Eminem Calls Relapse ‘Ehh’ In New Song, ‘Not Afraid’

‘Let’s be honest, that last Relapse CD was ehh, ‘ Em raps on lead single from Recovery. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ Getty Images Eminem unveiled “Not Afraid,” the first single from his forthcoming Recovery album , on Thursday morning (April 29), and the track is a strong departure from the usual lead cuts Slim Shady delivers: There are no jabs at pop-culture icons, no jovial goofballing. Mr. Mathers is reflective and remorseful over the Boi-1da-produced track. “It’s been a ride, I guess I had to go to that place to get to this one. Some of you might still be in that place. If you trying to get out, follow me,” he says, talking at the beginning of the track. As the raps starts to kick in, Em threatens to “tear down” those who looked down on him. “You can try to read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay ’em/ But you won’t take the sting out these words before I say ’em. “I’m not afraid/ To take a stand,” he continues on the chorus. “Everybody come take my hand/ We’ll walk this road together through the storm/ Whatever weather come the war/ Just letting you know that you’re not alone/ Holla if you feel been down the same road.” On the second verse, Em admits to some artistic missteps and declares that his last album, Relapse, was a bit of letdown. “To the fans, I never let you down again, I’m back/ I promise to never go back on that promise,” the MC says in the song’s second verse. “In fact, let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ehh / Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground/ Relax, I ain’t going to do that now.” Later in the verse, Em talks about his personal struggles. “But I think I’m still trying to figure this crap out/ Thought I had it mapped out, but I guess I didn’t/ It’s time to exorcise these demons / These muthaf—as are doing jumping jacks now.” As the song comes to a close, Em says he doesn’t want any more drama and wants to focus on raising his family. “I can’t just keep living this way,” he sings. “So starting today, I’m breaking out of this cage / I’m standing up, I’mma face my demons/ I’m manning up, I’mma hold my ground/ I’ve had enough, I’m so fed up/ Time to put my life back together right now.” Recovery is slated for a June 22 release. Hayley Williams Calls Cameo With Eminem On B.o.B’s Album ‘Incredible’

‘I’m so proud to be a part of this!’ Paramore frontwoman tells MTV News By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images He may already be Justin Bieber’s favorite rapper , but on his debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, Atlanta’s own B.o.B is looking to expand that fanbase even further — to the Warped Tour set. In addition to cameos by the likes of T.I. and Lupe Fiasco, Adventures also features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo on a track (which isn’t that much of a stretch, considering Rivers is practically a member of Young Money at this point) and, oddly enough, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, who lends her vocals to a pair of songs on the album, one of which also features Eminem. Needless to say, the idea of Hayley and Em sharing vocal duties raised our eyebrows just a bit, which is why we sent an e-mail to the Paramore frontwoman to ask her all about the song and just how she ended up appearing on B.o.B’s record in the first place. “I was given the track a while ago while we were on tour. The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up,” Williams told MTV News. “I liked the part too much anyways, so of course I was down. “I only found out about Eminem getting on the track like a month ago. As if the song couldn’t get any better. He just slays me, he’s such a genius. And I’m a big B.o.B fan. Got everything of his that I’ve been able to get my hands on,” she continued. “Whether our fans know or not, I’m not sure, but [Paramore bassist ] Jeremy [Davis] and I have always been really into hip-hop. It means a lot that I got to collaborate with a hip-hop artist who is from Atlanta. Not far from home. We Southern gals love us some Southern gentlemen.” Williams appears solo on a song called “Airplanes,” and then she’s joined by Eminem on an album-closing reprise, which, appropriately enough, is called “Airplanes (Part II).” But what do the tracks sound like? Well, Williams wouldn’t tell us much, which means Paramore fans are just gonna have to wait until B.o.B’s album drops April 27. “Both versions of the track are incredible, that’s all I’ll say,” she wrote. “I’m so proud to be a part of this!” Are you excited to hear Hayley’s collabos with B.o.B? Usher Dicusses Racy Lyrics On ‘Lil Freak’: ‘It Happens’

Singer says latest single was inspired by real-life experiences. By Shaheem Reid Usher Photo: MTV News It’s not just lyrics — Usher said that when he sang about asking girls to get him girls on the track “Lil Freak,” he wasn’t just entertaining. The song was inspired by real life. “Yeah,” he laughed when asked if he gets female friends to scout and bring him other females to engage in group fun. “I mean, I wrote about it,” he continued. “It happens in this day and time. Those are the best chicks to be friends with, honestly.” “Hey girl, I see you like that,” he sings on the track. “You gettin’ excited/ You rockin’ like a pro with it, girl/ By the way, you got right on that/ Picked the chick you wanted/ And now you in the corner kissin’ on a girl/ I’m about to have a minaj with these here ladies/ Look at those freaks at the bar looking for a star.” The video for “Lil Freak” recently premiered and in the clip Nicki Minaj, rocks a sexy Cruella DeVil hairstyle — half black, half blond. She helps lure a woman into Usher’s underground playground. “The video is freaky,” Nicki told MTV News recently about the six-minute-plus video. “And it’s a great concept, a great story line. It felt just like one of the sequels to ‘Saw.’ It was dope.” “Lil Freak” along with the singles “Papers” and “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” are on Usher’s upcoming Raymond v. Raymond, in stores March 30. Ludacris Says He And Tiger Woods Should Talk

‘Let’s go play some golf and talk about it,’ Atlanta MC says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Ludacris and Sway Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Ludacris poked fun at Tiger Woods’ sex scandal on the intro to his new track “Sexting” from his forthcoming Battle of the Sexes album (due March 9), intimidating the embattled golf star’s frantic voice mail to one of his alleged mistresses. But the Atlanta rapper said there are no hard feelings behind the jab. “If I’m making fun of Tiger Woods, I’m also making fun of myself,” Luda told MTV News from Madison Square Garden before he took the stage Wednesday (February 24). On the Neptunes-produced song, “Sexting,” Luda raps about his own tale of sex addiction. “My girl went through my cell phone,” he spits, explaining how he got caught. Throughout the track, the Luda-as-Tiger voice mail plays. Luda said the track is only a reflection of reality. “This is what happens,” he explained of the inspiration behind the song. “So I’m just bringing to light what’s really going on in the world .” So, does Luda have a take on Tiger’s message to his mistress? “It’s very entertaining,” he laughed. “And I do feel as though he may have handled it wrong.” Ludacris, however, said he’d offer Tiger some advice — especially if the golf legend feels slighted by song. “I would say, ‘Let’s go play some golf and talk about it,’ ” he offered. “I take that back — I’d say, ‘Let’s go to the sex-rehab place together and let’s discuss it. Let me know where your sex-rehab place is and I’ll let you know where mine is. We got some things to get off our chest.’ Related Artists Ludacris

Lil Wayne And Eminem’s ‘Drop The World’ Video To Premiere Next Month

Clip premieres March 11 on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez and Ryan J. Downey Eminem and Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Lil Wayne and Eminem will come together once again when MTV premieres the video for “Drop the World,” the acclaimed rappers’ landmark collaboration, on March 11. Lil Wayne feverishly filmed a series of music videos in the weeks leading up to what he thought would be his last day of freedom two weeks ago, before dental surgery postponed his prison sentence . Director David Rousseau told MTV News that the Cash Money superstar recorded up to nine videos in one weekend, though most were in front of a green screen so his image could be added later to the finished clips. Wayne was definitely on the set for the Chris Robinson-directed “Drop the World,” however, which was filmed the night before the pair performed a snippet of the track, the next single from Wayne’s Rebirth album, at the Grammys . Robinson told MTV News he was very conscious of the heavy weight carried by both hip-hop superstars, likening the onscreen collaboration to a cinematic counterpart: “How did Scorsese put Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio in the same movie?” And while he wouldn’t reveal the premise driving the video, he promised it will match the song’s intensity. “As a director, it’s how do you, more than anything, combine these two artists together and create something that’s special,” he explained. “Because when you have two artists together, it’s like, ‘Oh, they’ll stand next to each other [and that’s it].’ It’s very awkward sometimes to have two very big stars. How are you gonna cover that? Especially two artists that are so big. You can do that with a performance at the Grammys, because the spectacle is to watch them onstage and sit in the audience and look at it. But as an artistic piece to have some magic, or if it’s a mood piece or whatever way you communicate the music, you have to take two people into consideration with how you do that. “You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together, and the way that the song is constructed is great,” he continued. “Because unless you see it coming, you don’t know Eminem is on the track. The first two hooks and the first two verses are all Wayne, and it’s kind of a surprise when Eminem comes through, and we matched it visually how Eminem enters the piece. From the concept and to just hearing the lyrics, with both of these amazing lyricists killing it, the whole video is just energy.” Wayne is scheduled to begin his one-year jail sentence in New York on March 2 after undergoing eight root canals. Kanye West’s New ‘Coldest Winter’ Video Is ‘Haunting,’ Director Says

Nabil Elderkin calls clip, premiering this week, ‘minimalistic, slow and very visual.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Kanye West continues to release videos for 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak album as the rapper is set to debut the latest, “Coldest Winter,” this week. The clip was helmed by frequent collaborator Nabil Elderkin who also directed West’s “Paranoid” (featuring a cameo by Rihanna) and “Welcome to Heartbreak.” Elderkin said for “Coldest Winter,” one of the most personal records on the emotional project, based on West’s past relationship with his former fiance and the lost of his mother, the video isn’t as intense as their previous work together. “It’s pretty minimalistic,” he said. “It’s slow and very visual. I just wanted to catch the vibe of the song and not get too literal. Because the lyrics are very close to Kanye and go much deeper than the video goes, obviously hearing the song you know it’s very emotional.” In the track, West, replete with an ominous AutoTune-tinged quality to his voice, express his dismay over a lost loved one. “Goodbye my friend, will I ever love again?” he croons repeatedly throughout the track. The director wrote the treatment for the project and described the final product as a boundary-pushing effort compared to their past work. According to Elderkin, the pair experimented in the visual medium in a way they haven’t ever done before. He said the process was more challenging for him, particularly since West wasn’t a part of the editing process and only saw the final version. The MC, however, approved the finished product. The final version even includes a revamped version of the track, according to Elderkin. “This is definitely more of a haunting one,” he said of the number. ” ‘Cause this is sort of a remix. I don’t think anyone has heard this version of the song. He did some really amazing sound work to this one. This one he got into his production a little bit more.” At press time, the debut date for the “Coldest Winter” video had not been announced. Related Artists Kanye West
