Eminem, Dr. Dre Grammy Performance To Show Razor-Sharp Rap Skills

Hip-hop superstars’ previous shows have created video sets and packed a lyrical punch. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Getty Images When Eminem hits the stage, he rarely goes it alone, having already lit up Grammy night with pop luminaries like Elton John and hip-hop upstarts like Drake. This year, he’s taking it back to his hip-hop roots by teaming up with longtime mentor and rap legend Dr. Dre , with additional assistance from Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. Sunday’s performance promises to be a major hip-hop moment, as not only will Eminem rip the stage, but the set will mark Dre’s first live performance in more than 10 years (not counting his hysteria-inducing cameos at Shady and Jay-Z’s Home and Home Tour ). But what should fans expect from the Doc and Em’s first joint awards-show matchup in over a decade? Well, if we take cues from their onstage team-ups back in the day, we can expect the greats to school anyone who may have forgotten about their concert chemistry and serve up more of their renowned, top-flight lyricism. At the 1999 VMAs, a newbie Shady performed his debut smash “My Name Is” in a hoodie with “Role Model” splashed across the front in blinking lights. Midway through the track, Dre showed up to spar with Slim for the ethics-juggling hit “Guilty Conscience,” re-creating the bank-robbing scene from the track’s video. Then another chart-topping Dre prot

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’: A Cheat Sheet

MTV News takes a look back on the long road to single’s release. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News For Lady Gaga fans, the road to the release of “Born This Way” has been long. With teases for months now, Gaga’s dedicated Little Monsters finally get to hear the song, from her May release of the same name. Before you hit play and listen to the song on repeat, MTV News takes a look back at the months of anticipation for the release. Gaga first got the buzz started in September. While wearing a dress made entirely of meat, she got up onstage at the VMAs and not only announced the album title , but also sang a bit of the song for fans. Soon, details about the album were emerging, but little was known about the title track until January 1, when she announced that she would be releasing the song February 13 . Her longtime collaborator, RedOne, spoke to MTV News weeks later to reveal that the song is “so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world.” Later that month, Gaga initially teased fans with a few lyrics from the song before giving up the full lyrics — revealing an anthem about equality for everyone , regardless of race, creed or sexuality. “It is a very gay song — unapologetically, gay-in-your-face gay — but it’s also a universal song that can relate to everyone,” pal Perez Hilton told MTV News . “To all of us outsiders, to all of us freaks, to all of us who feel different. And the music is undeniable. It sounds like a smash. It is a smash. It is one of the best songs of Gaga’s career.” As February 13 quickly approached, Gaga decided to treat her fans and release the track two days earlier than expected. She even shared the artwork for the track . By the time the song was released, Lady Gaga was gracing the cover of Vogue and sharing with her fans her process for writing the track. “I wrote [‘Born This Way’] in 10 f—ing minutes,” she explains in the article. “And it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga

Lil Wayne’s ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ Video Premiere Postponed

Finishing touches are still being put on the clip, which was set to debut Thursday on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne was set to premiere the video for “6 Foot 7 Foot” on MTV this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET during the special presentation “MTV First: Lil Wayne,” but the highly anticipated debut has been postponed as the finishing touches are being put on the video. To tide you over until the premiere, however, here’s a little more from Wayne about how the track came together. The song is the lead single from Weezy’s forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV, the Cash Money Records superstar’s first project since his release from prison in November. The rollicking track was produced by Bangladesh, who helmed Wayne’s “A Milli” and features the newest Young Money addition Cory Gunz . The upstart rapper is the progeny of veteran New York rapper Peter Gunz (“Deja Vu”) and an alumnus of XXL ‘s noted Freshmen 10 cover in 2009. According to Wayne, he placed Gunz on “6 Foot 7 Foot” to introduce his recent signee since he knew how much attention would be given to his first track. He characterized the strategy as a similar path he took with Drake and Nicki Minaj. “You know, I put Nicki on the right songs, I put Drake on the right songs; I picked the right song,” Wayne told MTV News. “It makes people pay attention … because I know that people were waiting to see what I’ll say on my first record, my first Lil Wayne record [since getting out of prison]. ‘Cause, of course, I’ve done a bunch of features, and I’m quite sure whoever I did a feature for [before], as soon as I came home they put it out ’cause it got Wayne on here. ‘He just came home, let’s put it out.’ So, I knew people were going to look at my first record like, ‘I want to know what he’s talking about on his first record.’ And, I gave you the jewel at the end. It’s like I’m forcing it on you, you got to hear this. It made everybody who didn’t know Cory Gunz [say], ‘Who is that?’ ” Gunz, for his part, said when he got the call to join the track, Weezy gave him one simple edict: Attack. “We went straight to the studio and Tunes [told me], ‘I have something for you to hear,’ and it went from there,” Cory told MTV News in December. “[Wayne said], ‘We gon’ have to attack this.’ As soon as I heard it, it was like instant. Some beats you hear [or] certain songs you hear in a party … and they hit you in a certain kind of way, and that’s kinda what the beat did. So we sat and the record is now getting an amazing response. People been messing with the record, so it’s dope. I’m happy to be here.” No timetable has been set for the release of the “6 Foot 7 Foot” video, but we will bring you that info as soon as it is available. Related Artists Lil Wayne Cory Gunz

Katy Perry Tweets Excitement Over Super Bowl ‘Glee’ Episode

Show featured Cheerios singing her track ‘California Gurls.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images While the Super Bowl was cheerleader-less, a super-special episode of “Glee” that premiered right after the big game brought the cheerleaders. During the opening moments of the show, McKinley High’s very own Cheerios put their stamp of Katy Perry’s fun-loving “California Gurls.” So what did the pop star think of it? Judging from her tweet, she kind of loved it. “#GLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE #WEEEEEEEE!” she wrote Sunday night as the episode paid tribute to her colorful 2010 ode to all things SoCal. In the episode, the Cheerios borrowed a play out of Perry’s over-the-top playbook to tackle the bubbly track, which kicked off the super-sized episode of “Glee.” Their performance was a spectacle of skimpy costumes, BMX tricks and sparks-shooting bras that still left Coach Sue cold. So that meant bringing in the big guns — literally. As a solution for her pom-pom ennui, Sylvester scored a cheerleader-flinging cannon as a means to take the squad’s stunts to new heights. This isn’t the first time “Glee” has put its spin on one of Perry’s Teenage Dream hits. Last year, the show included Perry’s ode to falling in love, “Teenage Dream.” It was performed by Darren Criss, who sang the track to Chris Colfer’s Kurt. Perry shared her reactions via Twitter last November around the time the episode aired, writing, “Oh…My…Gosh… this just brought a sweet tear to my eye! Teenage Dream on GLEE makes my heart go WEEEEE!” She later told “Access Hollywood” of Criss, “He’s amazing! I love when any of my songs are remixed or interpreted differently. I just love that. I really welcome a creative mind to anything.” Related Artists Katy Perry

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Is ‘Gonna Inspire People,’ Skrillex Says

‘The underground is gonna change,’ dubstep star tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali, with reporting by Adam Stewart Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive While a more complete demo told only part of the story Monday, legions of Britney Spears fans have no doubt spent the better part of Tuesday morning (January 1) reveling in Brit Brit’s return with her new single, “Hold It Against Me,” which was made available for download at midnight. In many ways, Ms. Spears has served up a jam in line with popular music’s current craze, EDM (electronic dance music), but make no mistake, “Against Me” is a hard-hitting thumper of a pop electro-house tune. What’s especially unique about the Dr. Luke- and Max Martin-produced single is that, in typical trailblazing fashion, Spears has saluted the dance music world by including a section of dubstep in the surefire radio hit. About 2:20 into the song, the track slips into a simple dubstep break with Spears calling out, “Gimme something good/ Don’t want to wait, I want it now/ Drop it like a hood, and show me how you work it out.” Already, less than 24 hours after the song’s official release, some are questioning whether Spears has hammered a nail into dubstep’s coffin. Some of underground EDM’s purist fans are worried that Spears has watered down their guarded and beloved art form. But the current prince of dubstep told MTV News he thinks Spears is doing a great thing for the genre, even though he isn’t in love with the section used in “Against Me.” “The more the stuff that is underground becomes mainstream, the more the underground is gonna change,” Skrillex explained Monday. “I think it’s gonna inspire people to obviously do something different.” Los Angeles-based Skrillex, born Sonny Moore, has a background in the post-hardcore metal scene, but in the past two years, has achieved popular success in the EDM world. He signed with deadmau5 ‘s mau5trap records and, toward the end of 2010, released a slew of dubstep singles that topped beatport.com’s chart, even holding eight positions on the dance-music site’s top 10 at one point. “I thought the track [“Against Me”] was great overall,” the face of popular new dubstep said. “I’ll be honest, man: I love Max Martin. I think he’s an absolute genius. And Dr. Luke did it, right? I think they are a f—ing dream team. I love the track! “I thought the dubstep part was unnecessary,” he continued. “Not to say it was done wrong. I feel like it was very self-aware and consciously put in there to be ‘the dubstep part.’ I can see a lot of people getting pissed about it — the purist dubstep and drum and bass fans — but at the end of the day, it’s cool that people are trying new things. Sooner or later, anything that happens in the underground — be it watered down or not — it always makes itself into the mainstream. It’s cool to hear.” To Spears’ credit, Skrillex, who it would seem couldn’t come from a more opposite musical background than Spears, spoke of her legacy. “I really respect her,” he admitted. “From being a Mouseketeer to all the controversial stuff and to all the stuff she has been through. She does have an incredible legacy and an incredible story. The fact that she is still making records just says a lot.” Do you think “Hold It Against Me” will have an impact on dubstep? Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Single To Get ‘Glee’ Treatment

Guest star Gwyneth Paltrow’s character will also hook up romantically with Mr. Schuester. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” single isn’t available for public consumption yet but the track is already slated to be covered by the McKinley High crooners on “Glee.” Co-creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that the song will be featured in an episode set to air in either March or April. The storyline will focus on gay bully Karofsky, played by Max Adler, who is in the closet. Murphy said he chose to revamp the track because of its inspirational vibe; a theme he plans to thread throughout the episode. “I love that that song is [an] anthem,” Murphy said. “This show is by nature optimistic and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. So I don’t really know what that’s going to be, but I do know we’re going to do a whole episode that’s about that song.” The episode will likely be bookended by the release of Gaga’s single in February, and the drop date of her Born This Way album, which is set to hit shelves in May. Gleeks will not only get more Gaga, but Gwyneth Paltrow will also return as saucy substitute teacher Holly Holliday, and this time she gets to heat things up with faculty heartthrob Mr. Schuester. “Gwyneth is coming back for two episodes. She’s coming back specifically to date Will [Matthew Morrison],” Murphy confirmed. “Those two have become really good friends in real life and had really good chemistry. She’s coming back as a sex education teacher. Gwyneth and I are emailing, talking every week: What are we gonna sing? We’re trying to do something fantastic. So she’ll be [in episodes] 15 and 16. She comes back [to film] in January and she’s with us for three and a half weeks I think.” Are you looking forward to more Gaga and Gwyneth-packed “Glee”? Let us know in the comments! James Franco, Asked About Gay Roles, Says ‘Maybe I’m Just Gay’

‘There are lots of reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to have sex with guys,’ actor says. By Gil Kaufman James Franco Photo: Getty Images They’re the two questions actor James Franco hears almost every time he sits down for an interview: “Are you gay?” and “are you stoned?” The multi-hyphenate, perpetually heavy-lidded actor (who, for the record, denies that he’s a smoker) has aroused curiosity about his sexuality by playing a number of high-profile gay parts in movies such as “Milk,” “Howl” and his upcoming “The Broken Tower.” Franco, who has been in a relationship with actress Ahna O’Reilly for more than five years, has avoided the definitive denial/confirmation that other high-profile celebrities have made in the past when questioned about their sexual preferences. In a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story, though, he tackled the issue head-on and provided, well, clarity of a sort. “It’s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,” Franco said. “It’s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ‘Is he straight or is he gay?’ Or, ‘This is your third gay movie — come out already!’ And all based on gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.” The “127 Hours” star has spurred further talk about his bedroom politics with news that he’s planning to write the screenplay and direct a biopic about gay “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Sal Mineo. “There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,” he said about why he chooses the roles he does and why gay parts are often much meatier than other ones he’s offered. “I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ’50s, and one being in the ’20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition.” But, ever the provocateur, the sometime “General Hospital” guest star, painter, author and Ph.D. student ended the interview with another explanation for why he might be choosing all these homosexual roles. “You know what, maybe I’m just gay.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears’ New Single Is A ‘Surefire Hit,’ Perez Hilton Says

Ryan Seacrest, who has heard the final cut of ‘Hold It Against Me,’ also gives the tune his seal of approval. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ WireImage The demo for Britney Spears’ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” that hit the Web on Thursday is catching people’s attention, and it seems clear that the pop star wants everyone to hit the dance floor and party. The unfinished track, which feature the vocals of songwriter Bonnie McKee rather than Brit herself, is a dirty, grinding club banger with pulsing beats and lustful lyrics. The track already has the media talking. “With her vocals on that it’s going to be an undeniable, surefire hit,” Perez Hilton told MTV News . “I loved it. My own critique is that the demo sounds a little too much like Ke$ha. I hope that the finished song feels like a Britney song. Beside that it’s still to me a hit song.” Perez’s Ke$ha comparison likely can be attributed to the work of Dr. Luke. And the gossip guru’s further evaluation of the tune draws parallels to another Luke production. “It’s not inspired. It’s not groundbreaking,” Perez explains, noting that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering he’s only heard the demo. “It’s like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’; I think this is the equivalent.” Perez isn’t the only one giving “Hold It Against Me” his seal of approval. Ryan Seacrest revealed that Britney’s managers, Larry Rudolf and Adam Leber, played him the finished version of the track , and he insisted that if fans are stoked about the demo, then they should just be over the moon about the final cut. “@BritneySpears just sent me ‘Hold It Against Me.’ WOW. The demo doesn’t even compare!” he wrote on Twitter . Seacrest added that Britney’s video for the tune is set to shoot in two weeks, after a month of rehearsals, noting that it’s “gonna be major.” He also reported that Rudolf and Leber played him another track off the singer’s March release, “I I I Wanna Go,” but gave little details about the song besides describing it as a “powerhouse single.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears
