appearing soon — at least according to another Gaga tweet. “Just finished editing Born This Way video!” she wrote shortly after tweeting the “Judas” lyric. “Announcement Soon!” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Madison Square Garden Performance Related Artists Lady Gaga

Quentin Tarantino Honored At Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Filmmaker receives inaugural Music+Film Award with some help from Ice Cube, Keri Hilson, Adam Levine and Tim Roth. By Kara Warner Quentin Tarantino receives the inaugural Music+Film Award at the 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images With brief yet genuine words of praise from former colleagues, a flashy movie-clip mash-up and a musical tribute in his honor, Quentin Tarantino stepped into the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards history books Friday night (January 14) after receiving the show’s inaugural Music+Film Award. Ice Cube started things off by telling everyone to hurry up and sit down so he could present before introducing an impressive clip reel that included Tarantino classics “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2” and “Inglourious Basterds.” Then, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine (who, along with his bandmates, was moonlighting as the show’s house band for the evening) hit the stage with his guitar for a performance of the “Dogs” musical number “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which doubled as a tribute to late Stealers Wheel frontman Gerry Rafferty . That was followed by a saucy version of “Son of a Preacher Man” by Keri Hilson. “Reservoir Dogs” castmember Tim Roth took the stage after Levine’s and Hilson’s performances to officially hand off the award to Tarantino, who was shown smiling from the audience throughout the tribute. Roth noted that no one deserves the award more than Tarantino and that he was happy to help “celebrate Quentin for using music so damn effectively.” Then the man himself graciously took the stage and talked about how he started filmmaking by hanging out alone in his room, playing records like Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser” and writing scenes to go along with them. “I’m kind of still doing the same thing right now,” he joked. What do you think of Quentin Tarantino’s use of music in film? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Unveils Polaroid Camera Sunglasses

Mother Monster also shows off portable photo printer and other gadgets from her ‘Grey Label’ collaboration during electronics fest. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga at CES 2011 in Las Vegas Photo: Steven Lawton/FilmMagic She’s adorned her shades with lit cigarettes and covered her peepers with jewel-encrusted spheres , but Lady Gaga’s latest pair of sunglasses has taken eyewear to stylish and tech-savvy new heights. The influential songstress revealed her yearlong “Grey Label” collaboration with Polaroid to a packed room and thousands of fans who tuned into the event via Ustream at the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, in Las Vegas on Thursday (January 6), and among the spankin’ new products is a pair of shades with cameras embedded in the lenses. Gaga, who took the stage nearly an hour after the publicized start time in a black corseted gown and wispy veil, showed off the innovative specs perched on a bronzed mannequin. Once turned on, tiny twin screens appeared in each lens, and Gaga explained that the futuristic accessories can snap photos and capture video, and are equipped with Bluetooth capabilities and a USB connector. Mother Monster also showed off a sleek, portable photo printer about the size of a clock radio that allows users to instantly print physical copies of smartphone pics using Bluetooth technology — although the device isn’t iPhone compatible. Gaga said the invention was inspired by seeing the legions of concertgoers thrusting camera phones in the air at her shows. She then demonstrated the nifty printer by snapping a picture of the assembled crowd of Gaga-ites and gadget heads — playfully barking, “Smile! You’re so f—ing famous! — and brandishing a glossy image minutes later from the mini-machine. According to a Polaroid executive, the product should be available in May. Gaga also introduced a suitably stylish and social media-friendly revamp of the classic Polaroid instant camera that she said would eventually allow photogs to directly share images on Facebook and Twitter. The product is slated to hit shelves around Christmas. The Gaga-approved gadgets cap off a year of tinkering at Polaroid, which began when the “Bad Romance” belter was announced as a creative director in January 2010. “I love the products, I’m so proud to be here,” Gaga gushed about developing the gadgets with Polaroid. “They honored me as a woman, as a creative director and they really let me [put my] hands in there and design this sh– myself.” What do you think of Gaga’s Polaroid “Grey Label” gadgets? Cher Recalls VMA Meeting With Justin Bieber

‘I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby,’ pop legend says of meeting Bieber while wearing racy ’80s outfit. By Jocelyn Vena Cher at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Cher turned heads at the VMAs back in September when she proudly showed up in the same barely there outfit she wore for her 1989 “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. However, the 64-year-old pop icon admits that she began feeling a bit inappropriately dressed when she was introduced to Justin Bieber that evening. “I thought, ‘I’ll do myself in a decade’, and that [body stocking] was the closest thing I had. And then someone said, ‘Will you take a picture with Justin Bieber,’ and I said, ‘Sure’, not knowing who he was,” she recently recalled to British talk-show host Graham Norton. “And then this child, who came up to here [my chest], and I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby.” Of course, Bieber wasn’t the only up-and-coming star Cher had the pleasure of meeting that night. She also had the honor of holding Lady Gaga’s meat purse when the latter singer took the stage to accept a Moonman in the now-infamous meat dress. “Well, I wear that every night in Las Vegas, so I just whipped it out,” Cher said recently to MTV News of her scanty VMA getup. “I didn’t have time to think of, like, getting a costume. So I had it and thought it would just be fun to just take off on myself, not knowing I was going to be handling the meat purse. “But, you know, there’s those moments you just remember [forever],” she added. ” ‘Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?’ ” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s VMA Night Behind The Scenes At The 2010 VMAs Related Artists Cher Justin Bieber
