Sky Sports News to go behind paywall in battle with Freeview broadcasters

Subscription model seen as best bet over long term, while analysts say Sky may load rival with poor content News Corporation is to put another of its services behind a paywall as it emerged yesterday that Sky Sports News is to be pulled from Freeview. BSkyB, which launched Sky Sports News on Freeview in 2002 with Sky News and Sky Travel, is to replace the channel with a one-hour timeshifted Sky 3+1 service later this year. Sky 3 replaced Sky Travel in 2005. Industry experts also believe that BSkyB could decide that its Sky News website, currently freely available on the internet, should go behind a paywall. The decision on Sky Sports News, which has an average daily reach of 2.1m according to television measuring service Barb, marks a significant shift in BSkyB’s attitude to the benefits of using the reach of the free-to-air service as a marketing channel to attract subscribers to its pay-TV service. With subscription charges about to start on the Times’s website as Rupert Murdoch’s media empire searches for new revenue streams, News Corp is undergoing a major restructuring of its business model. It is already looking to maximise revenues from its Sky TV channels by launching a bid for the 61% of the satellite broadcaster that it does not presently own. Despite the Sky Sports News service benefiting from advertising revenues on the Freeview platform, it is thought that BSkyB has decided that over the long term there is more advantage to be had from a subscription model. As part of the move, BSkyB is to boost editorial investment in Sky Sports News as it prepares to launch a high-definition service. When the service is removed from digital terrestrial service Freeview, it will be available on subscription services Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk TV. “As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe’s first HD sports news service,” said Barney Francis, the managing director of Sky Sports. BSkyB is seeking to pull valuable free content and boost the “must have” factor of its pay services ahead of rivals introducing cut-price Sky Sports packages for the next Premier League season. In April Sky was ordered to slash the price it offers Sky Sports 1 and 2 wholesale to rivals including Virgin Media and BT Vision . Alexander Wisch, an analyst at Standard & Poor’s Equity Research, said: “In my view if they are forced to sell key content, like sport, at regulated wholesale prices, why give out anything for free? “Its pay TV platform may be under threat from the wholesale issue so if anyone can soon offer Sky Sports [at highly competitive prices] then BSkyB will be asking what they can offer as added value to subscribers. They are looking to make the pay TV service more interesting, the destination for sport.” Wisch also believed that it was unlikely but not out of the question for BSkyB to be considering the long-term strategy of keeping Sky News on Freeview. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull other content out [of free platforms],” he said. “Sky News is important to them on Freeview, so far, and while I can’t see it coming off in the near term, I wouldn’t rule anything out.” BSkyB is expected to reach its highly publicised 10 million subscriber target this year. The weakening of Freeview would help shore up the pay-TV company’s longer-term position. Replacing Sky Sports News with a time-shifted version of Sky 3 was described by one former senior Sky executive as “a cheap way to fill airtime with relatively pointless TV”. BSkyB will pick up a fourth slot on Freeview when it takes over the Virgin 1 channel, assuming regulatory clearance is given to its £160m takeover of Virgin Media Television’s channels . BSkyB did not buy the licence to continue operating the Virgin 1 name. “Freeview delivers some advertising revenues for them, but is a potent rival for the pay TV platform, so they do benefit from a weaker Freeview, with a poorer content offering,” said one industry source. “Full conspiracy theory could see Sky put crap on the channel to make the inferior Freeview offering more so. Make a rival suffer, that is the pay TV way.” BSkyB Freeview Television industry Media business BSkyB Mark Sweney guardian.co.uk

Adam Lambert Predicts Crystal Bowersox Will Win ‘American Idol’

‘I like her anti-establishment rebelliousness,’ the ‘American Idol’ runner-up says of MamaSox. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Matt Elias Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Back in April, after a mentoring gig on “American Idol” had people buzzing that he should replace Simon Cowell behind the judges’ table next season, Adam Lambert revealed to MTV News which contestants he thought the most promising: Crystal Bowersox, Casey James, Lee DeWyze and Michael Lynche. [T]hose four really stand out as authentic, pure, amazing vocals,” Lambert said at the time. A month later, with Big Mike now out of the picture and Bowersox, James and DeWyze comprising this season’s top three, Lambert has come out in support of Bowersox to win the competition. “If I had to pick one out of those three, I’d probably lean more toward Crystal at this point,” he told us. “I like her anti-establishment rebelliousness.” In that choice, he’s echoing the consensus opinion that this season is Bowersox’s to lose. But, in fact, Lambert hasn’t had a chance to see what’s been going down on “Idol” in recent weeks. After a short, Icelandic volcano-induced delay in his travel plans, the season eight runner-up jetted off to Europe, where he performed in England, Holland and Finland. “I’ve been gone,” he said. “I haven’t been able to watch it.” Though he singled out MamaSox for special recognition, Lambert made sure to pay respects to all the remaining contestants, who face off again on Tuesday night (May 18), after enjoying hometown visits late last week. “All three of them are excellent singers,” he said. “They’re all really organic and kind of authentic in what they do. They’re all likeable. They were all really nice when I met them on set.” Who’s your favorite to win “Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Tiki Barber Accused of Traci Lynn Johnson Affair, Dumps Pregnant Wife Ginny Barber

In his worst career move since retiring one year before the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, Today Show correspondent and former NFL star Tiki Barber has dumped his wife, Ginny, for former NBC intern Traci Lynn Johnson, reports say. Tracy Lynn Johnson is just 23. They have two sons already and Ginny Barber is eight months pregnant with twins. A twin himself, you’d think Tiki would respect that. Then again, maybe Ronde Barber is really the one cheating. Think about it. Ginny found out about the scandalous relationship late last year. Johnson, a model-thin bombshell, was photographed sitting next to Tiki at a Washington, D.C., screening of a documentary on Senegal that he hosted for the Travel Channel. Traci Lynn Johnson: Tiki Barber mistress. Giants fan. Sources believe Johnson also accompanied Tiki to Senegal for the filming late last year, when Ginny was three months pregnant. The affair is particularly stunning in light of Barber’s long-standing disdain for his philandering father. Barber’s confidants were shocked at his conduct. One said: “We were shocked to find out that he could walk out on his wife of 11 years while she’s pregnant with twins. He was with this girl in Senegal while Ginny was three months pregnant. And we believe she was also with him at the Olympics in Vancouver.” Barber, who is believed to have relocated to an Upper West Side bachelor paid, released a statement yesterday in response to the Post story announcing the split: “After 11 years of marriage, Ginny and I have decided to separate,” Barber said. “This decision was a painful one, but we are moving forward amicably and will continue to work together to raise our children with the love and dedication they have always known.” Tiki and Ginny Barber in happier times. Tiki had no additional comment. Ginny is a former fashion publicist and full-time mom to the couple’s two sons, A.J., 7, and Chason, 6. She also declined comment. Man, first Tiger Woods . Then Jesse James. And now this. Now many more celebrity cheating scandals can we take? Too bad Tiki’s not following them to sex rehab.

Bryon Bell: Tiger Woods’ BFF, Part-Time Pimp

In two interviews Sunday, Tiger Woods says no one close to him was aware of his many, many affairs. Well, except for the guy who used to set ’em up, logistically. “No one knew what was going or when it was going on,” he said. Well, someone was obviously coordinating details with the Tiger Woods mistresses on his behalf. He’s Tiger f*%king Woods. Mofo delegates . One can understand why he’d want to cover his buddy’s a$$, but come ON. We know he worked Tiger’s bone Rolodex. Newly released texts and emails by Tiger’s porn star mistress Joslyn James show just that – Tiger’s best pal Bryon Bell knew what was going on, and knew when. Bell planned it, after all, emailing her travel details and working out transportation for her, giving her his phone number and even offering her a lift personally. Bryon Bell: Tiger Woods’ friend and Joslyn James sex coordinator. “I’ll work out transportation. I will be in town so I may pick you up. Otherwise, I will have a car set up for you,” he wrote Veronica Daniels (James’ real name), from his work account at Tiger Woods Design, which he’s president of. Not as scandalous as the Tiger Woods text messages Joslyn James leaked last week, but another interesting step in her delayed mission to sabotage the golfer. Not that anyone should be surprised. When Rachel Uchitel flew to Australia to meet Tiger – the affair that first exposed his cheating double life – it was Byron who made arrangements, which the National Enquirer ultimately got wind of it. No word if he also did this for Tiger and Devon James . Either way, the rest, as they say is sordid, hilarious history that keeps on unraveling. Follow the jump for one of Bryon Bell’s emails with Joslyn James … Subject : Travel Info Date : Sun, 29 Apr 2007 16:38:46 -0400 From : bryon@tigerwoodsdesign.com To : joslynjames@hotmail.com Veronica, Here are your travel details for next week. Meet the Generation That Will Save and/or Destroy the New York Times [Dynasties]

The only way the New York Times can escape the clutches of a Mexican billionaire is by successfully instituting a paywall. Who has it chosen to manage this treacherous path? The publisher’s nephew. He used to run a DJ school. The Times is a publicly traded company, but the heirs of its modern founder Adolph Ochs and his son-in-law, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, own the voting shares. And in an effort to inculcate all the far-flung cousins—there are 27 fifth-generation descendants of Sulzberger—with a sense of responsibility for the newspaper and its various holdings, the New York Times Company likes to rotate them through the place from time to time. The company’s latest proxy statement , released earlier this week, brought news of yet two more Sulzberger cousins signing up for duty at the mother ship—in this job market, no less! And one of them was particularly momentous: Thirty-three-year-old David Perpich , nephew to Times publisher Arthur “Pinch” Sulzberger Jr., who is himself son to his predecessor Arthur “Punch” Sulzberger, who was himself son to his predecessor Arthur Hays Sulzberger, has been hired as the executive director of paid products at NYTimes.com just as the site prepares to wring desperately needed money out of its 17 million monthly users by limiting the number of stories they can read without subscribing . So here’s a handy guide to what Perpich—as well as his various kinsman and -women spread throughout the New York Times Company—brings to the table. David Perpich, 33, fifth generation Perpich’s claim to fame is his role in helping run the Scratch DJ Academy, a rigorous institution of higher learning co-founded by Jam Master Jay that offers an ” incredible opportunity for amateur and aspiring music enthusiasts to learn how to DJ, from mixing and blending, to scratching and beat juggling .” Among Perpich’s duties at the Academy was “handling all marketing initiatives,” and he was really good at it: He managed to get the school mentioned a whopping nine times in the paper his family owns ! After leaving academia around 2007, according to this excellent 2008 New York rundown of the Sulzberger clan , Perpich briefly entertained an offer to join the family business, but he turned it down in favor of a technology consulting gig at Booz Allen. For whatever reason, that didn’t work out, so he figured he’d head over to his uncle’s shop and shepherd the most crucial business initiative that the Times has ever undertaken. He’s up for it, though: He’s a digital wizard who’s thoroughly mastered Twitter , having limited his posts to one heartbreaking online memorial for Michael Jackson made all the more moving by its singularity: Samuel Dolnick , 30, fifth generation Also reported in the most recent proxy statement was the hiring of Samuel Dolnick, the grandson of Arthur Sulzberger’s sister Ruth Holmberg (who herself served as the publisher of the Chattanooga Times ). Dolnick, who previously toiled as a reporter for the Associated Press, was hired at the Newspaper Guild Minimum staff reporter’s salary of $90,500 in September, and has been writing for the Metro desk. According to the New York Observer , Dolnick is no dilettante: His AP gig took him to New Delhi, and before that, he interned at the Village Voice under the estimable Wayne Barrett. He’s settled down in New York for the new gig, having just purchased a home in Brooklyn with a $300,000 mortgage at the discount-window interest rate of .57% from his grandmother, according to New York real estate records. A. G. Sulzberger, 30, fifth generation Arthur G. Sulzberger, Pinch’s son, joined the paper last March, also at the Guild minimum salary, and since then he’s been cold huntin’ snipers , writing about bus stops and light bulbs for the Metro desk, and fending off obscene propositions from Gawker readers . Before that he wrote for the Portland Oregonian . Rachel B. Golden, 31, fifth generation Rachel is the daughter of Michael Golden , Holmberg’s son and vice chairman of the Times Company. She makes a cool $82,136 as a marketing associate for the Times web site, where she’s responsible for promoting the Style, T, and Travel sections . James Dryfoos , 45, fifth generation Dryfoos, the grandson of Arthur Sulzberger’s sister Marian, is a systems analyst for the Times Company, where he analyzes systems for $144,673 a year. He married a lady named Reagan Rexrode and is a homebrew enthusiast . Michael Greenspon , 40, fifth generation Also a grandson of Marian’s, Greenspon is, according to New York , “quietly competent but not an obvious candidate to lead the paper.” He’s a project manager in strategic planning and served last year as the interem general manager of the New York Times News Service, which laid of some 25 to 30 people in November . He makes $176,961 a year. Michael Golden, 61, fourth generation Golden, father to Rachel and son of Ruth, is Arthur Sulzberger Jr.’s chief rival in the family. He’s currently vice chairman after a stint in Paris as the publisher of the International Herald Tribune , which the Times Company wrestled away from the Washington Post Company in 2002. Golden shepherded the company’s move from its old Times Square headquarters to a bright shiny new $500 million building, which worked out like this: The old building was flipped at a $350 million profit three years after the Times sold it, and the Times started selling off pieces of the new building for cash two years after it was built . For this he made $1.8 million last year. Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., 59 Arthur is the publisher of the New York Times . He makes $5.1 million, and is primarily occupied with insuring that none of the aforementioned fifth-generation Sulzbergers have jobs in five years. SPECIAL BONUS HIDDEN SULZBERGER: New York ‘s look at the Sulzberger clan noted that a “spokesperson for the Times said there are two additional fifth-generation descendents, but they have never appeared as beneficiaries in the company’s SEC filings.” We’ve found one of them: In addition to providing a mortgage to Dolnick, Holmberg is also listed in New York real estate records as having made a $265,000 loan to a Sharon Skettini of Brooklyn. And according to public databases, Skettini once shared an address in Arizona with Ruth’s son Stephen Golden, a lawyer in Tucson. Skettini appears to have once been employed as a literary agent for Sterling Lord Literistic , a New York agency, but she’s not currently listed on the firm’s site. She doesn’t appear to have any public relationship with the Times .

Sh*t show: India’s toilet museum

Today was one of the strangest shoot days I’ve had in quite some time: I toured the museum of toilets in Delhi. Yes, a place dedicated to the history and the evolution of toilets. Here’s a small sampling of some of the more interesting models: This is the throne-toilet. For the king who doesn’t want to leave the chamber to take a dump. This is the travel toilet. For the outdoorsy type who wants to enjoy a nice spread on a table, or a desk to write on, but who doesn’t like to squat. This model is a multi-purpose solution for those willing to lug it around. Have a hearty lunch, then flip open the tabletop to let it back out. And finally, the comfort toilet. For those who like the comfort of fine leather, and the convenience of a built-in crapper. The toilet docent added that this is favored by the “fat and lazy,” who might not want to get up from the couch while watching TV or playing a game of cards.
