Michelle Orange’s Top 10 Films of 2010

Asking what films I’ve seen recently is a good way to wipe my brain clean. Once, in a job interview where it was clear the answer would determine my fate, all I could come up with was Calendar Girls , which would have been a poor choice even as a recent release, which it was not. Tabulation is not a strong suit. Rubrics wear me out. A recent report on people with brains like databases with total recall made me itch, and yet the chemistry made sense: An abundance of adrenaline caused ordinary events to imprint in their memories the way only extraordinary events — or even amazing shots, bravura scenes, and other bits of movie magic — do for the rest of us.

REVIEW: Sofia Coppola Brings a Delicate Touch, and Sure-Handed Precision, to Somewhere

Some of those who have already written about Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere have categorized it, in a kind of lazy shorthand, as a movie about the “emptiness of celebrity.” But Somewhere is really a Western — a Western without cactuses or rocks or horses, but one that, even so, takes place under a special kind of sunlight found only in L.A., in an environment that’s wild and ruthless under its veneer of civilization. The character of the land means everything in Somewhere : Wide boulevards lined with palm trees make for an illusory endless frontier; giant billboards advertise nothing in particular — they’re big because they can be. This is a place where you can lose your way without even taking a wrong turn, and sure enough, the hero of this particular story is a man who has temporarily lost himself. Still, the city’s beauty — either sitting in plain sight under the sizzling noon sun or semi-hidden in the dusk — is peculiar and specific and alluring. L.A. — and the idea of Hollywood, if not the actual neighborhood — is heartless and fabulous. It’s a place to really be a man — or not.

CBS Reveals Midseason Plan: What’s New? What’s Moved?

CBS on Tuesday announced its midseason game plan, and given the network’s embarrassment of riches, none of the changes merits any cause for alarm. Kicking things off — as a sort of placeholder/possible test drive — Tom Selleck’s Blue Bloods , which has been handily winning Friday nights, will move to Wednesdays at 10/9c for four weeks starting Jan. 19.

Jersey Shore Season Three Preview: Fine, Maybe I Like This Deena Character

Jersey Shore ‘s second go-around proved why The Real World never brought back casts for multiple seasons: People become aware of how they’re perceived, they play to those perceptions, and their madcap innocence becomes a controlled calculation. But just wait: The addition of new cast member Deena , who at first seemed like a redundant hellcat, might add a fresh soupcon of stank that the show could use. Preview after the jump.

Betty White Better Than The Social Network, Says AP

It figures that if some celebrity was going to prevent either Mark Zuckerberg or The Social Network from winning an award this month, it would have to be Betty White. As such, say hello to the AP Entertainer of the Year. “It’s ridiculous,” said White, accurately. “They haven’t caught on to me, and I hope they never do.” If only Aaron Sorkin included the Facebook campaign to get Betty White on SNL in the epilogue of his screenplay!
