Browsing through the photo record of Tuesday’s Titanic 3D premiere in London, one notices immediately the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio. What gives? I mean, if Billy Zane can make time, then lord knows Leo should be able to drop in for at least a few snapshots with James Cameron and co-star Kate Winslet. At the very least, he’d better have a good excuse — which, according to Cameron, he did. Speaking to reporters on the red carpet, the filmmaker/ deep-sea habitué explained that DiCaprio was busy shooting Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained , and thus unavailable to travel. But that wasn’t all: “I didn’t show him the whole film but I showed him 18 minutes of it a few months ago,” Cameron continued, “It was a good reunion for us but great to watch his reaction. He couldn’t believe it. He said to me, ‘I’m such a young punk. Look at me.’ He was practically crawling under the seat. It was a good moment.” I can only presume this was the same clip package Cameron showed Movieline , which wasn’t that bad. Winslet, meanwhile, said she would seek similar refuge — from her nude scenes in particular: “I’m not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point or on the floor. I haven’t seen the whole film in a very long time, I’ve seen little pieces of it, but it’s a whole different me and we look much younger and our acting was different, hopefully not as good as now.” Never let go, babe. Now someone tell us where Kathy Bates was. [ OK! via Yahoo! , Metro ; photo via Daily Mail ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
High five to Fox for pulling their bullet-ridden Neighborhood Watch marketing materials from Florida theaters this week following the February killing of Trayvon Martin. Trying to get as much distance as possible from the teaser’s emphasis on grown men Ben Stiller , Vince Vaughn , Jonah Hill , and Richard Ayoade stalking and finger-shooting suburban kids is a good idea and a sensitive move — not to mention a no-brainer necessity, PR-wise — so the studio’s forthcoming campaign will likely focus on the film’s “broad alien-invasion comedy” elements. But even four months from now, will it be too soon for Neighborhood Watch to make fun escapism out of vigilante violence? A Fox representative explained the studio’s decision to THR : “We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida,” a Fox spokesperson tells THR. “The movie, which is not scheduled for release for several months, was made and these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. The teaser materials were part of an early phase of our marketing and were never planned for long-term use. Above all else, our thoughts go out to the families touched by this terrible event.” Extending that retraction on a wider scale might even be in order, seeing as the media firestorm over Martin and his shooter, George Zimmerman, is now a national conversation and not just one for Floridians. Which brings us to the big question: Is the Trayvon Martin case too big, too incendiary, or just too heartbreaking for Neighborhood Watch to come out as planned, and perform well, in four months’ time? What’s in the teaser trailer may be an indication of the problem here: Whether or not it’s revealed in marketing materials, the film seems to glorify the kind of volunteer policing that Martin shooter Zimmerman was a part of in real life. The sounds of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” underscore the comically grandiose slow-motion crawl of the Neighborhood Watch gang — they’re lazy suburbanites using a self-important Neighborhood Watch front to get away from their families, but once the aliens invade they’ll become true-blue heroes. (Since I haven’t seen the film, I’m only guessing here — maybe it’ll turn out that the aliens were only visiting peaceably, their presence horribly misunderstood by overzealous would-be heroes, who resolve their differences with nonviolence.) That setup would be fairly harmless if it didn’t tap directly into the debate over what really happened on February 26 in Sanford, FL. Zimmerman was an active Neighborhood Watch captain in his gated community who, by many accounts, took citizen policing very seriously; following Martin as a suspicious person on the day of the incident led to the unarmed 17-year-old’s fatal shooting, which Zimmerman claimed was an act of self-defense. Neighborhood Watch , penned by Seth Rogen , Evan Goldberg, and Jared Stern as a ” hard R ” and directed by Lonely Island ‘s Akiva Schaffer, is still on Fox’s schedule for a July 27 wide release. According to the THR report, the studio doesn’t plan on pushing back the debut, despite the ongoing furor over the Martin case. I’d like to think that Martin’s death will be resolved but not forgotten by then, if only to give his family and all who’ve become invested in the case some closure, but I’m skeptical that four months — or five, or a year, or any measure of time — will be long enough that I won’t be thinking of George Zimmerman while watching Ben Stiller blow away the aliens who darken his doorstep. Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana Split Could it be because of her jealous ways??? Three months after Cooper, 37, and his Words costar Zoe Saldana, 33, first hooked up, the couple have called it quits, a source confirms to the new issue of Us Weekly. “They’re definitely not together,” the insider says of the pair, who met while filming the upcoming thriller and were first spotted kissing at a New Year’s Eve bash. Though Saldana — who split from fiance and love of 10 years Keith Britton in November — was spotted hanging with Cooper’s mom, Gloria, in February, pals say she isn’t too bummed about her breakup. “She and Bradley weren’t superserious at all,” says a pal of Saldana and Cooper, whose A-list exes include Renee Zellweger, Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Lopez and Beginners actress Melanie Laurent. After director Spike Lee erroneously re-Tweeted their address as belonging to Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman , a school-cafeteria lunch lady and her husband were essentially forced to flee their home amid unwanted attention. Death threats, hate mail, swarming reporters and fearful inquiries from neighbors were all too much for the woman, 70, who has a heart condition, and her husband, 72, who temporarily moved to a hotel to avoid the spotlight and possible danger. According to reports, the confusion arose because the woman has a son, William George Zimmerman, who lived with her in 1995 and still lives in Central Florida. He is no relation to George Zimmerman, 28, the un-charged shooter in the Trayvon Martin case , which is sparking national outrage and international interest. Zimmerman traced the tweet – which did not initially come from Spike Lee, but gained massive interest after Lee re-Tweeted it – to a man in California. Zimmerman said he has implored the man to stop and said he received this response, “Black power all day. No justice, no peace” and an obscenity. Lee’s tweet has been removed, but it continues to be re-tweeted. Man. Spike hasn’t flown off the handle and wished he could take it back this badly since his taunting of Reggie Miller sparked the Pacers guard’s 25-point fourth quarter explosion in Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals.
‘We as a people have always been targeted,’ Compton MC tells MTV News of teen’s racially charged shooting death. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia Morris The Game Photo: MTV News The tragic killing of Trayvon Martin has had Americans across the country rallying for justice. But rapper Game believes, as others do, that the 17-year-old’s death is part of a deeply rooted racial issue. “I think that from the beginning of mankind, we as a people have always been targeted,” the Compton MC told MTV News on March 22. On February 26, Martin was shot dead by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman as he walked back to the home of a family friend in a gated Sanford, Florida, community. Zimmerman told police that he believed Martin — who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt — looked suspicious. After a call to 911, the dispatcher advised him not to pursue Martin. But Zimmerman reportedly ignored those instructions and pursued Martin anyway. When police arrived on the scene, the teen was dead. Although Zimmerman admitted to the shooting, police declined to arrest him citing the state’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person to kill in cases of self-defense. Trayvon’s parents, community leaders and protestors were outraged and have been crying for justice ever since. “For some, reason people don’t think that they need any excuse to kill us, beat us, hit us, run us over, disrespect us or anything like that,” Game said of the country’s history of racial tension and violence. “I’m far from racist,” he continued. “I’m very educated and intellectual and I understand how life works and how people of all colors exist under the sun, but it just seems like more than not black people are, I don’t know, there’s always some negative occurrence that goes on in our existence. This is just another reminder that stupidity still exists.” On Monday, the Orlando Sentinel reported that unidentified investigators in the case told them that Zimmerman had a different take on the events of February 26. The 28-year-old told law enforcement that Martin struck him and bashed his head on the ground before he shot the teenager in the chest, killing him. More details emerge about ol Georgy Porgy and his “interesting” family past… Did George Zimmerman’s Retired Judge Father Help Keep Him Out Of Jail? Robert Zimmerman, a former Orange County magistrate judge, recently wrote a letter to The Orlando Sentinel defending his son, who’s been dragged through the mud for shooting the unarmed 17-year-old last month. In the letter, the senior Zimmerman asks people not to jump to conclusions and insists that his son didn’t follow the young boy home as he walked through their gated community. “He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever. The media portrayal of George as a racist could not be further from the truth. At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin. When the true details of the event became public, and I hope that will be soon, everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media,” wrote Robert Zimmerman. Now more info is being dug up on his “victimized” son through public records and revealing his checkered past. According to a records search on George, he was previously arrested for domestic violence, resisting an officer without violence and most shockingly, resisting an officer with violence — a felony charge that surely could have landed him in prison. All three of those arrests, however, were mysteriously closed with no semblance of charges for the Florida resident. So how was someone with a violent past including that of battery against an officer able to carry a 9 mm handgun? Maybe that’s a question Robert Zimmerman should answer. This is a lil’ TOO convenient if you ask us! All these people going on TV vouching for this guy must have never heard about their “friend” and his violent past. Geraldo Riveria Apologizes For Trayvon Martin Hoodie Comments Do you forgive this guy??? Fox News host Geraldo Rivera on Tuesday apologized for saying that the fact that Trayvon Martin was wearing a hoodie had as much to do with his death as George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who shot the teen. “Heard petition demands my apology to Trayvon’s parents,” he said on his Facebook page. “Save effort: I deeply apologize for any hurt I caused — that is not my goal or intent.” Rivera elaborated on his thoughts in an email to Politico.com, offering an apology while also noting that earlier an unnamed “prominent black conservative” had commented on “my ‘very practical and potentially life-saving campaign urging black and Hispanic parents not to let their children go around wearing hoodies.’” Last week on Fox & Friends Rivera stated that “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.” Rivera later acknowledged that his own son Gabriel was “ashamed” of him for stating that. Rivera insisted he was only trying to protect children. “I remain absolutely convinced of what I said about asking for trouble,” he stated. “There’s trouble enough for minority boys and young men not to provoke mad responses from paranoid jerk offs.” Source More On Bossip!
