Tonight in NYC: Jason Statham and Movieline at the Apple Store!

Sure it’s cold and snowy and otherwise appalling outside in New York right now, but sometimes you’ve just got to suck it up, get out of the house or office and catch a live Jason Statham interview at the Apple Store SoHo . I’ll be there moderating, so please prepare your trenchant questions about his new film The Mechanic (among other topics) accordingly. The party starts at 6 p.m.; as always, it’s free to get in, but seats are first-come, first-served. We look forward to seeing you!

Greta Gerwig on Girl Crushes, Movie Sex, and Going Mainstream

Last year’s Greenberg may have marked Greta Gerwig’s entrance into mainstream cinema — when you come from the world of making nano-budgeted improvised films with your friends, a Noah Baumbach project is a big film – but 2011 will be the year the indie darling truly goes Hollywood. In this week’s friends-with-benefits comedy No Strings Attached , Gerwig stands out as Natalie Portman’s level-headed BFF ; in April, she’ll play the object of Russell Brand’s affections in Arthur . And next month, she’ll vie for her first major acting award at the Spirit Awards, nominated (opposite No Strings Attached co-star Portman) for her work as a winsome Los Angeleno in Greenberg .

How Does the Scream 4 Trailer Stack Up to Its Predecessors on the Hip-O-Meter?

I’m kind of in awe of the marketing team behind Scream 4 . Years after Scream 3 opened to little fanfare and vanished into the Wal-Mart dollar bin, here they are trying to position Scream 4 as one of the must-see franchise movies of the year. And they’re doing a decent job! Let’s hear it for hype and the fickle pop-cultural collective consciousness! In any case, now that we’ve got an official, HD version of the trailer that leaked last weekend (and quickly disappeared ), let’s journey down trailer-memory lane to chart how the rules of the series (and its marketing) changed, how it lost its audience and how well the latest trailer does at rectifying that failure. I’ll be awarding each trailer a score between 1 (Lame!) to 5 (Hip!) on the Hip-O-Meter (patent pending).

How Does the Scream 4 Trailer Stack Up to Its Predecessors on the Hip-O-Meter?

The 2011 Sundance Film Festival kicks off today, and this prestigious annual event has yielded dozens of essential indies over the years, from sex, lies and videotape to Poison to The Kids Are All Right . But let’s not forget that the last few decades have included countless twee, precious, and generally irritating indies for every great one. Which brings us to Paper Man (out on DVD this week from MPI Home Video).

I applaud him for playing along and testing his mettle, but there’s no doubt that Ignatiy Vishnevetsky — the new 24-year-old co-host on Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies — crashed and burned while taking The Daily Beast ‘s 10-question movie quiz . He compensated with a slick harangue to Aaron Sorkin midway through question eight, but still, he biffed. Would you have fared better?

Perfect Sense Trailer: Ewan McGregor and Eva Green Have a Cry-Off

Ricky Gervais To Drop By The Office

After seven seasons worth of speculation, The Office creator Ricky Gervais will reprise his role as David Brent, the clueless former manager of the U.K. series, on the U.S. adaptation next week. The showdown will take place on the January 27 episode, “The Seminar” and be very brief. Office show-runner Paul Lieberstein warns Vulture , that “if you don’t set your TiVo right, you’ll miss it.” Which means that maybe the encounter takes place in the episode tag? Either way, look out for Gervais’ first attempt to regain some of the statewide popularity he squandered last Sunday. [ TVline ]
