Game Skipped A Pre-Jail Video With Lil Wayne To Record With Dr. Dre

‘When Dre is mixing, you don’t leave,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of failing to shoot an ‘Everything Red’ clip. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne and Game Photo: Black Wall Street Celebrity Favorites If he would have just gotten on a plane from L.A. to Miami, the Game could have added to Lil Wayne’s pre-prison video-shoot marathon . The Compton MC said one of the standout cuts from his Red Room mixtape , “Everything Red,” was supposed to be a single from The R.E.D. Album, but he didn’t shoot a visual. “I flaked on the video,” Game said of the track, which features Lil Wayne and Birdman. “Bird was like, ‘Listen, daddy, you can come down here. Junior is gonna turn himself in next Wednesday. You can come down here. We can shoot the video before Junior go in. You just have that in the safe.’ I blew it. I didn’t make it down. Once he went [to jail], I was like, ‘I can’t use this.’ I didn’t want to save it, so I gave it away. That was like, ‘Single!’ ” So what was so important that he couldn’t make it to Miami for his own video? He was finishing up tracks with the most successful hip-hop producer in the world. “I think I was in with Dr. Dre. I couldn’t move,” he thought back. “I think we was finishing up his records. When Dre is mixing, you don’t leave. You gotta stay posted. But I couldn’t move. So I gave it away. Fans appreciate it, though.” One of the Dre-produced records that will appear on his album is called “Dead People.” On the track, Game thinks of who he wants to murder and how he’s going to get away with it. The R.E.D. Album has been pushed back to later this summer, but the MC promised another mixtape before then. Kanye West’s ‘Power’: What Do Fans Think?

‘It sounds really victorious,’ one fan tells MTV News of ‘Ye’s first new music in months. By James Dinh Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage It’s been months since we’ve heard from Kanye West , so it makes sense that so many fans are hungry for new music from the rapper. On Friday (May 28), a brand-new track called “Power” leaked online. MTV News wanted to know what fans thought of the song, so we ventured into New York’s Times Square to hear what was on their minds. Many music fans couldn’t have been more pleased with “Power.” “It sounds like how he used to. I like him back when he first came out. It was like a throwback,” Kalu Ohator told MTV News. “It sounds really victorious.” Another fan, Adrienne Smith, enjoyed the track because of its uniqueness. “It’s got a cool mix of kind of tribal music,” she said. Despite the VMA fiasco , Smith believes Kanye’s boldness ultimately gives the rapper an advantage. “I think Kanye’s really good about highlighting maybe some of the things we don’t want to think about in terms of American culture, but he does it in such a clever way, and he always had that little bit of arrogance that is Kanye,” she said of the song’s lyrics. Shirin Taki was pleased with the track’s originality. “I liked it. I thought that it was really unique. He has good style. He’s always putting on something new,” she gushed, noting that the rapper always has something great up his sleeve. While some fans enjoyed “Power,” others thought it could have been better. “It started well, and I thought it had potential, but then it kind of just carried on the same and got a bit boring and repetitive,” Haley Heathfield said. In the end, one fan suggested that it really might not be all about the music. “It was good. It seemed a little racy,” Richard Malkling Jr. said. But despite West’s ability to make great music, Malkling couldn’t ignore the rapper’s egotistical past. “He’s always got good lyrics, but I don’t know … too much power for one man.” What did you think of “Power”? Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Will Settle Gaga Debate, Songwriter Says

‘Once the album comes out … I don’t think the comparisons will last,’ says Claude Kelly. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Photo: RCA Fans have already gotten a pretty good taste of what they can expect from Christina Aguilera ‘s upcoming album, Bionic, out June 8. In addition to the singles “Woohoo” and “Not Myself Tonight,” other tracks from the disc have leaked online. Despite rumors that worries about the album’s success are what prompted Aguilera to postpone her summer tour to 2011, songwriter Claude Kelly said it will be the album of the summer. “I’m excited about Christina,” Kelly told MTV News at the “Sex and the City 2” premiere, where he also dished about working with Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson on their track for the flick. Kelly said that he enjoyed hitting the studio with Aguilera to cook up some choice tunes for the release. “I did ‘Woohoo,’ which is the single out now,” he shared about the track that also features Nicki Minaj. “I did ‘Glam, which is kind of like futuristic, kind of an homage to ‘Vogue’ by Madonna. [I did] a song called ‘Vanity.’ [I did one called] ‘I Hate Boys.’ She has a fun record coming out.” Aguilera’s look during TV appearances and videos of late has led some Lady Gaga fans to accuse Christina of biting Gaga’s style . Kelly said the two pop queens couldn’t be more different. “I will say that there’s room for everybody,” he said. “I also know Gaga as well. She’s incredible. They really are honestly two different powerhouses. Once the album comes out and they hear what Christina’s doing, I don’t think the comparisons will last. But, I mean, at the end of the day, they’re both amazing women.” Are you looking forward to Christina’s new album? Tell us in the comments! Taio Cruz Sexts With Ke$ha In ‘Dirty Picture’ Video

The clip ends with the two together at a sexy house party. By Jocelyn Vena Taio Cruz Photo: MTV News Taio Cruz ‘s new clip for his track “Dirty Picture,” which on Monday (May 24), opens with the singer speeding through the desert alone. Before long Cruz is at a house party where everyone is drinking and sending pretty PG-rated dirty texts, a fitting idea considering the song is all about sexting. All Cruz wants his lady friend to do is “take a dirty picture.” While Cruz is grinding up against some of the female revelers at the bash, enter Ke$ha , all dolled up, hanging out in the ladies’ room responding to Cruz’s call to arms, asking that her man do the same. Then we’re back in the desert with Cruz, who’s thinking about his woman again. And once again we’re back at the party, and it seems that there’s not one person who isn’t getting into the sexting action, kissing, touching and bumping and grinding as the flashes flash. Ke$ha’s role in the video is limited; eventually she and Cruz are hanging out while elsewhere ladies are getting alcohol poured all over them. The video ends with Cruz and Ke$ha canoodling, telling their loved ones to “click, click, snap” that dirty picture their way. Cruz recently talked to MTV News about working with Ke$ha on the track, noting that Lady Gaga was his initial choice. But Ke$ha won him over after producer Dr. Luke told him all about her. “She looked really sexy, and I just thought she was talented. Her voice was awesome,” he said. “It had this — I hope she won’t mind me saying this, but her voice has this kind of yodely quality to it, the way that she does things and the way that she ends words. I just loved that quality about it.” Related Artists Taio Cruz Ke$ha

Kevin Jonas Reveals His Pole-Vaulting Past On ‘When I Was 17’

‘People laughed at me for a while about that one,’ the pop star says of his track days. By MTV News staff Kevin Jonas Photo: MTV News These days, Kevin Jonas makes a living as a pop star along with his superstar brothers, Joe and Nick. But there was a time when Kevin had to mow lawns for pocket money and, back in his after-school days, Kevin was a member of the track team. Yes, Kevin Jonas used to be a jock. “When I was 17, my favorite sport was pole vaulting,” Kevin recalled in this week’s episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” which also features stories from Katharine McPhee and Bret Michaels . “Freshman year of high school, my history teacher actually asked me. He’s like, ‘You’re going to join the track team. You should be a pole vaulter.’ ” After some skepticism about doing it and initially being confused by what was expected of him as a pole vaulter, Kevin quickly changed his mind. “I was like, ‘Oh, OK. Whatever.’ And then I realized what pole vaulting was,” he remembered. “And I was like, ‘Yes! Please!’ ” In the episode, Kevin’s uncle Josh shared just how much Kevin enjoyed the sport. “He loved it — he loved the challenge, always tried to go higher, the extra next level.” Now, Kevin spends his time at “Camp Rock,” but back in the day at high school in New Jersey, it was all about Camp Track. “Pole vaulting was my passion. I even went to a pole-vaulting camp, yeah,” he said. “People laughed at me for a while about that one, but it was cool.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kevin Jonas, Bret Michaels and Katharine McPhee — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’ Came Together ‘Magically,’ Smeezingtons Say

‘We’re melody guys, we sing,’ Phillip Lawrence says of production trio, which includes Bruno Mars. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News The making of B.o.B’s breakout hit “Nothin’ on You” was a group effort, according to the song’s producers. Bruno Mars , who is featured on the track, said he and his production partners, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — together they comprise the Smeezingtons — collectively pieced together the music that would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” Mars told MTV News, spontaneously breaking out into the chorus that is helping to make him one of music’s buzzed-about names. “It was a different melody at first, though,” Lawrence added. “So one day our other partner — the Silent Bob of the Smeezingtons — Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over],” Mars explained. “It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” The result, of course, was “Nothin’ on You,” which landed atop the charts this year and has become an early contender for song of the summer. Now, the production trio’s services are increasingly in demand. Among the artists they’re hoping to get in the studio with is Keri Hilson, who’ll be prepping her next album. Apart from B.o.B, the Smeezingtons also recently worked with Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo on Mars’ debut EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, and are hoping to get back in the lab with him. (“He’s incredible,” Mars said of Cee-Lo.) And their remix of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” has been selected as the Coca-Cola anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Smeezingtons intend to apply the same principles that have brought them success so far to future projects, including Bruno Mars’ forthcoming full-length debut. “We’re melody guys, we sing,” Lawrence explained of their sound. “That’s kind of our main focus, to have really good, memorable melodies. We’ll go into the studio, and [Mars will] start playing the piano and I’ll start freestyling or vice versa. We’re heavily influenced by the ’80s [sound].” Are you looking forward to new material from the Smeezingtons? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists B.o.B

Jay Electronica, Diddy Debut ‘The Ghost Of Christopher Wallace’

Song inspired by late rapper Notorious B.I.G. features his former producer and friend. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Invoking the Notorious B.I.G. ‘s name in rhyme can be overwhelming for any MC, but upstart MC Jay Electronica took the challenge in stride. The New Orleans rapper released a new track on Friday (April 30) boldly titled “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” The song even features the iconic late rapper’s old producer and friend Diddy, who’s up to his old ad-libbing antics on the track. But Jay Elect said the song was meant to inspire a mood more than serve as a tribute to the slain rap superstar. “I like a lot of the music that’s out [now], but I don’t get excited like I used to get about rap music,” he told Shade 45 morning host Angela Yee. “More often than not when I click on new music and it feels good and I like it, it can be good, it can be great, but I don’t necessarily get that feeling I used to get. I just think when Big was around, that time period when people used to rhyme, it was more than just the rhyme and the skill, it was the spirit of the person that you could tap in to. I really wanted to invoke that energy.” The rapper said he recruited the song’s producer, Quincey Tones, via Twitter and offered Diddy a sneak peek of the song. The Bad Boy Records mogul approved of the track and offered to hop onboard. “Fasten your seatbelts,” Diddy whispers after Jay’s rap: “All aboard, it’s the last train, Soul train/ A bottle of Ciroc will turn a private jet to Soul Plane/ Put your seats back and trays down and feet up, ’cause we about to heat up.” In the track, still unfinished according to the rapper’s manager, Jay Electronica continues his trend of literary references in rhyme, as he name-checks “War and Peace” author Leo Tolstoy as well as Dostoyevsky. “The flow’s so Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoy, half oyster, half shrimp, fully dressed po-boy,” he raps. Jay Electronica is currently working on a number of projects, including a collaborative effort with Nas and another with Mos Def and Curren$y.
