Drake Has ‘Good Taste,’ A$AP Rocky Says After Co-Sign

New York MC is ready to take his music worldwide, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts A$AP Rocky Photo: MTV News A$AP Rocky has been pegged as hip-hop’s next big thing. That phrase might get attached to someone (e.g. Drake, Wiz Khalifa) or some group (see: OFWGKTA) every few months, but A$AP is the first “next big thing” to come out of New York in a while. No offense to French Montana, Fred the Godson or anyone else, but very few up-and-coming New York rappers have garnered as much love on both hip-hop and alternative blogs. And they certainly haven’t been featured in The New York Times — especially with just a handful of songs. When MTV News caught up with A$AP Rocky in New York’s Lower East Side, he said he had his sights focused on bigger things than the Big Apple. “I live here, and New York raised me, New York made me, so at the end of the day, it’s all love for New York. But I appeal to everybody. I want to appeal to people in West Bumblef—, Germany,” A$AP said. “That’s what it’s all about. I can appeal to anybody. Anybody that was raised in poverty, middle class, low middle class, day-to-day regular things, they can relegate to me, because I speak that trill sh–.” A$AP Rocky — born Rakim Mayers — said he started rapping at age 8 but didn’t really start taking it seriously until his late teens/ early 20s. The Harlem MC said, at first, he didn’t know if he was Kanye West, Kid Cudi or what, but once he found himself artistically, other people started to really appreciate his work. He also credited his three main producers — ASAP Ty Beats, SpaceGhostPurpp and Clams Casino — with developing his sound. Ty Beats has produced Rocky’s two most recognizable songs: “Purple Swag,” a sizzurpy ode to Houston hip-hop, and the boastful, melodic “Peso.” Clams Casino rose to fame producing for Lil B the Based God, and Miami’s SpaceGhostPurpp, owner of hip-hop’s best name, is the producer Rocky goes to for his “trill sh–.” “I think my sound is a sound that was inspired by all hip-hop from different regions, cultures [and] times,” he said. “My sound is everything mixed into one. It’s the future. Basically, you don’t have to be limited anymore, and you can sound how you want to sound. That’s natural for us.” “A$AP” is an acronym and almost a surname adopted by Rocky’s crew, and he said it can mean a variety of things, from Always Strive and Prosper to Assassinating Snitches and Police, but Rocky liked Acronym Symbolizing Any Purpose. While most people wait on the release of his debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP, on Halloween, he’s already been added to Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. Rocky said he was honored by a co-sign, not only because it was Drake, but because he truly respected the Toronto MC. “He’s in a position to where if he co-signs somebody, it’s valid, and he’s a real lyricist, and he’s got good taste. I mean, look at his music. Therefore, when he comes to listen to people like me and he gets inspired and then wants to take us out on tour, it just shows you he’s a real dude.” Have you checked out A$AP Rocky yet? Drake Promises ‘Larger-Than-Life’ ‘SNL’ Set

Toronto MC tells MTV News he’ll perform brand-new Nicki Minaj duet ‘Make Me Proud’ on Saturday; teases a ‘special guest.’ By Rob Markman Drake Photo: MTV News Drake only burst onto the scene in 2009, but in those two years there isn’t too much that the Toronto MC hasn’t done. By tomorrow night, Drizzy can cross a “Saturday Night Live” appearance off of his list of accomplishments because, for the first time, the Young Money soldier will appear on the show as the musical guest alongside host Anna Faris. “It’s crazy places that rap music can take you and doors that can open up off of the things that we’ve worked on all these years,” Drake told MTV News after “SNL” show rehearsals on Thursday in New York. “It’s so crazy being here today with the same band that I’ve been rolling with — all guys from Toronto. This is crazy, man, this is crazy. It’s an honor for sure.” During his musical set, Drake will perform songs from his November 15 album Take Care, including his newly released “Make Me Proud,” which features Nicki Minaj. Although Drake wouldn’t confirm whether Nicki will appear with him on Saturday, he did promise a “larger-than-life” performance. “One thing that I do notice is not too many people bring atmosphere change [as ‘SNL’ musical guests], so I really pushed to change the station into something different and I think I did a great job of that,” he said. “I just hope that visually and sonically, it’s a superior performance.” While things weren’t completely finalized when we caught up with the former “Degrassi” star, he said he also hoped to be able to get some acting in: “I think that I’m gonna be involved in the actual skits.” Are you looking forward to Drake’s ‘”SNL” performance? Drake On Threesomes & Being “Hurt” By Rihanna: “I Was A Naive Kid”

Link:

Drake and Rihanna’s relationship was short-lived. In fact, it may have not have even been a relationship. The two stars were first spotted together at a club four months she was assaulted by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, but while Drake may have caught feelings, Rihanna certainly didn’t. Here’s what he told Elle: On being hurt by Rihanna : “At the time it hurt, but she didn’t mean to. I’ll never put that on her. I was hurt because I slowly started to realize what it was. I guess I thought it was more. That was the first girl with any fame that paid me any mind. You spend days reading about this person in magazines. All of a sudden you have this number-one song and you’re at some birthday party and there she is. And you’re just some naive kid from Toronto staying in some sh**ty-ass hotel who got invited to this party on a whim. That’s just how it happened.” On his fake Twitter marriage to Nicki Minaj : “I don’t know if we were really pretending. I’d marry Nicki. I think Nicki would be one of the only people that would understand me at the end of all of this and be able to love me.” On receiving naked pictures: “If you send them without me asking, it’s like, You’ve done this before. But I’m away a lot. If there’s a woman I’m into, I might want to get a picture from her to handle business myself, as opposed to doing something I might regret.” On threesomes: “I’ve never had one. I swear. I’m a one-woman kind of guy.” Drake Says Rihanna Played Him Like A Pawn Did Drake Have Sex With Kreayshawn?! [VIDEO] Does Drake Have A Cocaine Habit? Madonna to Perform Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show

Spoiler alert: We already know who’s going to be in the Super Bowl. Well, the halftime show anyway. Madonna will headline the extravaganza, according to SB Nation (dot) com. The 53-year-old Material Girl continues the NFL’s recent tradition of recruiting musical legends to perform between halves. Over the last 10 years, the Super Bowl halftime show has featured such artists as Prince, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen. The move toward securing older artists came in response to the outcry over the notorious Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake “wardrobe malfunction” of 2004. The Black Eyed Peas halftime show this year was kind of terrible, which didn’t do younger artists any favors either. Anyway, Madonna will surely bring her A-game. A cautionary note to halftime show producers, though: Do not, under any circumstances, adorn the stage with hydrangeas . Super Bowl XLVI is set for February 5. [Photo: WENN.com]

Drake Takes Center Field In ‘Headlines’ Video

Drizzy puts Toronto hometown on full display in latest Take Care clip. By Rob Markman Drake (file) Photo: Getty Images All Drake cares about is money and the city that he’s from, and in his “Headlines” video Drake puts both on full display. Standing center field in Toronto’s Rogers Centre, Drizzy adjusts his black Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap as the stadium’s scoreboard is lit up with the title of his October 24 album, Take Care. The Young Money soldier released the clip on Sunday through his October’s Very Own blog , three weeks before his sophomore LP is set to drop. Directed by OVO crew members Lamar Taylor and Hyghly Alleyne, “Headlines” doesn’t necessarily follow a narrative but instead places Drake in a few different scenes, performing his rhymes for the camera and contemplating his comeback. “I might be too strung out on compliments, overdosed on confidence,” the MC spits as he emerges from a blockade of his stoic-looking crew embers. From there, we see Drake rapping in front of a rundown building with the letters “OVOXO” sprayed in graffiti on the wall, and then spitting his verse in a high-rise elevator. Interestingly enough, no other members of the Young Money team appear in the video; no cameos from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj or Cash Money’s Birdman. It is a family affair, however. By the start of the second verse, Drake sits at the head of a dining table, puffing on a cigar with an assortment of wine bottles scattered about. Members of his team sit with him in a “Sopranos”-style, La Cosa Nostra scene. It isn’t the over-the-top video Kanye West directed for Drizzy’s “Best I Ever Had” . Instead “Headlines,” like the previously released “Marvins Room” video (also from Take Care ), is set in Canada and gives a more intimate look into who the superstar rapper really is. As the clip comes to a close, Drake is once again standing center field in Roger’s Centre as the stadium’s dome opens to reveal Toronto’s skyline. Who says you can’t go back home? Ryan Gosling: What’s Next After ‘Drive’?

Actor will reportedly reteam with director Nicolas Winding Refn for several projects including a possible ‘Logan’s Run’ remake. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Gosling Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Ryan Gosling ‘s “Drive” didn’t exactly zip away from the multiplex this weekend with a hefty box-office haul, grossing only $11 million. That’s a respectable sum for a Cannes darling — less high-octane thriller than slow-burning, tension-filled drama — that was always going to have trouble finding a mainstream audience. But we certainly haven’t heard the last of “Drive,” which remains likely to be a player come awards season, with Gosling potentially nabbing actor nods and helmer Nicolas Winding Refn looking to pick up other wins on the heels of his Cannes directing award. Gosling, for his part, will have some serious competition … from himself: The actor’s “Ides of March” is also sure to be in the mix come the fall. Whatever happens, Gosling is going to be busy from now through awards season and far, far beyond. “Ides Of March” Hitting theaters in October after a festival run this month, “Ides” features Gosling as an idealistic press secretary to a charismatic Ohio governor played by George Clooney , who also wrote and directed the project. The talent in front of and behind the camera made for a buzzy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, but a crowded field that includes the likes of Steven Spielberg, Stephen Daldry, Woody Allen and Tate Taylor (with his sleeper hit “The Help”) leaves an uncertain awards-season path for “Ides.” “The Place Beyond The Pines” Perhaps we’ve just got “Drive” on the mind, but this project sounds strangely similar to Gosling’s latest. He stars as a motorcycle stunt driver who contemplates committing a crime to benefit his loved ones. At least he looks far different: We recently spotted Gosling on set rocking bleached blond hair and a tattoo under one eye. Costarring Rose Byrne, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, there’s no word yet on a release date or festival debut. “The Gangster Squad” Production on Ruben Fleischer’s (“Zombieland”) third feature kicked off earlier this month with an all-star cast in place, including Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Set in post-World War II Los Angeles, the story focuses on the city’s battles against the infiltration of the East Coast mob. Gosling plays a member of the LAPD — a suavely dressed one at that, as some early set photos made clear. “Only God Forgives” Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. Luke Evans was initially set to star in this flick about boxing and prostitution in Bangkok, but the actor had to drop out because of his commitment to the two “Hobbit” films. Gosling reportedly stepped in, with shooting expected to begin in November and an eye on a theatrical release in the second half of 2012, according to Variety . “Logan’s Run” No, seriously: Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. They’re planning on a remake of this 1976 sci-fi classic, with Gosling playing the starring role of a guy living in a dystopian world where no one is allowed to live past the age of 30. The project has long been in development, with directors like Bryan Singer coming and going. Fingers crossed that Gosling and Refn can succeed where others have fallen short. Untitled Romantic Comedy You know the drill by now: Gosling and Refn, together again. Possibly. We know precious little about this project, other than Refn wants to direct, Gosling could star and both men want “Drive” costar Albert Brooks to pen the screenplay. Hey, we’ll bite. “It’s a romantic comedy set in New York, which seems like a great place to start,” Refn told the Los Angeles Times . “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” This one is pure rumor at this point, but reports have suggested Warner Bros. is looking to pair director Steven Soderbergh with a young Hollywood star for this long-gestating adaptation of the ’60s-era spy series. Gosling’s name has come up alongside those of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsg

‘Killer Elite’ Is ‘More Grown-Up,’ Jason Statham Says

Also starring Robert De Niro and Clive Owen, ‘This is a thinking man’s action movie,’ star tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jason Statham Photo: MTV News Jason Statham has got nothing against skull-cracking, explosions-for-explosions-sake action flicks. The guy made his name with “The Transporter,” after all, and he’s getting set for a second go-round opposite Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables 2.” But “Killer Elite” (September 23), despite a title that suggests it’s another in a long line of empty-headed, Statham-starring adventures, is an altogether different creation. Based on a true story that spans the globe from France to Australia, the film stars Statham as an ex-special ops agent on a mission to save his mentor (Robert De Niro), who’s being held captive by a secretive military clan and its menacing leader (Clive Owen). There’s a grittiness simply not seen in much of Statham’s previous work. “This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Statham told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival. “This is a thinking man’s action movie. It’s a bit more grown-up than things in the past I’ve done. In order to do movies like this, I have to go through and do a few of those as well. There’s a lot more going on.” That extends from the words on the page to the guy behind the camera to the dudes mixing it up with Statham when writer/director Gary McKendry yells, “Action!” “The quality of the script, the quality of the filmmaker — those are two elements that attract living legends like Bob De Niro and Clive Owen,” Statham said. “Once I start boxing around with those two, the whole quality of what we’re doing changes. It’s a big step up.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Killer Elite.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
