No Doubt Return With New Album In September

‘Ear candy coming your way,’ band writes on its website about first album in 11 years. By John Mitchell No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani Photo: R. Mickshaw/ Getty Images/ Fox No Doubt have finally set the release date for their long -in-the-works sixth studio album, the band’s first in 11 years. The still-untitled set will drop September 25. “We are incredibly excited to share the new music with you. Ear candy coming your way,” the band wrote on its website . “Thank you all so much for your support over the last 25 years. We’re really proud of our new album and we hope you love it as much as we do.” The band began initial work on the album in March 2008, after Gwen Stefani wrapped the tour behind her second solo album, The Sweet Escape. Songwriting on the effort reportedly got off to a slow start because, according to a post from Stefani , she was distracted by her second pregnancy, though she was certain at the time that “this could be the most inspired No Doubt record so far.” Energized by being back together in the studio for the first time since recording 2001’s multiplatinum Rock Steady, the band decided to take a break from recording to hit the road for a wildly successful summer 2009 greatest-hits tour. The band reconvened at bassist Tony Kanal’s personal studio in Hollywood after the tour concluded and spent the majority of 2010 writing and carefully polishing several demos. In January 2011, No Doubt guitarist Tom Dupont posted a message letting fans know that the group transitioned to the Santa Monica studio of producer Mark “Spike” Stent, who also worked on Rock Steady, to officially begin tracking the effort. Last summer, Rolling Stone visited Stent’s studio and sampled several songs the band had recorded. Of the 12 tracks announced at that time, the magazine lavished particular affection on “Settle Down,” calling it a “party-ready reggae blast,” and “One More Summer,” which “updates the band’s ska-pop sound with pounding dance beats, arena-size guitars and a beyond-catchy chorus.” A month after Rolling Stone ‘s studio visit, in late July 2011, the band teamed up in the studio with Major Lazer , the recording name for hip-hop/dance producers Diplo and Switch (Usher, M.I.A., Beyonc

My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania….

My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania. I’ve been a huge fan of Justin from the start. On Justin’s official Facebook page he would reply to people’s comments on his wall because he wasn’t as famous yet. So, I decided to write on his wall and see if he would answer. On July 5 th , 2009   he answered me.  He said “its me…and go after your dreams.” AHHH!! On December 15 th , 2009 I finally got to meet Justin Bieber. My friends and I got VIP passes for Pop-Con. We got to meet Justin and Selena Gomez. I can’t even describe how excited I was. We waited for 3 hours in line to meet him. When it was finally my turn to get a picture with him I just froze! When I walked up to him he gave me a big hug and we took the picture. After he said, “Are you excited for the show?” I said… YEAH!! I was in shock. He gave me a hug goodbye and I left. I was so happy that I finally got to meet him, if only it lasted for more than 2 minutes! That night I stayed at a hotel across from the concert. Justin’s dancers and Dan Kanter were staying there and were in the lobby. My friends and I got pictures with all of them and talked to them. I saw Dan Kanter standing by himself so I walked up to him and we started talking. I asked him, “Do you wear that hat to all the concerts?” He laughed and said that he LOVES that hat. He was so friendly that we talked for a while. That was just the start of My Bieber Experience. I’ve seen Justin in concert 7 times. At Pop-Con, q102 Jingle Ball ’09, q102 Jingle Ball ’10, and 4 of his My World Tour concerts. In Trenton NJ, at the Wells Fargo Center, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN and in Allentown. At the Trenton NJ concert, I even met one of Justin’s dancers, Marvin Millora. I gave Marvin a CHUCK NORRIS poker chip to give Justin, because I know he LOVES Chuck. After the concert, I tweeted Marvin to see if Justin ever got the chip. And what do you know… He tweeted me back! Marvin said, “Yes he did actually.” I was so excited! I REALLY wanted to go to the Madison Square Garden concert because that is where he was shooting his movie! I begged my dad to get my sister and I tickets but he said it was too late. 2 days before the concert my dad told me he got us tickets! My sister and I sat in a box suite and watched the best concert of our lives! My friends and I got VIP tickets for the Allentown concert and sat in row 6. This was the closest I’ve ever sat at one of his concerts. At this concert we got to go to sound check and go to a lunch with Justin’s backup singers, Legacy, Jessica Jarrell and Vita Chambers! My friends and I talked to Micah, one of the singers, most of the time. He was SO nice!! After the concert, my friends and I went to the tour busses and hung out with the dancers, Legacy, Dan Kanter, Kenny, and Ryan Good. When I was talking with Dan, he said to me “You look so familiar,” I was freaking out inside because he must of remembered talking to me at the hotel. My sister was with us and she thought Nick Demoura was REALLY cute; they were talking for a while! All of a sudden she goes “I’m hungry,” Nick had food so he gave my sister a bite of what he was eating! I was cracking up. Justin’s crew is so welcoming and friendly. I was one of the lucky winners to win an autograph of Justin’s and a piece of the Never Say Never film! That was very special. I won’t say that my Bieber experience has officially ended because hopefully it never will.  I hope to meet Justin and his crew again! -@jp_jbforeverr Original post: My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania….

Madonna Promises ‘A Feast For The Eyes’ On MDNA Tour

Singer has reportedly enlisted fashion guru Jean-Paul Gaultier to design the costumes for the tour, which kicks off May 29. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Imbriani Madonna Photo: MTV News Madonna is several weeks out from launching her MDNA tour . That means she’s working hard on getting every aspect of the show just right, from the music to the design to the looks. Given that Madonna is famous for her spectacular stage shows, fans of the glitzy singer have high expectations for the jaunt, which will kick off on May 29 in Tel Aviv, and will wrap around the globe before planting Stateside on August 28 in Philadelphia. When MTV News caught up with singer at the launch of her Truth or Dare perfume in New York City , she revealed that fans should expect this latest excursion to be just as eye-catching as the ones that came before. “Amazing music, incredible dancing, the team of people that I worked with for the Super Bowl is working with me on this as well,” she explained about the show, which she is currently rehearsing for. And, in the end, she hopes it will be “a feast for the eyes and the ears.” Given how decadent her Roman- and Egyptian-themed Super Bowl performance was, full of acrobatics, sparkling costumes and enough diva-tude to make Cleopatra jealous, it seems that Madge is taking all the right steps to capture that eye-popping essence for her traveling stage show. With a set list floating around that includes tracks like fan favorites “Secret” and “Deeper and Deeper,” as well as new tracks like “Turn Up the Radio” and “Girl Gone Wild,” she’s even enlisted her longtime fashion guru, Jean-Paul Gaultier, to design the costumes for the tour, according to Pink Is The New Blog . He’s worked with her on her Confessions Tour, her Re-Invention Tour, the Drowned World Tour and her Blond Ambition Tour. He’s also the man who designed her famous cone bra. It seems that the Queen of Pop will rule Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum starting at the end of this month through mid-May, according to Newsday . The pop singer and her team are rumored to have rented out the space to rehearse, but she has no plans to stop there during the tour. Madge dropped her album, MDNA , last month. Are you planning on seeing Madge on tour? Let us know in the comments!

‘American Idol’ Enters ‘This Decade’: What Should They Sing?

Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery face off on what ‘Songs From This Decade’ the top seven should tackle. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez Photo: FOX For weeks, it’s felt like we’ve been screaming into the void. We keep begging “American Idol” to get with the program and borrow a page from rivals like “The Voice” and “X Factor” by having the finalists sing songs that were released in the decades since Randy Jackson played bass for Carlos Santana. It’s a novel concept, we know. Seriously, enough with the Billy Joel and Michael Jackson theme nights! Not another collection of Elton John, disco or Frank Sinatra songs, please! Give us something contemporary, dudes — or at least something that may give our aunt in Virginia pause. Finally, “Idol” producers seem to have heard our pleas and given the top seven a shot at sounding halfway relevant this week with “Songs From This Decade” night. Now, the reality singing gods giveth and they taketh away, so while we’re in mortal fear of hearing Jason Mraz and Train songs, we’re also a bit torn about what is likely to turn into an Adele-valanche. Be careful what you wish for. But we’ll take it. So here’s what songs MTV News’ resident “Idol” experts think the remaining contestants should tackle. They failed to take our advice on last week’s ’80-themed show , and look how that one turned out … DeAndre . Read on for our picks! Joshua Ledet Josh smashed it last week and is once again at the top of his game. But here’s the thing: The guy remains an R&B tabula rasa, personality-wise. It’s hard to see him headlining an arena tour or filming an iconic video. Since we hear he’s way more confident off-camera than on, L-Deezy needs to get a little grimy, and what better way to do that than with Usher’s “OMG”? Or, if he must, I offer a one-time-only Adele dispensation for “Someone Like You.” — Kaufman I see him going one of two ways tonight: Either he embraces his brassy, sassy side and does Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” — which he’d kill,

Katy Perry Says New Album Will Be ‘Real F—ing Dark’

Star also reveals she was set to appear in award-winning film ‘The Help.’ By Zachary Swickey Katy Perry Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Many fans have been curious about what pop star Katy Perry ‘s next record will sound like — especially considering her much-publicized divorce from comedian Russell Brand and the heavy recent single “Part of Me.” Well, Perry herself is here to tell you the album is going to be “real f—ing dark.” Talking to The Sun, the singer was rather blunt about her feelings toward her failed marriage, saying, “I’d like to use a time machine and go back to a specific date, please.” (Ouch!) “My music is about to get real f—ing dark. You’d never see my face because my hair would be in it,” she continued. In other Perry news, while the singer has yet to dive into the acting game — outside of cameo appearances and voicing Smurfette in last year’s “The Smurfs” — she’s revealed that she almost got a bit part in last year’s Academy Award-winning film “The Help.” “There was a time when I was going to be involved in ‘The Help’ — just a small part, I wasn’t going to be Emma Stone or anything — but I couldn’t because the shooting schedule conflicted with the release of my record,” she lamented to Teen Vogue. “And I was upset about that; I knew it was going to be an important film.” Although she didn’t get to appear in “The Help,” Perry has her very own 3-D film coming out this summer. “Katy Perry: Part of Me” is a documentary as well as a live concert film, much in the vein of Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never.” “I wanted to show people this parade that surrounds me. I wanted them to see the engine. I wanted people to be able to experience the tour and all the joy it brought, which is why we shot it in 3-D,” Perry said about the film. “Katy Perry: Part of Me” is expected to hit the big screen this upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Toms Shoes Founder Wants You To Ditch Your Shoes

Blake Mycoskie hopes to raise awareness about global poverty on Tuesday with One Day Without Shoes. By Uptin Saiidi A group marches on behalf of TOMS Shoes to raise awareness for global poverty Photo: Tom’s Shoes The guy responsible for putting thousands of pairs of shoes on needy children is now asking for a different kind of favor: Take off your shoes. On Tuesday, One Day Without Shoes encourages people to walk barefoot to raise awareness of global poverty. Whether you go barefoot for as little as 10 minutes, during your lunch break, or make it a full-day affair, Toms Shoes creator Blake Mycoskie hopes to generate buzz that will help attract aid for children in need of shoes around the world. MTV News recently caught up with Mycoskie to learn more about the campaign, which is in its fifth year. “Taking your shoes off for that one day will help create a lot of awareness, not only for what we are doing at Toms, but for what you might want to do or what someone else is doing to help in global poverty. It’s an easy way to get involved, and it’s my favorite day of the year, and it’s free!” More than 250,000 people around the world went barefoot last year in support of One Day Without Shoes. Since the company was first founded in 2006, it’s had major success with its one-for-one model, where it donates a pair of shoes to children in need for every pair purchased. The classic style of the shoe was first inspired by shoes worn by Argentine farmers for centuries, which Mycoskie observed during his travels as a contestant on “The Amazing Race.” As of last September, the company has donated more than 1 million pairs, but the success did not happen overnight. “The first year that we started Toms was this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience, because we didn’t know what we were doing and we were traveling around the world, we were begging people to buy our shoes, we were figuring out how to give them away, we had no money and were literally just in that survival mode,” Mycoskie recalled. “A couple of years ago … we were able to move into an office and have a little more of a sustainable business and see the business grow and the media accept us and the retailers, and that was really awesome.” In 2011, the company launched Toms eyewear, using a similar model of one-for-one to help children receive either medical care, prescription glasses or sight-saving surgery. As for the future of Toms Shoes, Blake has another shoe company in mind that he’d love to follow in its path. “I think that the dream is for Toms to follow in the Converse path. They have become a classic global fashion item that no matter what age you are or what country you live in, you have a pair of Chuck Taylors.” For Tuesday, though, regardless of the kinds of shoes you own, Mycoskie is hoping you leave them at home. Far East Movement Promise ‘Booty Popping’ On LMFAO Tour

Sorry for Party Rocking Tour kicks off May 22 and also features Quest Crew, Sidney Samson, Eva Simons and Natalia Kills. By Jocelyn Vena Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Far East Movement clearly aren’t preparing any apologies for their upcoming Sorry for Party Rocking Tour with LMFAO. When MTV News caught up with the fellas of FEM recently, they shared what the motto is for the 26-date trek, which will also feature the Quest Crew, Sidney Samson, Eva Simons and Natalia Kills. “It’s gonna be a whole lot of bass and a whole lot of showers,” J-Splif explained. “Bring your raincoats.” “There’s going to be a little bit of wiggling going on,” Kev Nish added. “There’s gonna be shuffling, booty popping, a lot of movement. That’s what both crews like to do. Big shout-out to [LMFAO’s] RedFoo and the Party Rock Crew and [our label] Cherry Tree, really, for putting this all together.” The tour will kick off in Columbus, Ohio, on May 22 before partying all around the country, including stops in Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Miami. The tour will wrap up on July 4 in Toronto. And, given the two groups’ long, rambunctious history with each other, it should come as no surprise that their focus will be on having fun. “We’ve been friends with LMFAO since, like, the diaper days,” Nish continued. “We was all partying in diapers, chilling in the crib. But, yeah, we’re grateful to them, all the love they’ve shown us. RedFoo actually co-directed/executive produced the video for ‘Live My Life,’ and we took the energy of the tour that we’ve already been on and put that on camera.” May 22 also happens to be the day Far East Movement drop their new album, Dirty Bass, which features Justin Bieber on the lead single, “Live My Life,” and Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz on “If I Die Tomorrow.” Are you planning on seeing Far East Movement and LMFAO live? ‘Catching Fire’ Director: Who Could Carry The Torch?

As Gary Ross’ ‘Hunger Games’ future becomes uncertain, Hobnobbing scopes out other directors well-suited for the film. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Gary Ross’ future with “The Hunger Games” sequel, “Catching Fire,” seemed a foregone conclusion — so much so that the helmer felt comfortable discussing his preliminary vision for the follow-up with MTV News recently. So it was a rude awakening for fans when The Hollywood Reporter reported on Wednesday that Ross was embroiled in “tough negotiations” with Lionsgate regarding his contract, and that the studio might opt to go the way of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” and have a different director oversee follow-ups. It’s evident from interviews that Ross has a strong passion and deep insight into Suzanne Collins’ source material, so it would be a shame to see him go — a sentiment many fans share, according to a poll on MTV’s Hollywood Crush. But, if the franchise does lose Ross, which directors would be well-suited for “Catching Fire”? We have a few ideas: Steven Soderbergh The “Contagion” director is already acquainted with the world of Panem, having served as a second-unit director, creating the vision for the emotionally wrought District 11 rebellion. Soderbergh is adept at action sequences (see: “Haywire”) and boasts a flair for the stylized (see: “Ocean’s Eleven”) — important qualities for both the arena and the Capitol. Debra Granik Granik has ample experience guiding Jennifer Lawrence in a gritty tale of survival: She helmed the harrowing “Winter’s Bone,” which garnered Lawrence her first Oscar nomination. Why not extend this fruitful relationship? And though the film doesn’t require a woman director to convey Katniss’ viewpoint, it might be nice. David Yates Yates took over the “Harry Potter” franchise with “Order of the Phoenix,” going on to deliver a satisfying finale with “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” He’s clearly comfortable picking up where previous directors left off, and has a mastery of epic, franchise filmmaking. Kathryn Bigelow To be fair, Bigelow’s work directing the war-torn drama “The Hurt Locker” makes her more qualified for the conflict-heavy “Mockingjay,” but why not get an early start setting up the events of the final installment? Plus, the woman’s got an Oscar, for Effie’s sake! Christopher Nolan If we’re gonna dream, why not dream big? Nolan’s earned a reputation for awe-inspiring aesthetics (see: “Inception,” anything he’s done involving a crime-fighting bat), so we can’t even begin to imagine what the Capitol and the jungle-themed arena would look like in his visionary hands. Would you be disappointed to see Gary Ross go? Who do you think would be capable of taking over the franchise? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!
