George Will Schools NYT’s Sanger: Extending Unemployment Benefits Doesn’t Stimulate Economy

George Will on Sunday gave a much-needed economics lesson to New York Times Washington correspondent David Sanger that greatly demonstrated the difference between how conservatives and liberals view unemployment benefits. As the Roundtable segment of ABC’s “This Week” shifted to the G20 summit in Toronto, Sanger said, “Just the day before [Barack Obama] left, Congress could not come to an agreement on a very small extension of unemployment benefits, you know, the most basic stimulus effort that the President tried to push.” Host Jake Tapper asked, “George, why can’t they pass this extension?” With the ball sitting up nicely on the tee, Will smacked it out of the park (video follows with transcript and commentary, relevant section at 4:10):   DAVID SANGER, NEW YORK TIMES: The President’s also in the position in Canada of saying, “Don’t do as I do, do as I say.” I mean, just the day before he left, Congress could not come to an agreement on a very small extension of unemployment benefits, you know, the most basic stimulus effort that the President tried to push. JAKE TAPPER, HOST: 1.2 Million Americans are going to lose their unemployment extensions, or unemployment benefits this week. SANGER: That’s right. So there’s a fundamental stimulus action and the President had to go up and tell the Europeans they were not doing enough for stimulus. TAPPER: George, why can’t they pass this extension? I don’t understand. The Republicans say, “Let spending cuts should pay for this.” The Democrats say, “No, it’s emergency spending.” It seems that this is something where there could be a compromise. GEORGE WILL: Well, partly because they believe that when you subsidize something, you get more of it, and we’re subsidizing unemployment. That is the long-term unemployment, those unemployed more than six months is at an all-time high. And they want, they do not think that it is stimulative because what stimulates is the consumer and the saver’s sense of permanent income. And everyone knows that unemployment benefits are not permanent income. Indeed. Unfortunately, much of America’s media have the same misconception that extending unemployment benefits helps the economy.  Of course, nothing could be further from the truth for those receiving such benefits aren’t going to increase they’re spending because they don’t know how long they’ll be unemployed. Beyond this, they feel little need to get back into the workforce until their benefits expire. This means that despite what folks like Sanger believe and write about, extending unemployment benefits has no economically stimulative impact.  As such, calling this extension an economic stimulus is like calling an ox a bull: he’s thankful for the compliment, but would much rather have back what is rightfully his. Nice job, George.

Drake Spits A Freestyle In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Drizzy rips a verse about fines wines and fake women during a visit to New Orleans radio station. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News A 20-something rap phenom with an eye for the finer things, Drake is finding that when it comes to the ladies, not all of them share his Champagne taste. In an exclusive outtake from the documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” the Young Money MC visits New Orleans radio station Q 93.3, where he spits a freestyle, going in about everything from finances to females. “Why has every woman never dined here before?/ Am I the only 23-year-old wine connoisseur?” Drizzy wonders, as the room erupts with rowdy howls co-signing the hip-hop star’s rhyming skills. The full-length doc depicts the months before Drake dropped his hotly anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. But the freestyle sequence showcases one of the qualities that has made Drake a breakout star: his charismatic, hyper-informed flow. The outtake also captures the heightened buzz that preceded his first major-label offering, as the radio DJ coaxes the star into giving “a preview” of the kinds of bars to come on Later. Ready to flex his lyrical chops, the scene opens with Drizzy animatedly accepting the challenge. A focused Drake even refuses an instrumental (“No beat,” he star insists), spitting a verse a capella. “Please make your long story shorter/ Time is of the essence for the king of second quarter/ Numbers do the talking/ I have nothing for reporters/ I just hope we make these flights and don’t get held up at the border,” Drake spits. The verse demonstrates his trademark verbal agility (“Jumpin’ to the top/ This my leap year”); his witty humor (“I got new girls / But none of they love is for certain/ And call old girls/ But none of they numbers are workin’); and his easy candor (“They ain’t rootin’ for me/ They ain’t clappin’ for me/ I’m only saying can somebody just be happy for me?”). As the station dissolve into hollers of approval, Drake’s Young Money associate Mack Maine tosses out a challenge to any rappers ready to step to the Toronto MC. “I got a mil’ on Drake!” Maine shouts gleefully. “Against any of y’all! — old school, new school, need to know this!” MTV followed Drake in the weeks leading up to the release of his new LP, Thank Me Later. The “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary will re-air on MTV Saturday at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m., Sunday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. on MTV2. Alicia Keys, Sporting Baby Bump, Draws Largest Crowd In ‘Good Morning America’ Concert History

Singer opens set with ‘Empire State of Mind.’ By Rebecca Thomas Alicia Keys performs on “Good Morning America” on Friday Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images NEW YORK — She wasn’t sporting a cape or an “S” on her chest, but Alicia Keys seemed to live up to the title of her empowerment single, “Superwoman,” drawing the largest crowd ever amassed in the history of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series on Friday (June 25) morning. This daughter of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood took the stage at Central Park at 8 a.m., the temperature already tilting toward 80 degrees as she kicked things off with her rendition of the city’s new unofficial anthem, “Empire State of Mind” . “It’s so good to be home, you know, so we gotta talk about where we from,” Keys smiled. Clad in a thigh-baring eggshell-colored jumper, chunky bangles snaking up one arm, Keys performed the tune on piano until the lyrics called for concertgoers to put “one hand in the air for the big city.” The 29-year-old shot up from the bench, revealing the first hint of a baby bump beneath a wide belt as she closed out the final chorus to audience roars: “Now you’re in New York/ These streets will make you feel brand-new/ Big lights will inspire you/ Hear it for New York!” The expectant mother, who recently announced her engagement to producer Swizz Beatz , with whom she’s expecting her first child, paused to talk up her charitable work with Keep a Child Alive, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting African children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. “GMA” host Robyn Roberts congratulated the mother-to-be and complimented Keys’ ensemble, which was paired with towering stilettos. Keys called the impending birth “a blessing.” The R&B diva also introduced the winner of a contest to become the blogger for her newly created website, . The 12-time Grammy winner continued the set with selections from her latest album, The Element of Freedom, launching into the whispery “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart.” At the song’s piano coda, Keys solicited the crowd’s assistance: “Somebody help me!” and they happily obliged, raining la la la’s across the park. One of a group of teenage female fans standing close to the stage, gushed that she would “die” if Keys brought out current Billboard sensation Drake, as the band began to play the light percussion of “Unthinkable,” written by the Toronto MC . Drake didn’t materialize, but Keys’ clear vocals were more than enough. When fans erupted into chants for an encore, they seemed stunned to see Keys pause then signal “one song” with her index finger. They returned her generosity by singing along word-for-word — and loudly — to the celebratory “No One.” What did you think of Alicia’s “Good Morning America” concert? Tell us in the comments! Watch Drake Rehearse In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Drake and band work out kinks in ‘Find Your Love.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV Most rappers perform on stage alongside a hype man, from Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek to Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star. But Drake — who is already unlike most MCs because he also sings during performances — worries about his background singers when he puts his shows more than who’ll rap next to him. Prior to a recent performance in Toronto, the hometown star decided during his rehearsal that his set would need more than just the band backing him. “If I had a female voice,” he says in an exclusive outtake from MTV’s “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary . “Someone else to go back and forth [with]. His keyboard player and musical confidant “D10” asks if Drake felt overwhelmed performing “Find Your Love” (which he also performed on “The Tonight Show” last night) onstage by himself. “To do the whole thing with no accompaniment, no nothing, it’s impossible,” Drake responds. “No singer — if you look, Alicia Keys, [Beyonc

Drake Talks Michael Jackson, Dead Prez ‘Over’ Homages

‘Just to honor him was great,’ Drizzy tells Mixtape Daily of MJ. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Drake Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Drake DP still keep it crunk up! “Drake borrowed the style — they took it right back. They did their thing,” DJ Drama told Mixtape Daily on Monday. He was explaining why Dead Prez wanted to freestyle on the 23-year-old’s “Over” on their new tape Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz. “The guys go in on a lot of records,” Drama said. “The hits, as well as some obscure joints. They had to go in on ‘Over.’ ” The mixtape came out Tuesday and borrows from the title of their 2004 LP, Revolutionary but Gangsta A few months back, while on the set of his “Over” video, Drake told MTV News he was a fan of M1 and Stic.Man. “I also do this thing in the song [‘Over’] where I flip Dead Prez,” he said of his tip of the hat to the duo’s “It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop” from their classic 2000 debut, Let’s Get Free. “They say, ‘One thing about music when it hits you feel no pain/ White folks say it controls your brain/ I know better than that/ It’s just game.’ I love that flow,” Drake explained. “So I took that flow and flipped it in the second verse.” But Drake doesn’t just nod to DP on the track; the Toronto MC pays tribute to the greatest artist ever, Michael Jackson. Since this week marks the one-year anniversary of his death, it’s only right we let Drizzy chime in on his stellar MJ reference: ” ‘Bout to go ‘Thriller’ Mike Jackson on these n—as/ All I need is a f—ing red jacket with some zippers.” “That was sort of my reference point; that phenomenon of Michael,” he said. “He was young and had the world excited and anticipating his every move. That was my homage to him and the impact that he had on the world that I live in. It’s also … great for people to say. Especially, unfortunately what happened to him, just to honor him was great.” “Over” is currently the #1 hip-hop song in the country, topping the Billboard rap songs chart.
