George Zimmerman Apologizes to Trayvon Martin’s Family; Bail Set at $150,000

A judge granted bail for George Zimmerman at a hearing in Florida today, during which the defendant apologized to the family of Trayvon Martin. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set bail at $150,000, but would not allow his release immediately, citing further discussions needed about the terms. Lester said that Zimmerman must not contact the victim’s family; must wear an ankle monitoring bracelet; and adhere to a 7 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew. George Zimmerman Apology: I Am Sorry The hearing took place just a few hours after the release of a bloody photo of George Zimmerman’s head taken the night of the now-infamous altercation. Some say the photo could bolster his claim that Martin was the aggressor that night, and that he shot the teenager as an act of self-defense . In any case, the presumption of innocence was enough to earn Zimmerman bail. The judge’s order also states that Zimmerman cannot be in possession of any firearms and must not consume alcohol or controlled substances. Taking the stand briefly at the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, Zimmerman addressed the parents of Martin, who were seated in court. “I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your son,” he said. “I did not know how old he was,” he continued. “I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. And I did not know whether he was armed or not.” Zimmerman said he had made a similar statement to police. “I was told not to communicate with [Martin’s parents],” said the 28-year-old, who was charged with second-degree murder in the February 26 shooting. “I did ask [my attorneys] to express that to them.” Zimmerman has been behind bars since his arrest nine days ago. His attorney, Mark O’Mara, asked the judge to let him out of jail while he awaits trial. O’Mara also asked the judge to allow Zimmerman to leave the state while wearing a GPS bracelet, and to keep his location confidential to secure his safety. The judge said he will consider those requests before granting the release of Zimmerman, who will almost certainly plead not guilty in the case. Martin’s parents were in the courtroom, coming face-to-face with their 17-year-old’s killer for the first time. They wept at news of the bond. After the hearing, Martin family attorney Ben Crump said Martin’s parents were “very outraged” at the results of the hearing. He said: “It was devastating that [Zimmerman] got to give a self-serving apology to help get him a bond. Why is everybody protecting George Zimmerman?”

George Zimmerman Photo Shows Bloody Head, May Bolster Self-Defense Claim

A new photograph showing the bloodied back of George Zimmerman’s head has surfaced, shedding new light on the controversial Trayvon Martin case. Taken three minutes after he shot and killed Martin, the image gives possible credence to his claim that he fought for his life and acted in self-defense. The revelation comes as his lawyer and prosecutors prepare for Zimmerman’s first bail hearing today, which could result in his being released from jail. George Zimmerman, Bloody Head Zimmerman, 28, is being held on charges of second-degree murder for the February 26 shooting of Martin, 17 which could carry a life sentence if convicted. The graphic image, first obtained by ABC news, shows blood trickling down the back of George Zimmerman’s head from two cuts after the altercation. It also shows a possible contusion forming on the crown of his head. Though the police video , taken hours after the shooting, did not show any obvious injuries, the original police report that night notes that the back of Zimmerman’s head was wet, and that he was bleeding from the nose and head. Zimmerman told police that night that he shot and killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense after Martin punched him, pounced on him and threatened him . Zimmerman says Martin was the aggressor and that he bashed his head into the concrete sidewalk inside the Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was treated at the scene by paramedics, then cuffed and driven to the Sanford police station. He was questioned for hours and released. He was not admitted to a hospital or given stitches the night of the incident. The photographer did not see the scuffle that night, but did hear it. The source saw Martin’s body on the wet grass and claims the gunpowder burns on Martin’s gray hoodie were clearly visible, indicating he was shot at very close range. The photographer says Zimmerman asked to call his wife. When the photographer asked what to say, Zimmerman blurted out “man, just tell her I shot someone.” ABC News reports that investigators have seen the photo. “How bad could it have been if they didn’t take him to the hospital [and] didn’t stitch him up,” Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said in a statement. He goes on to note that, “The special prosecutor has seen all the evidence and still believes George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin.” Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara says his client will be vindicated: “He needs to get out. He should not be in jail. I want him out because I need him out. He wants to get out. His family wants it out. It should happen.” In a bail hearing in Florida, the burden of proof to deny bail, even in a second degree murder trial, is higher than necessary to seek a conviction in a trial. If Zimmerman is released, his attorney tells ABC News that he has a number of potential safe houses prepared to shelter him. Stay tuned.

Trayvon Martin’s Big Brother Doesn’t Believe Zimmerman’s Shady Story: “He Wasn’t Violent. He’s Smarter Than That”

Trayvon Martin’s Brother Jahvaris Fulton Speaks On His Behalf With all of George Zimmerman’s well connected defenders clamoring to his defense, it’s good to hear Trayvon Martin’s big brother Jahvaris speaking up on his behalf! A lot of conflicting statements have been made about the night Trayvon Martin was shot to death by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Martin’s big brother doesn’t want any of them to cloud the memory of the bright, positive teen he’d been close to. In an interview with CNN’s “A360,” 21-year-old Jahvaris Fulton said Zimmerman’s description of the fatal night –and his claim that he acted in self defense– doesn’t match the Trayvon he knew. “Based on what I heard, with the 911 tapes and all the evidence, he tried to get away from the situation,” ” the soft-spoken college student told the network on Friday. “He wasn’t violent. So for him to actually jump on someone he doesn’t even know, to me that’s not him. He’s smarter than that.” Fulton’s comments echo what he told local media in late March, shortly after the shooter’s father and brother took to national television to bolster Zimmerman’s self defense claims. “I was listening to Zimmerman’s father speak yesterday, and he said something like, my brother was on top of his son and said ‘You’re going to die tonight,’” Fulton told Miami’s CBS 4. “That doesn’t sound like my brother at all.” In his interview with CNN, Fulton said that Martin was an honor student who couldn’t wait to go to college after visiting his brother at Florida International University during spring break. “I would like to remember him as… someone who’s positive, happy, bright future ahead of him,” Fulton said.”He was probably going to be somebody.” We’re glad Jahvaris is helping to keep his brother’s memory alive. SMH: Police are investigating the “racially motivated” beating of a 27-year-old man who was walking home from midtown bars early Saturday when he said he was jumped by five to eight men who shouted “Trayvon” before the attack. The exclamation was an apparent reference to Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old from Miami who was shot and killed in February walking back to his father’s girlfriend’s house in Sanford. His shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged. The case of Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was killed by Zimmerman, a Hispanic crime-watch volunteer, has stirred conversations across the country about race, crime and profiling. Investigators believe that case was the catalyst for the beating Saturday in Gainesville. “We do believe that the crime was racially motivated,” Gainesville Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said. The assailants were black, while the victim is white, Valuri said. She said the victim had been drinking and could not provide a description of the attackers or their vehicle, only that it was a mid-size vehicle. But Valuri said his injuries were consistent with being jumped by a group. During what he told police was a five-minute beating, he sustained injuries to the left eye, abrasions to his palms and a cut on his right kneecap, and Valuri said he would likely have “permanent disfigurement to the left side of his face.” He was taken to Shands at the University of Florida for treatment. The attack occurred at about 2:45 a.m. in the 3200 block of Southwest 23rd Terrace. The victim told police that a vehicle was coming east on Southwest 32nd Place when it stopped at 23rd Terrace. A group of men got out and told him he was walking too slowly, the victim told police. They then yelled “Trayvon,” according to a GPD report, and proceeded to beat him. Turn the page for the video.

George Zimmerman Appears in Court; Affidavit Outlines Probable Cause For Murder Charge

George Zimmerman made his first court appearance since being officially charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman wore a gray prison jumpsuit and spoke only to answer “Yes, sir,” after being asked questions about the charge against him and his lawyer. His hair was shaved down to stubble and he sported a thin goatee, which appeared consistent with his booking photo from the day before (below). He resurfaced Wednesday to turn himself in after weeks in hiding. Meanwhile, a new document provided additional details on the prosecution’s case. Judge Mark E. Herr said he found probable cause to move forward with the case and an arraignment would be held on May 29 before another judge. The affidavit of probable cause prepared by prosecutors shed some light on why they chose to charge Zimmerman in the February 26 shooting. The Orlando Sentinel says that on that night, Trayvon Martin’s mother identified screams heard in the background of a 911 call as her son’s. There were doubts as to whether Martin or Zimmerman called for help. Prosecutors interviewed a friend of Martin’s who was talking to him just before the shooting. Martin told the witness he was being followed and was scared. Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman. The affidavit says, “Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin.” The affidavit says that “Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher” during his initial 911 call , who told him to stop, and “continued to follow Martin.” The 17-year-old “was trying to return to his home.” George Zimmerman: First Court Appearance At a press conference following the court appearance, Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara said he will seek a bond hearing “in the next few weeks.” Zimmerman is widely expected to enter a not guilty plea. O’Mara said he is working on finding a place he could safely stay if he is released before trial. Speaking to reporters after the hearing, O’Mara said he was concerned that the case up until now has been handled largely in the public eye. “It’s really supposed to happen in the courtroom,” O’Mara said, deflecting questions about evidence in the case and his client’s mental state. “He’s tired,” O’Mara said when asked about Zimmerman, who has said he acted in self-defense and that Martin was the aggressor that night. “He’s gone through some tribulations of his own, being the focus of the intensity of this event. He’s facing second degree murder charges now.” “He’s frightened. That would frighten any one of us.”
