Have a 2004-2007 Prius? Toyota is Recalling 650,000 Hybrids Over Coolant Risk

Photo: Flickr , CC Voluntary Recall If you own a Toyota Prius with a model year between 2004 and 2007, you should probably keep an eye on the mailbox for a letter from Toyota. The company has announced a voluntary recall of 650,000 Prius hybrids (about 390,000 are in North America, 180,000 in Japan and 70,000 in Europe, according to Toyota) to fix the cooling pump. This is a preventive measure; the pump could overheat and cause a loss of power, but so far there hasn’t been any reports of accidents or injur… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Steven Chu: China Giving U.S. a Clean Technology "Sputnik Moment"

Photos: Wikipedia, Public domain. Investing Now for a Better Future In a speech at the National Press Club, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu made the case for more R&D in the U.S., especially in the energy sector (“the 2010 federal budget is $3.6 trillion, of which 0.14 percent went for research and development related to energy”). Dr. Chu explains why this is essential for both economic development and to meet environmental challenges, and he compares China’s progress in clean technologies and energy to the wake up call that was the launch of the Sputnik satellite by the Soviet Union…. Graphene Supercapacitor Breakthrough Offers Energy Density Comparable to NiMH Battery!

Photo: Wikipedia , CC But With all the Advantages of Supercapacitors As you can see above, graphene is a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms, very similar to carbon nanotubes , except for the “tube” part. This wonder-material has very interesting electrical properties that have allowed researchers to create a graphene-based supercapacitor that exhibits a “specific energy density of 85.6 Wh/kg at room temperature and 136 Wh/kg at 80 … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Chevy Volt Offically Rated at 93 MPGe in Electric Mode by EPA

Photo: EPA 37 MPG in Gasoline Mode, 60 MPG Composite Last week it was the Nissan LEAF’s turn to get its EPA sticker , and now it’s the Chevrolet Volt. GM’s plug-in hybrid is officially rated at 93 MPG-equivalent in electric mode and 37 MPG in gasoline mode, for a composite number of 60 MPG. But that number doesn’t mean much, since so much will depend on usage (short trips or long trips, how often you recharge, etc)…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Nissan LEAF Gets 99 MPG-e Rating from EPA

Image: U.S. EPA These Numbers Don’t Tell the Whole Story, Though… Nissan has announced that it has got the final LEAF electric car ratings from the EPA. As you can see on the sticker above, the LEAF is rated at 106 MPG-equivalent in the city and 92 MPG-equivalent on the highway, for a combined rating of 99 MPG-equivalent (more below on what “MPG-equivalent” actually means in this case). The electric driving range of the car as measured by the EPA is 73 miles, almost 30% lower than Nissan’s own estimate of 100 miles. In real-world driving, the LEAF’s range should vary quite a bit depending on … Read the full story on TreeHugger
