Relinquishment Can Be Fun! Redefining the Pursuit of Happiness to Create a Greener World

Eating like this every day wouldn’t be very good for the environment — and it wouldn’t be much of a treat either. Photo by Jennifer Hattam. Before I moved to Istanbul, I always thought of eating seasonally as a great idea in theory, but kind of a chore in practice. How were you supposed to remember if it was OK to eat asparagus in October or oranges in April? What if you really, really wanted to cook

Getting Developing Nations on a Greener Path Without Creating a New Renewable Energy ‘Colonialism’

Family and friends pose in front of a house in South Africa with a new solar heating system. Photo by Abri_Beluga via Flickr No matter how much it might help the environment for fewer nations to produce and consume at U.S.-style levels, slowing global development would clearly be an unworkable — and profoundly unfair — way to address the climate crisis. As environmental scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker put it this morning at a conference in Berlin: “Poor and cle… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Turkey Willing To Act As Iran Intermediary

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu agrees that diplomacy is the best way to fix the problem over Iran’s atomic program. Turkey is willing and ready to mediate Tehran and world powers. Together with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki, Davutoglu addressed a joint media conference. According to Mottaki, Iran is ready for the deal and also plans to hold talks with all 15 members of the UN Security Council that includes Turkey in order to break the deadlock over the deal. Ankara believed that the solution for Iran’s nuclear program is through negotiations and diplomatic process. Greek Sues a Turkish Yoghurt in Sweden

A Greek man is charging 50 million kronor (£4.5m; $6.9m) to a dairy in Sweden for using his picture on containers of Turkish-style yoghurt. The man only discovered his face being featured on pots of Turkish Yoghurt made by Lindahls after Athanasios Varzanakos, his friend who lives in Stockholm, told him about it. He said that his friend was annoyed and asked how it was possible. The dairy claims that it bought the picture in good faith from an image library. Chief executive Ander Lindahl was surprised when the Greek man appealed a 40-page legal complaint declaring that the company had used a misleading image because he had no association with Turkey. Lindahl told the AFP news agency that the company bought the image from a photo agency and they assumed that everything was in order. Despite of the legal action, the image still remains on the Lindahl website. There has been tension between the relationship of Turkey and Greece, and there were some cases which didn’t turn out well. Earthquake in Turkey Kills 51

A strong, pre-dawn earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6 struck eastern Turkey on Monday, killing 51 people as it knocked down stone and mud-brick houses and minarets in at least six villages, the government said. The earthquake surprised many people as they slept, crumpling buildings into piles of rubble. Panicked survivors fled into the narrow village streets, some climbing out of windows, as more than 50 aftershocks measuring up to 5.5 and 5.3 magnitude rattled the region. The Kandilli seismology center said the quake hit at 4:32 a.m. (0232 GMT, 9 p.m. EST Sunday) near the village of Basyurt in Elazig province, about 340 miles (550 kilometers) east of Ankara, the capital. added by: lifestudentno83
