A Tribe Called Quest Say Nas ‘Initiated’ Documentary

But soon, the crew recalls to MTV News, Michael Rapaport took the reins. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News A Tribe Called Quest were approached with the idea of doing a documentary, and they couldn’t have been happier with the producer. Fellow Queens native Nas first introduced the idea of capturing the story of one of hip-hop’s greatest groups of all time. But by the time filming began, Nas receded into the background as actor Michael Rapaport took control of the project. ” ‘I want to shoot a documentary on you,’ ” Q-Tip told MTV News, recalling a conversation with Rapaport. “I had already breached Nas with the guys, and everyone was loving that idea. So I was thinking in my head … It’d be great to have someone we respect tell our story, who’s a part of it as well, and then Mike’s enthusiasm. I spoke to everyone about it. It was some hesitation [about Rapaport’s involvement]. … I think it was because Nas had initiated it.” Jarobi, who joined Sway by phone, added: “The Nas involvement kind of sweetened the deal for everybody.” According to Tribe DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his reservations came from Rapaport not being part of the hip-hop community. “My hesitation was purely from a position that we’re bringing someone from the outside to be a part of the inside life,” he said. “We have to make sure that people understand who this family is and capture it and deliver it the same way we live our lives. It didn’t matter if it was a rapper or not. Nas being part of it is good, ’cause it’s someone from the inside who, from a producer’s perspective, makes sure everything is what it’s supposed to be.” The project has been controversial, with Q-Tip speaking out against Rapaport and the actor still moving forward with the doc, called “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Tip said the friction stemmed in part from the group’s lack of control over the story, despite being listed as producers. An e-mail from the production team was inadvertently sent Tip’s way, the rapper told MTV News, detailing plans to silence the group. That was one too many red flags for him. “All of this stuff is going on, and we’re still trying to move forward in good faith, and we see this e-mail, inadvertently, which was a godsend,” he said. “I believe that that was the universe giving that to us and showing us who we were dealing with.” Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal more of our interview with A Tribe Called Quest and their concerns about the “Beats, Rhymes and Life” documentary. Q-Tip Explains His Issues With A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

‘It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours,’ MC says of his concerns. By Jayson Rodriguez Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage Last week, Q-Tip stirred things up online when he tweeted that he was not in support of Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary . The MC and the director remained silent on the matter, refusing interview requests from a number of outlets. On Tuesday, however, Q-Tip appeared on satellite-radio station Shade 45’s morning show and explained his message. The veteran lyricist spoke with fill-in host Elliott Wilson of Rap Radar and said his opinion has nothing to do with his group being the focus of the doc, but with his role as a producer. “I’m a producer on this film; Tribe is a producer on this film,” he said. “When I speak, I’m speaking for the whole group. A lot of people think I’m speaking individually, even though I addressed it as ‘I’m not supporting’ it. In reality, as producers, there’s just different things that need to be done, edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there. We feel like it’s 80 percent here. It’s just not there [all the way].” The Tribe MC said he and his groupmates have a final say over the project, per the agreement they made with Rapaport, an actor and first-time filmmaker. Although Tip wouldn’t specify the exact nature of his discomfort with the project, he said because the project is the first of its kind — “an extensive cinematic documentary about a hip-hop group” — it’s more than just a Tribe issue. “There’s so much riding on this,” he said. “It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours. So we got to make sure sh– is down right.” Will you check out the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest

Kanye West Reveals Jay-Z Joint Album Details

MC tweets Pete Rock, Q-Tip and Madlib have contributed to the project. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Kanye West’s forthcoming joint release with Jay-Z won’t just feature the two hip-hop heavyweights trading bars. The album is shaping up to be collaborative effort that ropes in a slew of rap voices from underground icons to chart-topping kingpins. West took to his Twitter account on Saturday (September 25) to reveal that beatmaster Pete Rock and A Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-Tip have jumped on the project. “We got new Pete Rock Joints on the Watch the Thrown album… Q Tip joints…” West tweeted . He added that the album is also set to include a musical offering from prolific, crate-digging luminary Madlib. “We bout to spit on this Madlib beat.” The Jigga/’Ye album is part of the hip-hop superstar’s newly launched campaign to get fresh music to the fans. After announcing in August that he plans to release a spankin’ new track every Friday until Christmas, West tweeted on the first day of his G.O.O.D. Friday initiative that he’s hooking up with Hov for a five-track album. The Jay-Z/Nicki Minaj/Rick Ross/Bon Iver collabo “Monster” is slated to appear on the record. The Jay-Z joint album details also come a day after Yeezy unleashed another Hov-assisted cut, “So Appalled.” West dished that the newly released G.O.O.D. Friday track, which also features Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, Cyhi the Prynce and RZA, is the weekly joint he’s feeling the most. “Ok So Appalled might be my personal favorite Good Friday song so far… It’s just my favorite style of hip hop done very modern,” West tweeted of the string-laden track, which includes the various MCs hollers of “f—in’ ridiculous ridiculous.” “Just Swizz’s voice over the cello’s is haunting,” adding that he may revisit the track and “do another version where I bring that part in right after Pusha’s verse also.” Who else would you like to see on Kanye West and Jay-Z’s joint album? Snoop Dogg Says Katy Perry Will Appear On His Next Album

The ‘California Gurls’ pair will reunite for the upcoming Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. By Jayson Rodriguez Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images Snoop Dogg is in a “let’s do it again” type of mood. The rapper announced plans to work with Katy Perry again after the pair’s “California Gurls” collaboration shot to the top of the iTunes singles chart this week. ( Perry’s album, Teenage Dream, also hit #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week.) “We’re trying to get together and do something on my new album … so [I’m] definitely in contact with her,” Snoop told OK! magazine about Perry. “She’s a sweet girl and I had fun making the record with her. Like I said, I’m looking forward to her being on my record as well.” The album in question is Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. Snoop announced he’s revisiting his classic debut album in a BubbleTweet video message sent over Swizz Beatz’s Twitter account. Snoop and Swizz were in a studio session and revealed they had recorded upwards of 18 new tracks together. “Man, this is big Snoop Dogg coming to you live from the studio somewhere,” Snoop said in the clip. “With Swizzle, and he just laced my boots up for my new record. He gave me some gangster sh–, some Crip sh–, some R&B sh–, some hip-hop sh–, some hard sh–, some mean sh–.” The Los Angeles lyricist then revealed the name of his next album before the clip cut off. Snoop’s Doggystyle was released in November 1993. The collection was produced by Dr. Dre and, along with Dre’s The Chronic, helped solidify the West Coast’s reign atop the hip-hop game. It still remains one of the best-selling debuts in hip-hop history. Last month, Snoop revisited his debut project as a part of this year’s Rock the Bells tour, which had performers playing seminal albums in their entirety. Also on the bill were Lauryn Hill ( The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ), A Tribe Called Quest ( Midnight Marauders ), KRS-One ( Criminal Minded ), Rakim ( Paid in Full ) and the Wu-Tang Clan ( Enter the Wu-Tang [36 Chambers] ). ‘We knocked down the door,’ Phife Dawg tells MTV News at Rock the Bells stop. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Shaheem Reid Q-Tip and Phife Dawg perform at Rock the Bells Sunday Photo: Getty Images Making The Moment: Midnight Marauders A Tribe Called Quest pulled off the rare feat of dropping back-to-back-to-back classic albums in the early 1990s, with People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Mauraders. But while they were creating those masterpieces, they were fully unaware of the impact the group was having on hip-hop. According to Phife Dawg, ATCQ were just concerned with keeping the momentum going from one project to the next. “Gotta keep it coming,” he told MTV News. ” People’s Instinctive, we knocked down the door. Low End Theory, we knocked it off the hinges. And we just had to skyrocket after that. I don’t think we thought about it that much; we just decided to be ourselves and have fun with it. But I remember us saying to each other, ‘Let’s not make this a conceptual album — let’s just have fun. Rhyme over these beats and do what we do.’ But one important thing that we always had in mind was how the album would be sequenced, and I think that’s what really made the album banging.” While the four-man collective — Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheem Muhammad and Jarobi — didn’t realize yet the place they were carving out in music history, as they reflected on their careers, Tribe, touring this month on the Rock the Bells trek, said they understand the benchmarks they’ve achieved. And in particular, the influence they’ve had on a bevy of MCs, from Lupe Fiasco to J.Cole to Kid Cudi, all whom have burrowed from Tribe’s rythmic sound and everyman raps. Tribe’s DJ and one of the group’s core producers, Ali Shaheed, said he wished there were even more room for acts with that kind of artistic slant. “There are a lot of people who are bringing a lot of technique and style out there,” he said. “Hip-hop is different these days. One thing that’s missing is that there used to be a plethora [of diverse acts]. It only feels like just a handful on the mainstream level that’s impacting, like Drake, Lupe, Kid Cudi. They each have their own fanbase, which says a lot, that people are opening their minds to follow artists like that. But I would like to see a whole lot more. There was dozens of dozens of groups making an impact when we were out there. It’d be nice to see that again on a mainstream level.” Which up-and-coming MCs most remind you of A Tribe Called Quest? Raekwon Remembers ODB Before Rock The Bells Tour Launch

Wu-Tang’s Chef expects crowd to fill in late MC’s verses as they perform 36 Chambers. By Shaheem Reid Wu-Tang Clan Photo: LOUD For fans of the architects of hip-hop, the countdown is almost over, and the annual fest that mixes hot newcomers with rap trailblazers is almost upon us. Guerilla Union’s annual Rock the Bells Tour starts Saturday at L.A.’s NOS Center with a historic lineup that includes Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, the Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One and Rakim. Each of the headliners will perform a classic album from their catalog, and special guest Lauryn Hill will be igniting the stage with a bevy of her hits as well. Wu-Tang has chosen Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) as the LP for their set . The Clan’s Raekwon calls Rock the Bells the “royal rumble of hip-hop.” And while the Chef said he’s excited about revisiting the Clan’s breathtaking debut, he’ll definitely miss the show-stealing presence of late comrade Ol’ Dirty Bastard. “Dirty had given us the energy booster that we need to believe that we are the best,” Rae told MTV News recently in New York. “I still think about him. … I think as I’m getting a little older, I’m getting a little more sensitive in certain places when it comes to my brother being gone. “It’s gonna be fun to get out here and represent and talk about him and see all them fans go crazy because they love Dirty,” he continued. “They love Dirty so much, I know for a fact that when them records come on, they’re gonna go crazy.” Rae expects the crowd to fill in verses for their beloved brother during records such as “Shame on a N—a,” “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ ” and, of course, “Protect Ya Neck.” “That’s a beautiful thing,” Rae said about crowd participation. “When I think about my brother not being here, it still keeps me wanting to keep that Wu-Tang flag as high as it can be. He was the one that really gave us all the spirit.” Will you be checking Wu-Tang out at Rock the Bells? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ol’ Dirty Bastard Raekwon
