Experimental Airplane Goes Mach 6!

The X-51A WaveRider is an unmanned U.S. Air Force experimental aircraft capable of reaching hypersonic speeds (specifically, six times the speed of sound, or 4000 miles per hour) using new scramjet engine technology. Test flights began in December 2009 and continue today. – Design – The end of the Cold War and the transition from manned spyplanes like the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbird to satellite surveillance and unmanned, remote-operated spyplanes somewhat reduced the military's long-lived desire to develop a hypersonic high-altitude aircraft. Nevertheless, the air force did begin to fund the studies that led to the X-51 in the 1990s, taking advantage of NASA's own hypersonic research on previous prototypes like the X-43. To reach its extremely high velocities, the X-51 takes advantage of a new jet propulsion technology known as the scramjet. Previous high-speed aircraft, like the SR-71 Blackbird, used ramjets, which were once the speed kings of the jet world. However, within a ramjet engine, the air actually slows down to subsonic speeds, is then combusted with jet fuel and accelerated back to supersonic speeds, and finally used to propel the aircraft forward. A scramjet design allows the engine to burn fuel without slowing down the air as it enters the engine. Ramjet-powered aircraft never exceeded a few times the speed of sound, but this innovation means that future scramjet aircraft will travel several times as fast, perhaps even Mach 20 or more. added by: Armageddon_Now

Virginia Madsen on Scoundrels, Her Most Disappointing ’60s Experience and Her Lust For ‘Real Men’

After earning an Oscar nomination as the sultry object of a wine aficionado’s affection in Sideways , Virginia Madsen realized that there still weren’t many good film roles left for actresses. That’s why the 80’s sex symbol made the transition from the multiplex to mainstream television, and in her second-ever regular role on a network series, Madsen is tackling one of the biggest challenges of her career: balancing her well-honed dramatic talents while discovering comedy. The satisfying role is courtesy of ABC’ s summer dramedy Scoundrels , where Madsen stars as a headstrong mother of four who is determined to give her family an honest life after her husband (David James Elliott) is sentenced to prison. Last week, Madsen phoned Movieline to explain why actresses are fleeing to television, the time her brain literally exploded, and her secret to great onscreen (and offscreen) chemistry.

Terrafugia Flying Car Gets FAA Approval

The FAA's granted the Terrafugia Transition roadable airplane the exemption it needs to bring us closer to our dream of flying cars. The Terrafugia's been the best hope for a flying car since it made its maiden voyage last March. The vehicle is a two-seater plane powered by regular unleaded gas from your corner Shell station. When flown, the front propeller allows the Transition to travel at a speed of approximately 115 mph for a range of around 450 miles. According to Terrafugia, the plane can then be transitioned from aircraft into roadgoing vehicle in just 30 seconds with the same fuel source powering the front wheels of the aircraft. It can hit a speed of around 65 mph on the road and returns fuel economy of around 30 mpg. http://jalopnik.com/5575383/terrafugia-flying-car-gets-faa-approval added by: Sexirobot

Robert Pattinson Dishes on Eclipse Make Out Scenes, Twihards

If you listen to tabloid rumors, Robert Pattinson has either dumped Kristen Stewart or is about to be dumped by Kristen Stewart. But if you listed to this Twilight Saga star himself, well, you won’t hear anything at all about his real-life relationship. Still, Parade was able to get Robert to open up about kissing Kristen – in Eclipse , at least. Check out the following excerpts from Pattinson’s recent interview with that publication: On Edward/Bella lip locks : “Kissing felt a little bit more natural in Eclipse , even if there was plenty of it. In New Moon and Twilight it was always like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna kill you if I kiss you’ or something. It was always kind of odd. But, in this one, they both understand their situation a lot more, which makes it easier. It’s the first time Kristen and I have been able to just act like a normal couple.” On Edward wanting to wait : “Nowadays, everyone just goes around screwing everyone for no reason. Edward doesn’t really want to sort of cheapen his relationship with Bella, even though she’s pushing him to go all the way. He’s got this certain idea of how it should go with the love of his life. He wants to do it right and not just follow his base instincts. I guess I’m a bit old fashioned in that way as well.” So… are he and Kristen dating? “I guess people like stories, that’s my basic conclusion. They just want everything in our lives to be like Twilight. The truth is… that I wish I had a few more hours of sleep today so I could think of a better answer.” On dealing with Twihards : “I kind of made the transition in my head of not being freaked out by it… when it happens so often to you, you kind of actually look at people’s faces and see that they’re enjoying themselves, and it makes everything so much easier to accept. Everything becomes a lot easier.” Pattinson also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this week. He had a couple of hilarious interactions with Emma Roberts, which you can watch now in our Robert video section . Enjoy!

Steve Zahn on Treme and the Joys of ‘Magic Time’ in New Orleans

Perhaps the only endeavor more difficult than saving post-Katrina New Orleans was creating a television series that intimately captured the perspective of the disaster-torn city. But that is exactly what Steve Zahn and the ensemble cast of HBO’ s freshman series Treme have done under the guidance of The Wire ‘s David Simon and Eric Overmyer. Zahn portrays a passionate disc jockey and musician whose frustration with the Big Easy’s snail-like rebuilding pace leads to brilliant anti-administration country songs and random displays of passive-aggressive rage. As the series nears the end of its freshman season, Zahn phoned Movieline yesterday from his Kentucky farm to discuss his transition into television, his hope that Treme will cover the BP oil spill and the one biopic he’d love to headline.

D. Woods Says Diddy Influencing Her Post-Danity Kane Career

‘He’s an incredible business mind, so I took a lot of those things for myself,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena D. Woods Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images The ladies of Danity Kane have been lying low since the drama of their highly publicized breakup . Now D. Woods, who was kicked out of Danity Kane by the group’s former boss, Diddy , is ready to return to the music industry. Woods stopped by “The Mo’Nique Show” to perform “Legalize Me” off her new album, The Gray Area, due out later this year. And she admitted that as things were getting bleak for the future of Danity Kane, she knew that she wouldn’t be in the group for much longer. “I had to suck it up and just bow out gracefully,” she explained. “You put the pieces together. You know when you’re not gonna be there much longer, so that’s kind of how [I dealt with it]. And my mother, she set a wonderful example. I’m glad I had a really great teacher, and she was very proud of how I handled myself.” If she learned anything from the whole debacle it was by watching Diddy mold Danity Kane into the chart-topping success they once were. “He’s an incredible business mind, great marketing, visionary. So I took a lot of those things for myself,” she said. “And of course I’m remixing them and now I have my own label imprint, and guess who the first artist is: me!” With a new label of her own and a new album ready to go, Woods says that making The Gray Area was the best way to vent about her experiences. ” The Gray Area is a collection of songs that I made through this transition period,” she said. “And instead of being depressed or down on myself or unproductive, I got in my studio and did what I do. That’s been my therapy. I have a lot that I haven’t even shown the world.” What do you think of D. Woods’ new song? Are you looking forward to what she does next? Tell us in the comments below!
