Travis Barker And DJ A-Trak Call Their Shows ‘A Spectacle’

‘Every moment is like a slap in the face,’ Trak says of their onstage collabos. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak Photo: MTV News Fans who packed Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre on Wednesday night to catch Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak’s second-ever performance no doubt left the place feeling like the dynamic duo had rehearsed their airtight set to within an inch of its life. But, in actuality, nothing could be further from the truth. “We pretty much came up with everything in the past couple of days,” A-Trak told MTV News. “Like, we came in with nothing.” This is nothing new for Barker and Trak, who decided to perform together after a lengthy jam session last fall. So it was somewhat fitting that their “rehearsals” for the Roxy gigs flowed in much the same way. “[It was like] the earlier times when we had gotten together. It was jamming. It was just … seeing, like, what song he would throw at me and what I would do. Just seeing what the chemistry was like,” Barker explained. “And now it was like, you know, piecing it together. And we found that we used a bunch of my remixes and his remixes, [plus] some of his original songs, so it’s really cool.” And while the duo were cuttingly precise Wednesday night, there was also a liberating looseness to their set. And that’s what really got the crowd — which included Kanye West and girlfriend Amber Rose, Tim Armstrong and Rob Anton from the Transplants, Samantha Ronson and onstage guests Kid Cudi and Lil Jon — moving. Because despite the fact they were watching just a drummer and a DJ, the Roxy gig seemed more like a genuine, honest-to-goodness show, be it rock, hip hop or something in between. “I think the show is really, like, a concert performance. It’s a spectacle,” A-Trak said. “It’s, like, really condensed and in your face, and I think that every minute, every moment is like a slap in the face. That’s how I described it.” “There’s something for all music fans. If you’re a fan of music, you’ll dig it,” Barker added. “And then if you’re a fan of A-Trak and all his music or you’re a fan of me and you wanna see us just mash, then I think you’ll be stoked to see it.” Related Artists Travis Barker DJ A-Trak

Travis Barker, A-Trak Rock Hollywood Gig With Kid Cudi, Lil Jon

Duo played second-ever live show Wednesday night. By Kelly Marino Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak perform in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: MTV News/ Kelly Marino LOS ANGELES — On Wednesday night, Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak played their second-ever public show together — and although the set was quick, it did not disappoint, featuring guest spots from Lil Jon , Kid Cudi and Kid Sister . Travis Barker, DJ A-Trak Play Hollywood Performing in front of a sold-out crowd at Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre, the duo hit the ground running the minute they took to the stage. With a set that lasted a little under an hour, the duo treated fans to a medley of songs that included remixes by A-Trak (who also serves as Kanye West’s concert DJ), Barker’s own remixes and new material. Though there wasn’t any interaction with the fans, the crowd didn’t seem to mind. Instead they stood and watched in awe as Barker and A-Trak opened the show with Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and continued to please the crowd with remixes of Nas’ “Made You Look,” Kanye’s “Stronger” and Snoop Dogg’s “I Wanna Rock.” And just as the energy was peaking, fans were treated to a guest appearance by Lil Jon, who took to the stage with his signature sunglasses halfway into the set, performing his song “Outta Your Mind.” But as just as quickly as he appeared on the stage he was gone, teasing fans and leaving them wanting more. As the night went on Travis Barker and A-Trak continued to perform an array of tunes, adding a little more of a rock feel to the show with Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade,” Beastie Boys “Sabotage” and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll.” Each song lasted for only a few short minutes before spilling into the next. The set then transitioned into more dance-oriented material, with songs like Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up,” and Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock.” Not surprisingly, the set ended with a bang: opening act Kid Sister returned to the stage, with Barker playing drums and A Trak spinning behind her. Wearing ’80s-inspired attire, she pumped up the crowd with some booty-shaking moves while performing her hit “Pro Nails.” But when Kid Cudi took the stage, the crowd exploded. Performing “Pursuit of Happiness,” fans sang along at the top of their lungs while Cudi jumped around the entire stage, hi-five-ing fans lucky enough to be standing in front. The show ended just shy of midnight with DJ A Trak waving to the crowd thanking them and Travis Barker handing his drums sticks off to a screaming fan before walking off stage. As fans scattered to the exit doors, VIPs headed backstage — including Amber Rose sans Kanye West. Corey Haim’s Death Underlines Dangers Of Prescription Drugs, Dr. Drew Says

‘My patients are dying every day from medication prescribed by my peers,’ Pinsky tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Drew Pinsky Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Though a drug overdose is suspected, Los Angeles police have not yet determined what substance killed actor Corey Haim , 38. But for addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky, Wednesday’s (March 10) headlines offered a sadly similar refrain. “I never met Corey, but people brought his name up to me hundreds of times, and as I’m sure I’ve told you, this is just the beginning of a tidal wave of more of this,” he said. “My patients are dying every day from medication prescribed by my peers. And it’s not just young Hollywood but all kinds of people, and you don’t need illicit drugs anymore because pharmaceuticals are just as powerful.” Corey Haim: A Life In Photos Haim struggled with addiction to crack, alcohol and prescription medication for years. TMZ has reported that a number of prescription-medication bottles were found near the actor’s body and that his mother confirmed that he’d long struggled with a pill addiction. Pinsky, host of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab,” never treated Haim but said he was the kind of star who might have benefited from being on the show. “I can’t confirm it, but I just heard that our producers had reached out to him, and he reacted enraged and insulted, like, ‘How dare you!’ ” Pinsky said. “Which is a shame, because he would have really been helped. All I know is that our outcomes are pretty good, and there’s something about the cameras and doing it publicly that holds people accountable and makes them want to be an inspiration to other people.” Following on the heels of the deaths of Heath Ledger and recovering addict DJ AM , who died from a combination of legal and illicit drugs, as well as Brittany Murphy , who died from a combination of pneumonia and an over-the-counter-drug overdose, Pinsky said Haim’s death is a sad continuation of a trend he’s seen developing for more than five years. “It’s so easy to get these medications, and sometimes well-meaning physicians who don’t understand addiction prescribe them for legitimate reasons, like in DJ AM’s case,” said Pinsky, referring to the anti-anxiety meds AM took following the fiery plane crash in 2008 that he and Travis Barker survived. “But they start taking them and don’t realize the trouble they’re getting into.” Sometimes, it’s merely a form of denial on the part of the addict, Pinsky said, a feeling of “the doctor is prescribing them and I feel better, so it must be OK.” But, especially with former addicts, that feeling subsides and it leads to the same escalating addiction behavior. “Addiction is a deadly disease, and the prognosis is worse than most cancers,” said Pinsky, who predicted that some of the high-profile patients he’s treated on his show may end up dying because of the disease. The singer, who was in the country performing at a singing competition, announced the news on his Twitter page. “Whooohoo!! … just got my ticket home errrrbodyy!!!!! … never thought I’d b so happy in an airport b4!!!,” he tweeted late Thursday, posting a photo of the airline ticket counter rep celebrating the joyous occasion. Yamin originally hoped to leave the country on Tuesday, but due to the widespread damage from the powerful quake, he was unable to make it to a major airport and was forced to stay in the country until he got clearance to leave from the U.S. embassy. The quake hit just hours after season five’s third-place finisher performed at the competition in the city of Vi

Travis Barker Gets Tattoo In Memory Of DJ AM

Hip-to-knee piece incorporates late DJ’s signature lightning bolt. By Gil Kaufman Travis Barker’s thigh tattoo Photo: twitter.com/trvsbrkr Travis Barker has paid the ultimate tribute to his late friend and musical partner DJ AM : getting a memorial tattoo honoring the celebrity DJ. Barker posted a photo of the thigh tattoo to his Twitter account on Thursday . The nearly hip-to-knee piece reads “In Memory Of” in cursive, with AM’s signature lightning bolt logo floating in a bank of clouds that have sunbeams streaming out of them. The image also incorporates a weeping angel whose head is ringed by a beaming halo. The tat was finished on Thursday night by body artist to the stars Mister Cartoon. He’s no stranger to inking Barker, having given the Blink-182 drummer a wrist tattoo of his daughter’s name last year. Barker and AM survived a 2008 plane crash in South Carolina that took the lives of four people. AM (born Adam Goldstein) died last August of an accidental drug overdose after struggling with a relapse in the aftermath of the crash. The drummer will take the stage with DJ A-Trak in Hollywood for performances next Tuesday and Wednesday. The shows will be Barker’s first live performances with a DJ since AM’s death. “When Travis hollered, I was definitely flattered,” said A-Trak. “We started by jamming once, back in the fall, just came over to the studio, and we did, like, one hour of jamming, which we thought was maybe a half an hour. “I just started playing records and scratching, and he was playing on top, and it went really, really naturally,” A-Trak continued. “It was very fluid. And we stopped and looked at the watch, and it was like, ‘Oh, we’ve been playing for an hour and didn’t even realize it.’ And I think that solidified for both of us in our minds that we could do this pretty easily.” Barker and A-Trak will perform each other’s remixes as well as some new collaborations. Travis Barker Defends Himself After Paparazzi Scuffle

‘I’m not a socialite out begging for that kind of attention,’ Blink-182 drummer tweets. By Gil Kaufman Travis Barker Photo: Jordan Strauss/ WireImage Travis Barker took to his Twitter account to defend himself on Sunday after a run-in with the paparazzi that ended with a scuffle and accusations of slashed tires. “Bottom line, take photos at red carpets,” Barker tweeted. “Take pics of hungry Hollywood starlets and douche bags that are out at clubs and bars that like it … Bottom line: I don’t. I’m not a socialite out begging for that kind of attention. I’m a family man out wit my kids. Don’t get the 2 twisted.” According to footage reportedly obtained by TMZ , Barker and his friends spat at the two photographers and videographers following them outside a Calabasas, California, restaurant on Sunday, then allegedly struck one’s camera and slashed another’s tires. Police were reportedly called out to investigate the incident and no arrests were made, though a vandalism report was taken. The video posted on the site opens with Barker yelling, “Where’s your homeboy?,” seemingly at one of the snappers. Barker reportedly got into it with a videographer on the way into the restaurant and, on his way out, another one accused a member of the entourage of taking his phone. A person in Barker’s entourage can be heard denying the lifting of the phone and the cops arrive on the scene shortly after. Barker is depicted in the video carrying his daughter as the photographers and videographers sit in their cars, taking pictures of him. Once they notice the tabloid shooters, Barker’s group approaches the car and unnamed associates confront the paps, who get out of the car and get into a verbal altercation. At one point, someone appears to nearly slap the video camera out of a paparazzo’s hand and a chase ensues as Barker’s friends complain about the tabloid shooters harassing the Blink drummer’s children. Shortly after another paparazzo accuses the Barker group of stealing his phone, police arrive on the scene and try to separate the two sides. One of the shooters tells the police they don’t wish to press charges, then complains that the tires of one of their cars were allegedly slashed. TMZ also obtained what it claimed was footage of the initial shooter seemingly antagonizing Barker when he arrived for breakfast at the restaurant. In the clip, the videographer rushes up on Barker as the drummer is walking quickly into a restaurant carrying his daughter. The shooter baits Barker, saying, “Why you speeding, whatcha gonna do?” to which a clearly annoyed Barker responds, “Get your camera [away] … I’ll kick the sh– out of you, bro. If I didn’t have my little girl in my hands? Gimme and hour and I’ll meet you.” Barker tweeted about the bum rush a short while later. “When I’m out at breakfast at 8 a.m. in the morning the last thing I appreciate is some photographer threatening me 2 fight while he’s 3 deep,” he wrote. “When I defend myself/my kids that don’t make me a tough guy. I was outnumbered and threatened so I did what any man would … paparazzi cried like young girls when it was no longer 3 of them against me and my kids. Didn’t they remember threatening me an hr. ago?? A spokesperson for Barker could not be reached for comment at press time, and it is unclear from the video what agencies the paparazzos work for. TMZ claimed that neither of the men Barker later confronted were in the first video. Related Artists blink-182
