Ludacris ‘Inspired’ By Aspiring MCs At ‘Live Large’ Competition

‘It’s all about competition,’ he tells MTV News about Magnum-sponsored freestyle contest whose winner will get to perform with Luda. By Alvin Blanco Ludacris at the “Live Large Project 2” competition on Monday Photo: Dave Kotinsky/ Getty Images Ludacris is a marquee hip-hop artist but he has no problem lending aspiring rappers a hand. On Monday, the Atlanta-based MC/actor was at New York City’s Highline Ballroom for the Magnum-sponsored Live Large Project 2, a hip-hop/freestyle competition that gives contestants a shot at a cash prize and the chance to perform alongside Luda at Springfest 2011 in Miami. It’s the second year Luda has participated in the event, and the Disturbing Tha Peace Records founder said it always makes him remember his days as a hungry unknown. “I remember being an aspiring artist and up-and-coming rapper and wishing I had opportunities like the one that Magnum Live Large Project is giving out — $5,000, a trip to Miami, able to perform — all of these different things is good, man,” Luda told MTV News. “It’s all about competition. That’s what hip-hop is all about anyway.” The Highline stop was just one of four regional events that span the West Coast (Bay Area), South (Miami) and the Midwest (Detroit). The top three contestants from each region, as well as a fifth selected via YouTube, will make the trip to Miami to compete for the $5,000 prize. New York’s top three winners were Perelli, Renegade and Pumpkinhead, who won $1,000 for being the fan favorite. According to Ludacris, anyone who’s achieved his level of success should feel obligated to support events like this one and serve as a source of inspiration. “It’s definitely important for me to give back to MCs coming up,” he said.”That’s part of the reason we do what we do. You can never forget where you come from or how you came up. I’m very excited to be doing this. And don’t get it twisted, I’m getting inspired my damn self by watching the up-and-coming rappers and it’s making me realize and remember back in the day when I was the same way.” A rap industry neophyte that Ludacris thinks highly of and can relate to is Big K.R.I.T . After making strides independently, the Meridian, Mississippi, rapper and producer signed with Luda’s label home, Def Jam, last year and recently released a new mixtape, Return of 4Eva. Luda, along with Bun B, makes an appearance on the remix of “Country Sh–.” “When [Big K.R.I.T.] speaks, you can feel his heart,” Luda told us. “His heart is on the outside of his chest. He’s talking about his experience and being from the South and being from Mississippi. Just respecting the fact that he’s the production side as well as spilling his heart out on the beats, I can respect that.” Ludacris is working on his eighth album, Ludaversal, due out later this year. Death Cab For Cutie To Shoot Single-Take Video Live On The Web

‘You Are a Tourist’ clip will air live at 7 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Matt Elias Death Cab For Cutie Photo: MTV News On Monday afternoon, Death Cab for Cutie were holed up in a Hollywood soundstage rehearsing for an exceptionally ambitious music video project. The band plans to shoot a music video for their single “You Are a Tourist” in one take while being simulcast to the Web. And while single-take videos are nothing new (OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” and Feist’s “1234” come to mind), they’ve had the luxury of shooting multiple takes until they got it right. With “You Are a Tourist,” Death Cab have one chance to do it, and they’re doing it live. Adding to the difficulty, the band has mapped out a complex arrangement of moves and visual effects — but describing the video’s treatment might be the trickiest part of it all. “It’s kind of hard to describe because it’s kind of like … I liken it to a 5-year-old trying to explain their trip to Disneyland,” frontman Ben Gibbard said. “It’s sensory overload, so there’s a lot of things happening, and trying to kind of walk anybody through it would be very difficult. But there are lights and dancers, and smoke and projections, and it’s gonna be kind of a little bit of a Busby Berkeley -type of spectacle.” And a spectacle it is. Joining the band are a bevy of background actors and a troop of a dozen or so dancers, and just about as many computers controlling the action. The entire set glows with a series of projections (an abstract cityscape, geometric designs and triangles that flicker in sync with the music). Oh, and the band’s suits light up in sync with the song too. But despite the entire performance being highly intricate, the foursome seemed pretty relaxed during rehearsal. As Ben pointed out, “I think the trick here, or the balance here, is to try to have there be a legitimate amount of choreography involved, but not so much that if one thing goes wrong, the whole thing topples like a house of cards. And there are some very, kind of, tight moves throughout the video, but nothing that, you know, if I’m not standing here at this one point, the Rube Goldberg kind of thing falls apart and you’re standing there for the next three minutes looking like a moron.” You can catch the video in all its live glory Tuesday (April 5) at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on MTV.com , VH1.com and YouAreATourist.com . Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: The Sexy Date Night!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have a giant, adorable family . But even doting parents of six need a break once in awhile. Especially doting parents of six. Fortunately, they got it, taking a 27-hour escape at the luxe Amangiri resort in Lake Powell, Utah. For Brangelina, it was a very much-needed rendezvous. “Brad said he was enjoying a little mommy and daddy time,” a source says of Pitt, who jetted from New Orleans, where he’s been filming Cogan’s Trade. Sorry, kids. This trip was adults only . Checking in at 2 p.m., they enjoyed a late dinner and flew their private plane over Lake Powell the next morning. Suites at the resort go for $3,300 per night. Why? Because they feature stunning desert views, a full-service spa, yoga and “floatation” pavilions plus a fitness center and beauty salon. Nice downtime. The couple never schedules film projects concurrently, in order to ensure the children are looked after. But you gotta take time to look after yourselves, too. “Brad and Angie have a truly loving, caring, romantic relationship,” a friend said . “They try to make it possible for to be together as much as possible.” “That’s what makes them so successful in love.” [Photo: Fame Pictures]

‘Take Me Home Tonight’ Stars Teach The Kids About The ’80s

Anna Faris thinks of ‘big bangs, shoulder pads and jelly shoes’ when she looks back at the decade. By Kara Warner Anna Faris in “Take Me Home Tonight” Photo: Relativity Media In addition to being an entertaining and raunchy romantic comedy, “Take Me Home Tonight,” which features the acting and comedic talents of Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer and Dan Fogler, is also a cinematic homage to the 1980s. When MTV News caught up with the cast, we asked them to explain to the younger generations what the ’80s were all about — check out the embedded video to really get a feel for their trip down memory lane. “It’s like ‘Glee,’ ” Faris said with a laugh. “Is it like ‘Glee’?” Fogler questioned his co-star. “I don’t know,” she said, second-guessing herself. “How would you describe that decade to them?” Fogler followed up, taking over the interviewer job. “It was a time when the music was so influential and the style, it was so specific to the ’80s,” Faris explained. “You know, the big bangs and the shoulder pads and the jelly shoes.” “It’s in your face!” Fogler interjected. “No one really apologized for what they were wearing or doing.” Faris agreed: “Yeah, women wore a lot of super high-waisted bikinis — which men, I think, still kind of like.” “They do, because you saw more of the pelvis than you normally would,” Fogler explained, adding that the trend should make a comeback. Grace and Palmer took a different track in describing the ’80s. Grace chose to call out several famous music videos from our MTV archives in order to “describe” what was happening during the decade. “Let’s play a couple of [music videos] right now,” Grace instructed, proceeding to name his favorite ’80s artists and their hit songs. “Duran Duran, ‘Girls on Film’ — go! OK, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf,’ go to that video,” he said. “That is the opening-credit scene [for ‘Take Me Home Tonight’]. OK, now we are back. Now, do ‘Video Killed the Radio Star,’ ” he said. “The first video ever played on MTV. This video was going on when I was watching MTV.” “He’s good!” Palmer added, not able to comment properly on the happenings back in the day, since she was born in 1986. What are your favorite ’80s videos or trends? Tell us in the comments! George Clooney Contracts Malaria

‘I guess the mosquito in Juba looked at me and thought I was the bar,’ actor jokes about the disease. By Jocelyn Vena George Clooney in Sudan Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images George Clooney reportedly contracted malaria during a recent trip to Sudan. Piers Morgan first reported the news on his Twitter page, writing, “George Clooney has contracted malaria following a recent trip to Sudan.” He later added: “More Clooney – it’s his 2nd bout of malaria. Taking medication but feeling rough.” Morgan sent out a slew of tweets about Clooney’s condition. He sat down with the star to talk about his trip to the country for an episode of his CNN show, set to air Thursday night (January 20). According to Morgan’s Twitter, Clooney said, “Well you know even with malaria, it’s just been fun. I guess the mosquito in Juba looked at me and thought I was the bar.” The talk-show host relayed part of the conversation he had with Clooney, tweeting, “Me: ‘Has President Bashir detached a detail of sickly, vengeful mosquitoes to target you whenever you arrive?’ George: ‘Yeah, I think so.’ ” Earlier this month, Clooney teamed up with MTV and the Satellite Sentinel Project, as well as Not on Our Watch, the Enough Project, Google, the United Nations UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme, the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and Trellon LLC, to ask young people to help prevent an outbreak of civil war in the country by sending the message that “the world is watching.” “Frankly, our team of policy wonks and super nerds could use an injection of MTV style,” he joked in signature Clooney style about the project. Haiti Earthquake Recovery Is Slow, Says Medical Volunteer

One year after the disaster med student Alison Smith says Haitians are frustrated. By Gil Kaufman Haitians wait to be given food by the United States Army in Port-au-Prince in 2010 Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images It’s hard to believe that it’s been one year since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, leveling much of the impoverished island nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and killing more than 250,000. The world came together in the weeks after the natural disaster, when Americans donated nearly $1.5 billion to help Haiti recover from the 7.0 magnitude quake. Another $5.3 billion was pledged at a donors conference two months after the earthquake. Every penny was needed, as nearly 2 million people were left homeless, many of them forced into ramshackle tent cities, and nearly 400,000 children were made orphans by the latest natural disaster to strike the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The 12 ensuing months have not been any easier, with the combined force of hurricane season, a bitterly divisive election and a mysterious cholera outbreak that has taken the lives of more than 3,600 and infected more than 170,000. Medical student Alison Smith has been to Haiti four times on medical relief missions since last January, and she told MTV News that, unfortunately, the situation on the ground remains quite dire, and the world must not forget the work that still needs to be done. “Every time I go, it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of progress,” said Smith, who just returned from her most recent trip last week. “You try to be optimistic about it, and you see certain areas of Port-au-Prince where they’ve really tried to clear the rubble … [but] you don’t see many aid groups anymore.” While she saw a rush of assistance from aid groups from all over the world a year ago, Smith said many have dialed back their work since then, while some of the Haitian people have developed a resistant attitude about foreign help. The picture she painted was very different from the one MTV News got from relief workers for two organizations, World Food Programme and Partners in Health, who said the aid they received as a result of MTV’s record-setting “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon has made a tremendous difference to the lives of sick and struggling Haitians. They agreed that much work still needs to be done, but said great strides have been made to feed and tend to the sick in the large tent camps. But Smith said from what she’s seen, many Haitians have become suspicious of foreigners and dispirited about their squalid living conditions. “People in Haiti are disheartened because they’re still living in really bad conditions, really not much improved since last January,” she said. “They’re really concerned about how the world is still viewing them, if people really are still caring about it, because that initial outburst of support has really gone away.” Things were not helped by November’s cholera outbreak, which some Haitians believed was brought to the country by relief workers from the United Nations. “When you fly into the country, now all you see is tents,” she said. “All the public areas people gravitated to are still inhabited by people.” If anything, she feels like there are more tents than there were when she first started visiting after the earthquake in January, as very little debris has been removed and living conditions remain poor as a result of no sanitation in the camps, some of which house more than 100,000 citizens. The vast tent cities outside of the capital have blossomed into makeshift refugee camps that lack any food and water sources and are completely dependent on foreign aid. A promising recent sign, however, were some Western-style houses being built near the airport by the Red Cross. But, so far, Smith said, they are an anomaly in an otherwise still bleak countryside. Smith, who lives in New Orleans, said the lesson she learned from that city after Hurricane Katrina is that recovery takes a long time. One good sign she’s seen is that some schools in Haiti have been rebuilt and are back up and running. “It will be hard on the future of the country if you’re not able to educate your children,” she said, noting that the destruction of the country’s main medical school will also hamper the ability to educate a new generation of indigenous doctors. “Haiti’s always struggled with civil war, with disaster, it’s always been at that point. Everybody’s been asking themselves, ‘What’s next for Haiti? How do you solve the situation?’ ” she said. For now, Smith, 26, a medical student at Tulane University, still holds out hope that things can change in Haiti. And she, for one, is not giving up. She’s planning another trip to the country within the month and continued visits for as long as her services are needed. Pure Comedy: Clay-Mation Jermaine Is Stuck In Africa Behind His Deadbeat Dad Steez

We really don’t understand how this man’s life can be about so little right now. According to TMZ , this fool went to Africa, knowing his passport was about to expire, and knowing how governmental agencies feel about renewing paperwork for deadbeats… Jermaine Jackson cannot come back to the United States of America … because he owes a fortune in back child support … TMZ has learned. Jermaine is currently in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Africa. We’ve learned his passport has expired and he can’t get a new one, so he’s waylaid there. Here’s what we know. In May 2008, Jermaine’s baby mama Alejandra got a child support order, requiring him to pay $3,000 a month. Jermaine went into arrears almost immediately and, as of last month, he owed $91,921. Under California law, when someone owes more than $2,500 a month in child support, the State Department of Child Support Services automatically informs the feds of the delinquency, and the feds then flag the person’s passport. Once the passport expires, it will not be renewed until the person becomes current on child support obligations. Our sources say Jermaine’s passport expired during his trip, he can’t get a new one and he’s stuck overseas. If Jermaine doesn’t clear up the debt, it’s unclear if the American Embassy will come to the rescue … though we’re told in these situations the Embassy will often issue temporary papers so the person can return to the U.S. ROTFLMAO while SMH.
