Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness Turns Breakup Into ‘Sun & Moon’

Trance group gears up for Miami music week with their newest single. By Adam Stewart Tony McGuinness Photo: MTV News For Above & Beyond , and their loyal following, these are exciting times. With Miami’s annual Anjunabeats party on the horizon (at the Ice Palace on March 24), and their highly anticipated second studio album, Group Therapy, out in June, 2011 is shaping up to be a massive year for the U.K. trance trio. The album’s first single and video , “Sun & Moon,” recently hit the Web, and MTV News had the chance to catch up with one third of the collaborative, Tony McGuinness who gave us a little insight into the story behind song. “It was written about the same girl [Katy] that a lot of our early songs were written about,” McGuinness told MTV News. “It was a contender for the OceanLab album [ Sirens of the Sea ], but for many reasons, it didn’t make it on. It’s gone through a number of incarnations, and I think the reason why we were really happy for it to be the first single is that the sound of it is very now. … It is kind of classic Above & Beyond, a sad song — and that’s sort of what we do. I think when we do it well, we do it as well as anybody. That’s kind of our trademark, really.” The video, directed by Ferry Gouw, stars Alex Childs and Steve Cato as a feuding couple who have entered that “one last try” phase of a failing relationship that ends in a breakup. Eventually, she leaves him, and he turns to music and dancing for comfort. “I think everybody that you spend time with in your life, you learn from and grow through that period, and certainly that was true with Katy,” he explained. “So, she’s in my past, she’s a ‘failed relationship,’ but to me it was anything but a failure. And that’s what this song’s really trying to say, you know, whatever experiences you have, romantic or otherwise with people, there’s always a part of that relationship that lives on in your memory, hence the line, ‘You’ll never get over me, I’ll never get over you.’ I think those things are important. We’re still friends. I’m not sure how she feels about me writing about the darker parts of our relationship all the time, but, you know, I think that’s part of the inspiration that you get from other people.” McGuinness defines “Sun & Moon” as a sequel to the smash single “Alone Tonight”, from 2006’s Tri-State. “I really wanted to make sure that we represented the album, which I think ‘Sun and Moon’ does,” McGuinness said. “[It’s] smack back in the middle of what the album’s about. So I think sonically and musically and lyrically, it’s a very good advert for the album.” Will you be checking out Above & Beyond at their annual Anjunabeats party at the Ice Palace in Miami on March 24? YouTube Sensation Mr. Plinkett Branches Out With Weekly Review Show

Red Letter Media’s Mike Stoklasa finishes evisceration of ‘Star Wars,’ creates ‘Half in the Bag’ to skewer movies on more regular basis. By Shawn Adler Mike Stoklassa Photo: Logan Jacobs His video eviscerations of the “Star Wars” prequels were among last year’s most anticipated, widely viewed online videos, garnering millions of views, inspiring new discussions of copyright in the digital age , and making celebrity fans ranging from Simon Pegg to Roger Ebert. But now that Mike Stoklasa, aka Mr. Plinkett, has finished carving up George Lucas — his “Revenge of Nadine: Episode III Review Epilogue” dropped Thursday (March 10) — the Milwaukee based writer/director turned millennial critic is breaking out the entire cutlery set for his next target. And this time, nobody will be safe, Stoklasa laughed in an interview with MTV News. Titled “Half in the Bag,” Stoklasa and friend Jay Bauman have launched a new online review program which will skewer current Hollywood movies in a more traditional review format, a “mix between ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ and ‘At the Movies,'” Stoklasa revealed in an email conversation. Their first effort, which imagines the pair as VCR repairmen sent to Mr. Plinkett’s house, premiered late Friday evening (March 11). The show is an attempt to cross something like “Siskel and Ebert” with a 80s era sitcom, Stoklasa explained, with the two hosts sitting across from each other while discussing new releases. For Stoklasa, it means that for the first time he’ll be lobbing critical bombs in front of the camera, rather than from behind, a switch he said he made, not without some trepidation, to avoid “the same old thing.” “I was a bit concerned with revealing the ‘man behind the curtain,’, but it’s just not in my nature to go on doing the same thing. If I did that people would say ‘The Plinkett reviews are getting old and worn out,'” he wrote. “We don’t want things to stay the same.” An expansion of and not a replacement for the trademark video stylings of Mr. Plinkett, the program is also an attempt to “make new material for people on a regular basis” while avoiding the labor intensive process inherent in the earlier reviews, Stoklasa wrote. “I like talking about movies and analyzing them, but sometimes it’s fun to deviate into other things and the traditional Mr. Plinkett reviews just take a really long time to make,” he wrote. “I will still continue to make the Mr. Plinkett reviews where I do the voice and everything, but we’re going to do this too.” But not all will be different, Stoklasa cautioned. Fans of his earlier reviews will see a familiar through-line, he said, as the program will contain cutaways, random sound effects, and even skits, such as a portion of the first review where George Lucas comes to destroy their set. Of those familiar tropes, perhaps the most familiar will be Plinkett himself, who will appear to audiences in front of the camera played by Rich Evans. “We toyed with the idea of never showing his face and me dubbing over all of his lines, but it would have been very time consuming to light that for each shot and to have to do all the ADR,” Stoklasa wrote. “Plus, I think Rich is funny in the part, he adds a lot to the role and makes it his own. Rich is really great with awkward physical comedy and comes up with a lot of good ideas on set. Hopefully people will appreciate that there is ‘Plinkett A’ and ‘Plinkett B’ and to understand that Plinkett A is not going away.” Since the show takes place in the fictional construct of Mr. Plinkett’s living room, where the pair are on a never ending quest to fix an old VCR, Stoklasa believes there’s room to criticize not just new movies, but any film that Plinkett might have in his expansive video catalogue, meaning that while the first episode centered on new films like “Drive Angry” and “The Adjustment Bureau,” older films are not off-limits. “The format is open to us doing anything,” he said. “We’ll probably wind up with more current stuff for the primary reviews, but we’ll do old B-movies and stuff like that too. We love terrible old B-Movies quite a bit and I have a sick fascination with movies that are so bad they’re funny.” For now, “the hope is to do it weekly,” Stoklasa wrote. The next episode of “Half in the Bag” premiers early next week.

Wiz Khalifa’s ‘The Race’ Hits The Net

Pittsburgh rapper recently described laid-back single to MTV News as a ‘swag song.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers is arriving song-by-song ahead of its March 29 release date. The latest record to spring forth onto the Web is “The Race,” a breezy number about the Pittsburgh rapper’s rise to the top. “I’m in the race and taking the winner’s place,” Wiz says, delivering the hook in his trademark melodic flourish over I.D. Labs’ production work. “No foot on the breaks/ One of the best homey, that’s what they call me/ It’s lonely at the top, ain’t no company/ So now I just stunt on my own, I just stunt on my own.” Last year, Wiz described the track as a “swag song,” calling it “an attitude, ‘doing what we do’-type thing,” he explained. “Every song, they were like, ‘Man, this is going to the radio. You could go to the radio with that,’ ” Wiz said when he previewed the collection for a select group in Los Angeles. “So they are good songs, but they are also songs that are going to be accepted widely.” “I’ve got to stick to what I know, what I’ve been doing,” he added. “My main producers have been doing the bulk of the album, and it’s majority done. We’re just doing the big songs now, putting some of the features together, but really, it’s more personal. You get to see me and feel me more as a person, but it’s still that same edgy, that same rawness that people dig.” What do you think of Wiz’s new song, “The Race”? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber ‘Real Hairstyle’ Dolls Keep Swoop Alive

We hit a New York toy fair for scoop on the latest dolls, including a first look at an mp3-equipped, purple Bieber tour bus. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Brian Jacks Justin Bieber figure Photo: MTV News If you’re still mourning the loss of Justin Bieber’s luscious locks , there’s some news that could very well perk you up (and, no, it hasn’t grown back yet). Just days before the “Never Say Never” star chopped off his trademark coif, toy company Bridge Direct debuted Justin Bieber “Real Hairstyle” dolls at the American International Toy Fair in New York. MTV News caught up with George Vorkas of Bridge Direct, who give us the rundown on everything fans can expect from the doll, whose retail price is set at $17.99 and is slated to hit shelves this August. After the company received complaints about their first Bieber model, which featured plastic hair, Vorkas and his associates gave the 2011 model “real” hair. “This year, we have Justin with hair. Every girl at home can now play with his hair and style it the way they want,” Vorkas explained. In addition to styling their toy Biebs — like the original, it “sings,” only this time newer hits like “U Smile” and “Never Say Never” have been added — fans can also put him on the road. The company has created a purple (naturally) Bieber tour bus, complete with a functioning mp3 player dock and a stage setup that includes guitar, drums, keyboard and the heart-shaped cage he featured on his most recent tour. “As Justin does new things with his stage sets, we’ll be coming out with matching toys,” Vorkas assured us. (The stage sets and tour bus will go for a whopping $79.99.) And that’s not the only way the company plans to evolve with the ever-changing pop phenom. While the 2011 doll features a variety of Bieber-inspired accessories and outfits, collectors and/or purse string-opening parents can also expect ever-changing fashions from the “Baby” singer. As Vorkas told MTV News, “When Justin changes into a new outfit, we’ll also be coming out with that outfit.” Will you buy the “real hairstyle” Justin Bieber doll? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber Wax Statues Will Feature Old Hairstyle

Madame Tussauds figures will debut in March. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ Getty Images This March, Justin Bieber’s wax likeness will be hitting three Madame Tussaud’s wax museums. Outposts in London, New York and Amsterdam will all house statues of the teen pop sensation. And, since Bieber decided to have his trademark locks lopped off last weekend, fans may be wondering what kind of hairstyle the statues will feature. Well, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the likenesses will in fact sport Bieber’s signature swoop. “We have been absolutely inundated with requests from young fans from around the world to see him,” Liz Edwards, head of PR at Madame Tussauds, explained. “We’re sure his fans will be just as delighted as we are that Justin will be joining the A-list.” THR further reported that Bieber will be the headlining act at the museum’s music zone, an interactive area that also features stars like Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake. It’s reported that Bieber sat for his statue late last year. “We’re capturing a moment in time,” Bret Pidgeon, general manager of Madame Tussauds New York, told E! News about the statue. “Capturing what he looks like right now.” Pidgeon also hinted about the hair that would appear on the statue. “We’re going to wait to see how the new haircut takes with the fans … It’ll be part of the excitement for the final launch day,” he added, noting that Bieber will be on hand at one of the unveilings. Reps for the museum never responded to MTV News’ request for further information by press time. “I’m honored to be getting my own wax figures,” Bieber said in a press statement . “To be immortalized in wax alongside some of my idols — Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyonce and my mentor, Usher — is incredibly exciting and very cool.” A long line of other music stars also have had their likenesses cast in wax for display at Madame Tussauds locations. In the past few years, teen idols like the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and even Lady Gaga have all received the honor from the famed institution. Do plan to visit a Madame Tussauds to check out Justin’s wax figure? Let us know in the comments. Justin Bieber Cuts His Hair

Justin Bieber at the NBA All Star Game NBA All Star Weekend MVP and teen sensation, Justin Bieber, 17, has cut his trademark locks. The Bieber has opted for a choppy cut to give him an older look. I think he looks better with a smoother cut or maybe some spikes. Justin Bieber before the haircut There was also nothing wrong with his previous haircut, as it was a bit shorter than his original do, but still versatile enough to undertake onstage hair tosses. Just teasing. Hey, it’s his hair. He can cut it however he pleases. Justin Bieber after the haircut In other Biebster news, he has reportedly sent a massive amount of flowers to his 18-year-old girlfriend, actress, Selena Gomez. He is trying to woo the actress he has been spotted with many times in the past few months. Aww, I think I’m gonna cry. Not really. But that’s still sweet. Selena Gomez And if any Bieber fans are reading this, I can’t believe he gave that little bimbo flowers! Yuck! Gross! (Because I care about my site hits – don’t mess with Bieber fans unless you want your site to tank like Lindsay Lohan at a liquor store). Jersey Shore Recap: Sloppopatumus Unclogged!

In the aftermath of Sammi’s exit from Jersey Shore last week, Ronnie was down in the dumps. The rest of the gang seemed focused more on absurd pranks. Despite the title, “The Great Depression” was lighter fare than more recent episodes, with fewer epic meltdowns and more bathroom humor – quite literally. As always, THG has broken down some of the top Jersey Shore quotes and scenes from the episode in our trademark +/- recap below. Let’s get to it: THAT’S JUST WRONG: Pauly’s discover was dirty even by JS standards. Right off the bat for using the show to pitch Britney Spears’ new music video . Videos, on MTV? What a concept! Plus 5 in hopes that this pattern continues. Despite being enraged every second she’s around, Ronnie mopes now that Sammi’s gone, whining non-stop in an all-out effort to grow a vagina. Minus 19 . Seriously, Jenni could take Ronnie. You can see the disgust on her face. Plus 4 . Sammi breaks down at home. Minus 10 for not making this a Sammi-free week, ’cause she’ll be back wearing her one white skirt/black top outfit in no time. The Situation attempts to give Ron-Ron a pep talk. On relationships. Minus only 2 , because it was nice of him to reach out, but talk about useless advice. Deena slams cake in Vinny’s face, then hides under a bed, only to struggle to get her ass, emblazoned with the words GO HARD on it, underneath. Plus 8. The prank war gets a nasty when droppings from the dog end up in Deena’s and Pauly’s beds. Practical jokes are awesome, but … fecal waste. Minus 10 . Vinny hijacks Snooki’s favorite stuffed animal, Crocodilly, dangling it from the deck in a stressful hostage situation. That’s how to mess with a girl! Plus 7 . Is it just us or is Snooki resembling Snarf from Thundercats? Minus 6 , because at least you never had to worry about Snarf getting naked every week. JERSEY SHORE UNCLOGGED : Vinny attempts to navigate the brown river. Ron totally is a girl. He’s eating himself silly amid all this grief, when he’s not crying of course. How else can one clog so many toilets? Minus 3 , or one point per. Which backed-up plumbing event was more unpleasant? The toilet, as pictured above, or what was going on inside Deena’s body? Forget it, let’s move on. Wash . Minus 4 because I spit out my coffee as Snooki prescribed it to Deena, saying it will so help her issue by causing a rainstorm for the butthole. My mind is blown. Pauly finds some ladies’ underwear in the can. “How are you supposed to get fresh in the bathroom with these dirty-ass drawers?” he muses. Seriously. Plus 9 . Plus 5 more for this line by Vinny, absolving himself of any possible tie to said dirty-ass drawers: “The girls I bring home wear no underwear.” Like a true PSA. Ronnie: “I’m glad I’ve got a penis.” Dude … no. Minus 3 . WHAT UP, GUYS! The gang raids the Smush Room to Snooki’s chagrin. Snook bags a “Mario Brother” named Jionni LaValle ! Plus 8 . But … Having been c*ck-blocked by none other than Jionni a few weeks back, Vinny sees an opportunity for revenge, excavating Snooki from the Smush Room. Plus 11 . Later, The Situation interrupts Vinny’s late-night activities by feeding him a burger. You know one of these days, someone’s going to try to pull The Rodeo . Plus 8 . Deena feels drunk and homesick after a night out at Karma. The Situation refers to her as a Sloppopatumus, which was funny but poorly-timed, so Plus only 4 . Ronnie somehow talks Deena down, and it’s actually sweet. Plus 7 . Minus 2 for me just getting emotional over this utter nonsense. TOTAL: +17. SEASON TOTAL: +194.

Flickedup.com: “Justin Bieber:Never say never”

The teen pop star with the trademark mop top wants to take over the world. Justin Bieber’s latest project is, at the movies. Will you catch the Bieber fever ? Brett Martin here in the flickedup virtual theater, thanks for watching. I have never been a big fan of teen pop. Monkees, David Cassidy, Leif Garret, Donny Osmond,Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus… I am not of fan of any of them, from any era. This Justin Beiber kid, with his film Justin Beiber:Never Say Never is a cut above other teen pop stars. Musically I am not a fan but this film does hold up a mirror to our society that is obviously in the midst of a pre-teen genuine youthquake. Basically Never Say Never is a concert movie packed with home videos and audition tapes. The interviews with his entourage of helpers makes this quite an interesting “behind the music” film. Even the most cynical of you out there may end up being Beiber believers after seeing this film. He comes from a humble background, he has strong family ties and a dedicated Christian faith. He is the first pop star to become famous via Youtube and he is not a biproduct of the Disney/Nicholodeon teeny pop factory. This movie, though its not for everyone, is a film that everyone can see. Some people in your family may enjoy it more than others and that, in my opinion, is worth the price of admission. This energetic portrait of the global superstar as a normal teenager from small-town in Canada, works. The Flick-o-meter gives Justin Beiber: Never say Never a four out of five. It runs about 15 minutes too long but really, when its the true story about a kid who never gave up on his dreams, who cares how long it is, right ?
