David Dao to United Airlines: Prepare to PAY UP!

WARNING to all future United Airlines passengers: Expect all upcoming luggage fees to increase by approximately 750%. The company is about to be in need of vast sums of money… At a press conference this afternoon, lawyer Tom Demetrio spoke on behalf of Dr. David Dao, the 69-year old passenger who was violently dragged off a United flight on Sunday night. As most of the free world has likely read all about by now, Dao refused to give up the seat he paid for while traveling from Chicago to Louisville. Because United had overbooked this flight, and no one had accepted the $800 offered to change their travel plans, the airline chose four individuals at random to leave the plane and take a later flight instead. Dao was one of the people selected and asked to get off the plane. He said he had patients to see early Monday morning, however, and remained in his seat. Until, that is, Chicago police officers were called in… tried to talk to Dao reasonably… and then said they were forced to do THIS:  United Airlines Passenger Gets Bloodied, Bruised, Forcibly Removed from Seat Because fellow passengers captured the incident on their cellphones, the above footage quickly went viral. As did the associated outrage. It didn’t help his company’s cause when the United CEO offered up one of the lamest apologies of all-time , saying his airline has to “re-accommodate” customers from time to time. That may be the case, Demetrio told the press today, but not in the manner as happened with Dao. “If you’re going to eject a passenger, under no circumstances can it be done with unreasonable force or violence. That’s the law,” he said. “For a long time, airlines – United, in particular – have bullied us. … We want respect and we want dignity. That’s it. Not a big deal.” Dao was taken to a hospital as a result of his one-sided confrontation with the police. Demetrio explained today that his client suffered a “significant concussion, a broken nose and sinus injuries.” He also said Dao, who was released from the hospital last night, lost two front teeth and will be undergoing “reconstructive surgery.”  So, naturally, Dao plans on suing United, right? The assumption is that the company will be forced to pay millions of dollars in some kind of settlement. “We’re not ready to sue. We’re doing our due diligence,” Demetrio said, although he was quick to add that a lawsuit basically is coming and ‘will be filed in Cook County.” The attorney further said that Dao had conveyed to him that he was on a boat out of Vietnam after the 1975 fall of Saigon, and “being dragged down the aisle was more horrifying and harrowing than what he experienced in Vietnam.” That’s fantastic. We love it. We’re in awe. We’re not trying to downplay the trauma of what Dao went through on board that plane, but come on. That’s just a tailor made quote to tell the public as a way to pressure United into forking over a whole lot of cash. Dao “has no interest in ever seeing an airplane again” and will likely take a car home to Kentucky, the lawyer said, adding that his client has “absolutely zippo” memory of the incident. The doctor himself previously spoke briefly to a news outlet in Louisville , saying “everything” was hurting. After issuing one tone deaf statement after another, United CEO Oscar Munoz finally came out on Tuesday and made a full-fledged mea culpa. “The truly horrific event that occurred on this flight has elicited many responses from all of us: outrage, anger, disappointment. I share all of those sentiments, and above all: my deepest apologies for what happened,” Munoz said, adding: “Like you, I continue to be disturbed by what happened on this flight and I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard. “No one should ever be mistreated this way.” One of Dao’s five children, Crystal, also talked to reporters today. She said the entire family was “horrified and shocked and sickened” by the footage of her dad getting dragged off the flight. Dao’s attorneys, meanwhile, have already filed documents in Chicago, demanding United preserve all evidence and personnel records related to his incident. It sucks Dao had to go through this. But he is about to be a VERY rich man.

Aubrey Marunde and Bristol Marunde: Meet the Stars of Flip or Flop: Las Vegas!

Aubrey and Bristol Marunde hope to be the next Tarek and Christina El Moussa. On the professional front, at least. Tarek and Christina filed to divorce in December, of course, and have been making headlines over the past few weeks for their revealing Instagram photos and passive aggressive shots at one another. But it’s easy to forget that they remain best known for their roles on Flip or Flop. The estranged husband and wife are still filming episodes of the HGTV home renovation series, in fact, as they await to learn whether the network picks up the show for Season 8 . It seems unlikely. However, executives are keen on expanding the franchise, having announced last month that FIVE Flip or Flop spinoffs  are on tap, none of which will feautre the El Moussas.  Instead, new couples will follow Christina and Tarek’s lead by purchasing dilapidated homes across the country, fixing them up and trying to sell them for a profit. The new shows will be based on Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Texas and Las Vegas. Explained Allison Page (general manager, U.S. programming and development for HGTV, Food Network and Travel Channel) in announcing this decision: “Because every market is unique, there was an opportunity to highlight what works in various regions by featuring successful people in different locations who had mastered the art of flipping in their town.” So… this brings us back to Aubrey Marunde and Bristol Marunde. The couple will anchor Flip or Flop: Las Vegas, which is the first spinoff to receive an air date and which will premiere on Thursday, April 6 at 9/8c on HGTV. What do we know about Aubrey and Bristol? Well… Bristol is 34 years old and competes as a mixed martial artist. The couple met in 2009 while watching an MMA fight in person with a group of friends. They went for coffee on their first date. And got married six years later in their backyard. “We decided right then and there that we wanted to settle down and be together,” Bristol tells HGTV of how great that first date went. They have a six-ear old son named Kale and a three-year old son named Kane. “Kale is just like me and pretty amazing when it comes to colors,” Aubrey explains, adding: “I handed him the huge paint swatch book yesterday and said, ‘I’m thinking light blue accent wall…’ He flipped through, and in about 30 seconds said, ‘This one.’ “It was the exact color I had picked from an online swatch book earlier in the day! It’s a pretty cool thing to see yourself shine through in your kids.” Aubrey bought her first home at age 20. They love animals. “Bristol is always bringing something home for the kids from job sites,” Aubrey says. “Last week, it was a huge lizard in a drywall bucket he found, and before that, a baby bunny.” The family has two dogs, two parakeets, two turtles, four chickens and two fish. Neither is a Las Vegas native. Aubrey moved to Sin City after high school from small town Milton, Pennsylvania; while Bristol grew up in Sequim, Washington. View Slideshow: HGTV Shows: RANKED! “I always knew I would own my own business, and the challenges of starting from nothing and building your business was exciting for me,” Aubrey tells the network. Will you give the new Flip or Flop a shot? Will the fact that this version features another pretty blonde and another well-muscled brunette bode badly for the couple’s future? We’ll soon find out!

Macy Gray’s New Song “White Man” Is Right On Time

Macy Gray is one of those artists who often gets overlooked until she releases a song you can’t ignore and you remember just how incredibly talented she is. Today, the five-time Grammy-nominated singer released a powerful anthem called “White Man” that pretty much sums up how most people of color feel living in Trump’s America right now. She sings in the first verse: Hey white man I am not my grandmother I’m from the city Canton, Ohio I’m just a lady but I think like a man You hating me and I don’t understand You judging me, you want to send me to hell God is my father and I got my band You come for me, let me make it clear [ madamenoire ] Should The Congressional Black Caucus Let An Afro-Latino Into Its Ranks? Should a Latino be allowed to join the Congressional Black Caucus? According to an article in last week’s Politico entitled “Black Caucus chafes at Latino who wants to join,” that’s the million dollar question currently being debated, albeit silently, by Caucus members on the Hill. The Latino in consideration is no other than (D-NY 13th District) Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who last November became the first Dominican-American elected to Congress. While he has not been formally asked to join the 47-year-old organization, he tells Politico writer Heather Caygle that he is currently in discussion with CBC leaders about the “pros and cons” of his potential membership. According to Caygle, more than a dozen CBC members and their aides were interviewed for the piece although very few of the CBC current leadership wanted to go on record, citing the “sensitivity” of the issue. Drake made the announcement at the Leeds, England stop in his Boy Meets World tour. “I’m excited because I’m about like a week and a half, two weeks away from finishing this project I’m working on called More Life,” he says in a fan captured video. “So you know what that means right? All that means is, I get to drop a new project, and at some point I get to come back and be with my people in Leeds one more motherf*cking time.” The playlist was originally set to drop last December, then it was pushed back to “early 2017.” Drake did not explicitly state when More Life would drop, but he did hint at a show in Amsterdam that it would be out by Feb. 28. Artist Shani Crowe Pays Homage To Cornrows In New Exhibit, BRAIDS

For centuries, braids have been making women of color feel powerful. To highlight how braids continues to make Black girls feel magical as well as the history of the intricately expressive hairstyle, Artist Shani Crowe decided to document her relationship with braids at Brooklyn’s Museum Of Contemporary African Disporan Arts (MoCADA). Appropriately titled, BRAIDS, Crowe told Refinery 29 what inspired her to curate such an exhibit. “As a child, I would get my hair braided every two weeks by one of my aunts or an older cousin. I picked up the skill from watching my relatives braid, and practicing on dolls. When I was around 11, and my aunts couldn’t execute the designs I wanted, I began braiding [on] my own. I was a walking advertisement for myself, and ended up attracting clientele,” Crowe said… [ MadameNoire ] Did You Know? Hotels Are No Longer Selling Hotel Rooms For many of us, a hotel room is usually used to store your belongings or sleep during a vacation but as of most recent, hotel chains want to change that. Now, they want their guests to have “experiences.” As we previously reported, brands like The Hilton want millennials to book hotel rooms to experience what the hotel has to offer and the adventures the hotel staff curate for guests. Similarly, CNN Travel reports, The Moxy, created by The Marriot doesn’t call their guests “guests,” instead, they call them “fun-hunters.” Tina Edmundson, who serves at the Marriot’s Global Brand Officer says, “They’re really excited, they’re full of life, they want to discover new things”… [ MadameNoire ] Frank Ocean Addresses Orlando Shooting and Homophobia rank Ocean turned heads back in 2012 when he clarified rumors of he being gay via his Tumblr account.
